The Ex-Wife-to-Be Is Acting Weird After Losing Her Memory - Chapter 31
Chapter 31: March Two
What was the last thing you ate last night?
It was a strawberry.
But Lu Jiayin absolutely could not say that answer out loud. The strawberry had been washed by Zhen Zhen herself and brought to her on a plate. The plump, red berry still had glistening water droplets on it. Its fragrant, fruity aroma diffused everywhere, making it look juicy and incredibly delicious.
Then, that strawberry was picked up by a slender finger and gently placed on her neck, the cold berry soothing her hot skin. It slowly slid all the way down, past the peaks of her ‘mountains,’ and amidst her subtle, unbearable whimpers, was finally held by a red lip and fed into her mouth… Lu Jiayin’s face was scarlet. She stammered for a long time without saying a word, until Zhen Zhen gave a light cough, interrupting the awkwardness: “How about we change the question?”
The doctor looked at the two people in front of him with suspicion. After a moment’s pause, he changed the question as requested: “Here is a math problem. Listen carefully. How much is one hundred minus seven?”
Lu Jiayin: “Ninety-three?”
“Correct. Now, ninety-three minus seven?”
“Uh… seventy-six. No, no, no, eighty-nine?” Lu Jiayin sat up abruptly, stuttering as she added, “It’s eighty-six!”
Why were these math questions continuous? Math had been her least favorite subject since childhood. Now, tense and anxious, her answers were practically disastrous.
Especially when she felt Zhen Zhen let out a soft laugh beside her, she turned her head, displeased: “Wife, are you laughing at me?”
“Absolutely not.” Zhen Zhen immediately stopped smiling.
You clearly were laughing! Lu Jiayin screamed internally, challenging her: “Then let me ask you, what is three thousand six hundred eighty-seven minus two hundred forty-four?”
“Three thousand four hundred forty-three,” Zhen Zhen rattled off calmly.
Lu Jiayin’s expression froze.
She lost.
“Ahem, ahem.” The doctor raised his hand, covering his mouth with a fist, coughing a few times as a hint. “I think that’s enough.”
Any more questions, and the office would clearly turn into a stage for the couple to display their affection. The doctor put down his record book indifferently: “From the CT results, the hematoma is already dissipating, and there shouldn’t be any risk of rupture. You can rest assured.”
“As for the amnesia, memory recovery takes a certain amount of time. It’s not like there’s a switch that goes ‘whoosh’ and everything is restored. Ms. Lu, go home and get plenty of rest, and don’t put too much psychological pressure on yourself…”
They passed just like that?
Lu Jiayin, holding the report, still found it somewhat unbelievable, but having successfully concealed the “memory recovery” issue brought a slight relaxation to her strained nerves.
However, how to find the right time to confess to Zhen Zhen now became a problem she had to solve herself.
Lu Jiayin was lost in thought when her right hand, resting on the seat, was taken. Zhen Zhen rubbed her slightly cool hand and asked: “Are you tired? Shall we go to the Danfu for Fish Maw Chicken hotpot?”
With the start of November, the temperature had begun to drop. Every time Zhen Zhen touched Lu Jiayin’s hand, it was always cold. The thought that Lu Jiayin would soon be filming, likely enduring severe cold temperatures while traveling through mountains and rivers, made Zhen Zhen furrow her brow slightly, gripping the hand a little tighter in her palm.
While enjoying her wife’s hand-warming service, Lu Jiayin also belatedly realized that she was due to join the crew next week, and her sweet time spent day and night with Zhen Zhen was coming to an end.
Once she started working, they might go back to their previous routine, both constantly flying around the world for their schedules. When that happened, would the closeness they had finally built up also fade away and disappear over time?
She bit her lip lightly, nestling into Zhen Zhen’s arms like a child seeking comfort, murmuring softly: “I don’t want to eat hotpot…”
She just wanted to cling to this person as much as possible, unwilling to let go of the warmth she brought.
With this thought, Lu Jiayin took a deep breath. She turned to face Zhen Zhen, suddenly hooking her arms around her neck and climbing onto her like a koala, embracing her tightly with both hands and feet.
The soft person fell into her arms. Lu Jiayin’s fragrant, flowery scent rushed into Zhen Zhen’s nostrils, weaving into a captivating aroma. Zhen Zhen freed one hand to wrap around Lu Jiayin’s waist, slightly taken aback by her sudden enthusiasm.
This person’s way of acting spoiled was becoming increasingly skillful, and increasingly hard for her to resist.
She tilted her head up slightly, meeting those moist, beautiful almond eyes. In the dark, clear eyes, a captivating romantic haze spread like mist.
“If you don’t want hotpot, we’ll change it.” Enchanted by her gaze, Zhen Zhen’s voice involuntarily softened. “What do you want to eat?”
Lu Jiayin curved her lips, slowly leaning in toward the person against the seat back. The spacious back seat of the car was occupied by their overlapping bodies, making the space feel cramped. She slowly moved toward Zhen Zhen’s lips, saying syllable by syllable in a low voice: “I… want… to… eat… you.”
The next second, the remaining words were slowly swallowed.
Even though both of them were reluctant to part, Lu Jiayin still had to wake up early on Saturday morning to prepare to leave for the film set.
The night before, she had clung to Zhen Zhen until very late, unable to sleep. The slight bitterness in her heart seemed to expand every few minutes.
In retrospect, they had actually experienced too many such farewell moments. Either she was going to the set for filming, or Zhen Zhen was leaving home to attend a forum or competition abroad. Their time together was scarce.
However, this kind of reluctant struggle was a first for her. She felt like time was never enough. Every extra second felt like water flowing away, and she couldn’t help but feel the urge to keep her here.
She walked heavily into the living room. Zhen Zhen was already up and busy making her breakfast in the kitchen. The sweet scent of pancakes filled the air. Lu Jiayin tiptoed over and hugged her wife from behind.
“Be careful of the cooking smells getting into your hair,” Zhen Zhen said with a smile, now much more familiar with a celebrity’s work routine. “Be a good girl and wait over there.”
The breakfast she served was very rich. Lu Jiayin remembered the small detail she had casually mentioned last night—that there wasn’t much good food on the set, and she often subsisted on hard-boiled eggs. Zhen Zhen had ended up making her this entire spread of delicious food.
“I heard from Fu Ruyi that the first phase of closed-set filming is two months, and you can only occasionally rest after that?” Zhen Zhen forked a piece of mango and fed it to Lu Jiayin. “You need to take care of your body. If you get too tired, don’t hold back or keep quiet. Don’t push yourself.”
This was true. Filming a drama was a massive undertaking involving the entire team, and actors had to do their utmost not to slow things down, lest they delay the entire group’s progress. Lu Jiayin hadn’t expected Zhen Zhen to even know about this. She smiled and said, “I will be careful.”
Their filming location this time was in Nan’an. To restore the environment in which Mu Shuanghe, the protagonist, grew up in the film, the crew ventured deep into a village area for location shooting. Many scenes in the early stages would be completed outdoors, and conditions were expected to be tough.
She had never been a delicate person and was already used to traveling with the crew, but hearing someone care about her in such detail brought another layer of soft emotion. Lu Jiayin smiled and nodded obediently.
In all her years of working, she could endure hardships in most aspects, but her sleep quality was poor. When shooting in remote locations, hotel conditions were often substandard, and she sometimes had to make do with a quick nap in a makeshift tent during night shoots. For this, Lu Jiayin had asked Fu Ruyi to prepare plenty of melatonin and earplugs for emergencies.
But she didn’t want Zhen Zhen to worry about these small things, so she hadn’t mentioned them.
Even when eating breakfast slowly, the clock stubbornly pointed to nine o’clock. Lu Jiayin stood up with a distressed look.
Zhen Zhen also put down her knife and fork and proactively went to the door to help her with her suitcase.
“You don’t need to see me off,” Lu Jiayin forced a nonchalant smile. “The car is already waiting downstairs. If you follow me down, it’ll…”
It would only mean a few extra minutes, and since her assistants and driver were all present, Lu Jiayin felt too embarrassed to make any intimate gestures.
But Zhen Zhen only smiled: “It’s fine. I’ll feel more at ease if I see you off to the car.”
Seeing her resolute attitude, Lu Jiayin said no more. The two walked silently into the elevator hall. Zhen Zhen raised her hand and pressed the floor button. The elevator car carried them downward.
This separation, though not a long one, felt unusually heavy. It was as if a connection they had just established was being severed with every passing second. A dampness appeared in Lu Jiayin’s eyes. Afraid Zhen Zhen would see it, she lowered her head silently, carefully regulating her breathing.
Unfortunately, even though she tried hard to walk slowly, the distance from their door to the outside was simply too short. Just as Lu Jiayin looked up, intending to say something more to Zhen Zhen, a car horn suddenly sounded.
Seeing the vehicle slowly approaching them, Lu Jiayin couldn’t help but widen her eyes in surprise.
Approaching them was a white GC RV. The massive body did not appear bulky; instead, it had a very sleek, futuristic design. Peeking out from the car window and excitedly waving at her was the assistant, Ding Ding.
“Sister Jiayin, this is the new car CEO Zhen bought, specially for picking you up!” The car stopped in front of the building. Ding Ding sprinted out, rushing to help move the luggage first.
Lu Jiayin was so surprised she could barely speak.
It wasn’t that she hadn’t rented RVs before; she knew they were particularly convenient on film sets. Especially a model this large, it was likely equipped with a bedroom and shower room. She glanced at Zhen Zhen and whispered: “You bought this?”
Zhen Zhen nodded: “I called Fu Ruyi a few days ago and thought you might need it…”
She originally wanted to inquire about Lu Jiayin’s current work situation, but she overheard Fu Ruyi mentioning that Lu Jiayin’s sleep wasn’t very good. It was the first time she learned about this issue. After all, they hadn’t lived together for a long time, and Lu Jiayin had been sleeping well recently—though, recently, that was probably due to exhaustion.
Her thin lips curled into a smile: “I had them install soundproof sliding doors, so you can catch up on sleep in the car even if you can’t make it back to the hotel at night. I didn’t know the specifics of your work before, but now that I do, I want to do something for you.”
Before she finished speaking, Zhen Zhen saw Lu Jiayin pounce on her. Her cool cheek rubbed against Zhen Zhen’s neck, and she said sweetly: “Thank you, wife.”
She didn’t know what else to say. She just desperately wanted to hold this person longer. Her slender, pale fingers poked at Zhen Zhen’s shirt front, and finally she said: “It’s only two months. I’ll come back as soon as I get a holiday.”
“Go focus on your work. Don’t worry,” Zhen Zhen hugged her waist, finding this farewell oddly touching herself. She whispered: “Can I call you?”
This was the first time she had asked such a question. Before Lu Jiayin could answer, she added: “If I miss you very much, can I call you?”
