The Female Lead is Quite Unusual - Episode 27
Lin Wan slowly climbed into bed.
The rain pattered against the window frame, echoing her chaotic and anxious state of mind.
After pulling the covers over herself, Lin Wan closed her eyes like an ostrich burying its head in the sand, her face flushed bright red. She could only be grateful that the lights were off, so Bai Yin couldn’t see her flustered appearance.
Bai Yin trusted her so much and saw her as a symbol of safety. If she acted too shy, it would ruin the image Bai Yin had of her.
Outside, lightning flashed and thunder rumbled, but inside the room, it was extremely quiet. In a daze, Lin Wan could even hear Bai Yin’s soft, shallow breathing beside her.
Lin Wan had originally thought that the one who would struggle to adjust would be Bai Yin. She herself usually slept very soundly and might fall asleep as soon as she touched the bed, helping Bai Yin feel sleepy too.
However, plans never keep up with changes. For once, Lin Wan found herself unable to sleep.
Her mind replayed the events of the evening like a revolving lantern. She didn’t know why she had so naturally acted spoiled in front of Bai Yin. She wasn’t usually like this. When faced with difficulties or mistakes, she would try to overcome them herself rather than acting coy with someone else.
But in front of Bai Yin, she couldn’t help but let her guard down and do things that even surprised herself.
After thinking it over carefully, Lin Wan felt it was probably because she had already accepted Bai Yin in her heart.
In this small villa, she and Bai Yin were actually the same kind of people: she was adrift in a foreign world, alone and helpless, while Bai Yin’s family might as well not exist. They only wanted to seize her assets and paid her no attention.
Bai Yin was so fragile and yet so considerate toward her. It was only natural that Lin Wan would instinctively see Bai Yin as her closest companion and want to protect her.
With these thoughts, Lin Wan shed the awkwardness she had felt after acting spoiled earlier. Carefully, she reached out a hand and grasped Bai Yin’s hand under the covers.
To Lin Wan’s surprise, when she touched Bai Yin’s hand, Bai Yin’s fingers trembled noticeably. But as if afraid this reaction might hurt Lin Wan, she immediately tightened her grip in return.
Perhaps out of nervousness, Bai Yin’s grip was very strong. For a moment, Lin Wan felt as though her hand bones were about to be crushed. Bai Yin’s body seemed to be trembling faintly too.
Lin Wan’s heart swelled with pity, reaching its peak in an instant.
Bai Yin really hadn’t fallen asleep.
So, she still wasn’t used to it after all!
She was probably afraid that showing resistance would hurt Lin Wan, so she had been enduring her discomfort all along.
“Yin Yin, if you’re not comfortable, you can tell me directly. I’m actually feeling a bit better now and not as scared of the thunderstorm,” Lin Wan whispered, retracting her earlier excuse. She patted Bai Yin’s hand soothingly and said, “I can go back to my room to sleep.”
“Besides, we’re good friends, and I’m also your employee. You actually have the right to be willful in front of me. I hope you can feel more at ease.”
“No matter what, we’ll always be the best of friends.”
Perhaps the darkness gave her courage. Lin Wan wasn’t usually a talkative person, but for some reason, when facing Bai Yin, she couldn’t help but want to say more.
Bai Yin didn’t speak.
Lin Wan wasn’t disheartened. Many things couldn’t be accomplished overnight, and she didn’t expect to change Bai Yin’s personality in such a short time.
She had come to coax Bai Yin to sleep; if she ended up making Bai Yin even more sleepless, it would be counterproductive.
She could think of other methods slowly in the future.
Lin Wan sighed inwardly, released Bai Yin’s hand, and tried to sit up quietly to leave. But just then, Bai Yin suddenly took a deep breath, tightened her grip on Lin Wan’s hand, and intertwined their fingers.
Immediately after, Bai Yin turned over, nestled into Lin Wan’s embrace, and wrapped her arms tightly around Lin Wan’s waist.
“I’m just too happy.”
Bai Yin spoke softly in the darkness, her voice growing increasingly hoarse, as if she was struggling to hold something back. “Wanwan, I’m really glad you consider me a good friend.”
Bai Yin’s body was still trembling slightly, and her hands holding Lin Wan continued to shake. Despite that, as if to prove her words were sincere, she held Lin Wan even tighter, squeezing her so hard that Lin Wan nearly lost her breath.
Lin Wan inexplicably felt that Bai Yin was like a child clinging tightly to a toy, seemingly afraid that she might run away.
“Me too.”
Lin Wan sighed, smiled helplessly, and deliberately exaggerated her tone: “Yin Yin, loosen your grip a little. I can hardly breathe!”
Bai Yin’s hands stiffened for a moment before loosening slightly, but as if afraid Lin Wan would escape, she never let go completely.
She really is like a child.
Lin Wan sighed, her maternal instincts surging to their peak in that moment.
“Why are you acting like such a kid?”
Lin Wan turned over, reached out, and gently patted Bai Yin’s shoulder, unable to resist a teasing tone: “Don’t worry, I won’t leave…”
As she patted Bai Yin’s shoulder, Bai Yin’s trembling gradually subsided.
But Bai Yin didn’t release her hold on Lin Wan’s waist. Instead, she leaned closer, nuzzling gently against Lin Wan’s neck, her voice so hoarse it was almost unrecognizable.
“I’m so happy, Wanwan.”
It seemed the night had given Bai Yin courage, allowing her to finally reveal her true feelings: “Wanwan, I actually wish you would come to stay with me every day.”
“Being by your side makes me incredibly happy. But I feel like that’s asking too much of you, so I never dared to tell you. I was afraid you’d dislike me.”
It sounded like she was acting spoiled.
But her voice carried a distinct laziness, like a wild beast savoring the afterglow of a full meal. Perhaps it was the night playing tricks, but Lin Wan felt a fleeting sense that Bai Yin exuded a strange yet familiar aura, both seductive and dangerous.
Lin Wan suddenly felt a chill run down her spine.
She instinctively touched her back and found a gap in the blanket. Dismissing it as nothing, she pulled the blanket tighter and continued soothing Bai Yin, whispering a promise.
“Don’t worry, as long as it helps you sleep better, I’ll come to stay with you every day.”
“Really?”
Bai Yin nuzzled against Lin Wan’s neck again, like a small animal, let out a soft yawn, and her voice immediately sounded drowsy “I’m actually feeling a bit sleepy now.”
“Then go to sleep!”
Lin Wan chuckled inwardly, amused that Bai Yin was pretending to be well-behaved. The more she interacted with her, the more endearing Bai Yin seemed.
Pretending not to notice Bai Yin’s act, Lin Wan patted her shoulder gently, as if soothing a child, and began humming a soft, tuneless lullaby.
This was a lullaby from her own world, specifically used to soothe babies. Lin Wan didn’t dare use the lullabies of this world, afraid that the delicate young lady would throw a tantrum.
“Goodnight, Wanwan.”
Amid Lin Wan’s anxiety, Bai Yin’s breathing gradually evened out.
Lin Wan wasn’t sure if Bai Yin was truly asleep.
She slowly stopped humming the song and softly called out “Yin Yin.” Seeing no response from Bai Yin, she cautiously moved Bai Yin’s arm, which was wrapped around her waist.
Bai Yin seemed to subconsciously sense something, murmuring softly before wrapping her arm back around.
In the darkness of the night, Lin Wan breathed a sigh of relief and curved her lips into a smile.
If Bai Yin had let her move her arm away, she would have suspected Bai Yin wasn’t asleep. But this stubborn, toy-clutching-like reaction was something Bai Yin probably wouldn’t do while awake. Bai Yin must truly be fast asleep.
After a long, exhausting night, the thunder and lightning outside had also ceased at some point.
The night was tranquil.
With her worries eased, Lin Wan soon drifted into sleep as well.
She seemed to hear a soft chuckle, then had a strange dream.
In the dream, she had turned into a white rabbit, caught by a lion. The lion didn’t eat her but instead treated her like a toy, kneading and shaping her as it pleased.
In the dream, she kept running, escaping many times, only to be caught by the lion again and again.
Finally, she stopped trying to flee and resigned herself to her fate, lying still like a salted fish. The lion, however, laughed softly, lowered its noble head, and rubbed its cheek against hers as if bestowing a favor, leaving a mark on her forehead.
When Lin Wan woke the next morning, she felt as if she were in a furnace.
After a night of heavy rain, the sun had emerged outside.
The warm, gentle sunlight filtered through the screen window by the glass pane, casting a hazy, vibrant glow over the entire room.
Lin Wan lowered her gaze and found Bai Yin clinging to her like an octopus.
Beneath the covers, Bai Yin’s movements were rather bold, but her sleeping face above the quilt was utterly innocent. A petite face with delicate, flawless skin, tightly closed eyes, and long, thick lashes, like a slumbering angel.
Bai Yin truly lived up to being the female lead of this world!
Lin Wan couldn’t help but marvel once again at Bai Yin’s beauty.
Afraid that moving would wake Bai Yin, Lin Wan didn’t dare stir, lying stiffly on the bed with her back straight. As she gazed at the sleeping Bai Yin, her thoughts began to wander.
Actually, spending a lifetime like this with Bai Yin didn’t seem so bad.
In her original plan, she would become friends with Bai Yin by showering her with meticulous care, protecting and helping her, ensuring Bai Yin lived a happy life. She had never imagined she would one day share a bed with Bai Yin.
But this kind of close friendship could better protect Bai Yin, especially since Bai Yin was so delicate and fragile.
Filled with tender affection, Lin Wan couldn’t resist reaching out to brush aside the hair on Bai Yin’s cheek. But Bai Yin suddenly opened her eyes, and their gazes met.
“Good morning, Wanwan!”
As soon as Bai Yin recognized Lin Wan, her eyes immediately lit up with a smile, and she spoke first.
Lin Wan didn’t know why, but even though Bai Yin was the one who should have been embarrassed, meeting Bai Yin’s gaze made Lin Wan’s cheeks flush, and she suddenly grew a bit flustered and stammered.
“G-good morning.”
Before she could react, she rolled off the bed and stood by the edge. Seeing Bai Yin’s pursed lips and downcast eyes, Lin Wan belatedly realized that Bai Yin might have misunderstood. Thinking her movement was out of aversion. Hastily, she stretched out her arms to make amends.
“I’ll carry you to the wheelchair.”
“Thank you, Wanwan.”
A smile returned to Bai Yin’s eyes as she naturally wrapped her arms around Lin Wan’s neck, leaning close to her ear and whispering, “Thanks to you, I haven’t slept this well in a long time.”
Hearing Bai Yin’s words, Lin Wan’s flustered irritation from the sudden closeness instantly vanished. Her mood lifted, and she couldn’t help but smile.
“I’ll keep helping you from now on. You’ll sleep even better and grow healthier.”
Bai Yin rarely expressed her true feelings, so Lin Wan naturally wanted to encourage her.
“I believe you, Wanwan.”
Bai Yin’s beautiful eyes fixed intently on Lin Wan’s smiling face, and she smiled in return.
In a soft voice, her usually indifferent eyes now held a trace of longing for the first time.
“Let’s stay healthy together and grow old side by side.”
