- Chapter 37 - My First Spouse Cannot Be You
Having understood the situation, Yolai’s gaze gradually became firm as he looked at his only A-rank cub.
“Did you not marry Asher despite hating him?”
Why was that? The few insects present all understood the answer clearly in their hearts.
“Spend more time with Quinn; you will discover the side of him that you like.”
Admiral Derek had been with Duke Yolai for over twenty years and knew him well. The Duke was clearly very fond of Quinn; if Cen Li continued to reject him and slighted Duke Yolai’s face, it would likely provoke his displeasure.
Derek played the mediator, saying, “Cen Li does not know enough about Quinn yet. Once they become familiar with each other, his thoughts might change.”
“Let the two of them stay alone for a while.”
Before leaving, Admiral Derek patted Cen Li on the back, signaling for him to get along well with Quinn.
“Lord, did I offend you at some point, causing you to have some misunderstanding about me?”
At this moment, the perfect, calculated smile was gone from Quinn’s face. He was now filled with genuine confusion. As an aristocratic female insect, his behavior could be described as humble and submissive, yet Cen Li still refused to give him any face. Quinn could not help but wonder exactly where things had gone wrong.
“You are too fake.”
From the moment Cen Li met Quinn, that unchanging smile had been plastered on the insect’s face. The upward curve of his lips seemed strictly trained and perfectly measured. It gave Cen Li a sense of detachment. Now that the smile had faded, Quinn’s lips were pressed into a straight line, making him look not quite so approachable.
Cen Li’s words clearly stunned Quinn. His gaze lingered on Cen Li for a long time. He could not help but seriously size up this legendary Lord Male, who had reportedly transformed from disfigured to peerless overnight.
This male was not as arrogant or brainless as others had claimed. Quinn suddenly chuckled. The smile on his face now was different from his previous flawless ones. “Lord, you are truly interesting.”
Cen Li looked at the female who had suddenly started laughing and found it inexplicable. “In any case, I advise you not to have any designs on me. My First Spouse cannot be you.”
The other party could not have been so struck by my repeated rejections that his mind is wandering, right? A flicker of hesitation crossed Cen Li’s eyes, but he decided not to give the other party any false sense of hope.
Quinn smiled. “How can you reach a conclusion so early, Lord? We only just met yesterday. As the Admiral said, we are currently in the stage of getting to know each other.”
Seeing Cen Li staring at him with a deepening frown, Quinn could not resist letting out another smile, his green eyes narrowing with pleasure. He was becoming more and more interested in Cen Li.
“If you accept me as your First Spouse, I will offer up half of the Worth family’s assets. As you know, our family’s wealth is second to none in the Empire. Dozens of planets under our name are developing rare energy sources, and the returns are very substantial.”
Quinn raised his chin slightly, confidently throwing out this massive bait. He did not believe a male could remain indifferent after hearing this.
To his surprise, Cen Li shook his head. Quinn spoke again, unwilling to give up. “When the time comes, our two families will form a powerful alliance. We will certainly grow even stronger and maintain a place in the Empire even a hundred years from now.”
Cen Li had not been in the insect race for even three months. He had little sense of belonging to the Berkeville family, and he had no interest in expanding the family’s power.
“That does not tempt me.”
The expression on Cen Li’s face did not even flicker. Quinn felt increasingly disappointed, but it sparked even more curiosity about Cen Li. Was there really a male who looked down on such vast wealth? Even if Cen Li was born into nobility and had countless assets, who would complain about having too much money?
Aren’t males usually greedy and brainless?
If it were any other insect, after throwing out so many temptations, they would have been eager to make promises. Some might have even submitted an application to the Empire to marry a First Spouse the very next second, fearing he might run away. After all, while a male can only have one First Spouse, with limitless money and status, they could marry more concubines and keep more slaves.
“You are truly different from other males.”
Quinn’s gaze remained focused on Cen Li. Cen Li looked at the insect before him, who seemed to grow more courageous with every setback, failing to understand. He did not know where the sudden interest came from; he had clearly been cold from start to finish, never giving the other party a shred of false hope.
“Even if you do not marry me, more females will throw themselves at you in the future.”
“You are like a dusty gem that has been discovered by the masses at this moment. You are followed by their fanatical gazes, shining with a dazzling light that cannot be ignored.”
The female began his aria of praise again, his soulful green eyes fixed on Cen Li. It made Cen Li’s lip twitch.
“I have no intention of marrying for the time being.”
Quinn was not at all surprised by this answer. He could see it now; the male’s total rejection was likely just to get rid of his persistence.
“But you have already been voted as one of the males the Empire’s females most want to marry. In the future, there will definitely be no shortage of females pursuing you.”
What voting?
In response to his doubt, Quinn handed his terminal to Cen Li. It was connected to the Star Network, displaying yesterday’s poll results. Cen Li’s name was high on the list, currently in second place. The top spot belonged to a male named Chloe, who had a cute appearance and a wide smile that made anyone looking at him smile back. It was said that this male had a good personality and was deeply loved by the Empire’s females.
Cen Li had heard this male’s name more than once; it seemed the other party was truly a celebrity level insect in the Empire. Their vote counts were far ahead of the third place.
“Look! You are so popular. Just a single photo easily captured the hearts of the females.”
Quinn praised him, his eyes crinkling with smiles. The gap between Cen Li and Chloe’s votes was not large; there was even a subtle trend of him overtaking the leader. Yesterday’s banquet had seen an insect take a photo of Cen Li and post it on the Star Network. Unexpectedly, it received tens of thousands of likes within just a few minutes.
The photo was clearly a candid shot. The male, surrounded by a crowd, was tall with long legs. He had his eyes lowered, his gaze locked on the insect speaking to him, his thin lips slightly pursed in a faint show of impatience. His short silver hair glinted coldly, echoing his blue eyes, which added to his distant and indifferent aura.
The females were pounding on their keyboards, leaving excited comments.
“Is this the disfigured and crippled male from the Berkeville family? He is a completely different person now.”
“OP, you are my god! To think you could attend this kind of banquet. The Duke only invites people with status in the Empire.”
“I am so jealous! The OP could actually see such a handsome Lord with their own eyes.”
“Regret not seeing him in person +1.”
“+1.”
“+1.”
“+10086.”
The comments here were still normal, but as he scrolled down, the surface level text could no longer contain the excitement of these females. They became increasingly bold.
“That gaze literally kills me. I am so hard.”
