The Female Lead is Quite Unusual - Episode 26
Time passed quickly, and Lin Wan’s hand soon healed.
During this period, even though her hand was injured, Lin Wan still stuck to Bai Yin’s side every day to solidify her position by her side.
The more she interacted with Bai Yin, the more Lin Wan realized how truly innocent she was. Bai Yin often blushed easily, and once she accepted someone, she would listen to everything that person said.
Moreover, Lin Wan made a surprising discovery: Bai Yin seemed unable to resist someone acting spoiled.
As long as Lin Wan whined a little, Bai Yin would agree to almost anything, even if it made her feel uncomfortable.
It all started with Lin Wan sending Bai Yin a “tucking in” sticker.
After Lin Wan “tucked her in,” Bai Yin seemed to have saved the sticker and sent it back to Lin Wan the next night before bed.
At first, Lin Wan was puzzled when she received it, unsure whether Bai Yin wanted her to tuck her in or if Bai Yin wanted to tuck her in. So, Lin Wan simply replied.
“I’ll be right over.”
She had originally planned to ask Bai Yin in person.
When she arrived at Bai Yin’s room, she found her sitting in front of the bookshelf, seemingly searching for something.
Seeing Lin Wan, Bai Yin pulled out a book from the shelf and handed it to her, her dark eyes fixed unblinkingly on her. “Can you read to me for half an hour before bed?”
Lin Wan blinked.
She suddenly realized Bai Yin’s true intention.
Bai Yin was a very methodical person. If she had wanted Lin Wan to come over, she would have already washed up and changed into her pajamas.
But Bai Yin was still in her loungewear, not at all dressed for bed. Clearly, she hadn’t called Lin Wan over to be tucked in. She wanted to return the favor and tuck Lin Wan in.
Perhaps afraid Lin Wan would feel awkward, she had come up with the idea of reading on the spot.
What a polite, delicate young lady!
Lin Wan’s eyes flickered as she couldn’t help but marvel inwardly.
But Lin Wan, who was perfectly capable of moving around on her own, naturally wouldn’t agree to let Bai Yin. This delicate young lady in a wheelchair, come over to tuck her in. So she pretended not to notice Bai Yin’s intention, took the book, and readily agreed.
“Wait a moment, I’ll go change into my pajamas,” Bai Yin said after staring at Lin Wan for a while, then turned and went into the bathroom.
As if afraid of keeping Lin Wan waiting, Bai Yin moved quickly and soon emerged from the bathroom in her wheelchair, making her way to the bed.
Watching Bai Yin move across the room, Lin Wan recalled how difficult it had been for her to get into bed the night before, and her heart ached unbearably.
“Yin-Yin, don’t be afraid!”
Taking a deep breath, Lin Wan simply reached out and picked Bai Yin up.
“Yin-Yin,” she said, acting swiftly to prevent Bai Yin from resisting. Meeting Bai Yin’s stunned gaze, Lin Wan deliberately softened her tone, even changing how she addressed Bai Yin to make her words more convincing. “I think of you as my best friend. I just want to help you so badly that I can’t bear to see you struggle like this…”
“Don’t worry, I’ll never tell anyone.”
Bai Yin’s eyes widened in shock, her pupils clear and innocent, giving her the look of a small, vulnerable animal.
For a moment, under that gaze, Lin Wan suddenly felt a pang of guilt. She might have taken advantage of Bai Yin’s kindness, acting a little too recklessly.
Was she hurting Bai Yin’s pride by doing this?
Lin Wan suddenly felt a bit uncertain in her heart.
Bai Yin’s reaction dispelled her doubts.
Bai Yin’s beautiful eyelashes fluttered lightly, like the wings of a butterfly, and a faint blush visibly rose on her cheeks.
“Mhm.”
Bai Yin responded softly, then immediately lowered her eyes and reached out to wrap her arms around Lin Wan’s neck, as if in reliance.
So Bai Yin was just shy!
As long as she wasn’t angry, it was fine.
Lin Wan sighed in relief, pretending not to notice Bai Yin’s bashfulness, and gently placed her on the bed.
She was just about to go outside to fetch a stool when Bai Yin suddenly tugged at the hem of her clothes, signaling her to sit on the bed instead.
Since Bai Yin, with her usual fastidiousness, didn’t mind, Lin Wan didn’t say anything more and sat down at the head of the bed.
Lin Wan turned off the main light in the room and switched on the bedside lamp, adjusting its direction so the light wouldn’t shine directly on Bai Yin, then began reading softly.
As she read, Lin Wan observed Bai Yin’s reactions.
Bai Yin looked truly well-behaved.
Her face still carried a lingering blush, her skin so delicate it seemed as if it could be pierced with a breath. Even though Lin Wan knew Bai Yin was taller than her when standing, having grown accustomed to seeing her in a wheelchair, the Bai Yin curled up under the blankets appeared tiny in her eyes.
Bai Yin seemed to have fallen asleep, her breathing light and even.
Lin Wan gazed at her, her eyes growing increasingly tender. She hadn’t expected to earn Bai Yin’s trust so quickly after arriving in this world. Ultimately, it was because Bai Yin lacked enough experience with human nature, making it easy for her to accept Lin Wan.
This kind and sensible girl had endured far too much suffering in her life. By fate’s design, Lin Wan had come to her side. Though her motives weren’t entirely pure, she was determined to protect Bai Yin.
Even though she thought Bai Yin was already asleep and likely couldn’t hear her reading anymore, Lin Wan continued for the full half-hour before finally stopping.
“Goodnight.”
She spoke softly, turned off the bedside lamp, and was about to tiptoe out when Bai Yin’s voice suddenly came from the darkness.
“Goodnight!”
Bai Yin hadn’t been asleep?
Lin Wan blinked, a flicker of curiosity passing through her mind, but she didn’t dwell on it. Instead, she whispered, “See you tomorrow, sweet dreams,” before leaving Bai Yin’s room.
The next day, worried that Bai Yin might still think about covering her with a blanket in the future, Lin Wan decided to put an end to the idea once and for all. During their meal together, she brought it up directly.
“Miss, how about I come to read to you every night?”
Noticing the confusion in Bai Yin’s eyes, Lin Wan offered the excuse she’d prepared “I’ve been recovering from my injuries lately, with nothing to do all day. I rest so much during the day that I can’t sleep at night. But after reading to you last night, I slept much better.”
“Is that so?”
Bai Yin lowered her head, seemingly a little embarrassed, but a happy smile spread across her face. “Me too. I sleep more soundly when you’re by my side.”
But Bai Yin had been awake when she left last night.
Lin Wan blinked, not entirely convinced by Bai Yin’s claim of “sleeping soundly.” If Bai Yin had truly been resting peacefully, how could she have noticed Lin Wan leaving?
Still, since she’d achieved her goal, Lin Wan didn’t argue. Instead, she simply kept a closer eye on Bai Yin during their interactions, observing her more carefully.
This observation made Lin Wan’s heart heavy. she noticed that Bai Yin seemed to have a habit of light sleep.
Unlike Lin Wan, who often took afternoon naps, Bai Yin rarely rested at noon. Whenever Lin Wan was asleep, Bai Yin was always awake.
At night, when Lin Wan read to Bai Yin, she quietly tested this a few times. Suddenly calling out Bai Yin’s name mid-reading, but Bai Yin never responded.
However, the moment Lin Wan stopped reading and stood up to return to her room, no matter how softly she moved, Bai Yin would always notice.
After confirming Bai Yin’s lack of sleep, Lin Wan grew even more concerned.
With such poor sleep quality, no wonder Bai Yin always seemed so downcast, as if she had little interest in anything.
If this continued, her health would surely suffer.
“Yin Yin, has your sleep always been this bad?”
Over the past few days, Lin Wan had grown accustomed to calling her “Yin Yin.” Seeing that Bai Yin didn’t object and even occasionally called her “Wanwan” in return, Lin Wan continued using the affectionate nickname.
Once she confirmed Bai Yin’s terrible sleep quality, Lin Wan decided to confront her directly.
“It used to be worse than now, but it’s gotten a little better recently,” Bai Yin replied, offering Lin Wan a faint smile. “Thanks to you.”
This was considered better?
How bad must Bai Yin’s sleep have been before?
“Why thanks to me?”
Lin Wan widened her eyes, utterly confused. What did Bai Yin’s sleep have to do with her?
“Because you saved me in the woods that day!”
Bai Yin seemed a little embarrassed as she lowered her head and explained, “Lately, I’ve felt really at ease when I’m with you. When you’re around, I can actually fall asleep.”
“That’s why I specifically asked you to come read to me.”
“Did I cause you any trouble?”
Bai Yin looked up, her eyes tinged with apology.
“Not at all!”
Lin Wan snapped out of her surprise and answered immediately.
She had never expected this answer, but upon reflection, it made sense. Ever since returning from Songhe Villa, Bai Yin had grown much closer to her.
As an orphan with no close relatives to confide in, and with only the male butler, Mr. Zhao, around, Bai Yin truly had no one else to rely on but her.
At that moment, Lin Wan’s sense of responsibility surged to its peak. She was determined to help Bai Yin overcome her insomnia!
“I’m glad you trust me.”
“But isn’t there any other way to improve your sleep?” Lin Wan asked worriedly. “With such poor quality, how can your body endure this in the long run?”
“It’s fine.”
Bai Yin remained as gentle as ever, smiling softly. “With you here every day, I can at least sleep well for half an hour. I’m already very grateful.”
“We’ll find a solution together.” Though Bai Yin seemed content, Lin Wan couldn’t bear to see her suffer like this any longer. She impulsively grasped Bai Yin’s hand. “I’ll definitely help you.”
In the following days, Lin Wan scoured for materials on treating insomnia. However, the causes of sleeplessness were far too numerous, with many stemming from psychological factors. Given Bai Yin’s current state, altering her mental condition seemed nearly impossible.
The situation appeared to have reached a deadlock.
In the following days, Lin Wan persistently read books to Bai Yin, hoping to help her sleep more. Unable to resist, Lin Wan gradually extended the reading time from half an hour to an hour, and even longer.
As expected, Bai Yin hadn’t been lying. Whenever Lin Wan read to her, she slept soundly, completely unaware of the passage of time.
Tonight was a stormy night, with thunder and lightning flashing outside the window.
“Has another half hour passed?”
“Wanwan, goodnight.”
While Lin Wan was reading, despite the constant thunder outside, Bai Yin seemed oblivious to the noise. It wasn’t until Lin Wan was about to leave that Bai Yin woke again, her voice thick with drowsiness as she spoke to Lin Wan.
Lin Wan had intended to leave, but hearing Bai Yin’s voice, she suddenly paused. A thought flashed through her mind like lightning.
Bai Yin relied on her so much. If she slept beside Bai Yin, perhaps Bai Yin wouldn’t wake up startled anymore?
Lin Wan’s heart raced with excitement. The more she thought about it, the more feasible the plan seemed.
But Bai Yin, a wealthy young lady raised with elite upbringing, had probably never shared a bed with anyone before. And given her kind nature, she likely wouldn’t feel comfortable letting Lin Wan sleep beside her just to help with her insomnia.
How could she persuade Bai Yin to agree?
Lin Wan tightened her grip on the book in her hands, watching the raging storm outside, when an idea suddenly struck her.
Even if the excuse sounded flimsy, it was worth a try!
“Yin Yin, can I ask you a favor?” The darkness gave Lin Wan courage. Softening her voice and feigning a sob, she whispered, “I’m actually really scared of thunderstorms. Could I sleep with you tonight?”
Silence.
Lin Wan pressed her lips together, feeling her face grow warm.
She knew Bai Yin was awake, but in a way, Bai Yin’s silence spoke volumes about her stance.
Lin Wan bit her lower lip, regret filling her heart. She was about to pretend nothing had happened and leave the room when Bai Yin’s slightly hoarse voice suddenly broke through the night.
“Okay.”
