- Chapter 62 - Accepting the Inheritance
The Great Demon of the third layer looked like a serpent, yet faint horns protruded from its head.
“Is this a Flood Dragon that has yet to become a true Dragon?” Jiang Luoyue exclaimed in surprise.
“It appears so,” Lin Xi replied, his sword unsheathed as he prepared for battle.
The Flood Dragon seemed far less patient than the previous two guardians. It opened with a devastating move; blinding flashes of lightning filled the sky like a cinematic spectacle, striking directly at them.
Jiang Luoyue quickly deployed her defensive artifacts. The peach blossom branch in her hand unleashed the power of a Great Transcendence stage cultivator, forming a massive protective barrier. She struck back, but the dragon’s scales were incredibly thick, leaving only shallow wounds on its hide.
Incensed by the sight of its own blood, the Flood Dragon flew into a frenzy. It ignored the injuries Lin Xi and Jiang Luoyue inflicted, lashing out with primal fury. Demonic energy from the entire third layer seemed to converge upon its body.
The resulting explosion of energy sent Jiang Luoyue and Lin Xi flying. They both hit the ground, coughing up blood.
“Sister!” Jiang Luoxing rushed to Jiang Luoyue’s side, pulling her into a protective embrace.
Suddenly, the Green Infant Sword vibrated violently. It flew into mid-air, expanding dozens of times its original size to shield them. As it released a soothing wave of spiritual energy to heal Jiang Luoyue and Lin Xi, the sword’s aura caught the Great Demon’s attention.
“How do you possess that sword?” the Great Demon froze, its voice trembling.
Lin Xi looked up in shock. “I have entered this Secret Realm countless times, yet I have never heard the guardians of these three layers speak.”
Ignoring him, the Flood Dragon repeated its question, its voice filled with a haunting nostalgia. “How do you have that sword?”
As it spoke, the dragon retracted its demonic aura. Its eyes grew hollow, as if lost in a distant memory. Suddenly, its gaze shifted to the little turtle in Jiang Luoxing’s arms. “That child…”
“Give it to me! You wicked humans! What are you doing to it? I will not allow you to force a contract upon it!” The Flood Dragon roared and charged toward Jiang Luoxing.
Jiang Luoyue and Lin Xi forced themselves up while Jiang Luoxing hastily drew a defensive formation on the ground. Sensing the tension, the little turtle stirred and snuggled deeper into Luoxing’s arms for safety.
“Don’t be afraid,” Jiang Luoxing whispered, gently stroking its shell.
Seeing this tender gesture, the Flood Dragon halted its attack. “You haven’t formed a contract with it?” it asked in confusion. “How is that possible? Humans usually kill and scramble just to bind themselves to its kind.”
Jiang Luoyue frowned. “What business is that of yours?”
The Flood Dragon stared at them for a long time, recognizing her fierce protection of the small creature. Lin Xi and Jiang Luoyue remained on high alert, ready to strike if the dragon moved. Finally, the dragon stepped back and faded into the mist.
“Go,” its voice echoed in their ears. “Take it to the Ruins of the Divine Beasts.”
They wasted no time. Passing through the third layer, they arrived at the Ruins of the Divine Beasts.
The little turtle’s body flared with heat again. Jiang Luoyue held it close, trying to cool it with her spiritual energy, but it was ineffective. Soon, the ruins stirred with life.
A phantom of a White Tiger leaped from the mist. “We have guests.” Its pupils narrowed into slits as it looked at the turtle. “Yo, isn’t this a cub from the Black Tortoise house? Xuanwu, get out here!”
The group stood stunned. The “little turtle” was actually a descendant of the Xuanwu (Black Tortoise). No wonder it had been so extraordinary.
“Not bad at all. Barely a year old and already formed a core,” the White Tiger remarked, circling Jiang Luoyue.
“Truly that impressive? Let me see,” a Vermilion Bird flew over. To their surprise, the fierce-looking White Tiger had the voice of a charming woman, while the Vermilion Bird spoke with the steady, deep voice of a man.
Finally, the Xuanwu and the Azure Dragon arrived.
“Xuanwu, you’re so slow. I was waiting for you,” the Azure Dragon grumbled, though his tone was that of an old friend enjoying a leisurely stroll.
“My little Xuanwu… is this my great-great-great-great-grandchild? I’ve been dead so long I’ve lost count of the generations,” Xuanwu sighed, his voice sounding ancient and weathered.
“Excuse me, may I interrupt?” Jiang Luoyue spoke up. “I know it’s rude for a ‘small fry’ like me to speak before Divine Beasts, but this little one is burning up.”
“It’s alright,” Xuanwu smiled, looking at Jiang Luoyue with a knowing glint. “It was affected by the divine auras when it entered last time. I shall grant it the inheritance of the Xuanwu clan now, and it will recover.”
Xuanwu paused, sensing a familiar presence around her. “It is good that it follows you. Once it accepts the inheritance, it will break through to the Nascent Soul stage and take human form. I will allow it to form a contract with you. The Xuanwu possess the strongest defense in the world; it will protect you.”
“Thank you, Xuanwu. But the little one is still young. I want it to choose for itself. A contract isn’t important,” Jiang Luoyue said with a smile. She had raised it this long without a bond; she wouldn’t force one now.
Xuanwu chuckled. “You are still the same.”
Jiang Luoyue blinked. “You know me?”
Xuanwu paused. “Has the one following you not told you?”
Who is following me? Jiang Luoyue wondered. “Do you mean Yue Wenqiu?” He was the first person she had met in this world. Given Xuanwu’s cryptic tone, he must know her soul had been replaced.
“No,” Xuanwu said, laughing softly. “You know who she is. Only you can sense her presence.”
The System… Jiang Luoyue realized. The only one always with her, known only to her, was the System. She looked at Xuanwu in shock. “You mean…?”
She hesitated to speak further, fearing she might reveal some forbidden heavenly secret.
“Ah, so you didn’t know.” Xuanwu laughed. “No matter. She will tell you eventually. Once the inheritance is finished, you should give the little one a name.”
Knowing it was the child of a Divine Beast, Jiang Luoyue felt it was improper. “Is that right? You are its elder.”
“It’s fine. Don’t be a stranger,” Xuanwu said warmly.
As the little turtle began to absorb the inheritance, wrapped in the protective wings of the Vermilion Bird, the White Tiger turned to Jiang Luoyue. Though her voice was that of a mature woman, her gaze was kind.
“Since you are here, you might as well accept our inheritances too.”
