- Chapter 38 - Little Fox Leaves
However, this had little to do with being the only heir; it depended on whether the people in the family were sincere with each other. Seeing that the little fox didn’t want to talk to them, they didn’t press the matter further.
The little fox had its eyes closed, seemingly asleep, but in fact, it was just pretending to sleep, too lazy to move or talk to people. Suddenly, it sensed something, and its small ears twitched keenly. The next second, it got a definitive answer in its mind. It stood up on Jiang Luoyue’s shoulder, warily observing its surroundings, its posture like a spirited little foal.
“What’s wrong? What did you hear, little fellow?” Jiang Luoyue became alert. Yue Wenqiu and Jiang Luoxing’s hands were both on their sword hilts, ready to draw their weapons at any moment.
The little fox didn’t answer them, but instead scanned the four directions, seemingly determining the path. Suddenly, the little fox seemed to find its direction, jumped off Jiang Luoyue, and ran toward the depths of the forest. Its body was small, and its movements were agile and quick, making it hard to see in the dense fog of the forest. Jiang Luoyue followed without a second thought. Yue Wenqiu and Jiang Luoxing quickly followed suit.
The little fox’s speed grew faster and faster. Fearing she would lose it, Jiang Luoyue applied a Speed Talisman to herself, and her speed also increased.
The little fox wanted to shake her off. But it hadn’t intended to leave without saying goodbye. The little fox planned to quickly meet with its subordinates, exchange contact information quickly, and then rush back to Jiang Luoyue, using the excuse that it had gone to defecate. The little fox had gotten separated from its subordinates earlier because it had lost its communication jade slip. It had been staying with Jiang Luoyue, hoping to remain fixed in one place so its subordinates could find it quickly based on the clues it left behind.
But Jiang Luoyue was hot on its heels, making the excuse of needing to defecate somewhat implausible now. It was quite distressed.
“Ah!” Jiang Luoyue accidentally fell into a trap and let out a startled scream. The little fox heard her voice and instinctively turned its head. It didn’t want anything to happen to Jiang Luoyue; even a mere fall would worry it. But it noticed Yue Wenqiu and Jiang Luoxing following, and hardening its heart, it turned and left.
The little fox finally got rid of them and met up with its subordinates.
“Young Master, how are your injuries recovering?” Qing Wen asked, bowing.
“They’re healed,” the little fox’s tone was cold and serious, completely different from the compliant, witty way it acted in front of Jiang Luoyue. Qing Wu looked at the Young Master, who was majestic and dignified, but with a fluffy, dandelion-like appearance, which made him feel a bit tempted to touch it.
“The Great Elder is still pursuing you. What are your plans next?” Qing Wu asked.
“Let’s go back first,” the little fox said. Qing Wen and Qing Wu stepped aside, allowing the little fox to walk ahead, preparing to follow behind. But the little fox seemed to be contemplating something and didn’t take a step.
“Young Master, is there anything else?” Qing Wen asked, confused.
The little fox pursed its lips, and its paws quickly formed a seal, writing a message: “I had to leave immediately due to an urgent situation. I will surely repay your kindness in the future.” The little fox then placed the message inside the storage pouch so that when Jiang Luoyue opened it, the text would appear before her.
Wenwu and Wenqing were snakes, only covered in scales, not fur. They rarely saw the Young Master in his original form, and now, looking at the paws forming the seal, their hearts were utterly charmed.
The little fox averted his gaze from the storage pouch. He sensed the looks his two subordinates were giving him and glared back. “What are you looking at!?”
Wenwu and Wenqing quickly lowered their heads and apologized. “We were just observing Young Master’s expression to determine what Young Master plans to do next.”
“Then did you figure it out?” the little fox asked coldly.
Wenqing and Wenwu were dumbfounded. How could they know what the Young Master was thinking while staring at a broken storage pouch? The message left behind seemed to be for that woman. Wenqing was a little displeased. They had found the Young Master’s trail a few days ago and had been following it. That woman had hugged, cuddled, and kissed the Young Master without any hesitation, and the key was that the Young Master hadn’t resisted. His supposed pushing away with his paws was more like playing hard to get—he was still kissed, wasn’t he?
The little fox didn’t get angry at them. It rummaged through the storage pouch, pulling out all the food inside, and looked at Wenwu and Wenqing. “Whose storage pouch is this? Let me put some things in it.”
Wenwu obediently took out his storage pouch and opened it. After confirming all the food was taken out, the little fox handed the crossbody storage pouch to Wenwu. “Go return this to that woman.”
Wenwu took the storage pouch, and the little fox quickly departed with Wenqing.
Jiang Luoxing and Yue Wenqiu heard Jiang Luoyue’s scream and also quickly used Speed Talismans to chase after her, but they couldn’t find Jiang Luoyue or the little fox.
“Where did she go?” Jiang Luoxing was anxious. His sister had disappeared right under his nose. “It’s all that stinking fox’s fault for running off!”
“Wait here. I’ll go ahead and look for the fox,” Yue Wenqiu continued forward.
Wenwu, who was secretly watching them, knew that Jiang Luoyue was with them, so he threw the storage pouch on the ground and turned to leave. Yue Wenqiu noticed the movement, chased over, and saw the storage pouch near the tree root, which was the crossbody bag Jiang Luoyue had modified. It seemed the little fox had left it there on purpose. Yue Wenqiu picked up the crossbody bag and turned back.
The little fox’s background was unknown, and it had said it would only stay for a while. Yue Wenqiu decided not to dwell on it; finding Luoyue was the priority.
“Big Brother Yue, where is the little fox?” Jiang Luoxing saw the crossbody storage pouch in Yue Wenqiu’s hand but no sign of the little fox.
Yue Wenqiu opened the storage pouch, and the two lines of text appeared before them.
“I had to leave immediately due to an urgent situation. I will surely repay your kindness in the future.”
“The little fox is gone. It seems it’s time for us to part ways,” Yue Wenqiu frowned. “Did you see Luoyue?”
Jiang Luoxing shook his head. He had just seen Jiang Luoyue fall right here, but there was clearly level ground, no trap.
“There must be an array here. She probably fell into one,” Yue Wenqiu said.
“Then what do we do? Can we enter? How do we enter?” Jiang Luoxing asked anxiously.
“I’m not an Array Cultivator. I can’t find the entrance to the array,” Yue Wenqiu shook his head helplessly. “We can wait here first. If we still don’t find her after two days, I’ll return to the Eastern Yue Sect to find an Array Cultivator.”
Jiang Luoxing was worried but still listened to Yue Wenqiu.
“Are Array Cultivators the ones who set up arrays?” Jiang Luoxing suddenly asked.
“Yes. Array Cultivators are also very important in battle. Their disadvantage is the long reaction time, as they can’t attack quickly, so the main output still comes from Swordsmen.”
“Array Cultivators and Talisman Cultivators are similar. An array is simply the superposition of multiple talisman lines,” Yue Wenqiu explained simply.
