The Ex-Wife-to-Be Is Acting Weird After Losing Her Memory - Chapter 16
Chapter 16: Etude Six
The former Zhen Zhen would absolutely not have said something like this.
Lu Jiayin was stunned by Zhen Zhen’s sudden directness, forgetting for a moment how to respond. A voice in her head kept telling her: Stay calm, don’t panic!
She quickly composed herself, looking up with a smile: “I’ll make you breakfast tomorrow morning?”
Poor acting review.
Although she knew very well that the better solution in this scene was to subtly flirt back, Lu Jiayin found it incredibly difficult to say embarrassing lines without any reservations while looking at Zhen Zhen’s face.
The moment her gaze met those dark, clear eyes, her heart pounded violently. The heat in her earlobes felt like it was on fire, spreading and blushing her entire face, making her desperate to escape the tense atmosphere.
Zhen Zhen gave a soft laugh: “You can cook?”
The Lu Jiayin she remembered never entered a kitchen, seeming like a pampered young lady who never did manual labor. Just two days ago, she volunteered to make coffee and successfully broke the coffee machine.
Lu Jiayin only wanted to muddle through the current situation, or she felt she would die of a heart attack. Hearing Zhen Zhen’s question, she nodded vigorously: “Of course, I can! It’s just breakfast. Don’t look down on me.”
Her eyes sparkled, and the little bun tied on top of her head wobbled as she nodded. Zhen Zhen’s gaze lingered on her face for a moment, then she smiled: “Alright then.”
She couldn’t resist reaching out to pinch the little bun: “It’s getting late. I’ll clean up here. You go take a shower and sleep.”
“Ah… right! I, you… um, I’ll go shower first!” Lu Jiayin, treated like a cat being petted, looked down, found her slippers, jumped off the dining chair, and then, not daring to appear too obviously in flight, she slowly retreated towards the master bedroom, turning back to smile with every step.
Zhen Zhen was momentarily puzzled by her awkward movements, stopping her cleanup of the meal boxes: “Something else?”
She had grown somewhat used to Lu Jiayin occasionally coming over to cuddle and charm her in recent days. Seeing this, she thought Lu Jiayin had another strange request.
However, Lu Jiayin shook her head: “Nothing!” After saying that, she turned quickly and scurried into the bedroom as if running away.
Lu Jiayin’s plan was flawless. According to Zhen Zhen’s usual schedule, she would wake up promptly at seven in the morning, drink a cup of coffee, exercise for half an hour, take a shower exactly at eight, and then start eating breakfast. After that, depending on her day’s schedule, she would either work from home to keep Lu Jiayin company or return to the office.
So, she only needed to prepare breakfast before eight. As for the fact that she couldn’t cook, with so many small appliances in the kitchen, making an egg and heating a cup of milk surely didn’t require any culinary skills, did it?
She rolled around in bed, thinking about how to coexist harmoniously with Zhen Zhen tomorrow. After a long time, she finally fell into a daze and slept.
The bright, dazzling morning sunlight shone on her face. Lu Jiayin looked at the clock on the wall and her vision went black.
8:15 AM.
She jumped out of bed and rushed into the living room. Before she had taken two steps, she heard Zhen Zhen’s voice: “You’re awake?”
A graceful figure sat on the sofa. Zhen Zhen had already showered and changed, waiting for her calmly and composedly. She seemed to be going out today, dressed in a dark blue women’s suit, with a stand-collar shirt buttoned all the way up, covering her slender neck. Her hair was neatly pulled back, making her look exceptionally formal.
Lu Jiayin was momentarily stunned by the elegant, professional elite look and laughed awkwardly: “Wait for me for just a moment. I’ll make you breakfast.”
Since she had promised to do it, she couldn’t give up halfway. Following her plan from the previous night, she opened the refrigerator and took out a few eggs. She could use the egg cooker for the eggs; she had seen her assistant do it on set. Her gaze slid over the row of small appliances on the countertop…
“That’s an air fryer.” The clear, melodious prompt sounded from behind her. Zhen Zhen had somehow appeared at the kitchen entrance, looking at her with a cautious expression.
Lu Jiayin’s hand quickly moved away from the dark green appliance: “Hahaha… I got it wrong.”
“The white one is the egg cooker… Um, add water first… Not that much, be careful… How about I do it?”
Zhen Zhen rubbed her forehead, temporarily taking off her suit jacket and rolling up her sleeves as she said: “You’ll be joining a production crew soon; you should pay attention to safety.”
Lu Jiayin: “…” How dangerous can cooking be? But she obediently stepped back a few paces, offering a flattering smile: “I’ll watch you do it and learn something along the way.”
Seeing her beaming with smiles, Zhen Zhen’s lips curved slightly. Without stopping her movements, she took the eggs and placed them on the counter, then bent down to take out a white kitchen apron.
As soon as she put on the apron, Lu Jiayin immediately snuck up: “I’ll help you tie it!” She was eager to make amends and took the apron strings to tie a knot behind Zhen Zhen’s back.
However, this naturally brought her very close behind Zhen Zhen. The faint scent of Zhen Zhen’s perfume wafted over. Lu Jiayin blinked. In her line of sight was Zhen Zhen’s fair, clean nape, and then her delicately contoured ear. She didn’t have pierced ears, and her earlobe, highlighted by the light, looked like a small piece of jade, making Lu Jiayin want to take a bite.
I might be hungry… Lu Jiayin quickly dismissed the terrible thought from her mind. By this time, Zhen Zhen had started the eggs, taken out two slices of toast, and soaked them in the egg and milk mixture she had just prepared.
The frying pan was heated to medium heat, melting butter. Zhen Zhen placed the toast, now fully saturated with the egg and milk mixture, into the pan. A sweet aroma instantly arose. While the toast was frying, she washed some lettuce and kale and made a simple salad.
Lu Jiayin watched her on the side as if she were performing magic. In just over ten minutes, salad, French toast, and eggs were all on the table. In front of Lu Jiayin, there was also a glass of freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juice.
“Why are you… so good at cooking?” she asked in disbelief. Zhen Zhen, like herself, had assistants handle most things and shouldn’t have many domestic skills.
Zhen Zhen explained calmly: “When I was studying abroad, I could tolerate other things, but the food was so bad that I learned to cook.”
She had studied abroad since she was sixteen. Although her grandfather had prepared a house for her near the school, Zhen Zhen still chose to live in the dormitory to save time when her schoolwork got busy.
Lu Jiayin couldn’t wait to stab her fork into the plate of toast in the center of the table—the most tempting item. The rich egg mixture had completely soaked the toast. The moment it entered her mouth, a strong milky aroma, paired with the hot, fragrant, and soft texture, made her eyes widen: “Delicious!”
She couldn’t help but take another bite: “I had no idea you could make such delicious food…”
Her cheeks were full, and she chewed her food like a little squirrel. Zhen Zhen’s gaze rested on her face. After a moment of contemplation, she said: “I offered to make you breakfast before, but at that time, you were trying to maintain your figure and wouldn’t eat carbs or sugar…”
At this point, she asked uncertainly: “Don’t you need to control your weight now?”
Lu Jiayin’s hand holding the fork suddenly froze.
Hearing the implication of her question, and looking at how the dishes were arranged on the table… she finally realized what was amiss.
“Uh…” She swallowed the food in her mouth guiltily. “I just wanted to try it… Here, have it back?”
No wonder the toast only consisted of two small pieces; those were meant for Zhen Zhen! Her portion should have been the salad and the fruit and vegetable juice.
Zhen Zhen looked at the sliced toast on the plate, said nothing more, and used her fork to separate the half that had been punctured and moved it toward herself. Then, she pushed the still relatively whole and pretty half back to Lu Jiayin.
“I have an important meeting this morning, so I needed a bit of sugar this morning,” she explained succinctly. “A little is enough.”
Lu Jiayin looked at the half piece of fragrant toast in front of her, feeling so embarrassed she could dig a massive hole in the dining room floor.
After Zhen Zhen finished breakfast, Lu Jiayin, feeling guilty, walked her to the front door: “I’m sorry, I promised to cook for you but woke up late… and then I…”
After saying this, she kept her head down, her rosy lips tightly pressed, looking like a pitiful little animal. Zhen Zhen didn’t seem to mind. She smiled faintly: “It’s the same no matter who cooks. The important thing is who you share breakfast with.”
Shortly after seeing Zhen Zhen off, Fu Ruyi came to visit.
“Since your health has recovered well, I’ve accepted the invitation to the ‘Yueshang Grand Ceremony’ for you to attend the fashion show next week,” she said, handing the invitation to Lu Jiayin. “Director Long from Dark Light even specifically asked if you would be attending.”
Besides delivering the invitation, she also planned to take Lu Jiayin out: “MISS YAN, the designer you particularly liked, is back in the country. I managed to book an appointment with her, so we can go try on gowns today, just in time for you to wear next week.”
MISS YAN is a Chinese-American female designer whose style is known for its magnificence and traditional Chinese elements. Many actresses regard her gowns as red carpet essentials, but because she produces a limited number of pieces, appointments are extremely difficult to secure.
The studio was located in a central part of the city. The standalone three-story white building was designed by a famous architect and featured a beautiful bamboo forest in front. The carved brick screen wall was moved in its entirety from an old residence in Jiangnan, subtly showcasing its prestige. Lu Jiayin arrived at the studio in the afternoon. The sunlight was warm, illuminating the interior clearly.
The fitting area on the second floor was exceptionally quiet. Staff members politely offered hot tea and arranged a row of new gowns with labels attached for them to choose from.
This season’s gown collection was inspired by classical floral catalogs. Silk dresses featured embroidered floral patches using Su embroidery techniques, combined with lace and various gemstones, making them look extraordinarily rich and magnificent.
Lu Jiayin first noticed a dark green, Qipao-style gown. A magnolia branch, with both buds and fully bloomed flowers, spread from the chest down to the hem. The lifelike pattern, coupled with the elegant tailoring, was breathtakingly beautiful.
She admired the pattern on the gown. Just as she was about to ask about it, she heard the sound of high heels ascending the stairs, followed closely by a familiar, arrogant voice: “No, my schedule is very tight. I must try on clothes now.”
