- Chapter 38 - Qi Ran Has a Fever and Stomach Ache
“How could I ever be disgusted by my wife? My Ranran is the cutest little angel baby in the whole world,” Gu Han said, pulling Qi Ran into his arms. “Wife, how about I go make some food? Let me guess, does my little baby like a savory chicken soup base?”
Qi Ran nodded: “Yes, Hubby.”
“Then I’ll get it ready,” Gu Han kissed Qi Ran’s lips. “I’m going to cook a lot of your favorite dishes today. However, I only know you like boneless fish, big shrimp, and scallops, and for vegetables, I only know you like potatoes. Can you tell me what else you particularly love to eat?”
As Qi Ran was thinking, Gu Han took his hand: “Come on, baby, I’ll take you to the cold storage to pick. You can have whatever you like.”
Compared to last night, Qi Ran was much more cheerful. Wearing his bear pajamas, he skipped along beside Gu Han. Gu Han loved seeing Qi Ran so lively and held him protectively in his arms: “Is Ranran’s stomach feeling better? Are you starting to get your energy back?”
“Much better, Hubby,” Qi Ran gave a little hop and was caught in Gu Han’s embrace. He hugged Gu Han’s shoulders, kissed his cheek, and said, “Thank you for taking such good care of me, Hubby. My stomach doesn’t really hurt anymore.”
“My little Ranran is so lively and cute,” Gu Han carried Qi Ran to the cold storage and swiped his fingerprint to open the door. “Pick whatever you want, baby. Once you’re done, I’ll call Yu Shen over to see what he wants.”
Qi Ran liked fish and shrimp, beef, and green vegetables. He chose bean sprouts, sweet potato leaves, Romaine lettuce, cabbage, and garland chrysanthemum, simple, everyday greens. When Yu Shen came over to look, he said those were fine for him too, vegetables could be boiled simply, as he was mainly interested in meat this time.
“If you want meat, that’s easy,” Gu Han smiled while holding Qi Ran. “It’s rare for General Manager Yu to make a request of me. There will definitely be enough meat. The fridge is almost full, we’ll bring it all out for the hotpot this time.”
Yu Shen mentioned he really wanted to play games for a while today and would help Gu Han next time. Gu Han waved him off: “No need. You’ve been too tired lately. If you want to play games, go ahead. Take advantage of the typhoon day to relax since we aren’t working. Does the kitchen work require a guest’s help?”
Qi Ran chimed in: “Then, Hubby, I’ll help you.”
“How could I let my wife do housework? I promised Ranran from the start that I would handle the work alone.”
Gu Han took Qi Ran’s snow-white, slender hand and pressed it to his lips: “Ranran has such fair, tender hands. They’re beautiful. My wife’s hands must stay this tender for a lifetime. I’ll do all the chores.”
Yu Shen asked with a smile, “Gu Han, you really are a dark horse. Who knew you were so good at pampering a wife? Those of us who have worked with you for years have never seen this side of you.”
“That’s right,” Gu Han laughed too, but unlike Yu Shen’s polite smile, Gu Han turned shy, his face flushing. “Before, I didn’t even dare to dream I’d have a wife. I had completely given up hope on relationships. That’s why I always say Qi Ran is my little angel, it’s really no exaggeration.”
By the time they finished picking the food, it was already 4:30 PM, only half an hour away from dinner time. Yu Shen went upstairs to play games, and Qi Ran moved a chair even closer to Gu Han this time, sitting right inside the kitchen nearly glued to Gu Han’s side.
“Does Ranran want to sit here?”
As Gu Han peeled shrimp shells, he spoke softly to Qi Ran: “Little Cat wife, even for a little kitty baby, don’t you find the smell of fish and meat here too fishy?”
“It’s not fishy,” Qi Ran lowered his head, rubbing his crown against Gu Han’s waist. “I don’t smell anything.”
“Ranran little baby, you are just too cute,” Gu Han’s hands were dirty, so he couldn’t touch Qi Ran. He coaxed him, saying, “Baby, once Hubby finishes prepping the meat, I’ll come play with you, okay?”
“Okay,” Qi Ran hugged Gu Han’s waist, tilted his head up, and kissed Gu Han’s arm. “Oh right, is Hubby going to write documents today?”
“Likely so,” Gu Han said. “I’ll discuss it with Yu Shen in a bit.”
Qi Ran asked tentatively: “If Hubby goes to work, can you take me with you?”
“Of course, baby,” Gu Han turned around, showing off his muscular arms to Qi Ran. “Wife, look at my arms, lots of muscle. I’m strong enough to hold you in my arms while you sleep all night. If you find the documents boring, just sleep in my embrace. When work is over, I’ll carry you back to the bedroom.”
Having coaxed Qi Ran, Gu Han continued preparing the hotpot ingredients. The little dog came trot-trotting into the kitchen to see what smelled so good, and was immediately scooped up by Qi Ran: “Hamburger, what did Daddy teach you? You can’t come into the kitchen. Uncle Yu Shen is coming to dinner; do you want everyone to eat food covered in dog hair? Out you go.”
“Ranran, go play with the dog for a while,” Gu Han looked dotingly at Qi Ran holding the dog. “Actually, the dog misses you and loves you very much. While you were asleep, I heard him go upstairs several times. Maybe he thought you weren’t awake yet, so he didn’t touch the door. He really loves and worries about you. Every time he leaves you, he watches you for a long, long time. Maybe he’s making trouble on purpose just to spend more time with you.”
“Really, Hubby?” Qi Ran stroked the dog’s wrinkled brow. “I thought the dog was silly and only knew about eating and sleeping. I thought he only missed me when he was hungry.”
After answering Gu Han, Qi Ran’s finger lightly tapped the dog’s wet nose, asking softly: “Silly Hamburger, do you only think of me when your tummy is empty? Tell Daddy, is that it?”
This time, the dog didn’t perform his usual “spin and lie down” move. He pitter-pattered his paws urgently, whimpering and huffing through his nose in protest to Qi Ran.
“It seems Daddy really misunderstood you.”
Qi Ran stood up, then squatted down again, pulling the dog completely into his arms. His slender fingers rubbed the dog’s head: “Is silly Hamburger the one who loves me most? More than Daddy Gu Han and Uncle Yu Shen?”
The dog tilted its head listening to Qi Ran. Once he finished, the dog suddenly broke free from his arms, excitedly spun two circles, and as he lay down in front of Qi Ran, his tail wagged frantically.
In that moment, Qi Ran seemed to fully understand why the dog was so happy. The dog’s meaning was: Daddy, do you finally understand Hamburger’s heart? Hehe.
“Ranran, dogs aren’t much different from people. Having food to eat, money to spend, and being able to sleep well is just called a ‘high-quality life.’ Money gives people more choices and comfort. I think that’s the first life ideal most people think of,” Gu Han said. “But if you want to feel that life has been worth it from birth to adulthood that you haven’t come to this world in vain, you need to be deeply loved. And being loved? The conditions for that are quite strict.”
“Hubby, where did you get all these great life philosophies?” Listening to Gu Han made Qi Ran want to cry, but he didn’t want to be constantly weeping and making Gu Han worry. He pretended to look down at the dog and said with a smile, “Hubby, you’re turning into a philosopher.”
“That’s just how I am, wife,” Gu Han smiled very tenderly. “Having lived thirty-five years, being with my Ranran is the first time I feel life is truly worth it. The sweetness of dating Ranran makes me forget all the bitterness from my childhood up through starting my business.”
“Psh, how could it be that exaggerated,” Qi Ran said as his urge to cry finally became uncontrollable. He choked out, “Gu Han, you’re so strange. How can there be a man like you who coaxes his wife like a child?”
“Ranran, why are you crying?”
Gu Han hurriedly washed his hands and ran over, squatting beside Qi Ran to hug him: “Ranran, tell Hubby, what’s wrong? Why did baby suddenly start crying? I’m worried about you.”
“Hubby, it’s nothing,” Qi Ran hugged Gu Han back, leaning into him while wiping his tears. “My emotions have been so unstable lately. I’m even annoying myself with the crying, but I can’t help it. I’m sorry, Hubby.”
“It’s okay, it’s okay, Ranran. Don’t apologize to me. Ranran is just sick; you won’t want to cry once you’re better.”
Gu Han kissed Qi Ran’s tear-stained face, coaxing him: “Hubby will stay with Ranran while you recover. Besides, little babies do cry often. Ranran is a little kid, and being a crybaby is very cute too.”
Qi Ran sat on the floor, embracing Gu Han for a long time. He eventually looked up at the darkening sky and reluctantly let go of Gu Han’s waist: “Hubby, it’s time to eat, right? You’ve stayed with me for so long again.”
“Ranran, eating is important, one can’t go without meals. For some people at certain stages, eating is the most important thing in a day. But my Ranran is more important. We can eat a bit later.”
Gu Han rubbed Qi Ran’s hair: “Baby, do you feel any better?”
“Much better!” Qi Ran’s eyes finally lit up, just as they had when he first met Gu Han. “Hubby is so good. You’ve saved me time and time again. I will definitely work hard to overcome my separation anxiety. I don’t want to be Hubby’s burden.”
