- Chapter 1 - The Rescue; "Can't You Restrain Yourself a Little?"
Midnight. Most residential areas had already turned off their lights and fallen silent. However, the nightlife belonging to certain corners of the city had only just begun, clamorous and bustling.
Jiang Tan rubbed her aching neck and shoulders. She had just finished delivering the last takeout order of the day to a customer at a bar, and now her only thought was to hurry back, shower, and lie in bed to sleep.
Looking at the neon lights and wine-filled world—which wasn’t much different from her previous life—Jiang Tan let out a long sigh and twisted the handle of her rented electric delivery scooter, attempting to take a shortcut back.
After the redevelopment of this area, many self-built houses had been erected. Although there was a plan, the excessive uniformity made the layout feel like a labyrinth to someone unfamiliar with it.
In truth, she wasn’t originally from this world. She didn’t know how she had mysteriously “transmigrated” here, becoming a person with the same name and surname as herself, and even an identical appearance.
The only difference was that the worldview of this world was different, much like a novel.
In Jiang Tan’s original world, there were only two genders. There weren’t so many strange settings. In this world, besides the two sexes, there were classifications like Alpha, Beta, and Omega. With things arranged this way, Jiang Tan felt that they probably had to build a lot more toilets.
The body she had transmigrated into had dropped out of school at sixteen to start working. Even though she later differentiated into an Alpha, her lack of education meant many good jobs were out of her reach. After her grandmother passed away, she felt she had no lingering attachments. After living a muddled life for two years and finding it meaningless, she had ended her own life.
When Jiang Tan arrived, she had received the original host’s memories. Knowing the original host’s past, her expression couldn’t help but turn complicated; she felt the two of them were quite similar.
In her original world, Jiang Tan had certainly started as a “rich second generation.” However, during her sophomore year of university, her family went bankrupt and fell deep into debt. Her parents couldn’t handle the blow and jumped off a building together, leaving Jiang Tan with nothing but a huge mess. Jiang Tan, having been accustomed to a leisurely life, wasn’t a particularly ambitious person, and she was naturally helpless in the face of those debts.
The debt collectors hounded her so much that she couldn’t continue her studies. She could only take a leave of absence to earn her own living expenses while trying to find ways to pay back the money.
It was just that… she had no degree and no technical skills. She was barely managing to feed herself, which was an uncanny coincidence with the original host’s situation.
The winding alley entrances were lit only by dim, yellowish lights, looking like a beast lying in wait, opening its deep abyss of a mouth for someone to walk into its trap. The old Jiang Tan would have been a bit intimidated by such a scene, but after being poor for so long, she felt that nothing could be more terrifying than being a “poor ghost.”
Jiang Tan yawned. Her vision grew a bit blurry because of it. She blinked, squeezing out the tears from her eyes, and raised her hand to wipe them away before her vision cleared again.
She was already so tired. If it weren’t for the foundation of her previous hard life, this kind of existence—moving bricks during the day and delivering food at night—was something no one would want to live!
Suddenly, as she drove past an alleyway, she caught a whiff of an elegant and fresh floral scent. But it was different from a normal flower fragrance; it was as if it were dusted with a layer of powdered sugar. Within the freshness, there was a hint of sweetness, yet no matter how intense the scent became, it didn’t feel cloyingly sweet. Instead, it felt like a clear spring flowing into parched earth, chilling and extremely sweet.
Jiang Tan froze for a moment, thinking the scent resembled Night-Blooming Cereus. Moreover, the fragrance seemed to explode suddenly in an instant, only to be quickly suppressed, leaving behind only a faint trail.
It was clearly not a normal flower scent.
Having lived in this world for a while, Jiang Tan immediately realized that this might be someone’s pheromones—and specifically, the pheromones of an Omega.
Because in that very instant, the gland on the back of her neck had a slight reaction.
Although she didn’t know what was happening, it wasn’t a rare occurrence in this world for someone to release pheromones. Jiang Tan didn’t think too much of it, intending to leave quickly to avoid offending the person. She was just about to increase her grip on the throttle when she heard some rustling sounds nearby. Even though the voices were lowered, they still didn’t escape the sharp five senses of an Alpha.
“Find that person quickly! She already drank that glass of wine; she can’t have run far!”
“If she really gets away, you and I are both dead afterward!”
Hearing those words, Jiang Tan’s heart sank like a stone into a lake. Almost instinctively, she immediately drove her scooter into a nearby resident’s parking area for two-wheeled vehicles, cut the engine, and ran toward the place where the scent she had just smelled was strongest.
If it was truly as those people said, the owner of the pheromones she had smelled earlier certainly hadn’t released them voluntarily. And that so-called “glass of wine” likely had something added to it.
Thinking this, Jiang Tan’s pace quickened by a few points, while she simultaneously controlled herself not to make too much noise.
At this moment, Jiang Tan couldn’t help but be grateful that she was an Alpha with a “dog’s nose.” Although that Omega pheromone had been hidden away, Jiang Tan still relied on that tiny bit of lingering trace to find a woman hiding in a pile of junk at the end of a dead-end alley.
It was very dark here. Jiang Tan could hardly see anyone, but she could still smell the increasingly clear, ghostly, cold fragrance as she approached, and hear the woman’s uncontrollable, rapid breathing.
However, along with the increasingly violent fluctuations of pheromones, Jiang Tan understood that the other party was wary of her presence. She hurried to release her own pheromones to envelop the other’s, preventing them from leaking out and being smelled by others.
“Don’t be afraid. I just saw people looking for you. I’ll take you away.” Jiang Tan pursed her lips for a moment and spoke quickly to explain. There was no more time; she could already feel those people getting closer.
Although she didn’t consider herself a great person, she really couldn’t stand by and watch when encountering such a thing. If she had actually left today, she would have kept imagining what would happen to this person after being found. Such thoughts would lead her to think of more and more terrifying scenarios, and her heart would be tortured by that state of mind.
Jiang Tan didn’t want her heart to suffer any torment.
A sweet yet slightly bitter scent of licorice completely enveloped her. After sniffing that taste that felt like a thirst-quenching spring, Jiang Shuyue, who had a splitting headache, tried her best to control the shivering of her body. But upon hearing the person’s words, she still had no intention of letting down her guard.
“They’re coming. I’ll get you out of here first.” Jiang Tan felt that there really wasn’t any time left. At that moment, she didn’t care about the other party’s wishes and hurriedly picked her up to run out of the dead-end alley. If they were found in this position, there would truly be nowhere to run.
Jiang Tan carried the person and moved quickly. Fortunately, she had frequently run through these places while delivering food and had a certain understanding of the area. However, just as she ran out of an alley, she saw several men in suits scattered and searching. Among them was a man in a jacket…
Jiang Tan didn’t dare look more. Her eyes quickly scanned the surroundings. Carrying the woman, she arrived at the back door of a row of self-built houses. Before those people could find them, she quickly tried pushing the back doors.
The first one didn’t open. It wasn’t until she saw the third house’s door slightly ajar that Jiang Tan breathed a sigh of relief. She hurried inside with the woman, then carefully closed and locked the door, keeping the noise to an absolute minimum.
Jiang Tan knew this area well. Many relocated households lived here. These families took the land and money they received to build these houses; besides the floors they lived on, the rest were rented out. The front was for shops, and the back was where the tenants entered and exited. Many tenants, for the convenience of food delivery, had the drivers bring orders directly to their doors, so the back doors were basically kept open.
The woman had clearly not known this when she was hiding earlier, which was why she had hidden in the darkest dead-end alley.
It wasn’t until they were inside that Jiang Tan, with the help of the sensor light, saw the appearance of the woman in her arms clearly. She couldn’t help but be stunned for a moment.
This woman was undoubtedly a creation hand-sculpted by Nüwa herself. Every feature was exquisitely beautiful, polished and carved with detail—a perfect masterpiece beyond reproach. Even though her cheeks were flushed with an unnatural crimson due to the drug, it didn’t diminish her beauty; instead, it added a layer of indescribable charm.
Jiang Tan immediately looked away. To prevent the residents upstairs from discovering that strangers had sneaked in, she hurried into the first-floor bathroom with the woman and didn’t dare turn on the light.
As the sensor light outside went out, only the sound of their two hearts beating violently remained.
The scent of Night-Blooming Cereus in her breath became increasingly sweet. Jiang Tan also felt the gland on the back of her neck throbbing uncomfortably. She couldn’t help but lower her voice and say, “Can’t you restrain yourself a little?”
Although she wouldn’t lose her mind and pounce on her, the feeling of having to fight against bodily instincts was indeed unpleasant.
However, the only response she got was the woman’s thin panting; if anything, the pheromones became even more restless.
Jiang Tan understood that she couldn’t stay here for long in this situation. She took a deep breath and said, “Hold on a bit longer. I’ll take you to the hospital in a while.”
Because Jiang Shuyue, who was forcing herself to stay conscious, was already at her limit. Resisting her body’s abnormality and enduring the headache, she refused, “Can’t go to the hospital.”
“In your condition, if you don’t go…” Halfway through her sentence, Jiang Tan stopped again. Recalling what she had seen earlier, she vaguely understood the woman’s concerns.
But if she didn’t go to the hospital, how would the woman’s situation be handled? Those intense pheromones, full of desire, showed she was very likely stimulated into a heat cycle by some kind of drug.
“Hold on a bit longer. I’ll go buy an inhibitor for you later,” Jiang Tan said through gritted teeth, her heart aching so much it was practically bleeding.
If they went to the hospital, she could just drop the person off and let her face the bill herself. But if she went to buy the inhibitor, it would truly be coming out of her own pocket!
And in the woman’s condition, she would definitely need a high-strength inhibitor. Even more expensive!
