The Host Has Fallen for the Second Female Lead Again - Chapter 23
Su Mian hadn’t been home for three days.
Ji Mingxiao checked the time. In about seven or eight days, Su Mian was supposed to meet her first love, so she needed to do something before they met.
She sat down at the table, waiting for the servants to bring her breakfast.
Ji Mingxiao ate a little and was full. After breakfast, it was Nan Yu’s habit to go for a walk.
But today, it was drizzling outside.
She picked up a clear umbrella and went out.
Drizzle, gentle breeze, clear umbrella, and a matching dress with small white flowers.
Su Mian’s first love, You Shi, was almost exactly this image. She was twenty-five this year and met Su Mian in college, dating from freshman to junior year. Later, because of her family background, the Su family objected, and the two broke up. Su Mian went abroad.
Su Mian had fought back a little, but for the sake of her inheritance, she chose to give up on You Shi.
Nan Yu was twenty-two this year, a graduate student.
Ji Mingxiao didn’t understand why Nan Yu was in such a hurry to get married at just twenty, the legal age for marriage, and without knowing the other person at all.
The other person said she’d be good to her, and she actually believed it.
It made no sense. Although the Nan family wasn’t as good as the Su family, they weren’t that far apart, so there was no urgent need for a marriage alliance.
Ji Mingxiao walked slowly down the street. When she saw Su Mian’s car, she raised her hand and waved, smiling brightly.
System A: …
The car slowly stopped.
“Why are you outside in the rain?” Su Mian rolled down the window.
“Just taking a walk. Want to join me?” Ji Mingxiao looked at her.
Su Mian looked at Nan Yu, thought for a moment, and nodded, getting out of the car.
She didn’t take an umbrella.
“Let me.” Su Mian took the umbrella.
Ji Mingxiao looked ahead, occasionally glancing around, or looking down, or turning her head to smile at Su Mian.
This was all the essence she had learned from watching campus dramas over the years.
“I want to live on campus,” Ji Mingxiao said.
Su Mian frowned. “Why?”
“It’s too much trouble to go back and forth every day,” Ji Mingxiao looked at her with a hint of confusion. “You don’t come home often, anyway.”
“It’s not safe.”
“What’s not safe about it? You lived on campus when you were in college, didn’t you?”
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutely. My university is pretty close to your company. I can come find you for lunch.” Ji Mingxiao tugged on the hem of Su Mian’s coat.
“Okay. When are you moving?”
“Soon.”
The two walked around the neighborhood twice before returning home.
“Are you going out again later?” Ji Mingxiao handed a towel and clothes to Su Mian, standing at the bathroom door.
“No, it’s Saturday.”
“Then let’s watch a movie together later.”
“Okay.”
“Host, what are you doing?” System A looked at Ji Mingxiao, whose style was completely different from the last world, and felt a little scared.
“Maintaining the persona, of course.”
System A: …
“She’s clearly a gentle and generous young lady, but you’re not gentle at all.”
“Isn’t the key point that she’s (silly) and (easy to deceive)? Look, Su Mian thinks so too. She hasn’t even noticed any difference between me and before.”
System A: I actually don’t know how to argue against that.
“In the last world, my persona collapsed so badly, and no one suspected a thing.”
“Host, please don’t be so lucky about the persona. If you’re discovered, the world will collapse, and you’ll be erased. Just a reminder, in this world, you’re with Xi Ruan again, so for her safety, please restrain yourself.”
Ji Mingxiao: …
“Oh.” Ji Mingxiao’s eyes lit up. “We really are fated, aren’t we?”
System A: Okay, successfully grabbed the back of Ji Mingxiao’s fate.
“So where is she?”
“Do you think I’d tell you?”
When Su Mian came out, she saw Ji Mingxiao sitting on the edge of the bed, her body looking frail. The other person smiled at her, and a hint of a trance appeared in Su Mian’s eyes. This small change didn’t escape Ji Mingxiao’s notice.
Ji Mingxiao had already picked out a lot of movies, either horror-thrillers or romance films, all suitable for couples to watch.
Nan Yu rarely watched movies with Su Mian. They usually did their own things at home.
There was a small screening room at home, and Ji Mingxiao brought some fruit in.
Su Mian had already picked one out of the movies Ji Mingxiao had selected.
It was a horror film.
“Are you scared?” Su Mian handed over the tablet.
“Aren’t you here? If I get scared, will you cover my eyes?” Ji Mingxiao listened to her own voice and felt a little sick.
Su Mian, however, took it well. “Okay. If you’re scared, hide in my arms.”
System A: …
The movie was a classic American horror film, “House of Wax.”
Ji Mingxiao wasn’t scared, but the system in her mind kept startling her, making her jump as well.
She opened the store and spent a fortune to buy a low-level stand-in card. The card cost 500 points and could be used three times, each lasting for two hours. Under normal circumstances, it was used in life-threatening situations.
It was the first time the system had seen a stand-in card used because the user didn’t want to have intimate contact with the mission target.
The stand-in card was now active. When the “body” scurried into Su Mian’s embrace and was held, Ji Mingxiao felt as if she was still sitting in her original spot, but she could see Su Mian holding Nan Yu.
“This thing is pretty good,” Ji Mingxiao mused in her mind, then shrieked in a high-pitched voice. The sound didn’t come from her own mouth but from the body’s.
To be honest, it was a little creepy.
Ji Mingxiao smiled unkindly, instructing the stand-in to shiver and act like a small bird clinging to Su Mian’s chest.
Su Mian was clearly receptive to this. Ji Mingxiao noticed that her eyes had changed.
“It’s all fake, don’t be scared.”
“I’ll never dare to go to a wax museum again,” the stand-in whimpered softly, its eyes a little red, as it nestled in Su Mian’s arms.
In reality: …
Ji Mingxiao over here was performing without props, crying in Su Mian’s arms, but in reality, she was just barely holding back laughter.
Su Mian patted the stand-in’s back, comforting it softly, and kissed its forehead.
Ji Mingxiao shivered twice. It was a good thing she felt nothing.
The stand-in card was truly a great thing.
After the movie ended, the stand-in card’s effect also wore off at just the right time.
Probably because of the recent intimate contact, Su Mian’s attitude toward Ji Mingxiao was noticeably much gentler.
During lunch, Su Mian even added some dishes to her plate, something the old Su Mian would never have done.
The observing housekeeper next to them smiled with satisfaction.
The meal was very harmonious.
It was just a shame that the dishes at the Su family’s house didn’t suit Ji Mingxiao’s taste.
She liked spicy food, but the Su family’s food was mostly light.
“Don’t you like it?”
“I want to eat something spicy,” Ji Mingxiao swayed her legs.
“Should I ask the auntie to make two more dishes?” Su Mian looked at Ji Mingxiao.
The auntie next to her was a little surprised. “Why do you suddenly want to eat spicy food? Your taste used to be quite light.”
“I don’t know, I just suddenly want it. I’m craving it a bit. Last time, I had a bowl of sour and spicy noodles at school, and it was so good,” Ji Mingxiao said. “But you don’t have to make it now. Just add two spicy dishes tonight.”
“Why are you eating sour and spicy noodles? Those things aren’t clean.”
“It’s fine to eat it once in a while. I was just craving it,” Ji Mingxiao smiled, a little embarrassed.
“The young lady is still young. It’s normal for her to like those things.”
Su Mian looked at Ji Mingxiao. “Eat less of it.”
“Okay,” Ji Mingxiao lowered her head and ate a few more bites of rice.
“Tell the auntie what you want to eat when you get back, and she can make it.”
“It’s not fun eating alone. It’s not about the sour and spicy noodles, it’s about the atmosphere of being with someone else,” Ji Mingxiao said.
Su Mian looked at the lowered head of Ji Mingxiao and thought for a few seconds. “Okay, I’ll try my best to have dinner with you on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. You’ll be back on the weekends, right?”
“Probably, but I’ll have to see,” Ji Mingxiao nodded, giving Su Mian her sweet smile.
System A: …
Suddenly, I feel like I need to wash my eyes.
After lunch, according to Nan Yu’s habits, Ji Mingxiao also took a nap.
Su Mian went to handle work, waiting for Ji Mingxiao to wake up for afternoon tea together.
It was a truly boring and uninteresting life.
Especially when Ji Mingxiao finished afternoon tea and started looking at Nan Yu’s graduate courses.
She was studying chemistry, organic chemistry.
Ji Mingxiao knew nothing about it.
“Why did you arrange this major for her? Couldn’t it have been something simpler?”
Although she had the system’s help and was given all of Nan Yu’s knowledge, she still had to practice it herself.
Ji Mingxiao felt deeply that if she went through a few more worlds, she could become an all-around person.
Today was another day of loving to learn.
Although she had the knowledge base, to understand it better, Ji Mingxiao still went through Nan Yu’s old notes and picked out some online classes. Her Saturday and Sunday were basically spent on this.
Nan Yu was a proper genius student. She couldn’t fall behind.
“Why are you still here?” Su Mian opened the door and saw Ji Mingxiao. “And with just one desk lamp on.”
Ji Mingxiao rubbed her eyes, looked up, and smiled. “I feel like it’s easier to concentrate this way.”
“Go to bed. It’s already past midnight. Don’t you have to go to school at 7 a.m. tomorrow?”
“Okay,” Ji Mingxiao yawned, nodded, and followed Su Mian back to the room.
Su Mian did nothing, which made Ji Mingxiao breathe a sigh of relief.
But it was still uncomfortable to share a bed, so System A watched as Ji Mingxiao used a sleep card.
She had used up a thousand points in two days, all for minor, insignificant things.
