The Female Lead is Quite Unusual - Episode 31
Lin Wan’s bed was an ordinary single bed, which of course couldn’t compare to the luxurious one in Bai Yin’s home, but it was more than enough for two slender girls to sleep on.
Bai Yin hadn’t brought any pajamas with her, so Lin Wan lent her a spare set she had brought back.
Though Bai Yin appeared extremely slender, Lin Wan’s clothes on her exuded a graceful charm.
Seeing the faint outline of her waist peeking from under the hem of the clothes, Lin Wan didn’t know why, but she couldn’t bring herself to look again after just one glance.
That night, perhaps because she felt at ease, Lin Wan quickly grew drowsy. However, Bai Yin, who usually slept in a proper posture and had a serene sleeping face, seemed restless, tossing and turning several times.
“What’s wrong, Yin Yin?”
Lin Wan, growing increasingly sleepy, couldn’t help but yawn as she asked.
At that moment, the two were very close, and Lin Wan’s breath lightly brushed against Bai Yin’s ear, sending a tingling sensation through her.
Bai Yin’s body noticeably stiffened, and it took a while before she spoke in a hoarse voice.
“It’s nothing.”
Lin Wan didn’t pay it much mind.
Her drowsiness surged, her consciousness gradually fading, and she couldn’t resist falling asleep.
However, not long after, Lin Wan was awakened again by Bai Yin’s tossing and turning.
Thinking about it, such a small bed was a bit of a hardship for the delicate young lady. She probably had never slept on such a poor bed in her life.
Lin Wan sighed softly, her mind half-awake, attributing it all to Bai Yin’s unfamiliarity with the bed.
In her daze, she turned over and, like cradling a baby, pulled Bai Yin into her arms, casually ruffling her hair as she spoke sleepily, “Yin Yin, sleep now. I’m here.”
Bai Yin seemed caught off guard by her actions and tried to struggle, but Lin Wan tightened her grip, holding Bai Yin’s head in place, and patted her back gently. “Yin Yin, don’t fuss. Go to sleep.”
If Lin Wan were fully awake, she would never have done something that might hurt the delicate young lady’s pride.
But at that moment, Lin Wan was simply too exhausted. All she wanted was to soothe Bai Yin and get a good night’s sleep, so she couldn’t help but act that way.
Bai Yin’s body stiffened like a wooden doll at that instant.
She allowed Lin Wan to hold her against her chest, her face flushing bright red. Even as Lin Wan drifted back to sleep, Bai Yin didn’t break free from her embrace.
The night was quiet and peaceful, time flowing by bit by bit.
Who knows how much time passed when, in the stillness of the room, a voice suddenly spoke through gritted teeth, “Lin Wan, you really…”
The clock in the room ticked, as if in response, waiting for her to continue.
But after a long while, the voice never uttered another word.
The night passed without dreams.
Lin Wan slept extremely soundly.
The next morning, when Lin Wan woke up, Bai Yin was already awake and tying her hair in front of the mirror.
Bai Yin had already tied her hair into a high ponytail, revealing her flawless facial contours.
She usually wore her hair down, but now, with it tied up, she looked even more lively, exactly like the campus belle from a youth school drama.
“Yesterday, Grandma said you look good with your hair tied up, and today you actually did it.”
Lin Wan lay on the bed, propping her chin in her hands as she watched Bai Yin style her hair. She felt that Bai Yin’s beauty was something she could never tire of admiring and couldn’t help but say, “Yin Yin, I didn’t expect you to listen to Grandma so obediently.”
Bai Yin slowly tied her hairband, then lifted her gaze to glance at her. For some reason, whatever she saw made Bai Yin’s eyes darken, and she abruptly turned her head away.
Lin Wan thought Bai Yin was feeling shy and quickly suppressed the smile on her face, trying to smooth things over.
“Yin Yin, in my eyes, you always look beautiful. You look lovely with your hair down, and just as lovely with it tied up like a fresh-faced high school girl just after graduation.”
To boost Bai Yin’s confidence, Lin Wan was used to showering her with sweet words, and compliments came easily to her now.
In the past, every time Lin Wan praised her, Bai Yin would lower her head, happy yet bashful. But this time, something seemed off.
“I’m not a little girl.”
It was unclear which words had upset Bai Yin, but she responded in a low voice, her tone strained and slightly hoarse, her eyes still refusing to meet Lin Wan’s.
“Lin Wan, you’re not that much older than me either.”
Here it comes.
The young lady’s sudden competitive streak and pride.
Whenever Bai Yin got angry with Lin Wan, she would call her by her full name.
Lin Wan sighed inwardly, unable to understand why Bai Yin was suddenly being difficult, but she smoothly played along: “I know, Yin Yin, you handle things thoughtfully and meticulously. In some ways, you’re even more mature and experienced than I am.”
Usually, by this point, the matter would be dropped.
But today, for some reason, Bai Yin’s voice grew even hoarser, tinged with a strange impatience: “Lin Wan, don’t treat me like a child!”
Bai Yin was truly acting out of character today. It seemed she was holding back a surge of anger, wanting to pick a fight but unsure how to start.
Lin Wan blinked, thinking that this seriously angry version of Bai Yin was rather cute. Still, she didn’t want Bai Yin to stay upset for fear it might affect her health. After a moment’s thought, Lin Wan decided to change the subject.
She would find something to ease Bai Yin’s mood first, then properly coax her later.
“Yin Yin, I’ll go fetch some water for you. You freshen up first, and we can chat after breakfast.” Lin Wan quickly found a way to soothe Bai Yin’s temper.
She climbed out of bed, yawned, and was about to head out to get water when Bai Yin’s voice suddenly came from behind: “Lin Wan!”
This time, Bai Yin’s voice was loud, carrying a hint of gritted teeth.
Startled, Lin Wan halted and turned to look at Bai Yin.
But Bai Yin wasn’t looking at her.
She wheeled her chair over to the bed, found Lin Wan’s jacket, and tossed it at her as if venting her frustration.
“Butler Zhao is already awake. It wouldn’t be appropriate for you to go out like that.”
As she spoke, it seemed the act of throwing the jacket had released some of the pent-up anger inside her, and Bai Yin’s tone sounded much calmer.
With Bai Yin’s words, it was now Lin Wan’s turn to blush.
Her uncle rarely visited, and with only her grandmother at home most of the time, Lin Wan hadn’t paid much attention to her attire, usually dressing in comfortable, casual clothes.
If Bai Yin hadn’t reminded her, Lin Wan might have wandered out in her pajamas right in front of Butler Zhao.
Thankfully, Bai Yin had spoken up.
But Bai Yin really was observant.
“Thank you, Yin Yin.”
Grateful, Lin Wan glanced at Bai Yin, not overthinking it, slipped on her jacket, and headed out.
After finishing her own morning routine, she squeezed toothpaste and poured water for Bai Yin. Just as she was about to carry the basin over to Bai Yin, Lin Wan caught sight of her crumpled collar in the mirror.
She straightened her collar, and suddenly, a hazy memory from the previous night flashed through her mind.
She had been so exhausted that, irritated by Bai Yin’s constant tossing and turning, she had pressed Bai Yin’s head against her chest, wrapping herself around Bai Yin like an octopus, refusing to let go, stubbornly determined to keep Bai Yin from moving again.
That posture, it was exactly how one holds a child!
Recalling the events of the night, Lin Wan felt as if struck by lightning, freezing in place.
No wonder her collar was so wrinkled, and no wonder Bai Yin had been so angry this morning. Lin Wan didn’t know how to judge her own muddle-headed actions and wished she could travel back in time to slap herself twice.
How could she have done such a thing to the shy and timid Bai Yin!
Thankfully, Bai Yin had a gentle temper, hadn’t made a big deal out of it, and was still willing to interact with her.
…
Lin Wan’s face instantly flushed bright red. Even splashing cold water on it several times couldn’t cool the heat in her cheeks. She had no idea how to face Bai Yin.
It wasn’t until Bai Yin sent a “?” via text that Lin Wan took a deep breath, picked up the toiletries, and returned to the room.
Clearly, Bai Yin had already let the matter go, which was why she had reached out. If Lin Wan brought it up again, Bai Yin might get upset all over again.
Lin Wan didn’t dare mention it again. She had intended to act as if nothing had happened in front of Bai Yin, but her conscience wasn’t thick enough. Haunted by guilt, she didn’t dare speak to Bai Yin all day.
Occasionally, she would sneak glances at Bai Yin, but it was as if Bai Yin had eyes in the back of her head. She would be caught immediately, forcing Lin Wan to hurriedly lower her gaze.
Fortunately, Grandma was very talkative and fond of Bai Yin, so she kept Bai Yin engaged in conversation all day, preventing the atmosphere from becoming too awkward.
After a hearty lunch, Lin Wan carried the snacks Grandma had prepared and got into the car heading to the villa.
This time, Grandma didn’t cling to Lin Wan with reluctant reminders. Instead, her attention was entirely on Bai Yin.
“Yin Yin, you must come visit again when you have time!”
“Our Wanwan’s temper has improved a lot over the years, but she can still be as stubborn as a mule sometimes. If she does anything wrong, Yin Yin, you tell me, and I’ll set her straight.”
Bai Yin, however, shed the sulky demeanor she’d shown Lin Wan that morning, replying with a sweet, well-behaved smile, “Wanwan treats me very well. She’s my best friend. Don’t worry, Grandma. Next time I have a chance, I’ll definitely come back with Wanwan.”
Perhaps because she had been overwhelmed with shame and distraction all day, Lin Wan suddenly felt a strange sensation watching this scene: it really seemed like a mother-in-law sending off her daughter and son-in-law on a journey.
But she didn’t dare dwell on it, because just then, the driver wheeled Bai Yin over.
Not wanting to see Bai Yin struggle to get into the car, Lin Wan hurriedly stood up to help. However, she didn’t use enough strength and failed to steady Bai Yin, who ended up falling against her.
Lin Wan was fine, but Bai Yin’s hand hit the ground. Lin Wan clearly heard Bai Yin gasp in pain.
Lin Wan quickly helped Bai Yin sit up properly.
Meeting Bai Yin’s clear, unruffled gaze, Lin Wan’s guilt deepened. She rolled up Bai Yin’s sleeve to check, and a distinct bruise stood out starkly against the snow-white skin.
Though the injury wasn’t particularly severe, the knowledge that Bai Yin had been hurt because of her made Lin Wan’s remorse grow even heavier.
She carefully asked the driver for a simple first-aid kit and began applying medicine to Bai Yin’s wound while mentally rehearsing how to apologize. She had realized that if she didn’t say sorry, she would feel unsettled all day.
However, Bai Yin seemed to know what she was thinking and spoke first, cutting off her prepared words.
“You don’t need to apologize.”
Bai Yin lowered her eyes slightly, as if pondering something, her lips pressed into a tight line.
“There are some things I need to sort out right now.”
“But I’m not one to make a losing deal.”
“Wanwan, what you owe me I’ll come to collect it myself someday.”
