- Chapter 3 - Signs of an Impending Rut
“What are you wandering around for?”
The dorm room was pitch black, without a single glimmer of light. Song Yu was pinned against the door by the other person, only able to feel that the body temperature of the man in front of him was alarmingly high.
“I warned you not to come back to the dorm tonight.” The other’s voice was hoarse, as if each word was being squeezed out from his throat.
Song Yu nervously swallowed. Was this school bully really that weak? Could he have gotten sick just from being splashed with a little cold water today?!
“R-really? Hey, young master, are you okay?”
He lifted his free hand and gave the person pressing against him a slight push.
“Don’t move.” Lu Qiwen frowned, wanting to release the hand gripping Song Yu, yet the other’s body temperature inexplicably made him unable, and unwilling, to pull away.
Song Yu might not have many virtues, but in this regard, he was exceptionally obedient. The hand he had raised instantly froze, resting obediently against Lu Qiwen’s chest.
The distance between them was uncomfortably close; Song Yu could even feel the heat of Lu Qiwen’s breath.
“Are you really okay?” His face scrunched up in concern.
“Are you sure you don’t need some medicine?”
“With this temperature, you might burn yourself into an idiot…”
Lu Qiwen: ?
“What did you say?”
Song Yu: !
Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit! I thought it, but why did I actually say it out loud?!
He abruptly shut his mouth and forced out a few awkward laughs. “No, no, nothing! If you need anything, I’ll run to the campus clinic right now to get medicine!”
Lu Qiwen sneered coldly, forcibly releasing his grip on Song Yu’s wrist and gritting his teeth as he said, “Thank you for your concern.”
“As an alpha, there’s no illness that can bring me down.”
“And I certainly won’t burn myself into an idiot.”
Even someone as thick-skinned as Song Yu could tell from that last sentence that the other was angry.
Song Yu guiltily lowered his head, his big eyes darting around nervously.
He really heard it. Could it be that this sidekick mission is doomed before it even begins?
He let out a few more awkward laughs. “You’re in great health, haha.”
Lu Qiwen’s face darkened, and he couldn’t help grinding his back teeth. “Move aside.”
Song Yu was taken aback. “Huh?”
“Move, move aside for what?”
“If you don’t move aside, I’m afraid I might beat you to death in the dorm tonight while you’re asleep.” Lu Qiwen sneered.
“After you.” Song Yu moved with lightning speed, instantly darting away.
Watching Lu Qiwen’s retreating figure gradually disappear, Song Yu couldn’t help but marvel.
Alphas in this ABO world are so incredible. His body temperature must be close to 39°C, yet he walks as steadily as if he were at a normal temperature.
[Ding, system reminder: This is a sign that an alpha is about to enter their rut.]
Rut?
Song Yu paused. He had seen this setting in the original novel, wasn’t it just like having a period?
With that thought, his mind instantly calmed. He even felt a bit sorry for alphas. Betas are better, carefree and relaxed.
Meanwhile, the system stared at the report showing the dorm’s pheromone concentration at 90%, feeling puzzled.
In the original story, did the school bully experience pheromone imbalance and enter his rut at this plot point?
Its highly precise computational brain ran countless calculations but couldn’t reach a conclusion. In the end, it slipped back into a dormant state.
At exactly seven o’clock the next day, Song Yu, who had been buried under the covers with only his fluffy head peeking out, nuzzled against the blanket and blinked his eyes open into a narrow slit.
“Hmm, that’s strange. Why do I feel like I slept especially deeply and comfortably last night?”
He turned his head and saw Lu Qiwen’s bed, which showed no signs of having been slept in, and was utterly shocked.
“So he really didn’t come back all night.”
“Whatever, he’s the young master of the Lu family. He must have somewhere to stay.”
He climbed out of bed, slipped on his slippers, and for some reason, smiled with a mouthful of toothpaste foam.
Surely he didn’t go out and play games all night without sleeping, right?
In a private booth at an internet café near University B, Lu Qiwen, with dark circles under his eyes, impatiently opened a box and popped a few mint candies into his mouth.
For some reason, the games that usually distracted him were completely useless at the moment.
He stared at the flickering computer screen, but his mind couldn’t help but recall the warmth of the wrist he had held the night before.
Suddenly, the door to the booth was pushed open.
“Seriously, buddy, how did you end up in such a sorry state?”
Lu Qiwen didn’t take his eyes off the screen and replied coldly, “If your eyes are bothering you, go get them checked. I’ll cover the bill if you’re broke.”
Jiang Yuanheng, who heard this, wasn’t angry but instead raised an eyebrow. “I flew back to the country last night, and you didn’t even come to pick me up.”
“Can’t you at least treat me like your older brother?”
“Get lost,” Lu Qiwen bit down hard, crushing all the mint candies in his mouth. He swiveled his chair around, lazily stretching his long legs to either side. “You’re only half a month older than me, and you have the nerve to say that. I haven’t slept in two days.”
“Forget picking you up, I’ve almost forgotten what it feels like to sleep.”
“Half a month is still older,” Jiang Yuanheng clicked his tongue, his gaze sweeping around the room. “But you actually came to a place like this to pull an all-nighter? That doesn’t seem like you.”
“Usually, when I ask you to hang out, you complain about everything.”
Lu Qiwen leaned back in his chair, his eyes vacant. “I own this place.”
“When did you open this behind my back?”
“Yesterday.”
Standing nearby, Lu Zhi was dressed neatly in black trousers and a white shirt. A simple pair of thin black-framed glasses gave him an exceptionally clean and crisp appearance.
When he heard Lu Qiwen’s words, he lowered his head slightly, a smug and delighted smile spreading across his face.
All of this would eventually become his.
Lu Qiwen’s gaze drifted over Lu Zhi before he scoffed and stood up. “Alright, I’m heading back to catch up on sleep.”
“If you want to play, pick a room for yourself.”
But Lu Zhi suddenly spoke up. “Cousin, Uncle said you haven’t been home much lately. He and Aunt are really upset.”
Lu Qiwen paused mid-step, his expression full of disdain. “Jiang Yuanheng, if you bring random people to see me again, I’ll kick you out.”
Hearing this, Lu Zhi’s hands, hanging at his sides, clenched silently, a certain glint flashing deep in his dark eyes.
…
Finally, after enduring the entrance ceremony, Song Yu hurriedly made his way off campus.
“Hello,” he said, slightly nervous as he walked into the shop. “I heard you’re looking for part-time help here?”
System: “…”
[Host]
Before the system could finish, Song Yu interrupted urgently in his mind.
[I know, I know, I’m breaking character, right? But a person needs food to survive. The original host’s adoptive parents didn’t give him a single cent beyond tuition.]
[How am I supposed to complete the mission if I starve to death?!]
The system’s brain went into a state of confusion for a moment.
[That… actually makes sense.]
[Right? Besides, the original character really is a vain young master type. He’d secretly take on part-time jobs to maintain that persona anyway. Just find one that won’t get discovered.]
The system fell silent for a moment, then quietly glanced at the shop’s name.
[Fragrant Nights]
The system nearly burned out its CPU trying to come up with a counterargument but couldn’t find one.
[This really… isn’t likely to be discovered.]
“You really are looking for a part-time job?” The woman behind the counter, with her long, wavy hair, gave Song Yu a thorough once-over from head to toe, finally settling her gaze on his face. “Are you sure you’re an adult?”
Hearing the skepticism in her voice, Song Yu stiffened for a moment before slapping his ID card onto the table.
“Not to brag, but I’m already 19.”
The woman picked up the ID card and examined it for a while before looking up, her face full of doubt. “Are you sure you can handle it?”
Song Yu didn’t even blush. “I can learn.”
Since it was his first day, Song Yu spent the time shadowing the woman, Sister Zheng, and helping out. It wasn’t until dark that Sister Zheng finally let him go.
Exhausted, Song Yu carried the snacks he’d bought from the food street back to the dorm. But as soon as he opened the door, he unexpectedly saw Lu Qiwen.
The man in front of him had damp, tousled hair clinging to his forehead and temples. Glittering droplets of water trailed from the tips of his hair down his neck and into the hollow of his collarbone.
A hazy mist of steam lingered around him. He wore nothing on his upper body, only a loosely tied towel around his waist. His chest muscles, abs, and the lines of his obliques were all on full display.
Lu Qiwen paused in the middle of drying his hair and lifted his gaze, meeting Song Yu’s eyes directly.
