- Chapter 78 - Help Me Scrub My Back
Jiang Luoyue nodded with great difficulty. At the very least, she had recognized what it was, so that surely counted as “drawing well” in some sense, right?
However, on this cat, the eyes weren’t eyes and the nose wasn’t a nose. If Yun Jian had simply drawn a cat sitting quietly, it might have been easier; but he insisted on capturing cats in various dynamic poses, which was far beyond his skill level.
Yun Jian naturally saw through how insincere her praise was.
“You draw it, then?” Yun Jian handed over his brush, his brow furrowed in a look of displeasure.
Jiang Luoyue thought this Demon Sovereign was quite temperamental. Couldn’t he just look at a real cat and compare his drawing to see the difference? Why ask such an awkward question?
She gave an awkward smile. “I’m not good at drawing.”
Since arriving in the cultivation world, she hadn’t touched a brush. In the modern world, the last time she had drawn a cat was for a primary school blackboard poster.
“Just try. It can’t be uglier than mine,” Yun Jian admitted his lack of talent quite candidly this time.
Jiang Luoyue hadn’t expected him to say that, but she certainly couldn’t agree out loud. She took the brush and gave it a go. She drew a simple, obedient cat sitting upright. While not a masterpiece, it was unmistakably a cat.
Yun Jian offered a casual critique: “Tsk. Stiff. It has no soul.”
Jiang Luoyue was speechless. I told you from the start I wasn’t good at this!
Yun Jian took the brush back and resumed his obsession with drawing cats. Jiang Luoyue was genuinely curious about why he was so fixated on them.
“Why do you like drawing cats so much?” she finally asked, unable to contain her curiosity.
Yun Jian froze for a moment.
“If you don’t want to say, never mind,” Jiang Luoyue said, carefully watching his expression.
Yun Jian snorted, his face unreadable. “It’s nothing I can’t talk about.”
“Before I became the Sovereign, I raised a cat,” Yun Jian began. “It was just an ordinary cat. I fed it spiritual herbs to extend its life, but it still left me after only forty-odd years.”
“A stupid cat that couldn’t cultivate,” Yun Jian concluded.
But Jiang Luoyue heard the loneliness hidden in his voice. Perhaps Yun Jian had lived for so many years without ever finding someone he could truly call a “friend,” which was why he so deeply missed an ordinary little cat.
“Then you’re quite amazing. It’s very rare for an ordinary cat to live even twenty years; you must have taken very good care of it,” Jiang Luoyue said with a gentle smile. “I have a spiritual pet too. Would you like to see her?”
“What does it look like?” Yun Jian asked.
“A little turtle,” Jiang Luoyue saw the look of disappointment on his face and quickly added, “But after she takes human form, she’s a super cute little girl!”
“Oh?” Yun Jian responded, but Jiang Luoyue could tell he wasn’t interested.
Alright, he’s strictly a fan of fluff.
Jiang Luoyue didn’t notice that while she was focused on grinding ink, Yun Jian stole a few glances at her.
Several days passed in this routine. During this time, Li Changting only came by twice to stand guard while Yun Jian refined artifacts.
“You may go back for now. Tonight, a puppet will come for you,” Yun Jian said. His patience seemed thin today, and he dismissed them early.
By now, they knew the way to their rooms and didn’t need the puppet to lead them. This gave Li Changting a chance to speak freely.
“Junior Sister, he’s calling for you tonight. Can you… not go?” Li Changting was worried.
His Junior Sister—no, his partner—was as beautiful as a celestial being. Could the Demon Sovereign have designs on her beauty?
“If he were that kind of person, he wouldn’t be living alone in the Nether Abyss; he’d be surrounded by beauties,” Jiang Luoyue said, not particularly worried. If Yun Jian actually felt lust for her, it would actually make things easier to handle.
“I’m just worried about Yue Wenqiu and the others, and whether the missing cultivators have been found,” she added. She thought of the jade plaque Yue Chongshan had given her; without spiritual power, she couldn’t contact anyone.
“I’ll have to try and probe for information later,” she sighed.
“Junior Sister, can I stay with you for a bit first?” After being separated for days, Li Changting was feeling insecure. He wasn’t even thinking about “that”; he just wanted to be near her.
“Of course,” Jiang Luoyue nodded, and they returned to her room.
Li Changting immediately pulled her into a hug. To be honest, she misunderstood at first and almost reached for his belt, but his words stopped her.
“I’ve been so worried about you these past few days,” he murmured. “He hasn’t done anything to you while you were alone, has he?”
“No, he just had me grind ink,” she smiled. “And it turns out he loves drawing cats, though they’re hideously ugly.”
Li Changting felt a bit more at ease. “Keep your voice down. The walls have ears, and this palace is full of Yun Jian’s puppets.”
“But he asked for you tonight. The timing is so… I can’t help but worry.” He brushed a stray hair from her temple.
Jiang Luoyue hugged his waist and rubbed her cheek against his chest. “Don’t worry, Senior Brother. I know what I’m doing.”
As she said this, Luan Yao mocked her relentlessly in her mind.
“Hahahaha, ‘know what you’re doing’! If your Eldest Senior Brother knew you were planning to ‘collect’ the Demon Sovereign, he’d probably lose his mind.”
“Shut up,” Jiang Luoyue snapped mentally. This was her way of contributing to the harmonious co-existence of demons, foxes, and immortal sects!
When night fell, the puppet arrived as expected.
“What exactly are you going for?” Li Changting blocked the puppet, trying to get an answer. The puppet, reflecting Yun Jian’s lack of interest in explaining, ignored him.
Jiang Luoyue patted the back of Li Changting’s hand. “It’s fine. I’ll be back soon.”
She followed the puppet. When they arrived at the destination, she was completely stunned.
A bathhouse?
The Demon Sovereign called her to a bathhouse? This was moving a bit too fast. She thought he seemed like a serious person, but it turned out he did have designs on her.
The puppet exited and closed the door.
Jiang Luoyue stood there, dazed. When Yun Jian didn’t speak, she slowly and hesitantly began to undress.
Suddenly, Yun Jian spoke: “Come here and scrub my back.”
Jiang Luoyue: …?
Excuse me? So you’re just looking for a bath attendant?
She silently pulled her robes back together, walked to the edge of the pool, and knelt down to scrub his back. Not knowing how much pressure to use, she kept her movements light.
His physique was actually quite impressive. Despite wearing nothing but black every day, his skin was quite fair. His back was broad and well-defined; Jiang Luoyue couldn’t help but admire the view.
To Yun Jian, the feeling of those soft hands kneading and pressing against him felt remarkably like the paws of the cat he once raised.
