- Chapter 14 - Entering the Demon Territory, Sensing
Why would anyone say countless heroic souls are buried here?
Because the battle where Wen Yu and the Demon Lord perished together took place right here.
The Demon Race threatened the lives of the leaders of several major sects and set up a devastating formation in the Human Realm, demanding that the Human Race submit to the Demon Realm and surrender the Human Realm.
Several sects jointly mobilized cultivators to rescue the hostages, but unexpectedly, the Demon Lord intervened halfway through and utterly defeated the Human Race cultivators.
Just as the Human Race was crushed and on the verge of being invaded by the Demon Race, they finally thought to seek help from Wen Yu.
When Xiaoyu read this, she was so disgusted by the faces of those supposedly righteous cultivators that she wanted to curse.
Yet, Wen Yu had a good temper and agreed.
Wen Yu proposed a trade for the battle: he would kill the Demon Lord, and the sects would no longer pursue his two disciples.
In this battle, he perished together with the Demon Lord, falling in the Desert Demon Territory.
This battle severely weakened the Human Race cultivators, but because Wen Yu killed the Demon Lord and crushed the Demon Race’s morale, he bought the Human Realm a chance at survival.
Xiaoyu thought at the time, Since the Human Realm’s strongest Sword Venerable and the Demon Lord are both dead, with the two strongest gone, the rest of them might as well perish together too, which would conveniently clear out the trash from both realms. No one should live.
But she only read up to that point and didn’t know if the Human Race ultimately defeated the Demon Race.
Looking out the window now, yellow sand raged across the sky, and a red sun hung in the west. If a few smoke signals were added, the scene before her would match that famous poem.
Xiaoyu stared for a few moments, awed by the magnificent sight, and then thought, With endless yellow sand, I can’t even see where the Demon Territory is.
The previous Demon Territory at least had many buildings, but all she saw now was sand.
And she didn’t see an entrance.
Just as she was thinking, the flying boat visibly descended.
It must be time to disembark.
Xiaoyu opened the door and immediately locked eyes with Duanmu Ying, who had also just opened her door.
Duanmu Ying was willing to give her a look this time, but it contained blatant killing intent.
Xiaoyu’s foot, which was about to step out of the room, paused. Just as she was about to retaliate with a fierce glare, she saw the person walk away without looking back.
“Little miss, quite cool.”
If she didn’t recall the things Duanmu Ying had done to her, Xiaoyu looked at Duanmu Ying’s retreating figure and thought she looked quite dashing.
Her hair was neatly tied into a high bun, she wore clean and sharp martial attire, and a sword hung at her waist. Her pace was quick.
At first glance, she had the demeanor of a heroic woman.
Xiaoyu looked twice, then looked down at the outer coat Wen Yu had given her over her ripped inner clothes…
When I get inside the Demon Territory, I must find suitable clothes.
She walked out of the cabin, just in time to see Wen Yu leap down.
The white-robed cultivator moved gracefully, landing softly and steadily.
Xiaoyu suddenly began to long for the day when she could use her demon abilities freely, allowing her to do things that ordinary people couldn’t.
The three of them stepped onto the yellow sand, and only Xiaoyu’s feet immediately sank into the sand.
She pulled her feet out, bent down to pick up her shoes, and emptied the sand from inside.
She decided to walk barefoot.
However, as soon as her feet touched the sand, a familiar sensation arose, a comfort as if returning to her own home.
Xiaoyu enjoyed the feeling for a moment, then her expression suddenly changed.
Damn it, I’ve been assimilated by the demon beasts. I actually find the demon beast lair comfortable.
But there was no time for Xiaoyu to dwell on it. Wen Yu directly gave her an order.
“If the entrance is nearby, your body should have a sense of it.” Wen Yu paused, then explained: “Human cultivators will have their cultivation suppressed upon entering the Demon Territory. We will need your help greatly inside.”
Xiaoyu got a headache.
She didn’t even know what the Desert Demon Territory looked like, having only read fragmented lines in the book, but now she had to be brave.
Her value was clearly established here. To gain Wen Yu’s trust and find a way to survive, she had to risk it!
Workhorses are meant to work.
But looking at the vast desert, Xiaoyu didn’t know where to start searching.
Body sensing?
Did feeling comfortable stepping on the sand count as sensing?
“Taoist Priest, can you be more specific?”
Before Wen Yu could speak, Duanmu Ying cut in: “Aren’t you a demon? You can’t even find your own lair. Useless.”
“Hey,” Xiaoyu retorted angrily. “If you can, you find it.”
Duanmu Ying saw Wen Yu nearby, so she didn’t talk back again, instead giving Xiaoyu a contemptuous look.
It made Xiaoyu want to rush over and hit her, settling all the new and old scores.
But Wen Yu was here. If he protected Duanmu Ying, she wouldn’t gain anything.
She could only roll up her sleeves and continue searching.
“Near the entrance, there should be a resonance or spiritual sensing,” Wen Yu ignored the tension between the two. “The closer you are, the more obvious the sensation.”
Xiaoyu listened carefully, trying to sense anything, and lifted her foot to step on the sand.
A tingling sensation spread from the soles of her feet to her entire body, so comfortable that she wanted to bury herself in the sand and do nothing.
After walking aimlessly for a while, she didn’t feel any spiritual sensation. Xiaoyu kept walking, turning to ask Wen Yu: “Taoist Priest, why don’t I feel anything?”
A light bulb suddenly went on in her mind: “Does a physical sensation count?”
As she walked, her entire body felt lighter, as if the fatigue of the past two days had been washed away.
Wen Yu was immediately drawn by this statement, lowering his eyes to look at Xiaoyu’s feet.
Her ankles beneath the white robe were strikingly fair against the yellow sand.
“How so?” At the same time, his fingers moved slightly, and a finger-sized restriction gradually formed.
Xiaoyu felt it carefully, her steps never stopping: “I feel completely relaxed, and I want to sleep.”
“Hmph, utterly unreliable, as expected,” Duanmu Ying grumbled behind them, dissatisfied.
“Taoist Priest, do you feel this way too?” Xiaoyu’s feet didn’t stop. She saw Wen Yu open his mouth.
“Come here—”
Xiaoyu had just taken one step when her foot missed the ground, and her whole body plummeted.
Before she was completely swallowed by the sand, she saw Wen Yu flick a finger at her. A golden, shining object flew toward her, quickly disappearing into her body.
Then, everything went black.
“Master, look! She clearly wanted to run away. She wasn’t sincerely looking for the entrance,” Duanmu Ying rushed to the closed patch of sand and stomped on it several times, but no entrance appeared.
Wen Yu simply stood quietly, glanced at his fingertip, and after sensing the restriction he had placed in Xiaoyu’s body, he spoke: “I have already placed a restriction on her. She cannot escape.”
Duanmu Ying’s eyes brightened. A thought surfaced in her mind as she looked at the sand.
It would be best if that demon never came back.
Wen Yu’s restriction had three functions. One was monitoring; he could sense her whereabouts within a certain distance. The second was protection; if someone attacked her, the restriction could protect the restricted person, but it would also transmit the attack information back to the master.
The final function was as a long-distance killing tool; as long as Wen Yu destroyed the restriction, the opponent would surely die.
If that fox demon developed the intention to escape, she would certainly die, and Duanmu Ying wouldn’t even need to lift a finger.
Seeing that Wen Yu had no intention of leaving, Duanmu Ying said incredulously: “Master, you’re not going to wait for her here, are you?”
After receiving a glance from Wen Yu, her mind went blank for a moment, and then resentment and anger surged up.
She really wanted to ask Wen Yu why he was keeping this fox demon. What use could she possibly be?
“Fine, I will wait here with Master then.” Duanmu Ying glared fiercely at the spot where Xiaoyu had fallen.
If Senior Brother hadn’t been kidnapped, she wouldn’t be waiting here for a demon.
If word got out, she would surely be ridiculed by her fellow disciples.
Both of them looked at the quicksand beneath their feet, but their emotions were distinctly different.
The sand beneath her feet was fine. Once she fell in, it seemed capable of swallowing her like water, covering her mouth.
Xiaoyu felt her nasal passages blocked, unable to breathe. Her whole body was constantly falling, and a strong sense of weightlessness swept over her.
Suddenly, her feet felt the warm touch of solid ground. Xiaoyu stabilized herself, opened her eyes, and saw countless demon beasts. Some looked like humanoids with animal faces, others like animals with human faces.
In short, they looked like various limbs and torsos of demon beasts and humans pieced together, with grotesque shapes and ugly appearances.
Xiaoyu tightly clenched her hands and bit her lip, barely restraining herself from screaming.
She got in?
Her body rigid, her head motionless, only her eyeballs turned, scanning the surroundings.
This seemed to be a centralized entrance and exit. Demon beasts continuously emerged from here, walking past Xiaoyu.
With green faces and tusks, they all completely overlooked Xiaoyu, heading towards a gigantic gate so tall she could barely see its top in the distance.
Xiaoyu took a deep breath, fighting hard to control her accelerating heartbeat, and told herself:
It’s okay, it’s okay.
At worst, I’ll just die, woo-woo-woo…
After calming herself down, Xiaoyu finally dared to walk.
Fortunately, these demon beasts didn’t notice her. Xiaoyu blended into the crowd and followed them towards the gate.
Midway, she carefully turned her head to look for Wen Yu. Catching a glimpse of the bizarrely shaped demon beasts, she immediately gave up on the idea.
It seems I’m the only one who came in.
She had suddenly missed her footing and fallen straight down, with no time to call for help.
Fortunately, by some fluke, she found the entrance. Now, the question was how to bring Wen Yu in.
Xiaoyu followed the demon beasts, getting closer and closer to the large gate.
Unexpectedly, there were humanoid demon beasts guarding the entrance!
Xiaoyu immediately stopped walking, wanting to turn back at once.
Two demon beasts stood at the gate, one on the left and one on the right. One held an iron hammer, the other an iron clamp, inspecting the passing demon beasts with ferocious expressions.
If I go up there, won’t I be exposed!
Before Xiaoyu could turn around, she felt a slap on her back. Xiaoyu stumbled, rushing forward a few steps.
“Hurry up.”
A gruff voice reached her ears from behind. Xiaoyu didn’t dare to look back and quickly caught up with the main group.
When she reached the gate, she finally saw the appearance of the humanoid demon beasts.
They wore a few pieces of cloth covering their vital areas. Their arms were coarse, looking like they were made of molded sand.
Xiaoyu carefully observed her surroundings. Seeing the demon beasts waiting in line being let through, she steadied her steps and walked forward.
The demon beast holding the iron hammer saw her and instantly looked fawning. “Please come in, Elder. Quickly, please come in.”
Xiaoyu was stunned, but immediately reacted, putting on a powerful demeanor and walking through.
Voices came from behind her:
“Which Elder is that? Her human form is exactly the same as a human’s.”
“If I hadn’t smelled the demon aura on her earlier, I would have thought she was a human.”
“She can transform to look exactly like a human. Which Demon Territory is she from?”
