- Chapter 25 - The Deadly Trapping Array – A Dead End
After Xiaoyu woke up, the first thing she saw was the unconscious Duanmu Ying and Nan Chenghui.
Looking around again, they had been locked in a prison cell.
She hurriedly stood up, feeling a throbbing pain in the back of her head.
Wen Yu was gone!
Xiaoyu panicked for a moment when she realized Wen Yu was missing, but slowly calmed herself down.
She couldn’t lose control right now.
Xiaoyu observed her surroundings. There was no movement outside for the moment, so she walked toward Duanmu Ying.
Seeing the purplish handprint on her neck, she muttered inwardly, Serves her right.
Duanmu Ying’s condition didn’t look very good. Xiaoyu wasn’t sure if she could be roused.
Xiaoyu didn’t dare to touch Duanmu Ying’s body, calling out to her in a whisper: “Hey, wake up, wake up.”
She called several times, but Duanmu Ying didn’t stir at all.
Looking at the marks on her, it seemed she was seriously injured and had fallen into a coma.
Xiaoyu spread her hands, helpless.
The only person with any fighting power here was unconscious. How was she, someone who had only transmigrated a few days ago, supposed to rescue herself?
Was she dreaming?
Xiaoyu moved back, not daring to go near Nan Chenghui, keeping her distance as she secretly observed him.
He was sprawled on the ground, his hair covering his face, making his features unclear.
But the clearest thing Xiaoyu remembered from the book’s description of Nan Chenghui was that he could not refuse.
He wouldn’t refuse others, whether it was a good request or a bad one.
This led to many unnecessary misunderstandings. When female fellow disciples gave Nan Chenghui gifts, he accepted them. Duanmu Ying saw this and grew jealous, but Nan Chenghui didn’t know how to explain.
In short, one person had a mouth but only breathed fire, and the other had a mouth but didn’t speak.
Xiaoyu snapped out of her thoughts, moving slightly further away to give the “couple” more space, but she was starting to get anxious.
Was she really going to be imprisoned here and eventually killed by demon beasts?
She also didn’t know what Wen Yu’s situation was.
Xiaoyu still couldn’t understand why such a powerful person, even with half his cultivation suppressed, would allow the Demon Domain Lord to take him away without the slightest resistance?
Furthermore, in the original book, she never read any plot where Wen Yu was imprisoned by the Demon Domain Lord of the Sand Demon Domain. Could it be that her interference had changed the original storyline again?
After thinking for a long time, she still couldn’t figure it out, but instead started to feel a little stuffy and hot.
Xiaoyu instinctively reached for her outer coat, only feeling the newly bought clothes before remembering that the garment Wen Yu had given her last night had fallen off somewhere.
She felt increasingly irritable.
Glancing again at the unconscious Duanmu Ying, Xiaoyu decided to find a way out herself.
She first walked to the prison door, seeing several Serpent Demons standing guard not far away. She thought, This is tricky.
How could she escape while avoiding the Serpent Demons’ watch?
Use the Bewitchment Spell?
Xiaoyu clenched her hands. Just as she was about to try, she found that her demonic power was restrained and unusable.
Damn it! The Demon Domain Lord had a trick up his sleeve.
In her anxiety, she suddenly saw a ball of black mist float in, drift into the cell, and hover before Xiaoyu’s eyes.
Upon seeing the black mist, Xiaoyu’s eyes lit up.
This was Coal Ball, which she had forgotten about last night.
“How did you get in?” Xiaoyu glanced in the direction of the Serpent Demons. Seeing that she hadn’t attracted their attention, she motioned for Coal Ball to float inside.
Coal Ball blinked its bean-like eyes and complained: “You didn’t kill Wen Yu last night, and now that he’s been captured by the Demon Domain Lord, we can’t kill him anymore.”
Xiaoyu caught the information in Coal Ball’s words and asked: “Do you know Wen Yu’s current situation?”
Coal Ball grumbled: “The place where they locked him up, I can’t get in.”
It circled Xiaoyu once and added: “There’s an array there. Wen Yu will die inside soon, too. Even if we didn’t kill him, we can still report back to the Demon Venerable.”
Xiaoyu’s heart jolted. She reached out to grab Coal Ball, but grabbed nothing but air.
Afraid that Coal Ball would run away immediately, she softened her tone, trying to make Coal Ball relax its guard: “Wen Yu is so powerful. Can an array really kill him?”
“I heard that Demon Domain Lord say the array is very powerful. It can definitely kill Wen Yu.” Coal Ball swung around, its tone less resentful now.
Xiaoyu, however, grew anxious.
The book set Wen Yu’s martial power to be so strong. How could he possibly be killed by an array?
If Wen Yu was killed, wouldn’t she be doomed?
No, this couldn’t happen.
“Then can you help me get out?”
Coal Ball hovered in front of Xiaoyu. Under her expectant gaze, it shook its body: “I don’t have that ability yet…”
Xiaoyu had to try another way: “Then can you unseal my restrained demonic power?”
Coal Ball continued to shake.
Xiaoyu: You useless devil!
Xiaoyu rubbed her forehead. It seemed she couldn’t rely on this demon to save her.
“Let me ask you something.”
Coal Ball floated to the top of Xiaoyu’s head. Her fox ears poked directly into the black mist.
Coal Ball wiggled. It looked, but didn’t see anything, yet it felt like something was poking into its body.
It floated down to Xiaoyu’s shoulder, where it felt a bit better.
“Go ahead and ask.”
Xiaoyu was about to speak when she heard a sound from Duanmu Ying. Panicked, she immediately pressed down on Coal Ball on her shoulder, and the black mist instantly dispersed.
Duanmu Ying only groaned and didn’t wake up.
Xiaoyu breathed a sigh of relief. When she reached for her shoulder again, she didn’t feel the black mist.
“Are you still here?”
I didn’t slap you apart again, did I?
No sooner had she spoken than Coal Ball re-condensed in front of Xiaoyu.
“Don’t hit me again!”
The black mist glared with its bean-sized eyes. As no limbs were visible, in Xiaoyu’s view, it was just a ball floating.
She apologized and quickly asked: “Did the Demon Venerable ask the Demon Domain Lord to kill Wen Yu?”
If the Demon Venerable was behind this, she had no hope of escaping.
“I don’t know, maybe.” Coal Ball was also confused. Based on its observations, more and more demons and monsters were trying to kill Wen Yu.
“Anyway, Wen Yu is already trapped by the Demon Domain Lord, so we don’t need to do anything else.”
Xiaoyu found this strange.
When they went to the Demon Domain Lord’s residence, the Demon Domain Lord was clearly intimidated by Wen Yu. Wen Yu took Nan Chenghui right in front of him, and he didn’t dare to stop him.
Why would he suddenly appear now and take them away with such a flimsy excuse?
If he was talking about violating the Penglai Covenant, Sand Demons had also attacked humans. The Demon Domain had violated it too. Wasn’t the Demon Domain Lord afraid of this matter being exposed and facing retribution from the Human Clan?
It was very strange.
“Then let me ask you,” Xiaoyu glanced at Duanmu Ying. Seeing that she was still unconscious, she continued: “How did you find me? You found me three times in a row.”
Coal Ball swayed, stating matter-of-factly: “The Demon Venerable told me.”
Xiaoyu suddenly felt the sky collapsing.
So the Demon Venerable had always known where she was. How could she possibly run away now?
It was fine when she was with Wen Yu, but now that Wen Yu was trapped and the Demon Venerable came looking for her, wouldn’t she be dead?
“Did the Demon Venerable come here?” Xiaoyu had just asked when she remembered that Coal Ball had already said last night that the Demon Venerable hadn’t come. She quickly changed the question.
“Then how does the Demon Venerable know where I am?” Xiaoyu asked while examining her body, but she couldn’t find a tracking device.
“The Dem—”
Just as Coal Ball was about to speak, Xiaoyu suddenly heard someone speak. Panicked, she immediately slapped Coal Ball away again and looked toward the source of the sound.
“Where am I?”
Duanmu Ying was awake.
The moment she opened her eyes, she saw Nan Chenghui very close to her. She instinctively wanted to move closer to him but stopped her movement.
She hesitated.
Worry and fear intertwined in her eyes, halting her forward motion.
She deliberately avoided looking at Nan Chenghui and surveyed her surroundings.
Seeing Xiaoyu, she asked:
“Why are you here?” Duanmu Ying had just finished speaking when she realized they were all imprisoned.
“Where is Master?” She dragged her body, trying to stand up, but the pain from her injuries immediately flared up, making her collapse back down.
Xiaoyu replied: “He was arrested.”
Duanmu Ying grew anxious and immediately scolded Xiaoyu: “Why didn’t you save Master? Did you just watch him get taken away?”
Xiaoyu found this unbelievable.
Was this something she could just save him from?
“He’s so powerful. How was I supposed to know he would be captured by the Demon Domain Lord? Besides, my demonic power—”
Her explanation was cut short. Duanmu Ying accused Xiaoyu with every word.
“Master, to help Senior Brother—” Duanmu Ying’s expression froze for a moment when she mentioned Nan Chenghui, “—to help Senior Brother suppress his demonic energy, exhausted most of his spiritual power. And with his cultivation suppressed by the Demon Domain, couldn’t you tell that Master was in a very bad state, which is why he couldn’t defeat the Demon Domain Lord?”
Xiaoyu’s eyes widened, and she shook her head honestly: “I couldn’t tell.”
Duanmu Ying was choked by this remark and couldn’t think of a rebuttal for a moment.
“Well, if he didn’t say anything, and you didn’t say anything, how was I supposed to know he had depleted his spiritual power and couldn’t escape?” Xiaoyu found it amusing.
Wen Yu hadn’t even said anything, but Duanmu Ying was already blaming her.
Annoying.
Whether it was because her body was resisting the Demon Domain or because Duanmu Ying kept targeting her, Xiaoyu felt extremely irritated at the moment.
Everything was blamed on her. Before, she was told that because she was a demon, she should die and be killed. Now that Wen Yu was in trouble, she was blamed for not helping.
Was that something she could have done?
“And here Master was constantly protecting you! Is this how you repay him? Sure enough, no demon beast can be trusted!” Duanmu Ying gasped, surrounded by various emotions. Unable to find an outlet, she latched onto Xiaoyu and ranted.
It was as if Xiaoyu was the one who had done everything wrong.
She didn’t know why, but her heart was terrified.
She couldn’t face Nan Chenghui’s identity as a devil, nor could she deal calmly with Xiaoyu.
She only knew how to use blame to conceal her true emotions.
She was afraid.
Afraid that the concept of eliminating demons and devils that she had always upheld would fall upon herself, unable to be as impartial as before.
Her Senior Brother, with whom she had spent eight years, turned out to be a devil.
Duanmu Ying was caught in confusion and panic.
Until Xiaoyu’s voice pulled her out: “I haven’t harmed you, and I never asked you to trust me. From start to finish, I only interacted directly with Wen Yu and didn’t interfere with you in the slightest.”
“I am not taking the blame for this.”
“But you are a demon—”
Xiaoyu immediately cut her off: “I only manifested as a demon, and you only gained a human identity.”
“Nan Chenghui is still a devil.” Xiaoyu shifted the conflict. Both looked at the unconscious Nan Chenghui.
“That’s different! He’s my Senior Brother—” Duanmu Ying instinctively retorted.
Xiaoyu let out a cold hmph.
Double standard, hmph.
She turned her head, refusing to look at the two of them, but her heart grew even more irritable.
She was already vexed, and talking to Duanmu Ying made it worse.
She ran off to check on the Serpent Demons, trying to figure out how to escape.
But she didn’t see the Serpent Demons that were usually guarding there. Her heart lifted. Just as she was about to try to break out of the prison, a head suddenly popped up. Xiaoyu jumped in fright, stumbling back repeatedly.
“Hey, what’s with that expression?”
Lord Fushan only showed his head, looking like a disembodied head floating, which was quite startling.
Xiaoyu composed herself, calmed down, and said in surprise: “Lord Fushan!”
She made sure to keep her voice low when she spoke.
Lord Fushan’s head wobbled, glancing into the cell: “All three of you are here.”
Duanmu Ying weakly asked: “Did Master ask you to save us?”
Lord Fushan shook his head: “I haven’t found him. Let’s get the three of you out first.”
Xiaoyu saw a cluster of small flames appear out of thin air, slowly dismantling the prison bars.
Lord Fushan revealed his body. Seeing Xiaoyu leaning in to look, he chuckled: “I just recovered my spiritual power, so I’m a bit rusty and slow.”
Xiaoyu shook her head, only finding it strange. If the circumstances were right, she would have liked to watch Lord Fushan take his time.
“How did you know we were here?”
Lord Fushan answered casually: “I have my ways of knowing.”
Xiaoyu said, “Oh,” guessing that Rong Niang might have helped.
“I can’t use my demonic power. Can you check it for me?” As she spoke, Xiaoyu gave Duanmu Ying a look.
Duanmu Ying immediately checked her body, realizing that her meridians were sealed, and she couldn’t use her spiritual power.
She immediately requested: “Please, Lord Fushan, unseal my meridians. I need to go save Master.”
Xiaoyu was surprised, thinking Duanmu Ying had such a righteous side.
Lord Fushan stopped what he was doing, disassembled the prison door, and said to Duanmu Ying: “Your meridians can be unsealed, but don’t get involved in saving Wen Yu.”
“You go save Wen Yu, and you’re just going to leave the person on the ground?” Lord Fushan said in annoyance: “Don’t expect me to drag this kind of burden around.”
Duanmu Ying grew anxious: “But Master, he—”
Lord Fushan waved his hand, asking directly: “Do you still want to live?”
Duanmu Ying didn’t answer immediately. She bit her lip, looking at Nan Chenghui, lost in thought.
Xiaoyu quietly edged toward the exit. Her lowered hand suddenly felt a chill. She looked down and saw a ball of pitch-black mist shrinking in her palm.
“!”
Xiaoyu quickly put her hand behind her back, shaking it back and forth, trying to flick Coal Ball away.
There are human cultivators here. Why are you, a devil, suddenly running out and clinging to me!
You might not be afraid, but I am!
She glanced at Lord Fushan, whose back was to her. Seeing that he wasn’t looking in her direction, she immediately turned her head to look at her palm.
A glance showed two clusters of black mist clinging to her palm, refusing to be shaken off.
Xiaoyu shook her hand again, but suddenly heard Lord Fushan’s voice, startling her out of her wits.
“That demon beast, let me see your situation.”
Xiaoyu quickly turned back, hesitating whether to go over.
If she was found to have a devil in her hand, even if Lord Fushan didn’t act, Duanmu Ying would be the first to charge at her.
But Lord Fushan didn’t give Xiaoyu a chance to hesitate. He strode over: “Time is running out. We can’t delay.”
He directly grabbed the wrist Coal Ball was clinging to. The moment he grabbed it, Xiaoyu’s heart leaped to her throat.
She watched helplessly as Lord Fushan grabbed and lifted her hand.
Her palm was empty; there was no black mist.
Xiaoyu suddenly breathed a sigh of relief, wondering why Coal Ball had suddenly disappeared.
“I dodged quickly, right.”
A sudden voice near her ear made Xiaoyu jump. Lord Fushan looked at her strangely: “I haven’t even started yet. Why are you scared?”
Xiaoyu gave a forced smile, suppressing the urge to cover her ear.
She glanced toward her ear, not seeing Coal Ball.
“I have a magical artifact. They can’t find me.”
Before Xiaoyu could fully relax, Coal Ball dropped another bomb: “Is he going to save Wen Yu? I know where he is! Let’s go find Wen Yu and kill him! We’ll collect the reward!”
Xiaoyu really wanted to slap Coal Ball away immediately.
Go and kill Wen Yu while dealing with Lord Fushan, Duanmu Ying, and the Demon Domain Lord?
Dream on!
You go if you want; I’m not going.
Unfortunately, Lord Fushan was here, and Xiaoyu couldn’t openly speak.
This led Coal Ball to believe she agreed, and it kept chattering in her ear.
“The array there is too powerful. It will be hard to get in to kill him.” Coal Ball began to ponder.
Xiaoyu prayed that Coal Ball would quickly abandon this unrealistic idea and stay away from her.
Just as she was thinking about this, a sudden pain shot through her palm. Xiaoyu subconsciously tried to pull her hand back, but Lord Fushan held it tightly.
“Don’t move, don’t move. Just a moment, it’ll be done soon.”
While Lord Fushan helped Xiaoyu unseal her demonic power, Duanmu Ying, who had recovered some spiritual power, immediately sat down to recuperate.
Xiaoyu peered outside. Currently, she didn’t see any Serpent Demons approaching.
“Then how should I leave this place later?”
The moment she asked this, she heard Coal Ball say: “Aren’t you going to kill Wen Yu?”
Xiaoyu tilted her head and snorted a denial.
Just at that moment, Lord Fushan finished unsealing her demonic power: “The three of you should disguise yourselves as the demon beasts here and blend in to escape. I’ll create some duplicates to cover our tracks.”
As he spoke, Lord Fushan took out a few diamond-shaped thin objects and gave one to Xiaoyu: “Take this snake scale. It can change your aura. As long as you don’t get too close, you won’t be discovered.”
He gave the remaining snake scales to Duanmu Ying and walked up to Nan Chenghui, checking his condition with spiritual power again.
As he acted, Lord Fushan’s hand using the spiritual power twitched noticeably, but he continued to output spiritual power.
Xiaoyu held the gray-brown scale, trying to use her demonic power. The snake scale immediately dissolved, but she didn’t feel any change in herself.
Duanmu Ying, on the other hand, reacted violently, glaring at Xiaoyu, almost ready to attack.
She slowly relaxed only after feeling that Xiaoyu’s demonic aura was different.
Duanmu Ying propped herself up and stood, asking: “My Senior Brother… is his condition very bad?”
Her gaze fell on the person who still showed no sign of waking up. The worry in her eyes was genuine, yet she couldn’t allow it to deepen further.
If Nan Chenghui weren’t unconscious right now, she wouldn’t know how to face him.
“His situation is not good. He’s constantly unconscious and might not be able to leave this place.” Lord Fushan sighed: “You support him, and I’ll see if I can wake him up.”
Lord Fushan told Duanmu Ying to pull Nan Chenghui up. Xiaoyu saw that she had little strength and, after thinking for a moment, walked over to help.
She wasn’t going to be able to leave for a while anyway.
Duanmu Ying saw her helping to support Nan Chenghui’s left side. She struggled internally but didn’t say thank you.
Lord Fushan’s fingertip pressed against Nan Chenghui’s forehead, injecting spiritual power.
Xiaoyu listened to Coal Ball’s voice, curious as to why Lord Fushan hadn’t discovered it.
Was Coal Ball’s magical artifact so powerful that even Lord Fushan couldn’t detect it?
“His demonic energy is so heavy. It’s heavier than mine. If he were in the Devil Realm, he could be a Devil General.”
Xiaoyu could only listen and couldn’t talk back to Coal Ball.
“It’s such a pity. If he cultivated the devil path, his cultivation level could be comparable to my brother’s.” Coal Ball muttered ceaselessly.
Xiaoyu really wanted to ask Coal Ball about the Devil General and his brother, but with others present, she couldn’t ask directly.
Nan Chenghui was too heavy. Xiaoyu’s arm was getting sore, but she didn’t move it.
Just as she turned her head to look elsewhere, she suddenly heard a muffled groan. Immediately afterward, she was thrown off by a huge force, crashing to the ground, her head buzzing with pain.
“He’s lost control due to the demonic energy attacking his heart!”
Lord Fushan’s voice reached Xiaoyu’s ears. She subconsciously thought, How many times has he been possessed by demonic energy now?
Before she could get up from the ground, a hand grabbed her arm, dragging her outward.
It was Coal Ball.
It had grown in size somehow and pulled her far away.
Xiaoyu was dumbfounded when she saw its figure, which was taller than a door.
“You’re exposed.”
Coal Ball instantly shrunk down, its bean-like eyes staring, pointing its small black mist hand at the two people fighting the raging Nan Chenghui.
“It’s fine. They’re busy. They won’t notice us here.”
Xiaoyu focused her eyes. Inside, the two were fighting Nan Chenghui with bare hands and were quickly suppressed.
But this commotion was significant. Xiaoyu was afraid it would attract the Serpent Demons.
She looked again at Lord Fushan’s side. Both of them were beaten down, unable to get up.
Xiaoyu had already considered leaving them and escaping by herself, but she still didn’t leave.
“Can you help them?”
Coal Ball snorted: “I can’t beat that devil.”
Xiaoyu was helpless and could only keep an eye out for the Serpent Demons.
When she turned her head, she saw Nan Chenghui choking Duanmu Ying with one hand while still managing to fend off Lord Fushan’s attacks with the other.
Xiaoyu gritted her teeth. Fine, for the sake of Lord Fushan saving me, I’ll try to save them.
She focused intently on Nan Chenghui, exerting all her strength, condensing her demonic power to cast her innate ability, attempting to target only Nan Chenghui.
Coal Ball watched from the side, asking curiously: “What are you doing?”
“Nonsense, I’m saving people.”
“Oh.” Coal Ball replied, seeing Xiaoyu sparing no effort to help the two human cultivators. It asked, puzzled: “Why are you helping them?”
Xiaoyu ignored it, gradually feeling strained. The current Nan Chenghui was not on the same level as when he was suppressed by Wen Yu.
The Bewitchment Spell had no effect whatsoever.
The few of them were busy suppressing Nan Chenghui and completely failed to notice the figures gradually approaching.
First, an arrow suddenly struck Xiaoyu’s left arm, interrupting her demonic power.
Then, several arrows fired simultaneously, all hitting the three of them.
“The one surnamed Che was right. By locking the three of you up separately, we could draw out you, the human cultivator who has been lurking in the Demon Domain for many years.”
Xiaoyu grimaced, her left arm drooping weakly. Seeing the sudden appearance of the Demon Domain Lord, she felt a sense of inescapable despair.
Clearly, this was a trap set by the Demon Domain Lord to lure Lord Fushan into the hook.
“You knew I was in the Demon Domain all along. Why wait until today to act?”
Lord Fushan was nearly hit in the heart by an arrow. If not for his years of practiced vigilance, he would have already gone to meet the King of Hell.
The Demon Domain Lord’s face was full of loathing, and the look in his eyes as he assessed Lord Fushan was undisguised disgust: “Who do you think spared you until today?”
Lord Fushan immediately thought of Rong Niang. The woman’s delicate figure flashed in his mind.
“Without Rong Rong to save you this time, let’s see how long you can survive.”
The Demon Domain Lord turned, ordering his retainers: “Lock them all in the deadly array. They can die with Wen Yu!”
Blood dripped into the sand. Xiaoyu saw the crystal-clear blue liquid oozing from her arm, realizing once again that she was no longer human.
The Serpent Demons roughly bound them. A magical artifact, seemingly appearing from nowhere, managed to lock Nan Chenghui’s demonic energy and allowed them to carry him away.
The three of them were driven toward the depths of the residence. Before they even got close to the deadly array, they could feel a terrifying killing intent.
It was a huge sand pit. Unless one walked to the edge, the bottom couldn’t be seen at all.
The Serpent Demons didn’t dare to get too close. With a hard shove, all three of them tumbled in.
Xiaoyu didn’t know how long she rolled, but she felt a sharp pain every time her left arm was pressed upon.
When her body finally stopped, she coughed up sand. Opening her eyes, she saw a familiar person.
He was kneeling there, his body pierced by countless taut red threads.
Xiaoyu saw him lift his head, his eyes meeting hers.
