The Ex-Wife-to-Be Is Acting Weird After Losing Her Memory - Chapter 34
Chapter 34: March Five
The moment the phone screen lit up, Zhen Zhen’s voice abruptly paused.
Several executives were sitting or standing in the office. Seeing their boss suddenly falter, they uniformly looked up from their computer screens toward her.
Zhen Zhen cleared her throat and continued to discuss the next plan as if nothing happened.
As soon as the work was assigned, she immediately picked up her phone and opened the notification.
It must be an important message, right? The executives exchanged glances. Normally, their boss never looked at her phone during meetings, operating with astonishing efficiency. But lately, she had been subconsciously taking out her phone to check it every now and then.
“For the Los Angeles test race this time, are we proceeding as planned?” the project manager turned back to ask before leaving. “Will you still be leading the team personally?”
Zhen Zhen’s gaze was still on the screen. She was silent for a few seconds before answering: “Yes, I will go personally.”
The boss sounds a bit reluctant… The project manager scratched his head. Zhen Zhen had been hands-on with every test race for the past few years. I must be overthinking things.
The crowd dispersed, and the office became quiet again.
Her finger gently swiped across the screen. The photo showed a graceful, slender back. Lotus flowers bloomed on the snow-white skin, tracing a beautiful curve, as if exuding a faint, tranquil fragrance.
I miss her even more than I thought. Zhen Zhen sighed lightly, reaching up to rub her temples.
As an objective and rational engineering woman, for the first time in her life, Zhen Zhen found that perhaps time truly possessed some strange relativity. Since Lu Jiayin left, she felt that every workday was extraordinarily long, exceptionally difficult to pass.
She stared at the photo for a long time, a smile playing on her lips, and sent a message back to Lu Jiayin.
Her assistant knocked on the door to signal the start of the next meeting. Zhen Zhen nodded to acknowledge it, stood up, and put her phone back in her pocket.
According to our usual communication habits, I should receive her reply after the meeting, right?
This sense of anticipation made Zhen Zhen’s steps feel slightly lighter.
However, she didn’t expect Lu Jiayin to miss their usual contact today. From the message sent at noon until Zhen Zhen finished working late and returned home, her phone remained completely silent.
The screen was repeatedly turned on and off. Several thoughts spun through Zhen Zhen’s mind: Perhaps she had an impromptu scene added. Perhaps the director is having a meeting with them. Or maybe she’s eating, or showering… She mentally provided all sorts of possibilities for Lu Jiayin, yet she still felt a little anxious.
It wasn’t until the hands crossed midnight, marking the complete end of the day, that Lu Jiayin still hadn’t replied. The unease in Zhen Zhen’s heart gradually expanded. She hesitated, then picked up the phone and dialed.
Without that brief “good night” message, it felt as though the day couldn’t truly end.
The phone rang “beep, beep” several times. Just as Zhen Zhen thought no one would answer, she heard a familiar, soft voice.
The moment the voice appeared, Zhen Zhen’s heart settled. She let out a soft sigh of relief: “I thought something happened to you…”
Hearing this, silence fell on the other end, leaving only the static sound of the phone line. Zhen Zhen thought she was tired and was about to say, “Go to bed early,” when she heard a tiny sob coming from the other end.
The sound was so faint that it almost made one doubt if it was a mistake. Then, Lu Jiayin’s tearful voice rang out again.
“Something did happen…”
The dark green Bentley sped onto the freeway entrance in the early hours of the morning. The driver held the steering wheel steadily, observing the person in the back seat through the rearview mirror.
Zhen Zhen wore a charcoal-gray trench coat, her hair casually tied back. She was on the phone, and since getting into the car, she had made several calls, instructing her assistant to pick up a doctor, cancel tomorrow’s meetings, and arrange for remote work.
The driver was a long-time employee of the Zhen family, having served the young boss for nearly four years. This was the first time he had seen her so anxious and meticulous. He gripped the steering wheel tighter, trying to drive the car as smoothly and quickly as possible.
Their destination was Nan’an, three hundred kilometers away. After exiting the county road, they still had to pass through a section of mountain road. Just as the driver reached the intersection, he found their way blocked.
“A fallen tree is across the highway. Your car can’t get through right now.” Several traffic police and local auxiliaries in reflective vests were standing at the intersection, waving signal lights as a warning.
The driver asked a few more questions about the situation before returning to the car: “CEO Xiao Zhen, they said the road clearance is ongoing. Cars can only go up tomorrow morning.”
He knew Zhen Zhen’s habits. She usually wouldn’t travel in extreme weather conditions like rain, snow, or dark, slippery roads. A journey of several hundred kilometers late at night like this must be an uncomfortable experience for her.
Zhen Zhen sat by the back window, her hands folded in front of her. Hearing the update, she pondered for a moment, then asked: “Leave the car here. Can I still get through?”
The driver almost thought he misheard her, but he followed her instruction and inquired again with the locals. This time, it took him a long time to return, a look of distress on his face.
“There is a young man who said he’s taking the small path up, but I’ve seen it—that car won’t do…” As he spoke, an old-fashioned small truck rumbled up from a distance. The engine noise was loud, and it emitted a choking exhaust smell. The driver said with a grimace, “How can you ride in that car?”
The Bentley’s door opened, and Zhen Zhen stepped into the mud. The edge of her boot was immediately coated in slush. Unfazed, she walked to the roadside and instructed the driver: “Please wait here for Xiao Chen and the others. Go up when the road is clear tomorrow morning.”
After speaking, she gathered her coat and walked straight toward the small truck.
The driver was startled by her action and quickly stopped her: “It’s only a few hours until dawn. If you wait a little longer, the road will open…”
It’s true that it’s only a few hours, Zhen Zhen blinked lightly, but if I wait, that person will have to endure the pain alone all night.
The small truck, braving the fine sleet, set off quickly. Cold gusts of wind blew through the window cracks that couldn’t be fully closed, chilling the cab.
The road was terrible, bumpy and shaking violently. Zhen Zhen gripped the handle by the window, trying her best to maintain balance, but she was constantly jolted back and forth, thrown up and down on the seat.
The young driver apologized sheepishly: “The main road is being cleared, so we can only take this small path…”
He saw that her face had turned pale, clearly struggling with the poor road conditions, but Zhen Zhen shook her head and said softly: “It’s alright, keep driving.”
Outside the window, it was pitch black. Only a few scattered lights were visible in the winding mountain roads. Zhen Zhen watched the dimly lit path ahead and pursed her lips.
Lu Jiayin was woken up by the sound of snow. Tiny, hard snow pellets crackled against the window. She groggily opened her eyes and heard what sounded like a knock on the door.
She thought it was the wind, but the sound paused for a moment and then resumed rhythmically, leading her to realize it was indeed someone knocking.
In the middle of the night, no one should be looking for her. She grabbed a jacket and wrapped it around herself, tiptoeing to the door.
This was a small hotel entirely booked by the crew as a temporary resting place. The surrounding rooms housed staff members. Lu Jiayin became a little bolder and asked in a low voice: “Who is it?”
“It’s me.”
Hearing that voice, Lu Jiayin froze. She stood there stunned for a few seconds, rubbed her eyes as if in disbelief, and then abruptly pulled the door open.
The emergency light in the hallway was dim, but she recognized the person at the door instantly.
The dim night seemed to be instantly painted with a bright color.
Lu Jiayin let out a soft cry and lunged forward, hugging the figure who was still carrying the chill of the snow.
“How did you get here?” Her voice trembled. She tried hard to calm herself down but couldn’t resist sniffing the person’s neck, asking tearfully.
“I was worried, so I came,” Zhen Zhen replied lightly, then asked the question she cared about most: “How badly are you hurt? Let me see.”
She had been worried since she received the call. Now, sitting in the cramped hotel room and seeing Lu Jiayin’s pitiful, red-rimmed eyes, she felt her entire heart clench.
Especially when Lu Jiayin rolled up her sleeve, revealing the large scrape marks on her formerly fair, smooth arm. Zhen Zhen felt both distressed and angry. She didn’t dare touch the wound, so she carefully held her wrist and gently stroked it in comfort.
“Does it hurt this badly?” she asked sadly.
Lu Jiayin hadn’t felt it was too unbearable, but hearing that, she immediately pouted miserably: “It hurts terribly.”
Zhen Zhen kissed her cheek affectionately.
It’s a good thing I managed to get here. She guided Lu Jiayin back to the bed and softly coaxed her: “I was afraid they wouldn’t treat it promptly here, so I had Xiao Chen bring a doctor over. We’ll have it thoroughly checked tomorrow morning.”
From the moment she saw Zhen Zhen, Lu Jiayin felt half recovered, but being comforted so gently made the sweet feeling in her heart impossible to hide. She gave a delicate hum and asked: “Will you stay with me?”
On the way, Zhen Zhen had called Fu Ruyi for an update. She now said: “Of course I’ll stay with you. I’ll leave after I confirm you’re alright.”
She didn’t let Lu Jiayin worry about anything else, stroking her hair as she said: “Be a good girl and sleep first. We’ll talk after the doctor arrives tomorrow…”
The soft, pale little hand reached out from under the blanket and tugged at her sleeve: “Wife, sleep with me…”
The bed in the hotel room wasn’t large. After Zhen Zhen lay down, there was almost no space between them. She was afraid of pressing against Lu Jiayin’s injury, so she deliberately moved closer to the wall.
The dimly lit room was faintly brightened by the snow light outside the window.
She saw Lu Jiayin’s moist almond eyes narrow slightly. She let out a small, petulant whimper like an adorable kitten and squeezed closer to her.
The next second.
An arm wrapped around her waist, and a soft body pressed into her embrace. Warm, moist air touched the side of her face. She heard Lu Jiayin’s sweet, cooing voice ask: “Do you miss me?”
She had a faint but familiar fragrance about her. Smelling this scent, a hint of curiosity appeared in Zhen Zhen’s eyes. She whispered: “Why do you smell like this perfume?”
The delicate red lips close to her gently curved up. Zhen Zhen saw Lu Jiayin free her left hand and take out a small golden bottle from beside the pillow, shaking it at her.
“When I packed my luggage, I packed your scent too.”
