- Chapter 55.1 - Destroying the Sect – Death
“You came to protect me?” Xiao Yu was shocked. She looked around and saw Yan Ziqiong staring at her and Coal Ball with wide eyes. She suddenly remembered that he didn’t know about her and Coal Ball and didn’t know how to explain for a moment.
“Yes, the Demon Venerable—”
Xiao Yu quickly smacked Coal Ball, and the voice came to an abrupt halt.
“Who did it just mention? Did I just hear the words ‘Demon Venerable’?” Yan Ziqiong suspiciously scrutinized Xiao Yu, thinking she was hiding something from him.
Xiao Yu hurriedly tried to muddle through: “You misheard. It didn’t say that.”
Yan Ziqiong kept staring at Xiao Yu, making her scalp tingle.
But then, Coal Ball re-materialized, floating between the two of them. It was too late for Xiao Yu to hit him again.
“They’re already fighting inside. I’m going to protect you!” Coal Ball suddenly grew in size, completely covering Xiao Yu. He turned to face Yan Ziqiong, staring at him.
“You are a demon beast.”
Yan Ziqiong: “Yes, I am. Who sent you?”
Although he was wary of this devil, it seemed to have a good relationship with Xiao Yu and shouldn’t harbor any malicious intent toward them.
“I am—”
Coal Ball stopped before finishing, and Xiao Yu breathed a sigh of relief.
“I won’t tell you.” Coal Ball turned around and said to Xiao Yu, “They’re fighting fiercely inside. Don’t go in, okay?”
Xiao Yu was shocked. She brushed Coal Ball aside and met Yan Ziqiong’s gaze: “What’s going on? I don’t hear any movement at all.”
Yan Ziqiong nodded, surprised: “Is it telling the truth?”
He scrutinized Coal Ball again, nodding thoughtfully.
“Hey, do you know how many demon beasts are inside? Did your Demon Clan go in too?”
Coal Ball snorted and ignored him.
Xiao Yu had to ask herself to get an answer.
Yan Ziqiong listened intently beside her.
“There’s a formation inside. Humans can’t get out.”
Xiao Yu looked at herself, then at Coal Ball, and finally at Yan Ziqiong.
Coincidentally, none of the three of them were human.
“Then can we still get in?” Xiao Yu asked, unable to resist poking Coal Ball, only touching the cool, misty black fog.
Coal Ball thought carefully, then nodded: “It seems like you can go in.”
Under their expectant gazes, he added, “You don’t want to go in, do you! The fighting is intense inside. If you go in, I won’t protect you anymore.”
Xiao Yu got the answer she wanted and didn’t take Coal Ball’s words seriously.
Last time in the Sand Demon Territory, Coal Ball ran even faster than she did. How could it protect her?
She looked at Yan Ziqiong and asked, “Should we go in?”
Yan Ziqiong grinned: “Of course. Since we’re already here.”
He turned his attention to Coal Ball, but then, without warning, he quickly trapped Coal Ball.
Electric sparks crackled around it. Coal Ball touched the barrier and immediately dissipated slightly.
“To prevent you from tipping them off, I’ll have to trouble you.” Yan Ziqiong gestured to Xiao Yu with his eyes, telling her to follow him.
Xiao Yu saw Coal Ball looking at her pitifully, its tiny bead-like eyes almost disappearing.
“Are you really going in?” Coal Ball didn’t dare to touch the cage, looking at Xiao Yu: “It’s very dangerous inside.”
Xiao Yu nodded: “I have some matters to take care of.”
Since the fighting had already begun, she could only see if she could help. If she couldn’t change the Yuehui Sect’s fate in the book, then there was nothing she could do.
As Xiao Yu started to leave, she heard Coal Ball call out to her: “Don’t leave me behind! Take me with you, I can protect you!”
Yan Ziqiong was intrigued when he heard this. He removed the damaging formation on the cage, leaving only the confining one.
With a wave of his hand, Coal Ball floated in front of him: “Don’t play tricks.”
Coal Ball tried hard to open its tiny eyes, annoyed: “Mind your own business.”
It floated behind Xiao Yu and complained: “Why are you with him? He’s not as good as Wen Yu.”
Xiao Yu: “…”
So talkative.
Xiao Yu concealed her aura and approached the Yuehui Sect with Yan Ziqiong.
She couldn’t hear any movement along the way, so quiet that she began to doubt whether Coal Ball was telling the truth.
Until Coal Ball suddenly whispered in her ear: “The formation set up by the Demon Clan is just ahead. Be careful.”
Xiao Yu and Yan Ziqiong exchanged a look. He immediately reached out to explore the edge of the formation, quickly detecting demonic energy on the rock face.
Xiao Yu watched Yan Ziqiong use his demon power to carefully find several spots of demonic energy on the rock face.
With a gentle push, the demon power passed like a breeze, scattering the demonic energy and revealing the formation hidden beneath.
Various runes were carved into the rock face. Xiao Yu didn’t understand them and asked Coal Ball, “What is this?”
Coal Ball leaned in to look carefully. After looking, he saw Yan Ziqiong also leaning in and immediately floated back to Xiao Yu’s side.
“It looks like some kind of teleportation array? I don’t know much about it.”
Xiao Yu asked again, “Is this the formation you mentioned that keeps humans from getting out?”
Coal Ball shook its head: “No.”
Yan Ziqiong recognized the formation: “This is a Demon Race teleportation array. Looking at the traces, it must have been set up over a month ago.”
He looked up through the trees at the Yuehui Sect, his eyes heavy: “This was premeditated.”
“Can you break this formation?”
Xiao Yu looked carefully, but finally shook her head. She had never seen this kind of formation.
Yan Ziqiong quickly made up his mind: “You and this devil go in first and check the situation. If there’s any trouble you can’t handle, come out immediately. I will deal with this teleportation array.”
His expression was somewhat solemn: “I’m afraid there aren’t many people left inside.”
Xiao Yu was startled. Without further delay, after getting the incantation to control Coal Ball’s formation from Yan Ziqiong, she took Coal Ball and headed toward the Yuehui Sect.
Along the way, she could sense a lot of demonic energy. When she uncovered it, she found that it was all runes for the teleportation array.
A feeling of unease grew in her heart.
As she approached the main gate of the Yuehui Sect, Coal Ball alerted her. Xiao Yu temporarily released her confinement on Coal Ball and saw it release demonic energy. A moment later, a formation indeed opened at the main gate, revealing an entrance.
Xiao Yu took a deep breath, re-confined Coal Ball, and took it with her as she walked in.
It was a scene completely different from outside the sect.
The moment her body entered, she felt an overwhelming wave of demonic energy. Then, she saw the crescent moon rising in the night sky obscured by black fog. Even the moonlight became dull and oppressive.
The devils flew past Xiao Yu, but none of them stopped.
Before they arrived, Qiu Hong was still asking the Xuanqiu Sect for help.
“Tell them this: if they don’t come, the next target will be their Xuanqiu Sect!”
Qiu Hong yelled at the messenger among the frightened people: “As fellow cultivators, in the face of a great enemy, we should wholeheartedly assist the endangered sect! How can he stand aside and do nothing?”
“The Seven Swords Sect is gone. If my Yuehui Sect also falls, can the Xuanqiu Sect escape?”
The messenger received the order and immediately left the sect to seek help from the Xuanqiu Sect, but was intercepted and killed halfway.
When Qiu Hong received the news that the messenger’s life tablet had shattered, he slumped onto his chair, his eyes glazed over.
“How could this be? How could this be!”
Several deacons were urging Qiu Hong to invite Wen Yu back.
“Now only the Sword Venerable can save us! Sect Master, you can’t sacrifice the Yuehui Sect just because of your pride!”
“We all advised you when you told that Lian Qiao to undermine the Sword Venerable’s prestige.”
“But you went ahead stubbornly. Such a powerful patron, gone just like that. Now look, karma has come!”
Nan Chenghui did indeed send a message to Wen Yu, but the Demon Clan deliberately used formations to create a time difference, making the outside world believe that the beast tide would take another two or three days to arrive, when in fact, they had already infiltrated.
And it was very difficult for any message from inside the Yuehui Sect to get out.
By the time Nan Chenghui’s message reached Wen Yu, the Yuehui Sect was already under attack by the Demon Clan and the Demon Race.
Qiu Hong’s spiritual power burst out, immediately silencing everyone.
“What’s the use of talking about it now! Why don’t you go and invite him!” He scanned the deacons, who were shrinking their heads like quails, and sneered: “You were all so eloquent. Why aren’t you going to invite him now?”
The deacons felt he was being unreasonable. They all shook their heads, looking troubled.
“Go and figure out a way for me immediately! Break this demonic formation!”
The deacons hesitated, but finally shook their heads in unison and walked out of the main hall.
“We will be corrupted by demonic energy and have our minds devoured if we get close to the demonic formation. How are we supposed to break it?”
“Peh, I knew from the start he was short-sighted and brainless. He could mess up such a simple thing. Karma, this is karma!”
After the cursing deacons left, Duanmuying walked out, looking worriedly at Qiu Hong.
“Father, why don’t I go and invite Master back? I am his disciple, he shouldn’t just ignore us.”
Her words were refuted by Qiu Hong: “You go? How will you go? How will you bypass the demonic formation?”
“I—” Duanmuying hesitated. She wanted to tell Qiu Hong that Nan Chenghui could help, but she was afraid Qiu Hong would get angry if he heard Nan Chenghui’s name.
“We can find a way,” Duanmuying said anxiously. “This beast tide came so suddenly, and it happened right after Master left the sect. It must have been premeditated.”
She still couldn’t believe that Lian Qiao would do such a thing.
But the facts were laid out before her, forcing her to believe.
“Do you also think Lian Qiao colluded with the Demon Race and the Demon Clan, not only killing people in the secret realm but also bringing the demon beasts to attack several sects?” Qiu Hong glared at Duanmuying, pressing her. His tone was firm, clearly indicating that he did not believe it.
Duanmuying was a little afraid. She didn’t want the events of a few years ago to repeat.
“But Father…” She wavered.
She had been thinking carefully these past few days. Since suddenly finding Lian Qiao in the Sand Demon Territory, Lian Qiao had hinted several times on the flying boat back to the Yuehui Sect that she shouldn’t trust demons and devils.
And after returning to the sect, Lian Qiao had subtly questioned her about the relationship between Xiao Yu and Wen Yu.
Combining these subtle details, it was possible to find clues upon closer inspection.
When Wen Yu finally claimed that Lian Qiao was colluding with the Demon Race and harming the participating disciples, her first reaction was that it was impossible.
But how could the dignified Sword Venerable lie for the sake of one cultivator?
It was simply that they subconsciously only trusted their loved ones, relied on them, and were unwilling to believe any hint of wickedness from them.
“Father, is it possible that everything Master said was true—”
“Nonsense!”
Qiu Hong flew into a rage out of humiliation. He had severed ties with Wen Yu in front of so many people, certain that he was right. How could he admit he was wrong now?
“You said it yourself. You said you saw that fox spirit kill Lian Qiao with your own eyes, that’s why I…” Qiu Hong looked at the tears on Duanmuying’s face and suddenly stopped speaking.
Duanmuying stepped forward and pleaded with him: “Father, let’s go and invite Master back. Only he can save us.”
“Father, Master won’t hurt us…”
Qiu Hong pushed Duanmuying away, like an enraged lion, utterly furious.
“Do you think he is some kind of good person? He only chose to come to my Yuehui Sect because he coveted the rich spiritual energy on the back mountain. If other sects had more abundant spiritual energy than the Yuehui Sect, would he still have chosen the Yuehui Sect?”
“Xiao Ying, you think too simply of human nature.”
“But I don’t want to think about these things now! I just want to live, I just want you to live!” Duanmuying wiped away her tears, heartbroken: “Mother is already dead. You can’t die!”
“Father, if you die, I will be all alone.”
“I’m scared.”
Tears streamed down Duanmuying’s face.
Ever since Wen Yu left, the Seven Swords Sect was breached, and the news that the beast tide was heading for the Yuehui Sect arrived, she couldn’t sleep at night.
She thought day and night, praying that the Yuehui Sect could withstand the attack, praying that Wen Yu would return to their aid.
But as the beast tide drew closer, the people sent out for help vanished without a trace.
Duanmuying was afraid.
She was afraid that her only relative would die in front of her. She was afraid that she was about to die.
She had thought about going to invite Wen Yu back herself, but she was afraid Qiu Hong would stop her.
However, the beast tide wouldn’t wait for them. In just a few days, the attack had already begun.
They no longer had a chance to seek help.
They could only hope that someone noticed the Yuehui Sect’s abnormality and came to their aid.
Or perhaps…
A lavish hope existed in Duanmuying’s heart. She hoped that Nan Chenghui hadn’t left, and that Nan Chenghui would beg Wen Yu on her behalf, begging Wen Yu to return and save them.
Nan Chenghui did do this, but it was already too late.
The demonic formation sealed the Yuehui Sect. Humans couldn’t leave. Once they touched the formation, they would be corrupted by demonic energy.
When countless demon beasts appeared, Qiu Hong was filled with disbelief.
A steward reported to him that they had found a Demon Race teleportation array inside the sect. These demon beasts had unknowingly broken into the Yuehui Sect through the teleportation array, and in the blink of an eye, they severed the heads of disciples.
“Quick! Quick, go find someone to beg the Sword Venerable!” Qiu Hong roared while fighting the assault with the deacons: “Quickly go beg the Xuanqiu Sect and the Xuanji Gate for aid!”
However, it was already too late.
All communications were cut off. Those who tried to break out were entangled by demonic energy, quickly losing their minds and attacking indiscriminately.
When the demonic formation became visible, Qiu Hong’s entire head buzzed, and he was dumbfounded.
He had seen it as a child during the previous war between the human and demon races.
That formation had harmed many cultivators back then. Cultivators caught in the formation were all confused and killed each other.
The devil was an insurmountable existence in this world. Cultivators feared it, and demon beasts were terrified of it.
So when the formation appeared, Qiu Hong knew that they could not escape this calamity.
No wonder the Seven Swords Sect was breached so easily. It wasn’t because the demon beasts were so strong; it was because they had been exploited.
He told the deacons to hold the line and ran to find Duanmuying.
Seeing a demon beast trying to sneak attack Duanmuying from behind, his heart almost leaped out of his chest.
Qiu Hong struck the demon beast away and saw Duanmuying looking at him with surprise: “Father, why are you here?”
