Chapter 5: An Unusual Feeling
Lu Linqiao had been Jiang Yu’s friend for over ten years. She knew almost everything that had happened to Jiang Yu during that time.
For more than ten years, Jiang Yu had been focused on her work, keeping herself highly reserved. Whether during her youthful, ignorant years or as an adult, Jiang Yu had never had a girlfriend, not even an ambiguous relationship.
Hearing such words come from Jiang Yu was nothing short of astonishing.
Lu Linqiao was surprised for a moment, then smiled and said: “That’s wonderful! You’re an adult; having some needs is normal.”
Jiang Yu looked at Lu Linqiao, nodded, and lowered her eyes to deal with the steak on her plate.
“What’s your plan?” Lu Linqiao asked.
Jiang Yu: “Wait for a bit. It takes time to move from acquaintance to familiarity.”
“Emotional status and physical health are quite important factors. I shouldn’t be too rash.”
Lu Linqiao chuckled: “I agree.”
Jiang Yu didn’t have a large appetite. She put down her cutlery with half a steak remaining, and Lu Linqiao was at roughly the same point.
Her arms were still a little sore. Jiang Yu stretched: “Let’s sit here and rest for a while, and then head back?”
Without any objection, Lu Linqiao agreed to Jiang Yu’s suggestion.
They had arrived at the restaurant relatively early. It was now dinner time, and the restaurant was filling up, with almost every seat taken.
Jiang Yu now realized the restaurant’s environment was actually quite lovely. The table not far from them was against a wide, bright floor-to-ceiling window, next to a balcony with brown flooring set against a backdrop of majestic green mountains.
The view from that spot was likely excellent. Unfortunately, it seemed to have been reserved by someone in advance, as the entire area was empty.
Jiang Yu watched quietly. Almost in the very next instant, two people sat down in the empty space.
Both people had light blonde hair and similar styles of dress. The only difference was that the taller-looking woman was wearing a black athletic jacket.
She wore her hair in a high ponytail. Looking at her back, Jiang Yu felt a strange familiarity.
The woman in the jacket was seated facing Jiang Yu’s direction. It was an extremely beautiful face. She seemed slightly uncomfortable, and before long, she pulled down the zipper, revealing the vest underneath. It was a simple black vest with an intricate cutout four-leaf clover pattern.
At this moment, two images in Jiang Yu’s mind clicked together. She casually picked up her fork, played with a salad leaf, and looked toward the woman.
Noticing her slight distraction, Lu Linqiao asked: “What are you staring at?”
Jiang Yu shook her head, remaining silent for a brief moment.
Lu Linqiao turned around, following the direction of Jiang Yu’s gaze.
It was an exceptionally beautiful blonde woman; one could tell instantly she was mixed-race. Her features were pleasant, not aloof, but rather gentle, yet possessing a subtly profound, mature composure.
“She’s quite something.”
Jiang Yu gave a soft laugh and looked up at Lu Linqiao.
Jiang Yu continued to watch quietly. Just as she told Lu Linqiao, she made no aggressive move to proactively approach the woman.
Unconsciously, half an hour passed.
The women stood up, preparing to leave.
Jiang Yu withdrew her gaze, propped her chin on her elbow, checked the time, and decided to return to the climbing area after Lu Linqiao returned from the restroom.
But something unexpected happened.
After leaving their area, the two women walked straight toward her.
Jiang Yu looked around her in confusion. The next second, the sunlight in front of her was blocked.
“Sister Jiang Yu, what a coincidence! Meeting you here again.”
Jiang Yu looked at the young girl walking toward her, feeling like the girl looked vaguely familiar.
Rong Shi was a fan of Jiang Yu’s. Knowing Jiang Yu had slight face blindness, she spoke casually: “I’m the fan you met yesterday at the shooting venue.”
Jiang Yu politely stood up, first sincerely apologized for not recognizing her, and then greeted Rong Shi and the woman with her.
Rong Shi was very enthusiastic. Looking at Jiang Yu, she immediately asked: “Sister Jiang Yu, do you like rock climbing too?”
“My sister loves it too.”
Rong Shi spoke with natural familiarity, turning toward the expressionless Rong Wei beside her: “Oh, right, I forgot to introduce you. This is my sister.”
It was around 6 PM, and the sun was beginning to set, illuminating Rong Wei at a subtle angle. The light made her light blonde hair exceptionally beautiful. Her blue eyes seemed to contain a vast, rolling ocean, making it easy for one to sink into them.
Jiang Yu nodded politely. The two greeted each other, and then there was nothing more to say.
During the exchange, Lu Linqiao returned to the table. From a distance, she saw two people standing with Jiang Yu. She had overheard most of the conversation and immediately figured out who they were.
She extended her hand and smiled: “Hello there.”
Rong Shi was half-involved in the fashion industry and naturally recognized Lu Linqiao.
Rong Shi was slightly excited: “Aaaah, Sister Linqiao, you’re here too.”
Then, remembering the two women ran a company together, she added: “Oh, wait, it makes sense that you’re here.”
Lu Linqiao smiled, looking around: “Are you planning to stay here for a while?”
“How about we chat while we walk? Standing here is a bit awkward.”
Rong Shi nodded. Without waiting for Rong Wei’s response, she pulled her sister’s hand, and the two began walking toward the climbing gym with Jiang Yu.
Rong Shi and Lu Linqiao were both outgoing. They chatted happily during the walk. Quite naturally, they ended up walking side-by-side, leaving Jiang Yu and Rong Wei to walk parallel to each other.
Jiang Yu thought discreetly. There was a difference between politely holding back and remaining silent when an opportunity presented itself.
However, perhaps because this was the first time Jiang Yu had ever felt this kind of desire, and she was afraid of offending Rong Wei, her actions were not very smooth.
Jiang Yu lowered her eyes, contemplating how to open a conversation.
Up ahead, Lu Linqiao and Rong Shi were engrossed in their chat, making the silence between Jiang Yu and Rong Wei feel somewhat awkward.
Jiang Yu, in her athletic wear, looked slightly thinner than usual. Her curly long hair was tied into a high ponytail. Her aggressively beautiful face, silent at this moment, somehow made her seem more approachable.
The woman who hadn’t spoken much beside her finally said the first sentence.
“Is this your first time here?”
Jiang Yu turned her head, looking at Rong Wei: “Yes. I have some time off, so I came here to try it out.”
“I noticed you earlier in Area C. You looked very beautiful, very powerful.” Jiang Yu spoke naturally.
Consistent with her overall appearance, Jiang Yu’s voice was on the mature side, but her tone while complimenting was slightly enthusiastic, adding a subtle touch of unnoticed liveliness.
“Thank you for the compliment.”
“We should be close in age. You don’t need to use such formal address.” (referencing the use of ‘Nín/您’)
Jiang Yu nodded, smiling and agreeing. Seizing the opportunity, she asked: “Have you enjoyed climbing for a long time? You seem very experienced in it.”
Rong Wei was silent for a moment, as if thinking, then replied: “It’s been over ten years. I wouldn’t call it experience, just practice makes perfect.”
“The conditions at this gym are good. I come here often.”
Jiang Yu nodded. She paused as she reached a step, stopping to look at Rong Wei, and asked naturally: “Well, may I be so bold as to ask if you are busy recently, or if you have plans to return to the gym soon?”
Rong Wei nodded: “Not too busy. Yes, I will be back.”
“Could I trouble you with one thing?”
“I’ve just started this sport and still have many things I don’t quite understand. Could you spare some time to coach me?”
Hearing this, Rong Wei was silent for a moment, then turned her head to look at Jiang Yu.
Jiang Yu clearly saw her own reflection in Rong Wei’s icy blue pupils, and then heard her speak with an understatement: “I don’t coach, and I don’t take on beginners.”
Jiang Yu pursed her lips. Before she could voice an apology for her presumption, Rong Wei spoke again.
Her tone held a hint of amusement.
“However, if it’s for mutual exchange, I’d be very happy to.”
Jiang Yu: “Then I would be grateful.”
“Tomorrow at noon, still in Area C, would that work?”
In her ear, came Rong Wei’s soft affirmative reply.
As they parted, Jiang Yu proactively said one more thing to Rong Wei: “See you tomorrow.”
Leaving the climbing gym, the sky outside had completely darkened.
Rong Wei’s grandmother’s home was a manor near the gym. To save time, the sisters would stay at their grandmother’s house tonight.
In the car, Rong Shi chattered to Rong Wei.
“Ah, I really didn’t expect to see my goddess twice in just two days.”
“Ah, I know Sister Jiang Yu has a bit of face blindness, but I still hope that if there’s another chance, she’ll recognize me next time.”
Hearing this, Rong Wei looked seriously at Rong Shi.
This was Rong Shi’s second meeting with Jiang Yu, and Jiang Yu hadn’t recognized Rong Shi. Jiang Yu’s face blindness was indiscriminate.
Rong Wei lightly tapped her leg with her fingers, sincerely replying: “I’m afraid that might be difficult.”
Rong Shi vaguely sensed a deeper meaning in Rong Wei’s words, but she couldn’t imagine any connection between Rong Wei and Jiang Yu, so she continued regardless: “One must be brave enough to face challenges, don’t you think?”
This time, Rong Wei didn’t answer, just smiling and glancing at Rong Shi.
Because of the sudden plan to climb with Rong Wei the next day, Jiang Yu didn’t return to the city with Lu Linqiao. She found a hotel near the gym to stay, arriving around the same time as the Rong sisters.
She called the front desk to send up toiletries. After washing up and changing clothes, she lay on the bed, squeezing her thigh.
So, she was mixed-race and spoke Chinese.
Jiang Yu’s thoughts were becoming active.
It made sense; when cutting the steak earlier, Jiang Yu had already noticed something different about the woman. Most foreigners prefer medium-rare steak, and when cut, the plate would typically be filled with red juices. However, the steak on her plate showed no red juices when sliced.
Jiang Yu closed her eyes. For a moment, the woman’s image resurfaced in her mind.
The way she cut the steak was exceptionally elegant, like an aristocrat from an oil painting. Those bony, well-defined fingers looked even more seductive on the silver cutlery. The knuckles on the back of her hand protruded. The muscles that had been engorged with blood earlier had subsided, showing only a faint blue on the back of her hand. An occasional raised vein would disappear into the sleeve of her black athletic jacket, along with her strong, powerful forearm, like a graceful, lurking leopard.
Jiang Yu took a deep breath, resting her arm over her face, which felt a little hot and flushed.
Clearly, the lingering effect of this unusual feeling was far greater than she had anticipated.
In this moment, she suddenly thought of her contractual wife back in China.
A certain idea quietly stirred within her heart.
