The General's Love Glitch - Chapter 14
Jun Jue didn’t stay long in the room. When she left, Ruan Wei was still curled up in the corner of the bed, her face completely hidden under the oversized hood.
“No one will disturb you anymore. Rest well.”
…
Only after hearing the door close and confirming that Jun Jue had truly left did Ruan Wei remove her hood. She waited another minute, ensuring Jun Jue wouldn’t suddenly return, before slipping out of bed and padding to the bathroom in her slippers.
The red veins in her eyes gradually faded, and her two small fangs retracted.
Ruan Wei finally let out a sigh of relief.
She stared at her reflection in the mirror, worrying about the future.
If she couldn’t secure a stable blood supply, she risked exposing her true nature as a vampire at any moment.
What was worse, she had somehow developed a picky palate, she found the soldier’s blood unpalatable and had even vomited.
Was she truly becoming picky, or was that soldier’s blood just that revolting? Ruan Wei felt further investigation was needed.
…
At three in the afternoon, Ruan Wei opened the door of the room and set out to find a new target. Jun Jue was busy organizing the details of the recent battle and didn’t notice Ruan Wei leaving.
Unfamiliar with the starship, Ruan Wei wandered aimlessly, looking around in every direction.
Suddenly, she spotted someone ahead and froze. The person mirrored her reaction, their face twisting into an awkward, guilty expression.
It was the soldier she had bitten earlier.
“I’m sorry, General’s wife! I truly didn’t mean to scare you!” The soldier stood ramrod straight before bowing deeply at a 90-degree angle.
Though the general hadn’t punished him, he was still uneasy.
Ruan Wei hadn’t been frightened before, but now she was genuinely startled. Yet she couldn’t tell the truth that she had bitten him because she was desperate for blood.
She could only feign magnanimity. “It’s not your fault. The general called you over. You did nothing wrong.”
“Thank you, General’s wife!” The soldier finally felt a little more at ease.
“Are you looking for the general? She’s in the main cabin. Would you like me to guide you there?”
Ruan Wei, who had been fretting over her lack of direction, nodded eagerly. “I’d like you to guide me, but I’m not looking for the general.”
“Where would you like to go?”
“The refrigeration room.”
The soldier found it odd but didn’t dare question her, simply leading the way.
Ruan Wei’s mind was filled with visions of blood bags, each one a different flavor.
When she was little, her father, who worked at a hospital, would bring fresh blood bags home for her to drink.
She licked her lips, excitement bubbling up. At noon, she hadn’t gotten her fill, afraid Jun Jue would discover her secret, she had only dared to nibble at her fingertip, barely drinking anything.
Once inside the refrigeration room with the soldier’s help, Ruan Wei turned to him and said, “Thank you for guiding me. You may go now.”
Baffled, the soldier left in a daze.
…
Ruan Wei sniffed the air, trying to locate the blood bags by scent, but only caught the faintest whiff of blood.
That couldn’t be right.
She took a step forward, determined to search thoroughly.
But after circling the refrigeration room’s shelves several times, she still found no blood bags. The room contained only meat and animal organs, all cleaned, leaving only the slightest trace of blood.
No blood bags. Ruan Wei’s head drooped in disappointment.
The staff member in charge of the cold storage room dozed off for a moment. When he opened his eyes, he noticed a military-green figure on the screen. Squinting for a closer look, he nearly fell off his chair in shock.
Wasn’t that the General’s wife? What was she doing here alone? She might freeze!
The staff member, an ordinary male beta, hurried from his temperature-controlled office to the cold storage room.
“General’s wife, did you get lost?” he asked nervously, rubbing his arms for warmth.
The cold was unbearable the moment he stepped inside.
“No. May I ask you a question?”
“Of course, go ahead,” the staff member replied, tilting his head slightly before sneezing uncontrollably. “General’s wife, let’s step outside first.”
Ruan Wei realized the human in front of her was sensitive to the cold and nodded.
Once outside, seeing the staff member more comfortable, she tentatively asked, “Are there no blood bags in the cold storage room?”
“Why would we need blood bags in storage?” the staff member asked, puzzled.
“Don’t soldiers need blood transfusions if they’re injured?”
The staff member chuckled. “General’s wife, our Federation starships are equipped with specialized medical pods. The treatment method you’re referring to is only used in some remote areas or among the impoverished lower classes.”
“I see. The planet I came from was like that.”
The staff member paused briefly before smiling again. “So, you and the General had a cross-planetary romance.”
“Romance?” Ruan Wei blinked in confusion.
“Exactly! Who would’ve thought the General had such a romantic side? Not only did he secure two consecutive victories, but he also managed to have a whirlwind romance. This will surely become a legendary tale in the Federation, no, the entire galaxy!”
Ruan Wei pressed her lips together. Despite having explained the situation before, misunderstandings persisted. This time, she didn’t bother clarifying and simply bid the staff member farewell before leaving.
On her way back to the rest area, she kept thinking: if blood bags weren’t available, what other options did she have?
Could she just pounce on someone and bite them to drink their blood?
No, no, that would be too obvious and risk exposing her true nature.
What about sneaking a few sips from Jun Jue while he slept at night?
That wouldn’t work either. She’d tried once before, but Jun Jue had noticed immediately, nearly uncovering her secret.
Getting a sip of blood was proving to be so difficult.
Dejected, Ruan Wei returned to the rest area.
“Where have you been?”
Jun Jue, who seemed to have just returned, stood at the door, questioning her.
“The cold storage room.”
“The starship is about to dock. Get ready.”
Hearing they were nearing the Federation, hope flickered in Ruan Wei’s eyes. She moved closer to Jun Jue and asked, “General, are there hospitals in the Federation?”
“The Federation has public hospitals.”
“Do all hospitals have medical pods?”
“Some that serve the lower classes don’t. Medical pods are expensive. Why do you ask?”
“No reason,” Ruan Wei said, though inwardly she rejoiced. If the Federation had ordinary hospitals, she might still have a chance to access blood bags, no need to resort to biting people.
Jun Jue studied her with a probing gaze. Her delight was practically written all over her face, yet she claimed it was “nothing.” Was she worried about not being able to afford medical treatment in the Federation? But didn’t she have healing abilities?
Or was she afraid someone might discover her powers and imprison her again?
“General, once we reach the Federation, I’d like to find a job,” Ruan Wei suddenly announced.
Jun Jue looked at her. “There’s no need to rush into work.”
Having brought Ruan Wei to the Federation, she had no intention of letting her worry about money.
Ruan Wei nodded. She was self-aware after being imprisoned for ten years, she didn’t have any particularly impressive skills to offer. Finding a job was indeed something that couldn’t be rushed.
Just as she was lost in thought, the starship suddenly jolted. Instinctively, Ruan Wei pressed closer to Jun Jue, wrapping her arms around Jun Jue’s arm in the process.
Jun Jue lowered her gaze, her eyes settling on their intertwined arms.
After a moment, Jun Jue said, “The starship is landing.”
The ship came to a complete stop, no longer trembling, yet Ruan Wei still clung to her arm, unwilling to let go whether intentionally or absentmindedly, it was unclear.
Ruan Wei was doing it on purpose. Finally having the chance to get close to Jun Jue, she wasn’t about to let it slip away.
But this time, Jun Jue didn’t immediately urge her to release her arm, so Ruan Wei certainly wasn’t going to let go so quickly.
The two walked forward arm in arm like this. When they encountered soldiers emerging from the cabins ahead, Ruan Wei quickly released Jun Jue’s hand.
Though she wanted to stay close to Jun Jue a little longer, she didn’t want to fuel any more rumors.
Jun Jue glanced at Ruan Wei out of the corner of her eye and continued forward.
…
After disembarking from the starship, Jun Jue saw many familiar faces at the starport, lined up to welcome her. Cameras and microphones were already set up, and flashes began the moment she stepped off the ship. The Chief Executive, Lin Aimin, was also present, wearing a benevolent smile as he prepared to commend her.
Standing beside the Chief Executive was his daughter, Lin Qiyue. Next to Lin Qiyue was an unfamiliar face. Jun Jue’s eyes sharpened as she deduced that this was likely the reserve general, Zhuo Hanjun, who had nearly replaced her position.
Even in front of the Chief Executive and the throng of media, Jun Jue remained expressionless. The entire Federation’s citizens were well aware that their revered war goddess, General Jun Jue, was simply born this way, and no one had any complaints.
Ruan Wei, however, had never seen such a grand spectacle before. She planned to slip away unnoticed among the other soldiers.
“Jun Jue, who is she?”
Lin Qiyue suddenly stepped forward, pointing at Ruan Wei, who was trying to sneak away. Her eyes reddened as she asked, “Is she the general’s wife you brought back this time?”
Ruan Wei knew they were talking about her. She froze on the spot, not daring to turn around and face the overwhelming crowd, nor to speak up in her own defense. She was afraid of saying the wrong thing, it was best to let Jun Jue explain.
But Jun Jue offered no explanation. Instead, she turned her head and looked at Ruan Wei’s retreating figure.
She said, “Weiwei, come here.”
