- Chapter 2 - Have You Ever Regretted It?
“Have you ever regretted it?”
The following day, Qin Huai woke up in bed.
His whole body ached as if his bones were falling apart, and even opening his eyes felt like a monumental effort.
He looked down at his body, which was covered in red marks, and was startled.
After escaping from the suite yesterday, he only remembered bumping into a man. Everything that happened afterward was a total blank.
Qin Huai subconsciously touched the back of his neck. The scent blocker was still there, but his gland had not finished swelling down and felt faintly painful to the touch.
Thankfully, I was not marked, Qin Huai thought, letting out a sudden sigh of relief.
Shortly after, Shen Yuzhi walked in carrying a gift bag.
When Qin Huai saw Shen Yuzhi’s face clearly, his breathing became labored, and he felt as if his heart had stopped beating.
After all these years, he never expected to meet him again, let alone in such a manner.
“Hanzhou?”
The name escaped his lips subconsciously.
Shen Yuzhi did not respond. He tossed the gift bag onto the corner of the bed, cast a cold, chilly glance at Qin Huai, and said in a low voice:
“Put it on once you are awake.”
Qin Huai’s gaze remained fixed on his face. There were things he wanted to say, but he could not get them out. The words reached his lips only to be stiffly swallowed back.
What was done was done. Explaining now would be useless.
After all, he had indeed left Shen Yuzhi for money back then.
But there was one thing he still needed to confirm. “Mr. Shen, last night?”
“The car is already prepared. You may leave at any time.”
Shen Yuzhi’s eyes were filled with indifference. He looked at Qin Huai as if he were a complete stranger.
“As for what happened last night,” Shen Yuzhi said with a cold laugh as he walked toward the door, not caring in the slightest, “let us just consider it a mutual exchange of needs.”
Hearing this, Qin Huai felt as if a bucket of ice water had been poured over him. A chill settled over his head.
They had been intimate for so long last night, yet Shen Yuzhi had not even been willing to give him a temporary mark.
Qin Huai felt a piercing pain in his chest, as if several blades were burning like fire, pinning him down and piercing through the defenses he had worked so hard to maintain.
Back then, he had left so resolutely. Now, he had no right to regret it.
He picked up the gift bag with trembling hands and got out of bed.
Having been exhausted all night, Qin Huai felt the room spin the moment his feet hit the floor. His hand knocked against the corner of the bedside table, making a loud noise.
Shen Yuzhi noticed, stopped in his tracks, hesitated for a few seconds, then walked away without looking back.
He forced himself not to look at this person whom he both loved and hated again.
For countless nights in the past, he had never been able to close his eyes because of Qin Huai’s sudden departure.
Once Qin Huai was ready, he went downstairs. Every minute he stayed here felt like his heart was being pierced by knives.
When the Cheng family brought him home years ago, in order to cover the cost of surgery, he had ignored Shen Yuzhi’s pleas to stay and taken Qin Lan abroad for treatment.
Now that Qin Lan was gone, he had no support in the Cheng family and had become a prisoner mocked by everyone.
When he left, Shen Yuzhi had just taken over the Shen family company and was facing the risk of bankruptcy. Now, he was thriving in the business world.
Thinking of this, the corners of Qin Huai’s mouth lifted into a faint smile.
As long as he is doing well, that is enough.
As Qin Huai exited the villa, he looked up and caught the dark, deep gaze of Shen Yuzhi.
Shen Yuzhi had changed into a bespoke suit. The deep blue tone suited him perfectly. He was tall, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. His side profile was sharp and distinct, tracing a smooth and clear arc.
At this moment, he scanned him with an indifferent expression, looking noble and cold.
Qin Huai avoided his gaze and intended to walk away as if he had not seen him, but Shen Yuzhi seemed to read his mind and called out to him.
Qin Huai did not want any further entanglement between them, so he forced a smile and said, feigning ease:
“Don’t worry, Mr. Shen. I will act as if last night never happened. I will not hold you responsible.”
Shen Yuzhi did not respond. He simply stared at him with eyes that looked like they were made of crushed ice.
The surroundings fell into a terrifying silence.
Qin Huai found it hard to breathe. Whenever he met Shen Yuzhi’s eyes, scenes from years ago that broke his heart flashed through his mind.
Those were actions he could never forgive himself for.
Without thinking, he raised his feet, intending to flee, but Shen Yuzhi grabbed his arm.
“Have you ever regretted it?”
Qin Huai stiffened.
He looked at Shen Yuzhi, dazed. Shen Yuzhi still wore that same indifferent and distant expression, as if he had asked it casually and did not care about the answer.
“Mr. Shen, that was years ago.” The cold wind blew, and Qin Huai heard his own voice say, “I have long forgotten.”
With that, Qin Huai fled as if escaping.
Shen Yuzhi’s expression darkened. He lit a cigarette. The smoke shrouded his features, making his expression unreadable.
“Qin Huai,” Shen Yuzhi muttered to himself with a self-deprecating laugh, “but I cannot forget.”
Qin Huai was taken back to the Cheng family’s old residence by Shen Yuzhi’s private car.
His whole body ached intensely, and his head felt dizzy the moment his feet touched the ground.
The blazing sun shone into his eyes, giving him a bit of energy. Qin Huai forced himself to stay conscious and walked inside.
He had barely stepped through the door when Lin Xingxue walked up and slapped him across the face.
Qin Huai did not react in time. His face turned to the side, and a burning pain followed.
“You wretch!” Lin Xingxue glared at him viciously and berated him. “Why do you smell like another Alpha? You actually dared to betray Ling Feng and even got into a physical confrontation with him? Do you have any idea that because of you, the Ling family wants to terminate their partnership with your father? Are you only satisfied once you have completely ruined the Cheng family?”
Qin Huai turned around, stared at the unhinged woman before him, and let out a cold laugh.
“When you treated me like a tool and sent me away last night, you should have expected this outcome.”
Lin Xingxue’s expression shifted. She turned her head and gave Cheng An a signal.
Cheng An simply frowned and shook his head.
“Lin Xingxue, do not think I do not know what the two of you are planning. Is it not just to get me to marry Ling Feng so you can take the opportunity to get rid of me?”
The smile on Qin Huai’s lips vanished, and his expression darkened. “That is nothing but a pipe dream.”
“You!”
Lin Xingxue’s features were contorted. Just as she was about to speak, Qin Huai raised his other hand and unceremoniously slapped her across the face.
Qin Huai took a tissue from the side, wiped his hand, and tossed it in front of Lin Xingxue with a sneer.
“That is returning the favor. But honestly, I feel dirty just touching your face.”
“Qin Huai, you!” Lin Xingxue clutched her face. She never expected Qin Huai to change so much after a single night. “You have really gone insane!”
Seeing this, Cheng An held onto Lin Xingxue’s arm and asked in a low, gentle voice, “Mom, are you okay?”
Qin Huai was amused by this display of mother-daughter affection. He lowered his eyes, his pale red lips curling upward, waiting for them to continue their performance.
Cheng An turned around and glared at him. “Qin Huai, you are still laughing? Wait until Dad gets home. Let us see how he deals with you.”
Ever since Qin Huai returned, Cheng An had been unable to stand him. No matter what he did, Qin Huai was always slightly better than him.
Now, with the marriage alliance with the Ling family, these status and benefits should have been his, but Qin Huai was an S-grade Omega, while he was only B-grade. Ling Feng had not even spared him a glance.
Qin Huai could not care less. He had nothing left. What was there to be afraid of?
“Qin Huai, I do not care what you did yesterday, but today you must go and apologize to Ling Feng in person!”
Qin Huai said coldly, “And what if I refuse to go?”
“You are going, whether you like it or not!”
Just then, Xu Chengde walked in from outside. He entered the room and threw a handful of photographs at Qin Huai.
“You wretch! Look at what you have done! If it were not for the sake of your mother, I would have beaten you to death today!”
Qin Huai scanned the scattered photos on the floor with a cold face, his brows furrowed.
The photos showed him yesterday being carried by Shen Yuzhi, nestled in his arms.
When Cheng An saw the person in the photos, his face turned livid with anger.
Shen Yuzhi was one of the few top-tier Alphas in the capital. His status and position were sky-high. Cheng An had not even seen Shen Yuzhi’s face, yet Qin Huai had already hooked up with him!
“Indeed a wretch,” Lin Xingxue sneered, “throwing yourself at every man you see, just like your mother.”
“Lin Xingxue, say that one more time if you dare.”
Qin Huai could tolerate how this pair of mother and daughter cursed him, but he would never allow them to sully Qin Lan in the slightest.
“Am I wrong? Did your mother not use those base methods to seduce a married man, only to give birth to a bastard like you? Was I wrong about that?”
Qin Huai could not take it anymore. He stepped forward, intending to grab Lin Xingxue, but was intercepted by Xu Chengde.
“Enough!”
Xu Chengde roared in anger. “Both of you, get back to your rooms and stop acting like maniacs. Qin Huai, come with me to the Ling family now.”
In that moment, Qin Huai saw the gloating faces of that mother and daughter, and he wished he could rip their faces apart.
