- Chapter 49 - Big Promises from Brother Li
Zhao Ziyan was reluctant, but she obeyed him nonetheless.
“Tsk, why haven’t you recovered yet?” Luo Xiuping’s hands roamed over her body. The lust on his face quickly soured into a look of disgust. “Have you not been taking the Yuan-Nourishing Pills?”
“I have,” Zhao Ziyan whispered, her head bowed low.
“Then why is your body still in this state?” Luo Xiuping rubbed his temples in frustration and told her to sit back down.
Zhao Ziyan said nothing, but her hands clenched tightly inside her sleeves, a flicker of venomous resentment passing through her eyes for a fleeting second.
The auction had begun presenting items of real value. Currently on stage was a jade ring, its luster as clear and deep as tranquil spring water. What made this ring special was that it contained a pocket dimension.
While all cultivators had storage pouches, those spaces were limited, easily filled, and—most importantly—could not hold living things. The space within this ring, however, could accommodate living beings, whether they were humans or spirit beasts. Furthermore, the ring came with a built-in defensive array capable of withstanding an attack from a Soul Transformation stage cultivator. It was an top-tier life-saving artifact.
“That’s beautiful. It would look perfect on Luoyue’s hand,” Yue Wenqiu’s eyes lit up. “It’s perfect; we’ve been together for so long, and I haven’t prepared a proper gift for her yet.”
Jiang Luoxing grew tense. He hadn’t bought a gift for his sister either. If Yue Wenqiu bought this for her and he had nothing, would she start favoring Yue Wenqiu more?
“Won’t it be very expensive?” Jiang Luoyue was tempted, but she feared the price tag. “Let’s bid for now, but if it gets too high, we stop, okay?”
Since Yue Wenqiu wanted to give her a gift, she wasn’t going to refuse. A man giving a woman a gift was only natural, after all.
“Twenty thousand spirit stones,” Yue Wenqiu told the attendant, calling out his opening bid. VIPs bid through the attendants to keep their identities anonymous.
Someone immediately followed up. “Twenty-five thousand.”
“How much money do we actually have?” Jiang Luoyue asked nervously.
“If all my pills sell, we should have at least twenty thousand,” Li Changting offered. He felt a bit dejected realizing that all the money from his hard work refining pills was only enough to cover the opening bid of Young Master Yue. An imaginary version of Li Changting appeared in his mind, biting a handkerchief and crying tiny pearls of grief.
“Thirty thousand,” Yue Wenqiu bid again. “Thirty-five thousand,” a voice followed. “Forty thousand,” Yue Wenqiu countered without hesitation.
Hearing that number, Jiang Luoyue felt a bit guilty. She barely had any money in her own pockets.
System, she whispered in her mind, if I converted all the Favorability points I’ve accumulated into spirit stones, how much would I have? Since arriving in this world, she hadn’t spent much and had no real concept of what “tens of thousands” meant. She remembered checking the original host’s storage pouch when she first arrived—there were only about eight thousand spirit stones. Considering the original host’s parents were prominent figures of Ziwei Peak and she was a pampered only child, eight thousand seemed incredibly stingy.
“Two million, four hundred and thirty thousand,” the System replied after a quick tally.
“How much?!” Jiang Luoyue blurted out loud. So much money! She was filthy rich! She hadn’t realized she had accumulated so much favorability in secret.
“Host, you have accumulated 2,430 points of Favorability to date. 1 point can be exchanged for 1,000 spirit stones,” the System explained.
Jiang Luoyue cut off the conversation, basking in the pride of her newfound wealth. She turned around only to find three men and a little turtle all staring at her.
“Sister, who were you talking to?” Jiang Luoxing asked suspiciously.
Jiang Luoyue realized her mistake. In her shock, she had accidentally yelled “How much?!” out loud.
“Does Luoyue think it’s too expensive? Actually, a hundred thousand spirit stones isn’t much for an item at Fengman Pavilion,” Yue Wenqiu said with a smile.
While Jiang Luoyue had been talking to the System, Yue Wenqiu had already won the ring for a final price of one hundred thousand spirit stones. He guessed his competitor was also a man wanting to buy it for a woman he liked. However, most people in the VIP boxes were already high-level cultivators; a defensive artifact wasn’t their top priority.
Jiang Luoyue scratched her head. “I just felt the economic pressure was a bit high.”
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll just send the bill to the Dongyue Sect. Even if they don’t want to pay, they’ll have to,” Yue Wenqiu winked at her.
Jiang Luoyue wasn’t about to spend his parents’ money for real. She nodded for show, but mentally decided to pay him back later or buy him a gift of equal value.
Soon, an attendant entered with a tray. “Guest, here is the jade ring you purchased.”
Yue Wenqiu took the ring and dismissed the attendant. He slid the ring onto Jiang Luoyue’s finger. “Now your defenses are nearly maxed out. You just need to focus on your cultivation next.” He gave her wrist a meaningful squeeze, the implication being anything but subtle.
Jiang Luoyue glared at him. When had Yue Wenqiu become so bold?
After the jade ring, the Longevity Pills were brought out.
“Lower-grade Longevity Pills: one pill extends life by ten years. Starting bid for a set of three.” “Mid-grade Longevity Pills: one pill extends life by fifty years. Starting bid for a single pill.” “Top-grade Longevity Pill: only one available for this session. Starting bid: one million spirit stones.”
Although cultivators lived longer than mortals, progress slowed down in the later stages of cultivation. Life, no matter how long, was still finite. Many failed to ascend simply because they ran out of time; perhaps with an extra century of effort, they would have succeeded.
Jiang Luoyue and her group didn’t care much for them. Most cultivators aimed for ascension, but not everyone lived solely for that goal. To have lived this long and wandered the mortal realm for so many years was already enough.
However, the appearance of the Longevity Pills sent the auction into a frenzy. Bids rang out incessantly. Even the lower-grade pills were selling for a million spirit stones each.
“Heavens, how much will the top-grade one go for? It has to be tens of millions,” Jiang Luoyue exclaimed. “Who are these people? They’re so rich!”
“I didn’t realize Longevity Pills were so valuable. I’m going to practice hard and refine hundreds of them,” Li Changting marveled. He had known they were worth a lot, but seeing the bidding war in person was a revelation. His motivation to cultivate had returned in full force.
“Junior Sister, I’ll refine them for you in the future,” Li Changting said earnestly.
It was the ultimate “big promise”—the kind of “pie in the sky” dream that was hard to fulfill. Jiang Luoyue turned to him, her eyes blinking innocently. “Then you better work hard, Senior Brother.”
