The Ex-Wife-to-Be Is Acting Weird After Losing Her Memory - Chapter 15
Chapter 15: Etude Five
The celebrity van was quietly parked on the side of the road. Before the driver could speak, the chief agent reached out a hand and concisely ordered: “You get out first. Wait until I call you before you get back in.”
When only the two of them were left in the car, Lu Jiayin cautiously took off her eye mask. Fu Ruyi had restrained her inner emotion and stared intently at her: “You haven’t been lying to us all along, have you?”
What about the amnesia? If Lu Jiayin hadn’t accidentally mentioned her past of studying traditional opera just now, Fu Ruyi would have almost failed to realize that she had never brought up this matter to the amnesiac Lu Jiayin.
Lu Jiayin looked at her innocently: “Of course not! I only started to intermittently remember some past events two days ago…”
Ever since their practice of the kissing scene with Zhen Zhen, she felt a vague, continuous sense of dizziness in her mind. That night, she tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she would recall Zhen Zhen leaning over to kiss her.
Zhen Zhen’s handsome features magnified before her eyes, along with the warmth of her fingertip brushing against Lu Jiayin’s lips. These images slowly overlapped with another scene in her mind. She even heard the long-lost sound of ocean waves.
It was the ocean at night, the waves reflecting silvery light under the moonlight. There was also a distant sound of a guitar and a young girl’s singing. She and Zhen Zhen were sitting on the beach, and then, after she said something, Zhen Zhen leaned down and kissed her.
It wasn’t a hallucination or a dream; it was a scene she had truly experienced.
“So, you were suddenly stimulated and recovered some memories after being kissed by CEO Zhen?” Fu Ruyi sounded like she was listening to a ghost story. “Although the doctor did say your memory would slowly start to recover as the bruising lessened, this sounds…” She looked at Lu Jiayin meaningfully. “Should we let CEO Zhen kiss you more?”
Lu Jiayin looked sternly at her: “I also remembered that we were going to get a divorce.”
Before the car accident, the relationship between her and Zhen Zhen had become very distant. Aside from signing the divorce agreement, they hadn’t met alone for three whole months. Their last communication was when Zhen Zhen called to ask her when she wanted to finalize the procedure.
Thinking back to everything she had done to her soon-to-be ex-wife after her amnesia, Lu Jiayin wished she could suffer amnesia again on the spot.
“But I think CEO Zhen seems to care about you.” Fu Ruyi wasn’t as pessimistic as Lu Jiayin. From her perspective as an observer, if Zhen Zhen truly wanted nothing to do with her, she could have found an excuse to avoid her, but she didn’t refuse Lu Jiayin’s request to see her and even actively brought her home.
“That’s because I was injured,” Lu Jiayin shook her head. “Her personality is… very gentle. She probably can’t bear to leave me at this time. But we actually… in the six months she was in the US, she only contacted me twice. Now… it’s only because…”
It was only because she desperately clung to her that Zhen Zhen had no choice but to take care of her.
Fu Ruyi completely disagreed with Lu Jiayin’s assumption: “Think about it calmly. Given CEO Zhen’s background, there must be countless people who want to pursue her, right? If mere clinging worked, wouldn’t someone have taken her place long ago? I heard she’s famously virtuous and has never had a single scandal.”
Except with you, she silently added in her heart, then continued to ask: “Aside from all that, have you told CEO Zhen about your memory recovery?”
“Not yet.” In fact, she didn’t know how to bring it up. The thought of telling Zhen Zhen, Hi, I’ve recovered my memory, and I was wondering if we should still get divorced, made Lu Jiayin speechless.
Deep down, she felt a vague resistance. She was afraid of her own former coldness, and also afraid of the silent and distant Zhen Zhen.
Fu Ruyi sighed in relief: “That’s good. Don’t tell her!”
Compared to Lu Jiayin’s indecision, Fu Ruyi’s reasoning was much more straightforward. With Lu Jiayin potentially landing this highly anticipated female lead role, news of marital discord at this critical moment would primarily affect Lu Jiayin’s public image.
“Since you’re getting along well with CEO Zhen now, isn’t that a good thing?” she sincerely advised. “Wait until the film officially starts shooting and your career is back on track. Discussing divorce then will be better for both of you.”
Lu Jiayin hesitated a bit: “But I…” Since she had recovered some memories, being under the same roof as Zhen Zhen made her feel more uncertain.
After all, Zhen Zhen’s gentleness and indulgence toward her might not be the affection she hoped for, but merely a necessary cooperation to avoid stimulating her, given her injury and amnesia.
Fu Ruyi guessed her inner thoughts and continued to encourage her: “You’ve only just started to recover your memory. Don’t easily dismiss yourself. CEO Zhen was willing to marry the former you. Given how you’re acting now, getting along harmoniously again should absolutely not be a problem!”
Lu Jiayin was busy with auditions these past two days, so Zhen Zhen took the opportunity to return to the office and deal with some backlog of work.
Since graduation, she had been heavily involved in the Zhen Group, responsible for the technology sector. Tianfeng Technology is a leading domestic company in autonomous driving technology. As CEO, Zhen Zhen had to manage a multitude of complex issues.
Moreover, following Elder Mr. Zhen’s birthday banquet, the reorganization of the Zhen Group’s board of directors was put on the agenda. Zhen Zhen, as the chosen successor personally groomed by her grandfather, was also gradually starting to get involved with other business lines of the Zhen Group.
The meeting continued until after 9 p.m., when Zhen Zhen checked her wristwatch and announced the end of the day’s work.
Today was Lu Jiayin’s official audition day. She wondered if she had returned home.
Carrying a takeout box packed from a certain Michelin restaurant, Zhen Zhen opened the door, surprisingly hearing no sound.
Lu Jiayin usually kept the TV on, letting the lively sound fill the space. As Zhen Zhen changed her shoes, she glanced toward the living room, feeling slightly puzzled.
A familiar figure appeared in her view. Lu Jiayin was sitting on the sofa, holding a thick hardcover book, but hadn’t turned a page for a while.
“Did you eat?” She looked somewhat down. Had the audition not gone well?
Hearing the voice, Lu Jiayin raised her head. Those dark, deep almond eyes looked over quietly. For a moment, Zhen Zhen felt Lu Jiayin’s gaze was completely unfamiliar, but quickly, those eyes curved, revealing the smile she was familiar with.
“You’re back.” Lu Jiayin stood up and took two steps towards her, seemingly to greet her. When she saw Zhen Zhen carrying something, she reached out to take it.
Seeing Lu Jiayin reach out to her, Zhen Zhen’s eyes flickered, and she then very skillfully opened her arms, wrapping them around Lu Jiayin’s waist and pulling her into an embrace.
Lu Jiayin: “…”
This move felt oddly familiar.
“I had a lot of work today,” Zhen Zhen hugged her waist with one hand and placed the takeout box on the nearby table with the other. “You said you wanted to eat at ‘Yueting’ a couple of days ago, so I brought some back for you.”
Lu Jiayin, still feeling a bit awkward in her arms, subconsciously replied, “Thank you,” when she heard the comment.
Shouldn’t she be acting happier? Zhen Zhen lowered her eyes to look at Lu Jiayin.
From her perspective, Lu Jiayin looked a bit down. Her moist red lips were slightly parted, coated in an inviting sheen by the light, making one instinctively recall that soft, exquisite sensation. But Zhen Zhen quickly withdrew her gaze and asked gently, “Did the audition not go well?”
“No,” Lu Jiayin finally came back to her senses, realizing her poor reaction had made Zhen Zhen suspicious. She adjusted her mindset, hugged the person in front of her, and buried her head in Zhen Zhen’s neck: “I was just a little sleepy, so I felt very out of it…”
Although she still felt Lu Jiayin’s mood was off, Zhen Zhen didn’t press further. She raised her hand to stroke Lu Jiayin’s hair, smiling: “Then do you want to eat something before sleeping?”
The takeout box was well-wrapped, with a careful layer of foil on the outside for insulation. Lu Jiayin sat at the dining table, watching Zhen Zhen open the box for her. Zhen Zhen’s movements were meticulous; she didn’t mess up the foil at all.
Inside the box were crystal-clear glass shrimp balls and crab spring rolls. Because of the good insulation, the shrimp balls still had a suitable bouncy texture when eaten, and the soft center quality was preserved. Lu Jiayin, who usually dared not overeat to maintain her figure, immediately brightened up when she saw her favorite food.
“I was planning to go eat there today, but their reservations were fully booked early.” She stuffed food into her mouth, her eyes narrowed in satisfaction like a little squirrel. “How did you manage to get it?”
Zhen Zhen saw her eating happily, and a faint smile crossed her face: “I asked Xiao Chen to talk to the kitchen in advance. I picked it up right after work.”
To guarantee quality, “Yueting” usually didn’t offer takeout service. To get the food, Zhen Zhen had purposely ended her meeting half an hour early, personally traveled to North City, over twenty kilometers from the Zhen Group building, to pick up the order, and then rushed back immediately.
Lu Jiayin focused on stuffing another spring roll into her mouth. The delicious flavor of crab meat and roe surged forth. She couldn’t help but exclaim: “Happiness is the first bite of crab in autumn!”
It wasn’t until she had emptied the food box that she finally remembered Zhen Zhen sitting across from her. The half spring roll remaining in her hand suddenly felt a bit hot: “Do… do you want to eat this?”
Zhen Zhen looked at her slightly flushed, plump cheeks and smiled, shaking her head: “It’s fine. I bought it specifically for you. You eat it all.”
Lu Jiayin cautiously looked up, confirming that Zhen Zhen genuinely didn’t intend to eat any, and then reluctantly put the remaining spring roll in her mouth, chewing it slowly and treasuring it: “I haven’t eaten their food in ages…”
“Thank you, Wife… for specially bringing me a late-night snack so late…” This “Wife” had been stuck in her throat for nearly five minutes. Lu Jiayin felt obliged to say something sweet, having accepted the food, and finally stammered out the term of endearment.
Hearing her soft, sweet voice, Zhen Zhen’s lips curled up slightly.
“Oh,” she replied casually. “So, how do you plan to thank me?”
