- Chapter 74 - The Illusion (Part 2)
Song Weiyuan and Jiang Luoyue coordinated perfectly, securing a vast amount of supplies for the base. Consequently, the leadership placed great value on these two talents.
Jiang Luoyue always kept a very close eye on him. Others would often joke, asking if he was truly her cousin or if he was her “lover-boy.” Whenever that happened, Jiang Luoyue would simply sweep a cold, heavy gaze over them, her aura so oppressive that they wouldn’t dare utter another word.
Song Weiyuan would quickly step in to smooth things over. “I’m the only blood relative she has left in this world; of course I’m going to look out for my sister.”
However, during a routine supply run, disaster struck. Zombies usually attacked mindlessly, but they encountered an Evolved Zombie that was directing the horde from behind the scenes. They fought tooth and nail to break out, but they lost two teammates—and Song Weiyuan was mortally wounded.
His injuries were so severe that he wouldn’t even be able to turn into a zombie. The other survivors wanted to persuade Jiang Luoyue to leave him behind, but seeing her clutching him tightly, they couldn’t bring themselves to say it. They were comrades-in-arms; their hearts ached just as much.
Jiang Luoyue brought Song Weiyuan back to the base. She refused to let him lie exposed in the wilderness. If she brought him back, she could bury him within the base walls, granting him at least a few moments of peaceful rest.
After getting off the truck, she carried Song Weiyuan back to her quarters without saying a word. She was consumed by grief; if only she could have brought the pills from the cultivation world with her.
A teammate tried to follow her, but the base commander stopped him. “Forget it. Let Little Jiang have some peace. Give her a double share of today’s supplies. Song Weiyuan made a great contribution; give it all to his sister.” The commander was also pained; the base had lost three capable members in a single day.
Jiang Luoyue laid Song Weiyuan on the sofa. He looked at her helplessly. “Actually, you didn’t need to go through the trouble of bringing me back.”
“I wasn’t going to leave you out there,” Jiang Luoyue said firmly, still fighting back tears.
“Cousin, do you believe in transmigration?” Jiang Luoyue asked out of the blue.
Song Weiyuan froze, then gave a gentle smile. “If even zombies exist, I suppose transmigration must be possible too.” His smile faltered as he realized something, staring straight into her eyes. “Luoyue… did you transmigrate?”
Tears began to fall in heavy droplets. “Yes. I transmigrated to another world, and then I came back to this timeline. I just didn’t expect that even then, I still wouldn’t be able to save you.”
Song Weiyuan understood now. No wonder he had felt premonitions of death several times, only for Luoyue to save him just in time. He smiled weakly. “Thank you, Brother’s little sister, for letting me live this much longer. So, what kind of world did you go to?”
“A cultivation world. There, you’re the Young Master of a prominent sect. Your talent is amazing, and you have a partner who is your perfect match… a match made in heaven…” Jiang Luoyue sobbed and laughed at the same time.
Song Weiyuan found her look both comical and pitiable. “That’s not important. I only want to know… how are you doing over there?” His voice grew fainter.
Jiang Luoyue knew he was reaching his limit. Death was a fixed reality; she knew nothing could be undone. “I am very happy. I’ve made many like-minded ‘daoist’… friends. I’m a very famous Senior Sister, and my talent is way better than yours…”
“That’s… good…” Before he could finish the word, Song Weiyuan closed his eyes.
Compared to the brutal death of her previous life, he at least died happy this time. Jiang Luoyue wept uncontrollably, cradling his broken body as blood soaked through her clothes. She finally realized that no matter how long she stayed in the cultivation world or how happy she was, she could never forget the pain of the past.
Suddenly, the world around her scattered like dust in the wind. Jiang Luoyue remained in her kneeling position, arms still frozen as if cradling Song Weiyuan.
Thankfully, in this life, Song Weiyuan was still alive.
After calming her racing heart, she focused on her current surroundings. The ground beneath her feet rippled like water with every step, though she was certain she was standing on solid earth. The area was desolate, filled with withered branches and fallen leaves.
The demonic energy here was far too dense, severely restricting the use of spiritual qi. Unable to fly, she had to proceed on foot. After walking for a long time, she heard the sound of fighting. Worried it might be one of her companions, she ran toward the noise with all her might.
She found Li Changting battling a dark shadow—it appeared to be a person shrouded in thick demonic mist. Jiang Luoyue drew her peach branch; despite possessing the power of the Great Transformation stage, she could likely only exert the strength of a Nascent Soul cultivator here.
Sensing her approach, the dark shadow vanished instantly. Her attack missed.
“Senior Brother!” Jiang Luoyue rushed over, pulling Li Changting into her arms.
“Junior Sister? Why are you alone? Where are the others?” Li Changting was surprised to see her. He was heavily injured.
Seeing the large bloodstain on his abdomen, she panicked. “Senior Brother, you’re badly hurt. Have you taken any pills?”
“I have,” Li Changting forced a pale smile. “Fortunately, I have plenty of pills, so I won’t die just yet. It’s just a shame I’m such a defenseless Alchemist… Junior Sister, it’s dangerous for you to stay with me.”
“We need to reunite with the others as soon as possible,” Li Changting added, his voice laced with his usual self-deprecation.
Though he had learned some self-defense techniques from Jiang Luoxing, they were only enough to protect himself, not her. Thinking of this, he realized he quite liked that young man, Jiang Luoxing; the boy seemed cold and defensive toward every man around Luoyue, but when trouble actually struck, he was incredibly reliable.
“Senior Brother, I am a Soul Transformation cultivator! You don’t need to worry so much,” Jiang Luoyue said, patting her chest. “I will protect you.”
Li Changting laughed awkwardly. “I’m so useless, needing my Junior Sister to protect me.”
“Senior Brother, why do you always talk about yourself like that?” Jiang Luoyue sighed helplessly. “You can refine pills! That is an incredible skill in itself.”
Seeing how despondent he looked, she frowned. Could his injuries be worse than he’s letting on? She reached out and pulled away the hand he was using to clutch his wound.
Jiang Luoyue’s eyes widened in horror.
Li Changting’s dantian was severely damaged, and his spiritual root was fractured. She could feel the spiritual energy—and his very life force—leaking out of his body at an alarming rate. Unless one possessed extraordinary self-healing abilities, pills would be useless against such a wound.
Panicked, Li Changting tried to cover the wound again. “Junior Sister… I…”
“You call this ‘fine’?!” Jiang Luoyue’s voice cracked with a mixture of anger and terror, her eyes instantly turning red.
