- Chapter 13 - Encountering Ghosts
The five of them arrived in the human realm and began discussing their strategy. Should they enter Luofu Village immediately to investigate, or should they find a place to stay first and plan their next move?
Li Sichen leaned toward the latter. He believed that caution was the only correct approach when facing the unknown. Rushing in blindly might lead to an untimely death.
Pei Ziqing shared his view and agreed to deliberate further. After weighing their options, the other three eventually settled on the plan to find temporary lodging and coordinate from there.
The nearest town to Luofu Village was called Basi Town. People from surrounding villages used to come here to purchase daily necessities or sell homemade goods to support their families. However, due to the hauntings in Luofu Village, many young people had moved away. The town was no longer as lively as it once was. The streets were sparsely populated, and one could occasionally see elderly vendors with expressionless faces. Their weathered countenances made them look more like the dead than the living. The roads and surrounding buildings were in disrepair, appearing dilapidated and broken.
A cold wind blew against Li Sichen, tossing his robes. As he scanned his surroundings, he felt a genuine, inexplicable chill deep in his heart, as if he were standing in the middle of a frozen wasteland.
Pei Ziqing looked uneasy, his face clouded with worry. “This place is truly eerie. Li Sichen, what do you think?”
Li Sichen frowned, his mind in a state of confusion. After a moment of silence, he replied, “Let us keep looking. I am afraid it will be difficult to even find a place to stay in a town like this.”
Will I fail here? Li Sichen thought anxiously.
The world he once lived in was entirely different from this one. Whether it was daily habits or the laws of survival, he found it difficult to adapt as someone from another era. Now, facing such a dangerous unknown, he did not know what awaited him. But he truly did not want to stumble here. He had promised to protect that person, to help him neutralize the poison, hide his identity, and create a brand new ending free of pain. If he failed now, he would be utterly useless.
“System, can your functions detect a safe area for us to stay?”
[Please wait, scanning in progress.]
[Ding! Scanning complete. The safe area has been marked for the host to review!]
In his mind, the little blue sphere presented a printed map. Seeing the dense markings, Li Sichen finally felt a bit more grounded. “I suppose you are useful for something after all.”
[Everything for the KPL!]
Li Sichen rolled his eyes. Looking at the red dots on the map, he noticed the locations were mostly in very remote areas. He doubted the accuracy of the map; in his experience, remote places were usually where trouble was most likely to happen.
“The red markings are the places where we can stay?” Li Sichen double checked with the system just in case.
The little blue sphere nodded vigorously. “Correct! The detection shows low levels of dangerous substances. The host can consider them!”
“I see.” Li Sichen decided to trust the system’s judgment.
He reunited with the others and shared his decision, but no one except Pei Ziqing was willing to believe him. It was only natural to look for an inn or a tavern that looked secure rather than a cramped, remote location that seemed unreliable.
Ultimately, the five agreed to split up. The other three went to find the nearest inn and gather information about the town, while Pei Ziqing and Li Sichen headed further out to find a place to stay.
Following the red dots, the two soon found an old, long abandoned mansion. The plaque above the door hung precariously tilted, withered leaves swirled in the air, and thick layers of dust and spiderwebs covered everything. There were also countless dark red stains on the walls.
Pei Ziqing instinctively took a step back and swallowed hard. It took him a long time to manage a sentence. “Are you sure we are staying here tonight?”
Li Sichen remained silent. He was not entirely sure himself, but the system’s detection should not be wrong.
“Are you afraid?” Li Sichen asked.
Pei Ziqing answered without a second of hesitation. “Of course I am! I am telling you, I only came to this place because I trust you. Do not get me killed! If I die because of you, I will haunt you as a ghost!”
“Coward,” Li Sichen muttered calmly. He walked boldly into the mansion, his hand gripping the spiritual sword, Yanpo. It was the gift from that person that gave him the courage to face the dark.
Seeing Li Sichen enter, Pei Ziqing hurried to follow. “Do not walk so fast! Wait for me!”
That night.
The room the two were staying in had been tidied up enough to be habitable. Exhausted, Pei Ziqing fell asleep immediately, forgetting his fears. Li Sichen intended to sleep as well to preserve his strength for the challenges of the next day.
Unexpectedly, a faint song reached his ears. The sound was intermittent, shifting between the sound of a woman crying and the whistling of the wind through the trees. It was impossible to pinpoint. Hearing such a sound in the middle of the night in a place like this was truly terrifying.
Soon, a strange fragrance filled the room. It was somewhat pungent. As soon as Li Sichen caught a whiff of it, his body went limp. His legs gave out and he fell to his knees, his sword, Yanpo, clattering heavily to the floor. His consciousness began to fade, and he struggled just to stay awake.
Through a hazy blur, Li Sichen saw a cloud of black mist appear and fly straight toward Pei Ziqing. In the next second, Pei Ziqing was snatched away by the mist and vanished without a trace.
Li Sichen tried to draw his sword and give chase, but the effect of the incense was too strong. He took less than two steps before he collapsed completely, falling unconscious on the floor.
When Li Sichen woke up again, he was in a completely unfamiliar place.
Everything he saw was a vibrant red. Festive red silk hung throughout the hall. On the high seat sat a woman in red; her makeup was glamorous yet carried a hint of malice. She sat cross legged with the arrogance of a master, looking down at a man and woman in wedding attire performing the ritual bows in the center of the room. Her eyes were filled with unconcealed greed.
Li Sichen quickly noticed something bizarre. Although the couple was performing the ceremony, their movements were far too stiff. They were like robots draped in human skin, mechanically executing their master’s orders.
“Enter the bridal chamber!”
As the words fell, the bride’s red veil was lifted. The moment Li Sichen saw the face of the bride, his heart stopped.
“Master?!”
