- Chapter 14 - Hostility
Susu quickly stepped on her foot, smiling as she interacted with the girl.
“Quick, have a seat! This is my younger cousin; she loves to joke around. This is just her way of saying hello and greeting you!”
Ye Qingqing: !!!
What greeting? This King is protecting you!
The girl in the baseball cap was, after all, a cat, and her competitive spirit was extremely strong. Not knowing that the person in front of her was the Cat King, she also curled her lips and let out a provocative “meow.”
Then, extending her claws, she used very fluent human speech to distort the meaning of that meow.
“Hello, cousin. My name is Qian Xixi. It’s a pleasure to meet you!”
Ye Qingqing was just about to bare her teeth when she was pinched again from under the table. To avoid exposing her identity, she had no choice but to keep a cold face, stretch out her claws, and reply with two words in human speech that wasn’t quite fluent yet.
“Hell—o!”
The cow-cat Xixi became even more unscrupulous, using her years of experience lingering in the human world to stifle her.
“Has cousin just returned from abroad? Your Chinese isn’t very smooth!”
She was a descendant of the Sky Cat tribe; the world of network information was their domain, and she could obtain first-hand data from the human world.
Ye Qingqing was a newcomer. In all matters, she relied on a rather unreliable Sky Cat teacher. No matter how smart she was, she wasn’t as well-informed as Qian Xixi.
She couldn’t understand the obscure words coming out of this creature’s cat-mouth. She just stared with both eyes and remained silent.
Susu hurried to smooth things over.
“Xixi’s surname is Qian, and Sister Xiaoju’s surname is also Qian. You two are family!”
At this moment, Qian Xiaoju acted like a caring older sister, pouring tea into Susu’s cup while ushering the girl into her seat.
“Don’t just stand there, come sit, come sit!”
Cow-cat Xixi held her tray and trotted over to sit beside her, her turquoise eyes squinting.
“Hehe, thank you, Sister. Sister, you are so kind!”
Ye Qingqing let out a look of disgust and clicked her tongue.
Vixens, not a single one of them is any good!
Susu sensed her hostility and squeezed her finger, once again signaling with her eyes: Don’t cause trouble.
Although she was very reluctant, she didn’t make any more small moves. Just like that, two humans and two cats gathered at one table.
“Yixidi” was a health-conscious chicken hotpot restaurant. Qian Xiaoju and Susu had been there many times. They took out their phones and began scanning the QR code to order, leaving the two cats to stare each other down.
Ye Qingqing secretly bared her teeth; cow-cat Xixi stuck out her tongue in provocation. Ye Qingqing was so angry her whiskers practically trembled.
Qian Xiaoju, being sharp-eyed, noticed the two hadn’t moved and started to ask.
“Why aren’t you two ordering?”
Susu was afraid her little cat’s identity would be exposed, so she quickly stepped in to cover for her.
“Sister Xiaoju, my cousin’s phone is out of battery. I’ll order for her!”
Cow-cat Xixi was left on her own, feeling awkward as could be.
Ye Qingqing looked at the other girl’s embarrassed state as she fumbled in her pockets pretending to look for a phone. Finally winning a round, she shrugged, her cat-like pupils flashing with mocking light.
Cow-cat Xixi was young and impetuous, and her desire to win was naturally strong. She refused to admit defeat. In a moment of desperation, she pinched her own thigh, plucked a tuft of fur, and instantly transformed it into a thin, tablet-like object. She scanned the QR code on the table.
With a “beep,” Qian Xiaoju noticed the item in her hand and grew curious.
“Eh? What is that high-tech thing you have?”
Cow-cat Xixi’s competitive face instantly turned soft and gentle.
“Sister, this is the ‘Xizi Tablet’ I manufactured myself!”
Qian Xiaoju was born with a strong desire for electronic products. Seeing her eyes light up, cow-cat Xixi took the opportunity to climb the social ladder.
“Sister, I major in Artificial Intelligence. While I was studying abroad and had nothing to do, I liked to tinker with random things.”
Blah blah blah the human and the cat quickly hit it off.
Susu didn’t have much interest in electronics. At that moment, she was racking her brain, trying to select food her cat could manage to eat from the limited menu.
After placing the order, the pot base came out within a few minutes. The waiter brought tray after tray of food. Everything was new to Ye Qingqing; several times she nearly stuck her claws into the pot, only to be stopped by the person beside her.
Susu patiently taught her how to eat, placing food she thought the cat could accept into her bowl. Several times during the process, she was spotted by Qian Xiaoju, but Xiaoju pretended she hadn’t seen a thing and continued chatting about domestic life with the girl next to her.
Susu sensed her owner’s mood, and cow-cat Xixi also very thoughtfully picked up food that Xiaoju liked.
It was the first time Qian Xiaoju had been taken care of like this, and she felt a bit flattered. The two of them chatted idly, feeling an inexplicable sense of kinship.
The meal ended in an atmosphere that contradicted its original purpose. After exchanging pleasantries, Qian Xiaoju told Susu to call her after getting home, and the groups waved goodbye once more.
Susu led Ye Qingqing out of the mall, but they didn’t go straight to the bus station. Instead, they went to a nearby mobile service center.
In today’s human world, the internet had become ubiquitous; everything in life relied on mobile phones. Ye Qingqing had nothing, which made everything inconvenient, so Susu decided to get her a phone first.
The store had a promotion for “couples’ plans.” Since her own phone was broken from a fall anyway, she took home two handsets. She used her own ID to open a secondary SIM card for Ye Qingqing, downloaded common apps, and used her own real-name authentication for all the account registrations. As long as they didn’t travel far, it would suffice for now.
It was late. The two took a taxi back. Ye Qingqing wasn’t used to small spaces; she got carsick as soon as she entered and fell into a deep sleep with her head burrowed into the hollow of Susu’s shoulder.
Susu was also quite tired, leaning against the back seat to rest. For some reason, after this round of “medication,” she felt her physical strength recovering very quickly. As she smelled the milky scent of the girl in her arms, her thoughts couldn’t help but wander.
Why would a perfectly good cat turn into a human? This is clearly a terrifying and shocking thing, yet I subconsciously defend her and want to keep her by my side time and time again.
The car pulled up steadily at the bottom of the apartment complex. The driver smiled and invited them to get out.
“Take care, you two. Remember to give a five-star review!”
Ye Qingqing woke with a start from her dream, looking dazed as she was led out of the car by her owner.
Susu’s beautiful peach-blossom eyes curved as she politely said goodbye.
“Thank you, Master. Goodbye!”
After getting out, she stood still and tapped her slender fingers on the phone screen, giving a five-star review on the spot.
Everyone was a working person, and life wasn’t easy; she never made things difficult for others over such small matters.
The two of them took the elevator upstairs. Ye Qingqing looked around curiously. In places where there were no people, Susu didn’t bother to restrain her, letting the cat explore these new things.
They unlocked the door and entered. The small rental apartment wasn’t as clean and tidy as usual. Besides the traces left by the previous battle between the human and the cat, there were pet toys scattered about. The cat feeder still had food in it, and the water dispenser was bubbling like a small fountain.
For some reason, Ye Qingqing suddenly felt a warmth in her heart. She tilted her head up and let out a “meow” at Susu.
Just then, with a ding, the phone rang.
Susu gave a symbolic stroke to her long, black hair.
“Go play! Be good!”
Ye Qingqing reluctantly picked up a teaser wand from the floor, poking at the feathers with a lack of interest.
Susu checked the message. It was from the blind date candidate. Separated from that was a voice message from Qian Xiaoju. She pressed play.
“Baby, are you home yet?”
Ye Qingqing quickly threw down the teaser wand. With a “meow-ow,” she drifted over in an instant.
