- Chapter 14 - Torment, To the Point of Being Pure
My god!
Having retreated into the bathroom, Jiang Tan gripped the shorts in her hand and let out a silent scream. She had almost stripped right in front of Jiang Yue!
If she hadn’t suddenly remembered that Jiang Yue was still eating nearby, she really would have reflexively shed her pants and flopped directly onto the sofa.
In truth, Jiang Tan hadn’t originally been particularly bothered by such things. After all, even if she took off her pants, it wasn’t as if she weren’t wearing underwear underneath—there was nothing shameful to see, especially since the other person in the room was also a woman. However, this world was fundamentally different from her previous one; even between girls, there was a certain boundary to maintain.
If she had really stripped just now, she would likely have been seen as a pervert in Jiang Yue’s eyes.
Especially since she was currently in her heat and happened to be an Alpha—the “buffs” were practically maxed out.
Jiang Tan felt so awkward her toes were curling into the floor. She quickly changed her pants, and when she emerged, she put on an air of nonchalance as she lay down in the makeshift bed on the sofa. She pulled the blanket over her stomach and closed her eyes to shut out all elements of embarrassment.
Jiang Yue, still eating, glanced over at her, feeling a bit like laughing.
Although Jiang Yue didn’t have much of her memory, she instinctively felt that other Alphas probably weren’t as easily embarrassed as Jiang Tan.
She was almost to the point of being “pure.”
Thinking this, Jiang Yue felt a slight tightening in her chest. She raised her hand to lightly touch her heart, appearing somewhat bewildered by all the reactions produced during her heat.
After finishing her meal, Jiang Yue tidied up the trash. Feeling no sleepiness, she sat in the living room staring blankly at Jiang Tan, who had long since fallen into a deep sleep, her breathing becoming extremely shallow and steady.
Jiang Tan’s features leaned toward being bright and heroic. When awake, she appeared radiant and refreshing, but Jiang Yue hadn’t expected that while asleep—especially when she occasionally knitted her brows slightly—she would possess a sense of “little grievance” that was actually quite cute.
Jiang Yue gradually became lost in thought as she watched her. She couldn’t help but wonder why Jiang Tan, who was clearly so poor, was willing to spend so much money every month on suppressants rather than finding a suitable Omega to live with.
Otherwise, given Jiang Tan’s circumstances, she shouldn’t have to live such a destitute life.
As Jiang Yue mused on this, she felt the “emotional tide” within her body showing signs of a comeback. She quickly snapped back to reality, and smelling the scent of licorice in the air, she didn’t dare stay any longer. She hurried back to her room and closed the door, curling up in her blankets, intending to endure this wave of the heat through sheer willpower.
Suppressants were too expensive. She didn’t want to put more pressure on Jiang Tan; she wanted to save as many doses as she could.
Time crawled toward two o’clock. The alarm on Jiang Tan’s phone went off. She reached out to silence it, stretched her arms wide, and let out a small yawn.
Her body felt that complicated sensation of having slept comfortably yet not comfortably at all.
Ultimately, it was because sleeping on a solid wood sofa was truly unpleasant.
Jiang Tan rolled out of bed and noticed that Jiang Yue was no longer in the living room. The bedroom door was tightly shut, and sensing the scent of night-blooming cereus in the living room—which was significantly stronger than before her nap—she already had a vague suspicion.
Sigh, there was nothing for it. During these special periods, those “heat waves” came in surges; they were incredibly annoying.
Jiang Tan changed back into the clothes she had worn for work that morning. She checked the kitchen and saw that Jiang Yue had already washed the morning’s dishes. She blinked, feeling a bit surprised.
She actually hadn’t broken any.
One must know that when Jiang Tan first started doing these chores, she had broken several pieces. For a while, she had simply bought stainless steel bowls so that even if they fell, they wouldn’t break—at most, they’d get a few unsightly dents.
Seeing that it was about time, Jiang Tan cast a final worried glance at the bedroom door and headed out with the trash.
The first thing she did upon arriving at the construction site was to tell the canteen manager that she wanted to cancel her meal plan. After refunding the remaining portion of the monthly meal fee she had paid upfront, she got back over three hundred yuan.
It was lucky that Jiang Tan got along well with these people; otherwise, there was no way they would refund money already handed over. Usually, they would have made her finish out the month’s meals.
Work at the site was truly exhausting, especially carrying those steel bars and then tying them down. It was fortunate that an Alpha’s physical stamina was excellent; otherwise, with Jiang Tan’s body from her previous life, she would have been dog-tired every day, let alone being able to deliver food on the side.
Now, there was the added task of buying groceries and cooking for herself after work.
At the wet market, Jiang Tan was picking out ingredients for dinner. When the stall owner tried to quote her a higher price because she looked young, she stared at the owner silently.
When she didn’t speak, the owner looked at her strangely. “Do you want it or not?”
Jiang Tan raised her hand to tug at her even dirtier work jacket. “Do I look like one of those young kids who has no concept of money?”
In truth, Jiang Tan quite disliked grocery shopping at the market. It was just that she had no choice; often the vegetables at the market were fresher than those in the supermarket, and while the supermarket had clearly marked prices, they were also a bit more expensive…
The stall owner looked at Jiang Tan’s appearance: “…”
“Alright, alright, I’ll give it to you for three yuan. No need to say so much.” After all, the owner was a shrewd person who dealt with many people daily; even after being called out by Jiang Tan, she didn’t show any embarrassment. She even grabbed a bag and handed it to Jiang Tan for her to make her selection.
Jiang Tan gave a soft “humph” in her mind before taking the bag and picking out the greens she wanted to cook tonight.
After buying vegetables and meat, she ran into Wang Xiuya, who was also returning from grocery shopping. Wang Xiuya looked at the items Jiang Tan was carrying with slight surprise.
“Little Jiang, are you going to cook for yourself now?”
In all the time they had known each other, she had hardly ever seen Jiang Tan buy groceries to cook at home.
“Yeah, I’m going to give it a try. Cooking for yourself is a bit healthier,” Jiang Tan said, though the last sentence was mostly just to comfort herself.
Wang Xiuya couldn’t help but smile. “Before, when I asked you to come over to my place to eat, you wouldn’t. If there’s anything you don’t know how to cook, feel free to come over and ask.”
Jiang Tan grinned. “Alright, I’ll look for you if I get stuck.”
The two of them carried their things up to the seventh floor. Perhaps hearing the commotion from the stairwell, the door to Jiang Tan’s rental apartment opened first. Jiang Yue stood at the door, as if waiting to welcome Jiang Tan back.
Jiang Tan froze for a moment, and Wang Xiuya—who was two or three steps ahead of Jiang Tan—also froze.
Jiang Tan’s reaction was because she hadn’t expected Jiang Yue to open the door for her, while Wang Xiuya’s was because she smelled the intense, chilly scent of night-blooming cereus coming from Jiang Yue.
Clearly, the girl was currently in the midst of her heat.
The smile that was usually pinned to Wang Xiuya’s face faltered slightly. She gave a slight nod to the Omega who was staring straight at Jiang Tan behind her and said, “Little Jiang, I’ll be heading in now.”
“Oh, okay. See you later, Sister Xiuya,” Jiang Tan said, snapping back to her senses.
Once Wang Xiuya had opened her own door and gone inside, Jiang Tan looked at Jiang Yue. Seeing her still standing there quietly watching her, Jiang Tan hurried up the remaining few steps. “Why did you suddenly come out? It’s not safe for you right now.”
Although most of the residents in this building were elderly people and mostly Betas, there was no guarantee that one of their children wasn’t visiting—and that one of them didn’t happen to be an Alpha.
Mainly, Jiang Tan felt that Jiang Yue’s pheromone concentration was very high. An Alpha with poor self-control could easily be led by her pheromones into losing their mind and entering a dangerous rut.
Jiang Yue’s gaze landed on Jiang Tan’s face. She nodded slowly and took two steps back, but she didn’t immediately go into the living room, as if she were still waiting for Jiang Tan to enter.
Jiang Tan was a bit puzzled by her behavior, but she hurried inside nonetheless and pulled the main door shut.
However, in the next second…
Feeling a fragrant, soft female body lunge into her arms, Jiang Tan was stunned.
