The Female Lead of the Abusive Novel Can Hear My Heart's Voice - Chapter 20
The car stopped in front of the orphanage. The elderly director, this time supported by the petite Tang Tu, came out slowly. Seeing that Xia Mucai and Xia Chi had come especially to visit, she let out a sigh.
“Coming all the way out here… what for?” The director’s voice was like an old withered tree hoarse and lifeless.
She sighed again.
Xia Mucai walked over and supported the old woman, stating her reason for coming, “Xia Chi and I are here to rescue Tang Mingming. Mingming used to help support you, didn’t she? Now that she’s gone, who else in the orphanage can be your cane? You expect Tang Tu?”
Tang Tu was glaring at her angrily, and Xia Mucai guessed she was thinking something like, “I’m still young and haven’t fully grown yet.”
Scratching her face with one finger, she changed the subject, “Let’s go inside and talk.”
Under the ginkgo tree, the small stools were still arranged in a circle, just like last time. Xia Mucai helped the old director sit down and explained the situation. “Don’t worry, I’ve hired the best lawyer in Jiangcheng. We’ll take Mingming home with us. Once her parents’ issue is resolved, we’ll bring her back.”
But once again, she heard a long sigh. The old director grabbed her sleeve and shook her head. “People without shame are capable of anything. I’m afraid this might drag you and Xia Chi into trouble.”
Xia Chi also held the old woman’s hand and gently patted it. “Don’t worry, Mucai is reliable.”
“Is that so.”
Xia Mucai looked up at the sky and nodded, “Yeah, that’s right.”
She felt a little embarrassed that Xia Chi had called her reliable.
The old director, like a helpless child, asked again and again, confirming would this really not bring trouble to them?
Both of them answered in unison: “It won’t.”
Only then did the old woman finally relax her furrowed brow.
“Fine, fine,” she said, raising her cane and pointing in a direction. “Mingming is over there, at the end of the village.”
Xia Mucai and Xia Chi followed the direction the cane pointed in. From the orphanage, they could see a few households on the mountainside.
Unbelievable. Those people had watched their daughter grow up in the orphanage for over ten years without caring, and now they come rushing in to claim her when it’s convenient?
“Let the law deal with them. If you don’t want to raise a child, then don’t give birth. Abandoning a child is a crime,” Xia Mucai said angrily, wishing she could swallow those scumbags alive.
Xia Chi reached over to smooth her hair, and beside her ear came a calming voice, “Don’t be angry. Shall we go rescue Mingming now, or sneak in at night?”
Xia Mucai thought for a moment. She was a bossy, wicked heiress did she really need to sneak around?
“Let’s just go smash their door in.”
The person beside her agreed without hesitation. “Okay. I’m with you.”
Her hair was now smoothed down, and after a while, her anger finally subsided.
To outsiders, she looked just like a little kitten, curled up in her owner’s arms.
Needing to be petted by her owner to feel better after being upset.
If Tang Mingming weren’t in trouble right now, Tang Tu would’ve had to cover her mouth to keep from laughing.
See? I knew it. Summer-sister and Chi sister are totally into each other. They’re a perfect match.
Xia Chi shot Tang Tu a glance, silently telling her to mind her surroundings. Everyone else was tense, and she was there trying not to burst into laughter.
The little bunny made a zipping motion across her lips, promising Xia Chi she’d behave.
Xia Mucai didn’t notice any of this. All she knew was that she had to bring the trapped girl home.
Now, she could also be considered a member of the orphanage. Xia Chi treated this place as her home, so she would too.
Maybe it was the bond of their so-called sisterhood. Xia Chi had two homes why couldn’t she? She wanted that too.
Never realizing it wasn’t about being a “sister” it was because she liked Xia Chi and wanted to be part of her life and her family.
Before they left, the old director reminded them one last time: “You two be careful.”
Xia Mucai, who was half a demigod, had no fear of mere mortals. She held Xia Chi’s hand without realizing it. “Don’t worry. Wait for us to come back safe and sound.”
“Let’s go, Xia Chi.”
“Mm… okay.” Xia Chi was a little dazed, all she could think was Her hand is so soft… so nice to hold.
On the other side of town, dressed in a sharp black suit, Mo Qi arrived at the top law firm in Jiangcheng. The modest and grounded interior design reflected the professionalism of its lawyers. Anything flashy only felt like a scam.
The firm was located on the second floor of an old residential alley, operating for over ten years. Outside were luxury cars worth millions completely at odds with the building’s appearance.
That contrast was a testament to their true capability. No one questioned their legitimacy despite being based in an old neighborhood.
The moment she stepped into the stairwell, Mo Qi froze because someone very familiar was coming down from the second floor.
Without thinking, she murmured the name: “Gu Bai’an.”
The woman was dressed elegantly. Born into privilege, she now owned her own company and had become a powerful CEO.
They weren’t from the same world anymore Mo Qi knew that well.
Only pausing for a moment, she quickly pretended not to recognize her and tried to walk past.
But unexpectedly, a hand grabbed her, and a woman’s voice full of reproach sounded behind her.
“Mo Qi, you don’t recognize me anymore?”
Seriously? Pretending not to know her, and she still came up all clingy like this, making Mo Qi look like a cold, heartless jerk.
“Gu Bai’an, of course I recognize you. I’d recognize you even if you turned to ashes.”
The woman shamelessly acted like nothing had happened, as if they hadn’t once broken up badly, and began chatting like old friends.
“What are you doing here? Got time later? I’ll treat you to dinner.”
Mo Qi clearly remembered how she had been dumped how the woman had scolded her weak, selfish, living like a rotting corpse, unworthy of love. All because she lacked the courage to leave the country with her.
Back in the country now, what couldn’t find someone else overseas, so she came crawling back to her ex? Hoping she’d still be waiting around like a backup?
“No thanks. I need to get back to work,” Mo Qi rejected her coldly, not leaving a trace of warmth.
Gu Bai’an, still pestering, clung to Mo Qi’s arm affectionately. “Come on, come on, you can take a little time off. It’s been almost ten years since we last saw each other.”
“You think we’re close? We’re not even friends anymore,” Mo Qi replied, eyes ice cold.
The woman’s expression fell. Her delicate, pitiful face looked so hurt it was hard not to feel something.
Mo Qi bit her tongue, fighting back the urge to be weak, and yanked her hand free before walking straight up the stairs.
The breeze carried away the woman’s lingering scent. From that moment, the two became strangers once more.
[Don’t cling to me anymore. I’m not waiting for you for ten years.] Mo Qi told herself bitterly.
But in the ten years since, she hadn’t touched a single person. She’d tried to date, but nothing ever felt right. Something was always missing the comfort she only felt when Gu Bai’an was around.
Back on the street, the woman stomped her foot in frustration. “Mo Qi!”
She knew she was the one in the wrong all those years ago. Even after so long overseas, she hadn’t been with anyone else. Truthfully, she just couldn’t let Mo Qi go.
“You just wait. I’m not giving up.”
With the click clack of high heels echoing behind her, Mo Qi assumed the woman had left but didn’t expect her to climb into her car and sit herself down in the passenger seat.
When Mo Qi returned after her meeting, she opened the car door and found the woman sitting there, happily touching up her makeup.
Gu Bai’an snapped her compact shut with a crisp “click”, set down her lipstick, then turned her flirtatious eyes toward Mo Qi.
“How about dinner tonight?”
Mo Qi didn’t respond, just gave her a cold glance and silently drove them both to her office.
“You’re just being stubborn,” Gu Bai’an murmured, watching the scenery pass by, a smug smile on her lips.
“I don’t want to go to a restaurant anymore. How about a bar instead?”
Still no glance from Mo Qi. Her voice, cold as winter wind, cut through the air. “When did I ever say I’d eat with you? I’m not going anywhere tonight. I have work tomorrow.”
“You’ve changed, Mo Qi. You’re too cold now.”
Mo Qi gripped the steering wheel tightly, forcing back the pain. “A perfect ex should be like someone who’s died. Gu Bai’an, don’t come back into my life.”
“Then do you have a girlfriend now?” Gu Bai’an suddenly asked, changing the subject.
Who knew what she was plotting? Mo Qi hesitated before replying, “No.”
“Then how do you deal with your desires? You don’t tell me you handle everything yourself.”
Gu Bai’an said it like she’d been out with people though in truth, she hadn’t touched anyone either.
Mo Qi pulled over in a quiet, shaded area. The sun was already setting, and trees blocked out most of the remaining light.
Her voice was as sharp as wind on a mountain, “Get out.”
Just two words but it sent a chill through the summer air.
“Mo Qiii” Gu Bai’an cooed sweetly, entirely unfazed by the threat.
“Three. Two. One…” Mo Qi counted down, hoping to scare her off but instead, soft lips met hers.
It felt like waves crashing over her heart one after another, until all her emotions were stirred.
Somehow, Gu Bai’an had unbuckled herself and was now straddling Mo Qi’s lap, like a seductive fox stealing her soul, eager to feed.
For a moment, Mo Qi’s heart skipped a beat feeling herself fall for the woman again.
But then she reminded herself: Don’t be pathetic.
She opened her eyes and slapped Gu Bai’an hard across the face. Smack!
At the same time, her lip was bitten open, blood dripping.
Mo Qi glared. “Gu Bai’an, if you’re lonely, go find someone else to help you. Now get out!”
Her icy gaze finally pushed Gu Bai’an back. The woman slowly got off her lap, reluctant to let go.
She tried to say something else, calling Mo Qi’s name seductively.
“Out,” Mo Qi barked like she was kicking someone out of her house.
Unwillingly, Gu Bai’an got out and stood by the roadside. Before she could say “see you next time,” the car screeched away.
She was left there, standing in the wind, completely disheveled.
Only then did it hit her. Watching the car disappear into the distance, she muttered :
“Shit. I really pushed it too far this time.”
