The Female Lead of the Abusive Novel Can Hear My Heart's Voice - Chapter 19
Last time, a small cold had troubled Xia Mucai for a whole week. She hadn’t returned to the company to check on things during that time, feeling a bit worried inside. Luckily, the company had Mo Qi, a solid pillar to rely on.
Recalling the story, after the engagement banquet of the male and female leads, the male lead’s white moonlight (ex-girlfriend) returned to the country.
When Teng Jingsi saw the white moonlight return, he, like a sycophant, tried to prove in front of her that he had nothing to do with his fiancée, the female lead. He demeaned one woman in front of another.
Thinking of this, Xia Mucai couldn’t help but complain, “Does he really think everyone loves female rivalry like the original character?”
Anyway, Xia Mucai didn’t find anything in the original book’s words that suggested the white moonlight cared for Gu Bai’an (the female lead), or that she was pleased or excited to see the male lead insult the female lead.
She seemed more like a normal person, only a bit cold.
When Teng Jingsi insulted Xia Chi, Gu Bai’an was just watching a kind of performance art. She rolled her eyes at the man and left, leaving behind a dumbfounded Teng Jingsi and a hurt Xia Chi.
Just thinking about it made Xia Mucai angry. She clenched the corner of her blanket and gritted her teeth in frustration.
“Dumbass male lead! What kind of man bullies a kind female lead? If he wants to prove he doesn’t love Xia Chi, why not boldly call off the engagement? What’s with this petty childish behavior?”
With a creak, the door was pushed open. She was so angry her cheeks puffed up, and Xia Chi saw her like that.
Xia Chi held a bowl of porridge and looked at her in surprise.
Their eyes met, and in her heart, Xia Mucai thought: “Oh shit, Xia Chi doesn’t think I’ve gone crazy, does she?”
Most awkwardly, she even raised her hand to greet her, saying, “You’re here.”
Xia Chi didn’t know what to think either, gave a shy smile, softly responded with “Mm,” and nodded.
“What could Xia Mucai be thinking about? Is it something related to her?” Xia Chi wondered.
“I made you your favorite seafood porridge,” Xia Chi said.
Xia Mucai watched Xia Chi come closer and made space for her to sit.
The soft bed sagged in one spot as Xia Chi sat down.
Xia Mucai felt guilty and said, “I’m sorry to trouble you with taking care of me every day.”
Xia Chi gently stroked her head, smiling warmly. “What nonsense are you talking about? Just focus on recovering.”
Waaah, being cared for felt so good!
Xia Chi scooped some porridge with her spoon and scraped off the excess starchy rice water along the bowl’s edge.
“After taking one more dose of medicine today, you should be almost recovered. Don’t wash your hair next time and not blow dry it,” she teased.
Xia Mucai opened her mouth wide and ate the porridge, mumbling an explanation.
“I took a cold shower, it’s not because I didn’t blow-dry my hair.”
Xia Chi’s lips curled up slightly, teasing, “Why didn’t you wash with hot water, why cold water?”
Xia Mucai thought back to that morning. She had a steamy dream and felt unbearably hot all over, so she took a cold shower to cool down.
Suddenly, her face flushed red, and the heat returned to her body as the dream’s image surfaced in her mind.
She silently complained: “Do you want me to say I was dreaming about you in a steamy dream, so I took a cold shower because I was hot?”
How could she say something so shameless? What if she got mistaken for a crazy fangirl?
She nervously swallowed the porridge in her mouth and said, “I… I thought the weather was nice, so I took a cold shower. What’s wrong with that?”
Xia Chi, knowing the truth, was secretly delighted but didn’t tell Xia Mucai, acting like a kid sneaking candy.
Xia Mucai asked again, “What’s wrong with taking a cold shower?” Xia Chi answered calmly, “Nothing, it’s fine.”
The other side felt guilty, angry but couldn’t say anything, so she quickly changed the subject.
She thought: “She’s so cute. She must have feelings for me too.”
Unconsciously, Xia Chi’s eyes showed a glimmer of joy, even more than when she got accepted to the best university in Jiangcheng, escaping her fate.
Suddenly, a phone rang, breaking the silence between the two.
Xia Mucai picked up the phone from the bed and saw it was from the orphanage. Without thinking, she answered.
On the other end was a childish, tearful voice Tang Tu’s voice.
“Xia Xia sister, Tang Mingming was taken back by her biological parents.”
Xia Mucai thought, isn’t this good? If the parents found her, she wouldn’t have to live in the orphanage without parents.
“Isn’t that good? Why is little Tu crying?”
Only Xia Chi noticed something was wrong. She knew Tang Tu wasn’t the type to be clingy; kids get attached and let go quickly. Tang Mingming found her biological parents and would most likely be bringing good news, not crying.
Xia Mucai saw Xia Chi’s serious expression and knew there must be a reason. She put the call on speaker.
Tang Tu sobbed and stammered, “The… the director knew Mingming’s parents wanted to sell her to buy a house in the city for their son. She… she still let Mingming go with them.”
The parents who abandoned their own daughter in the cold snow beside a garbage bin were only thinking that the daughter still had some value.
Truly inhuman.
After hearing this, Xia Mucai clenched her fists, feeling injustice for Tang Mingming.
She comforted Tang Tu, “Don’t cry, I and your sister Xia Chi will come over soon.”
Tang Tu sobbed. When a child is helpless, she looks for someone reliable and trustworthy.
Although she had only met Xia Mucai once, she already trusted her completely.
The little Tu said a muffled “okay” and hung up.
After the brief busy tone, Xia Mucai looked at Xia Chi sitting by the bed, full of questions in her eyes.
Seeing this, Xia Chi began to explain.
“Tang Mingming is the one I picked up from the garbage bin and brought to the orphanage. The orphanage used to throw baby girls outside the door or even in the garbage bin to die.”
“Basically, when the girls grew up, their biological parents would recognize them and sell them to rich old men. The director is old and can’t fight them. She can’t just watch the girls die outside the door either. So she’s essentially giving those unreliable parents ten-plus years of free childcare.”
Xia Mucai was furious, cursing, “What beasts! They abandon the child for so many years, and then when they realize she’s useful, they come back to take her. Their scheme is obvious.”
“This kind of thing is hard to solve,” Xia Chi said, having seen too much and grown numb.
She was a goddess after all, and things that made Xia Mucai depressed were rare, but this was one.
A clear mind was needed to become a god.
She threw off the covers, full of fighting spirit, saying, “No matter what, we have to get Mingming back with us first. Don’t let her parents get their way.”
She hadn’t seen such shameless and tough people, but thinking about it, abandoning your own daughter and then shamelessly reclaiming her what a joke.
She understood Xia Chi’s despair over this case; she had seen many similar tragic endings.
But the sun was shining brightly Xia Mucai was like the morning sun, lighting up the lives of people like Xia Chi who lived in darkness.
Her whole being was full of energy, warmth, and comfort a little sun radiating heat at all times.
With such light shining on her, Xia Chi felt much stronger, infected by Xia Mucai’s vitality.
She gathered herself and firmly said, “Okay, we must get Mingming back.”
With Xia Chi’s words, it was like having a strong backing.
Xia Mucai smiled, her eyes shining as she put on slippers and picked up her phone to call Mo Qi.
With Mo Qi, the omniscient helper, the matter would be easier to handle.
Mo Qi said, “I really thank you.”
A call was made, and Xia Mucai was already in the garage preparing to drive out.
She told the person on the other end, “Mo Qi, I want you to prepare the best lawyer in Jiangcheng.”
The person on the other end didn’t ask why, simply replied crisply, “Okay, Vice President.”
Seeing Xia Mucai all fired up, Xia Chi suddenly thought of a phrase: “I won’t say a word until my lawyer arrives.”
She couldn’t help but laugh, covering her mouth.
The white Porsche’s headlights flashed in the garage.
Xia Chi sat in the driver’s seat, took the car keys handed by Xia Mucai, started the engine, and buckled up.
Why didn’t Xia Mucai drive? Because she was tired, and with a capable driver beside her, why bother?
Just like getting justice for Tang Mingming, they weren’t going to charge in blindly they had a lawyer lined up first.
Dealing with unreasonable people could only be done legally; she didn’t have time to go crazy with a lunatic.
Taking the easy way, she didn’t expect Xia Chi to admire her.
She didn’t know that in Xia Chi’s heart, Xia Mucai was a cute, safety-blanket-like lucky cat god—her soft side inviting a touch, her strong side making people want to cheer her on.
Completely adorable to Xia Chi.
Just as she was about to step on the gas and set off, the garage’s rolling door flipped open.
Outside stood Gao Jinghuan and a stranger the stranger was Gao Jinghuan’s half brother.
Xia Mucai froze, looking confused.
She turned to Xia Chi, asking, “What are they doing here?”
Xia Chi didn’t answer but looked cold and expressionless, her eyes as calm as frozen water.
They didn’t know what the two men were up to. This scene didn’t exist in the original story.
Soon, the stranger pressed Gao Jinghuan’s head down, making him bow and apologize. He bowed politely too a very courteous man.
Recalling a week ago, Gao Jinghuan, having done what a villainous supporting character should do trying to catch a lover but failing was forced by a wealthy lady to apologize to Xia Mucai in person.
Suddenly enlightened, Xia Mucai understood everything.
They had come to apologize.
As for sincerity, it was not bad most likely Gao Jinghuan’s brother forced him to come otherwise, he probably never would have apologized in his life.
Xia Mucai commented, “Gao Jinghuan’s brother has decent character.”
She didn’t know that when she said this, Xia Chi sitting beside her was very jealous.
Because Xia Mucai had never praised Xia Chi like this before.
Xia Chi didn’t say anything, just drove around the two men, sulking.
Her hand tapped the steering wheel rhythmically.
Suddenly, Xia Mucai spoke, “After this matter, I’ll give you my Vice President position.”
Her hand tightened on the wheel, and she coldly said, “Why?”
One moment jealous over a cat, the next moment interrupted by such a gloomy topic.
Why?
Xia Mucai explained, “N-no reason. I just prefer slacking off. Being Vice President isn’t interesting at all.”
Her eyes were full of guilt as she looked out the window.
Xia Chi didn’t doubt her and believed her.
“Alright. If I can help, I’m happy,” she said.
Xia Mucai breathed a sigh of relief and calmed down.
Because with the white moonlight’s arrival, the orphanage would be destroyed.
The male lead would threaten Xia Chi to give up a kidney or else burn down the orphanage.
All this was partly her fault the original character had told Teng Jingsi Xia Chi’s weakness, which led to Xia Chi losing her closest family in this world, and falling into despair.
Xia Mucai didn’t want to see this but was helpless.
Her mission was to make the female lead’s life miserable.
