The Host Has Fallen for the Second Female Lead Again - Chapter 68
Ji Mingxiao watched Xi Ruan leave and cleared the table and chairs.
Xi Ruan hadn’t expected things to progress so quickly. There was a development the very next day, but judging by the situation at the gate, it wasn’t a good one.
A large crowd had gathered at the entrance of the immortal abode, led by Immortal Lord Cang Lan.
According to the original storyline, this event shouldn’t have happened. Something unexpected had clearly occurred.
“What should we do?” Xi Ruan looked at Ji Mingxiao, a bad feeling rising in her. “What’s going on? We haven’t even left the house recently.”
She was completely bewildered.
“Is it because of what happened when you went to the Demon Realm last time? But that was so long ago,” Xi Ruan wondered.
“Let’s go out and see,” Ji Mingxiao said. She glanced at Xu Cu, who was standing nearby, her intuition telling her this was likely related to her.
Xu Cu noticed Ji Mingxiao’s gaze and flinched, though it wasn’t very noticeable. She subconsciously looked away, confused. Why was Ji Mingxiao looking at her? Was she suspicious? Why did Ji Mingxiao look at her the moment something went wrong?
“What do you need, Immortal Lord Cang Lan?” Ji Mingxiao opened the door, her expression and tone hostile as she looked at the people gathered outside. “Why have you brought so many people to my home?”
“Your new disciple might have some issues,” Cang Lan said, his tone light as if he foresaw Ji Mingxiao’s impending misfortune.
Ji Mingxiao’s gaze turned cold. “Then tell me, what issues?”
“Xi Ruan is in cahoots with the demon race,” Cang Lan announced. “We need to take her back for investigation and interrogation.”
“Who said that?” Ji Mingxiao narrowed her eyes.
Cang Lan glanced at Xu Cu. “We wouldn’t believe it without a reliable source.”
“Where’s your proof?” Ji Mingxiao sneered. “Xi Ruan’s first fifteen years are traceable, and since I brought her here, she has been within my control. Aside from when she was captured by the demon race, she hasn’t left the abode. You’re telling me she’s colluding with demons? Does that mean I’m a demon too?”
Ji Mingxiao’s face was impassive. “Please provide evidence. What do you mean by a ‘reliable source’? Where is the proof? You can’t just slander someone based on hearsay. If I said you were a demon spy, would you be one? That’s ridiculous.”
“We just want to take Xi Ruan in for questioning, Immortal Lord Wuyin. There’s no need for this,” Cang Lan said, knowing Ji Mingxiao wouldn’t give up her disciple easily but not expecting her to be so aggressive.
Ji Mingxiao scoffed. “You want to take my disciple without evidence? Where is my dignity? Or does the Immortal Realm no longer want me as an Immortal Lord, so you need to do something to spite me?”
“Immortal Lord Wuyin!” Cang Lan’s face changed. “What is the meaning of this?”
“Shouldn’t I be the one asking what you mean? Although I don’t get involved in immortal affairs, I know you can’t seize people without evidence,” Ji Mingxiao’s voice rose a few octaves, radiating an intimidating authority that left the people behind Cang Lan speechless.
Xu Cu looked at Ji Mingxiao, puzzled. She recalled that Immortal Lord Wuyin rarely got angry, but in this short time, Ji Mingxiao had already lost her temper several times because of Xi Ruan.
She couldn’t help but step forward.
“Master,” Xu Cu said, biting her lip. “I saw my junior sister communicating with people from the demon race… she often snuck out at night.”
“When? Where did you meet them? Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t I sense her leaving the immortal abode?” Ji Mingxiao’s gaze was cold as she looked at Xu Cu. “And what about you leaving? I didn’t sense that either.”
Xu Cu’s body went stiff.
“If you can sneak out right under my nose, it should have been easy for them to find you hiding in the dark. Why didn’t they? Tell me! Or are you both saying your cultivation is higher than mine?”
Xu Cu looked at Ji Mingxiao, her mouth agape. She took a step back, her voice trembling slightly. “You’re not my Master… you’re not my Master!”
She didn’t know where this sudden thought came from, but Immortal Lord Wuyin’s drastic change could only be explained this way. She didn’t want to accept any other possibility.
Everyone’s gaze shifted to Ji Mingxiao, and they found a sense of resonance in Xu Cu’s words. The recent “Immortal Lord Wuyin” was indeed too strange.
A sharp warning instantly blared in Ji Mingxiao’s mind. She frowned in displeasure.
“So now you’re suspecting I’ve been possessed? Tell me, who in the Six Realms has the power to possess me?” Ji Mingxiao’s eyes were icy as she looked at Xu Cu. “Do you think I’m a fool who can’t tell right from wrong and will unconditionally believe you regardless of the evidence?”
“Your words are full of holes. Can’t I call you out on it? Should I just let you frame your junior sister?”
Ji Mingxiao raised her hand, and Xu Cu’s legs instantly felt a heavy pressure, forcing her to her knees. She couldn’t even lift her head to get up.
“You’re jealous because I’ve been paying attention to Xi Ruan lately, aren’t you? So you chose to frame your junior sister in this stupid and flawed way.”
The surroundings were silent, and Immortal Lord Cang Lan had nothing to say.
“It is a tragedy to have a disciple like you,” Ji Mingxiao said. She then looked at Cang Lan. “Immortal Lord Cang Lan, your desire to see me humiliated is a little too urgent. You’d believe such a rumor.”
Cang Lan’s face hardened.
“If you insist on taking my disciple by force, I don’t mind having a fight,” Ji Mingxiao said, raising her hand. The sword from her room instantly flew into her grasp.
Immortal Lord Cang Lan instinctively took a step back. There was no way he could win a fight against Ji Mingxiao.
Since when had Immortal Lord Wuyin become so unreasonable?
Xi Ruan had remained silent throughout the entire exchange, feeling it was best to leave this kind of situation to Ji Mingxiao.
She had a sudden feeling that if Cang Lan did anything else, Ji Mingxiao might just take her and defect to the demon race.
Immortal Lord Cang Lan pursed his lips and glanced at Xi Ruan.
The scene became awkward for a moment.
“I was too rash this time. The tension between the Demon Realm and the Immortal Realm is high, and I can’t overlook any potential threats,” Immortal Lord Cang Lan said, cupping his hands in a gesture of apology. It was best to apologize early at a time like this.
“Immortal Lord Cang Lan, you should use your head more often.”
Cang Lan gave Xu Cu a cold look. He couldn’t understand why he had believed Xu Cu so easily. Was there something wrong with this person?
But he didn’t say anything.
“If there’s nothing else, I’m going to close the door.”
As Cang Lan was about to speak, the door slammed shut. He stared at the closed door, taking a deep breath. What kind of person was this?
This person was getting more and more annoying, more and more arrogant.
After closing the door, Ji Mingxiao turned to look at Xu Cu, who was still kneeling on the ground.
Xu Cu’s back was drenched in cold sweat.
“Xu Cu.”
Xu Cu trembled. “Master, your disciple knows she was wrong. She truly knows.”
Ji Mingxiao raised an eyebrow. She thought this person would hold out a bit longer, but she admitted her mistake after only two sentences?
How very pragmatic.
“Senior Sister, why would you do this? I’ve never offended you,” Xi Ruan said, deciding to play the part of an innocent white lotus.
Ji Mingxiao shivered at Xi Ruan’s gentle, sorrowful voice and glanced at her, completely surprised that Xi Ruan had even shed two tears.
Was she a drama queen?
Xu Cu tried to lift her head, but every time she moved, the pressure on her back and legs intensified. Her body was almost pressed to the ground.
“Junior Sister, I’m sorry,” Xu Cu’s voice was strained.
Ji Mingxiao looked at her, narrowing her eyes. To be honest, Ji Mingxiao felt that the timing of her transmigration into this world wasn’t ideal.
Because this person hadn’t actually done anything yet, and if she hadn’t done anything, what was there to regret?
“Honey, your mission is to make the scum male lead a better person. Merely making him feel regret is an incomplete interpretation of the task,” System A said.
Ji Mingxiao: …
System A giggled. “Honey, you can do it! Good luck. Also, it’s a good thing you handled the situation perfectly just now when you were almost found out, or you would’ve been in trouble.”
“Oh,” Ji Mingxiao replied, thinking of the “small dark room” that System A had mentioned. She was actually a little curious to see it.
“Just stay kneeling here. When you’ve truly thought things through, you can get up.”
Xu Cu was stunned, and her voice grew louder. “Master… you used to like me. Why did you suddenly change?”
Ji Mingxiao paused and looked at Xu Cu. “Is that your reason for trying to use me to frame your junior sister?”
“You were trying to lure me step by step, all for my cultivation, weren’t you?” Ji Mingxiao sneered. “Did you really think I didn’t know? I didn’t say anything because I hoped you would figure things out on your own and not continue down the wrong path. So now you think I’m wrong because I didn’t do what you wanted?”
Xu Cu’s face grew paler with each passing moment.
Xi Ruan watched the drama unfold from the side, trying not to laugh.
“Master…”
“So you’ve always been treating me like a fool.” Ji Mingxiao flicked her sleeve and turned to leave.
Xu Cu’s hands slowly clenched into fists.
Xi Ruan followed Ji Mingxiao, looking back at Xu Cu a few times. “You’re really just going to leave her kneeling there?”
“What else?” Ji Mingxiao looked at Xi Ruan. “Are you feeling sorry for her?”
Xi Ruan was confused, as if Ji Mingxiao had said something ridiculous. “Why would I feel sorry for her? Won’t she turn to the dark side? And if she does, won’t that be a lot of trouble?”
“Probably not. It’s only a B-rank world, after all.” Ji Mingxiao tapped the edge of a table. “That foolish system just told me to guide her toward a better path. From the looks of it, this person still has some potential for guidance.”
Xi Ruan looked at Ji Mingxiao. “Guidance… that doesn’t sound like something you’d do.”
“Who knows,” Ji Mingxiao said. She suddenly felt that this B-rank mission was more troublesome than the previous S-rank ones.
