- Chapter 16 - Pleasing Others
Su Su swore she was really just asking out of the kindness of her heart.
Ye Qingqing’s current state of panicked confusion made one feel an irrepressible urge to tease her.
Su Su walked over unhurriedly, hooking her finger under the cat’s chin to tilt it upward, her wicked peach-blossom eyes flashing with a spark of electricity.
“What’s this? Who was the one scratching at the door so impatiently just now while I was inside? Now that I’ve come out, you’re acting all demure. Or is it that a cat gets too lonely, and you want me to go back in and scrub your back?”
The languid tone brushed against the heart like a stray feather. Ye Qingqing couldn’t help but shudder; she took a half-step back to dodge, her cat face flushing a deep red.
Su Su didn’t tease her further. She brushed past the cat’s shoulder and sat down at the dressing table to apply her toner and lotion.
Ye Qingqing stood there dazed, stroking her chin.
Does this human have some kind of secret weapon hidden in her claws? Why is this King’s face burning so much?
Having finished her skincare routine, Su Su lay on the bed playing with her phone.
That blind date partner who called himself Su Bing had sent a flurry of messages. She tapped into the dialogue box and re-typed the self-introduction that had been cut short earlier.
A Drop in the Ocean: Sorry, I was tied up with things during the day and am only seeing this now. My name is Su Su, nice to meet you!
The reply came almost instantly.
Stargazing: Not late at all! I only played one, two, three, four, five rounds of games, went downstairs for a COVID test, grabbed a bowl of Zhajiangmian on the way, came back to the dorm and played one, two, three more games, and just as I got reported, your message popped up. This was Su Su’s first blind date. The other party’s response wasn’t stiff and formal like the ones described online; he was humorous with a touch of the everyday—a bit of a chatterbox. However, this kind of “logbook” style of chatting made it very easy for two strangers to find topics of conversation.
Su Su read it through seriously and replied with a face-palm emoji.
Stargazing: Have you had dinner? What did you eat? (The First Style of Su-style Matchmaking)
A Drop in the Ocean: …
A Drop in the Ocean: I have. I had hot pot. You?
Stargazing: Like I said above, I had Zhajiangmian
A Drop in the Ocean: It’s so late, why aren’t you resting? Don’t you have work tomorrow?
Stargazing: I do. I just wanted to struggle a bit longer to see if I could catch a reply. Gif: Cat head burger
As the two went back and forth, the phone chimed incessantly with notifications. Ye Qingqing finally stopped being awkward. She slowly crawled onto the bed and poked her head over, her cat eyes darting stealthily toward the screen.
Su Su pretended not to notice and continued typing in the input bar.
Ye Qingqing couldn’t understand the complex characters on the screen; she just stared at the animated image of two slices of bread squishing a cat’s head, her cheeks puffing in and out.
“Meow~” (You humans are truly outrageous!)
Sensing her gaze, Su Su quickly selected a photo of Qinqin from her phone album when she was a kitten and made an identical meme to send over.
Ye Qingqing: !!!
She wanted to argue with her, but the human pretended nothing had happened. Su Su turned over, back turned, and continued chatting with the friend named Stargazing.
Left to stare blankly in anger, Ye Qingqing hopped over to the other side and squinted at her.
Su Su turned again, clutching her phone with both hands, continuing to type.
Ye Qingqing followed her relentlessly, her cat eyes glaring at the screen.
The human simply pulled the quilt over her head and tucked in all four corners.
Ye Qingqing lowered her head and tried to nudge it open a few times, but she couldn’t squeeze in and gave up.
She jumped off the bed, picked up the phone on the desk, and tapped the Tmall Teacher app.
“Meow~” (How should this King act to make that human pay attention to me immediately!)
A link was quickly generated on the homepage, with a few words annotated in Cat Language below.
“Your Majesty, please click and see!”
Ye Qingqing tapped in and read every word carefully.
“Many ‘poop-scoopers’ have a common fetish: they love to collect our excrement. Sometimes when they are busy and have no time for us, we can attract their attention through the act of excretion…”
Ye Qingqing found the reading quite overwhelming.
What a strange fetish. I truly cannot understand you foolish humans!
A few minutes later, the long-unused litter box began to rustle. Within the small space, a familiar scent of feline waste wafted through the air.
Ye Qingqing’s plump figure emerged from the litter box. She shook the litter off her paws, scurried onto the bed, and stepped heavily onto the girl’s chest.
“Meow!” (I heard you humans like collecting poop. This King has laid it out for you go pick it up!)
Even through the quilt, Su Su could smell the pungent odor. A million “grass mud horses” galloped through her mind. She threw back the covers and came eye-to-eye with the round furball.
“Meow!”
“What are you ‘meowing’ for?! Are you the Poop King?!”
Su Su couldn’t stand the smell; she covered her nose and went to scoop the litter.
Ye Qingqing followed her with her plump body, squatting nearby to observe silently.
Indeed, just as the book said. This human actually likes picking up poop. It seems this King must eat more in the future!
After Su Su finished scooping, she returned to bed, ready to sleep.
Ye Qingqing chewed on the feathers of a teaser wand, the bell jingling and clattering loudly.
Tossing and turning under the covers, Su Su couldn’t fall asleep. She felt like the bed was empty, as if something was missing.
She poked her head out and called toward the floor.
“Poop King?”
Hearing the voice, Ye Qingqing paused her play and looked back at her.
Su Su lifted a corner of the sheet and patted the mattress.
“Come, get up here!”
Ye Qingqing ignored her and went back to biting the feathers.
You say ‘come up’ and I’m supposed to come up? This King refuses!
Clearly, the proud Cat King was throwing a tantrum again.
Su Su slipped out of bed, scooped up the round furball from the floor, and dove back under the covers.
Ye Qingqing let out muffled cries as she was tucked inside.
Su Su forced her into the crook of her arm, her slender fingers stroking the cat’s back.
“Be a good Poop King, okay? Stay and sleep with sister?”
Without realizing it, little Qinqin had acquired yet another name: Poop King.
After struggling for a moment in the girl’s arms, she gave up. Sniffing the faint scent of mint on the human, she took a deep breath and flopped down.
Su Su lowered her head, rubbing her chin against the furry head a few times, and fell into a peaceful sleep.
The next morning, the cat woke up, but the human hadn’t.
Having been pinned down all night, Ye Qingqing’s body was somewhat numb, yet she felt strangely warm. She lay there longingly for a few more minutes before finally becoming restless, her small head burrowing back and forth in the crook of the human’s arm.
Su Su was nudged awake.
“Mm… just a little longer…”
Her thin, soft voice carried a hint of morning grumpiness, sounding like a plea.
She buried her face back into the kitten’s body to continue sleeping, her breathing shallow and uneven.
Ye Qingqing felt the warmth. She wanted to escape, yet she was loath to leave.
“Meow~”
Su Su placed an index finger against the cat’s lips and exhaled softly.
“Shh, no shouting. Sleep a bit more!”
“Meow!” (You human are truly lazy!)
In her groggy state, Su Su pressed her lips against the cat’s ear and kissed it, just as she had countless times before.
“My dear Qinqin, sleep with sister a little longer. Muah~”
Ye Qingqing was utterly speechless internally, but her body was honest; she lay obediently on the human’s arm and enjoyed the affection.
“Meow!” (This King shall indulge you one more time. Do not do this again!)
It wasn’t until the alarm rang for the fifth time that Su Su reached for the phone on the nightstand. She sat up with a start.
Ye Qingqing was dazed from being suddenly tossed off the arm. She crawled out of the quilt, her claws grabbing the human’s arm to demand an explanation.
“Meow!” (What is wrong with you?!)
Shift started at nine o’clock. It was currently 8:42 AM Beijing time. The deadline was imminent; she had no time to chat. She grabbed the fat scruff of the cat’s neck and pulled her back.
“Go play somewhere else, don’t bother me!”
Ye Qingqing’s eyes went wide: Ungrateful human, how can you be so brazen!
Su Su brushed her teeth and washed her face in one continuous motion. She didn’t even have time for makeup; she just patted on some toner and lotion, grabbed her bag, and headed for the door.
Ye Qingqing was still sulking and didn’t look up as the girl rushed out.
A few minutes later, having already waited for the elevator, Su Su dashed back in. She scanned the room for her cat, and seeing Ye Qingqing still there, she lunged forward, scooped her up, and held her in the air.
Ye Qingqing felt a bit smothered, kicking her legs and meowing.
“Let go of this King! What are you doing?”
Su Su tightened her grip slightly, her peach-blossom eyes meeting the cat’s large, round ones.
“I’m going to work. Be good and wait for me at home, okay?”
Ye Qingqing was forced to look at the person before her, her expression quite dazed.
The next second, the girl leaned in, and a kiss as light as a dragonfly skimming the water brushed across the cat’s lips.
