- The Ghost Insists on Giving Me a Beautiful and Powerful Wife!
- Chapter 29.1 - Did They Know Each Other a Long Time Ago?
Zhuang Ciyue had been to Ghost Market before. Without a bone pen, she could easily find the location of some fixed shops.
They quickly found the Purple Phoenix Hall.
There were two lanterns hanging in front of the Purple Phoenix Hall as well, but the colors were not consistent; one was white and one was red.
The two colors intertwined strangely, creating an unexpected harmony.
Seeing Yu Ruoyin staring at the lanterns, hesitating to enter the shop, Zhuang Ciyue immediately guessed what she was thinking. She explained to Yu Ruoyin, “One red and one white signifies that the shopkeeper is half-human, half-demon.”
“So that’s how it is.”
After resolving the doubt in her heart, Yu Ruoyin took hold of Nanhe’s sleeve and followed Zhuang Ciyue into the Purple Phoenix Hall.
The light in the Purple Phoenix Hall was very dim, making it almost impossible to see the displays inside.
Unlike the bright lighting of the Non-Phase Pavilion, there was only a dim oil lamp. The weak spark could be extinguished with a gentle puff. The air was filled with a damp, musty smell, as if it had been neglected for a long time, completely unlike what a shop should be like.
Creak, creak—
The sound of a wooden chair rocking echoed in the darkness, and Yu Ruoyin’s heart tightened.
She mustered up her courage but couldn’t take a single step forward; instead, she took a step backward.
Nanhe sensed her timidity and suddenly tugged at her hand, leading her toward the source of the sound.
Nanhe walked very quickly, even pulling her past Zhuang Ciyue. Zhuang Ciyue hadn’t expected Nanhe to be so reckless. She stamped her foot anxiously, “Hey, you!”
She wanted to catch up with Nanhe, but Nanhe had already pulled Yu Ruoyin to the oil lamp.
Yu Ruoyin was breathing nervously, her eyes scanning the overly dim shop. Suddenly, next to the oil lamp, she saw a hand with a greyish-green tint. The hand was skeletal, even drier than a broken-off dead branch. The skin was starting to crack, and the fingertips were tinged with black and blue.
Yu Ruoyin’s eyes widened in horror. In a panic, she struggled out of Nanhe’s grip, covered her mouth, and backed up several steps to keep herself from screaming.
Her fear elicited a mocking laugh from the shop, “Why is someone who associates with the yin so timid?”
The voice came from behind her, which made Yu Ruoyin even more frightened. She turned her head and only saw a pair of grey-brown eyes.
The unusual color made her heart pound fiercely.
She changed direction and continued to retreat.
Nanhe supported her, making her stand straight, “Don’t be afraid, she’s not bad.”
“A Spirit, huh.”
The woman’s voice trailed upwards. A sudden gust of wind blew past, and dozens of oil lamps lit up simultaneously, brightening the whole shop. Yu Ruoyin also got a clear look at the person who had just scared her. It was a woman around thirty, wearing a dark robe with long, loose hair, looking lazy and casual.
She leaned back in the rocking chair, her entire body curled up, swaying slowly.
Her face looked decent but lacked spirit.
With drooping eyelids, she looked like she could fall asleep at any moment.
She was too lazy to even look up at Yu Ruoyin. Tucking her long robe around her, her weary brows were full of impatience, “I don’t feel like doing business today. Come back another time.”
“Hey, Senior!” Zhuang Ciyue was dissatisfied. She rushed up to the shopkeeper but didn’t dare to get angry.
In a place like the Ghost Market, anyone who could occupy a fixed shop for a long time was not a simple person. She was well aware of her own capabilities and would never dare to cause trouble casually.
Yu Ruoyin felt uncomfortable just standing there.
When the woman told her to leave, a sense of fear immediately arose in her heart, “O-okay… I’ll come back next time.”
Her subservient look made the woman sneer, “You don’t look much like someone who associates with the yin; you look like a coward. Don’t come back in the future.”
“If you don’t want to do business, then don’t do business. Why are you cursing people!”
Zhuang Ciyue defended Yu Ruoyin, but the woman pushed her away, “So noisy.”
She used force when pushing Zhuang Ciyue, causing Zhuang Ciyue to fall backward uncontrollably.
Yu Ruoyin quickly reached out to support her, only to feel that Zhuang Ciyue was surprisingly heavy, pulling her whole body downward.
The red jade fruit on her neck flashed, and Yu Ruoyin’s arms suddenly gained strength, which allowed her to successfully help Zhuang Ciyue stand up.
The lit-up red jade fruit sparked the lazy woman’s interest.
She sat up, staring intently at the red jade fruit on Yu Ruoyin’s neck, “Jiang Huaining.”
The woman seemed to recognize Jiang Huaining’s spiritual energy. She grabbed Yu Ruoyin’s wrist, “Who are you? From the Four Spirits Shop?”
The ghost token of the red jade fruit that Yu Ruoyin hadn’t managed to put away slipped out of her sleeve. The woman reached out and caught the token, then paused, “It really is from the Four Spirits Shop. Do you also need to do business with me? Isn’t Jiang Huaining omnipotent?”
She seemed to know Jiang Huaining.
The woman didn’t give her a chance to ask further. She tossed the ghost token back into Yu Ruoyin’s hand, “Tell me, what do you want?”
“I heard that you… you can find memories here.” Yu Ruoyin took two deep breaths and clenched her hands tightly, finally gathering some courage to push Nanhe forward, “We want to help her find her memories.”
The woman glanced at her, “What can you pay?”
Yu Ruoyin intended to hand over the ghost token, but the woman didn’t accept it.
She scrutinized Yu Ruoyin, her sharp gaze seemingly trying to pierce through the black robe to see her true self, “I don’t want any of these. I want a promise from you.”
“What?”
“You must promise that the Four Spirits Shop will take my business.”
“Huh?” Yu Ruoyin was very surprised. She held the ghost token and stabilized herself, “I… I don’t have the authority to do that.”
“The Four Spirits Shop’s ghost token is in your hand, how can you not have that authority!” The woman’s laziness instantly turned into agitation. She pounced on Yu Ruoyin like a lunatic, shaking Yu Ruoyin’s shoulders vigorously, “Help me, please help me!”
Nanhe rescued Yu Ruoyin from the woman’s grasp, shielding her and Zhuang Ciyue behind her, “You…”
She didn’t know what to say, but Zhuang Ciyue did. She peeked out from behind Nanhe, “You should go beg Boss Jiang, she’s the owner of the Four Spirits Shop.”
“I went to the Four Spirits Shop to beg, but Jiang Huaining refused me.” The woman lowered her head dejectedly, her expression low, “She refused me without even naming a price. She shouldn’t have treated me this way, she shouldn’t have!”
If Jiang Huaining had refused, then it couldn’t be agreed to.
Yu Ruoyin was more resolute than ever. She gathered her courage and stepped out from behind Nanhe, “The Four Spirits Shop only does business with those who are destined. It seems you are not destined to be with the Four Spirits Shop. I can’t…”
Yu Ruoyin couldn’t finish her sentence. The woman’s eyes suddenly turned peach-colored.
The vibrant color blurred Yu Ruoyin’s vision, and her consciousness gradually became fuzzy. She heard the woman’s voice, “My name is Lian Zhen. You are willing to do business with Lian Zhen, right?”
“Willing.”
A promise drifted from her throat. A fox-like mark suddenly appeared on Yu Ruoyin’s wrist.
Yu Ruoyin’s consciousness gradually returned. She looked at the new fox mark, feeling at a loss. Zhuang Ciyue screamed uncontrollably, “You cheated!”
There was nothing Yu Ruoyin didn’t understand.
She had just been controlled by this woman named Lian Zhen, and now the contract was sealed, with no room for regret.
No wonder Zhuang Ciyue’s temper was getting worse; there were too many unexpected dirty tricks in this line of work.
Frustration and remorse welled up in her chest. She reached out and scratched hard at the fox mark, her nails breaking the skin, leaving fine bloody scratches. Zhuang Ciyue was stunned and quickly grabbed her hand, “What are you doing!”
Yu Ruoyin pushed away Zhuang Ciyue’s hand and continued to scratch the fox mark.
Nanhe stopped her, gripping her hand tightly, “N-no… you can’t.”
Zhuang Ciyue breathed a sigh of relief and gently patted Yu Ruoyin’s shoulder, “What are you doing? It’s just one transaction. Boss Jiang definitely won’t blame you. You…”
Before she could finish her comforting words, she suddenly heard continuous sobbing.
Zhuang Ciyue froze in place. While feeling helpless, she heard Yu Ruoyin’s resentful voice, “I know, I know she won’t blame me. That’s why I’m angry. Angry at myself for being so useless, why I keep dragging her down, why I keep causing trouble, why I’m so utterly useless, I…”
She had bottled up too many emotions. Suppressed for too long, even a small incident could break her.
Yu Ruoyin was suddenly dragged into a strange world, and before she could adapt, she experienced too many bloody scenes and even life-and-death separations.
She should have broken down long ago. It was only with Jiang Huaining’s comfort that she managed to hold on. Now that Jiang Huaining wasn’t around, she instantly fell into a cycle of self-blame, blaming herself for being useless, for being a burden, and for allowing others to control her so easily.
It was no wonder Lu Qingzhen worried about her being a burden to Jiang Huaining; she was indeed a burden.
Yu Ruoyin couldn’t understand why someone as useless as her appeared next to Jiang Huaining, and she even more couldn’t understand why a person like Jiang Huaining would have a special affection for a coward.
Zhuang Ciyue was anxious to hear her cry.
She couldn’t help but blame Nanhe, who had the ability to protect Yu Ruoyin but did nothing: “Why didn’t you stop her?”
“She… her heart is crying, she needs…”
Nanhe’s words were interrupted by Zhuang Ciyue: “Her heart is crying, and my heart is about to cry! We came here to help you. Don’t you feel any responsibility towards us? Her heart is just crying, but someone here has already broken down, can’t you see that?”
Zhuang Ciyue also knew she shouldn’t argue with a confused spirit, but she was truly furious right now.
If only she still had her bone pen, she would fight with her life to poke a few holes in this hateful woman to vent her anger.
Zhuang Ciyue glared fiercely at the woman, hardened her heart, and bit her fingertip: “I’ve decided, I’m going to fight you!”
