- Chapter 13 - Eating: Is Jiang Tan Shy?
Jiang Tan’s heart was in a state of utter upheaval, like crashing waves and stormy seas; she stared blankly at Jiang Yue.
Even though, strictly speaking, the two of them had only known each other for three days, she truly did not want to have to start getting to know her all over again from the beginning!
She saw Jiang Yue, who was lying on the bed, rub her brow with a tired expression and say, “I’m sorry, I just had a sudden moment of stupidity.”
The moment she had first woken up, Jiang Yue only felt that her mind was terrifyingly blank, which was why she had blurted out those words the instant she saw Jiang Tan.
Hearing her say this, Jiang Tan felt slightly more at ease, though she still asked for confirmation: “You remember now?”
“Yes, I’m sorry,” Jiang Yue apologized again.
“There’s no need for apologies, as long as you didn’t really forget again,” Jiang Tan’s tone was both relieved and complicated. She continued, “I’ll go make something for you now. Will you get up and eat in a bit?”
“Okay,” Jiang Yue replied. She could feel that her body was extremely fatigued; she guessed this was the aftereffect of the inhibitor injection.
“Alright, then get yourself up to wash and rinse. I’m going to make breakfast.” Jiang Tan stood up. Considering that Jiang Yue’s body currently needed nutritional replenishment, she had bought some beef and shrimp earlier when she was shopping, thinking she would blanch them and add them to some noodles for her to eat.
While making breakfast, Jiang Tan couldn’t help but let out a long sigh. She was the one who had picked this person up, so she just had to accept whatever consequences came with it.
But…
She was really so poor.
Jiang Tan wept in her heart. Finally, she placed a large bowl of breakfast that looked fairly sumptuous onto the table, and Jiang Yue emerged just in time after finishing her washing.
Jiang Yue looked at the large bowl of noodles and blinked slightly. Did Jiang Tan think she was such a big eater?
“Have you eaten?” Jiang Yue asked.
“I’ve already eaten. When you’re finished, just leave it here; I’ll clean it up when I get back at noon.” As Jiang Tan spoke, she packed the things she needed to take for her work shift.
Jiang Yue watched her busy figure. The two of them were originally strangers, yet Jiang Tan was able to go to such lengths for her; it was already more than enough.
“Okay, drive carefully on the road,” Jiang Yue said softly.
Originally, she had thought yesterday that she would go out with Jiang Tan today. After Jiang Tan arrived at the construction site, she would have taken the vehicle and slowly accepted and delivered orders. But now, the plan had been abruptly interrupted.
A typical heat cycle lasted three days, so during these three days, she certainly could not go out as she pleased, which meant she couldn’t help Jiang Tan.
Jiang Tan paused for a moment, then turned back to flash her a brilliant smile. “Mhm. I also bought some nutritional supplements and left them on the table. There’s fruit in the kitchen too; eat if you get hungry.”
“Alright,” Jiang Yue replied, her heart sinking slightly.
She was already very clear about Jiang Tan’s economic situation. Now that she had bought another pile of things, where did that money come from?
Jiang Tan headed out, jogging “deng-deng-deng” down the stairs. she hopped on her delivery scooter and drove toward the construction site.
Fortunately, it seemed there would be no shortage of work at the construction site for the next few years. She heard that a certain enterprise from the Capital had taken an interest in Southern City’s location and was going to invest in construction here. A massive amount of engineering projects had started, and this wave alone had provided a living for many people. There was no telling how many more it would support once development was in full swing.
Jiang Tan muttered to herself. Supposedly, they were building something related to Artificial Intelligence. It was a pity she didn’t have the knowledge or technology in that field; otherwise, given this momentum of development, such talents would surely become highly sought after.
Furthermore, in the early stages of construction, they would definitely offer very attractive benefits to draw in talent.
As someone who hadn’t even finished university, Jiang Tan always felt a twinge of heartache whenever she faced those high-tech, high-benefit positions.
It was that sense of melancholy that came from knowing those things would be out of her reach for a lifetime.
Jiang Tan arrived at the site to work, feeling a bit worried. After all, she had just taken out an online loan, and the site had already advanced her salary for several days. The only income she would have coming in soon was the delivery payout on the 20th, but after repaying the online loan, not much of that would be left.
Jiang Tan, who originally thought that an extra person would just mean an extra mouth to feed, was exceptionally distressed. She hadn’t expected that an extra person would actually cost this much money—especially an Omega.
If it were a Beta, at least the cost of inhibitors would have been saved.
At lunch, Sister Liu from the canteen said with some difficulty, “Little Jiang, Engineer Wu said that from now on, everyone has to finish eating in the canteen. Take only what you can eat; you can’t take food out anymore.”
Jiang Tan: “?”
Sister Liu gestured toward a certain direction.
Jiang Tan looked over and saw a man wearing a red safety helmet standing there with his hands behind his back, looking in their direction.
Jiang Tan: “…”
Seriously, does he have a problem? Is he that bored? He even has to manage the workers’ eating habits?
“So, Little Jiang, what do you want to eat? There are people lining up behind you,” Sister Liu said in a low voice.
Jiang Tan: “…”
She took a tray, and after getting her rice and dishes, she went to the side to eat quickly. She felt a surge of annoyance because this would inevitably delay her return time; she would definitely be home later than usual after eating here.
Moreover, if she couldn’t pack meals from the construction site to bring back, then Jiang Yue’s meals would have to be handled another way.
Jiang Tan felt an inexplicable sensation that the world was targeting her.
After finishing her meal gloomily, Jiang Tan bought another portion of food for Jiang Yue on her way back. When she opened the door and went upstairs, the person who was supposed to still be in her heat was sitting in the living room, looking up as she returned.
“Why are you so late today?” Jiang Yue’s voice was a bit soft.
Perhaps because of the heat, she was naturally restless and uneasy during this phase. When Jiang Tan hadn’t returned at the usual time, she felt a tension and panic that almost made it hard to breathe.
Her brain couldn’t stop thinking wildly; all sorts of thoughts about Jiang Tan abandoning her refused to go away no matter what.
“I ate lunch at the site, so I got back a bit late.” Speaking of this, Jiang Tan was a bit depressed. She placed the packed food on the table and couldn’t help but complain to Jiang Yue, “Don’t you think that guy is bored out of his mind? Instead of managing construction safety, he’s managing whether or not workers eat in the canteen!”
Listening to Jiang Tan’s complaining voice, Jiang Yue didn’t know why, but the moment Jiang Tan appeared, the agitation she had felt all morning suddenly calmed down a lot. She took the chopsticks Jiang Tan handed over and listened quietly, occasionally chiming in to agree.
“Then he is indeed being excessive,” Jiang Yue echoed.
Seeing Jiang Yue standing completely on her side, Jiang Tan was somewhat moved. After letting go of that grudge, she couldn’t help but say, “Sigh, maybe he saw me packing meals back the past two days and thought I was taking too much.”
Strictly speaking, she was slightly in the wrong; she had indeed been “plucking wool” (taking advantage of the system).
Jiang Yue pursed her lips. Jiang Tan was bringing food for her after all; perhaps that really was the reason the rule was established.
“I won’t be able to bring you food from the site anymore.” Jiang Tan sat opposite Jiang Yue, resting her elbows on the table and propping up her face with her hands, looking distressed. But buying meals outside was a bit expensive.
“It’s okay, I…”
Just as Jiang Yue was about to say something, Jiang Tan suddenly interrupted her. “Let’s cook for ourselves at home!”
The distress on Jiang Tan’s face vanished, replaced by a look of determination. “I won’t sign up for the canteen meals at the site either. Since a meal is 15 anyway, if I don’t sign up, I’ll save those 30. If we add a little more and buy groceries to cook ourselves, it should be more economical than eating like this.”
Aside from it being a bit more troublesome, Jiang Tan felt that for the same amount of money, they could eat better!
Jiang Yue paused upon hearing her words, then nodded. “That works too.”
She was already thinking in her heart that she could learn how to cook; that way, Jiang Tan could eat directly as soon as she returned.
Having settled the eating situation, Jiang Tan immediately felt relaxed. She said to Jiang Yue, “Just leave the trash there after you finish eating. I’m going to take a nap first.”
Because she had been worrying about Jiang Yue last night, she hadn’t slept well and was indeed feeling terribly sleepy now.
Jiang Yue was startled. “Okay.”
She watched Jiang Tan take off her jacket, which was already a bit dirty. Jiang Tan had originally intended to take off her trousers right then and there, but then, as if remembering something, she glanced at Jiang Yue, turned back into the room to grab a pair of shorts, and went into the bathroom to change.
Jiang Yue blinked slightly.
Was Jiang Tan a bit shy just now?
