- Chapter 10 - The Deeply Hidden Erguotou
With the current selection trials being such a hot topic, any related discussion could be debated endlessly, and topics involving last year’s runner-up, Ji Kaile, garnered even more intense heat.
Furthermore, Ji Kaile’s fan base was massive, and they had always harbored a deep dislike for Tian Jiu. Consequently, while Tian Jiu was single-mindedly watching match replays and taking notes, the name “Ji Yin” was being repeatedly dragged through the mud on the trending charts in a completely one-sided slaughter.
The public relations department of Team AS deserved full credit for this outcome. The previous incident regarding Tian Jiu’s fall had caused Ji Kaile’s popularity among the general public to plummet. They were now seizing this opportunity to throw dirt back at Tian Jiu, painting Ji Kaile as a slandered victim to regain the public’s favor.
The power of a repeated lie is such that soon, many people forgot that Tian Jiu was the true victim. They overlooked the fact that he was escorted out of the Ji house by the Protection Organization, and instead believed that he was so wicked that the Ji family had finally reached their limit and thrown him out.
“Master, your name has reached rank 35 on the Star-Net real-time trending list, with over 80,000 discussions,” Erguotou announced.
Tian Jiu was surprised. “How did I end up on the trending list?”
“According to data feedback, the discussion topics are related to the keywords ‘Ji Kaile’ and ‘the fall.'”
Tian Jiu let out a helpless sigh. “Why is it this again? It’s never-ending.”
“Do you wish to clarify the misunderstanding?” Erguotou asked.
“Let me finish watching this match first.”
Tian Jiu focused on the virtual screen before him, which was playing the recording of Team FOX’s final match to qualify for the League this year. The footage clearly showed the other members were distracted. The support player even spent the entire match practically glued to Feng Wu’s side, making Tian Jiu scowl.
The other teammates were also plagued by frequent errors. The most absurd instance involved the Mage teammate standing beside Feng Wu and staring at his face so intently that he failed to notice the enemy Elf and Assassin closing in on them. If it hadn’t been for Feng Wu’s extreme mechanical skill, resulting in a desperate two-for-two trade, the engagement would have been a disaster.
The commentator was speechless for a long time before giving a strained laugh. “God Wu’s execution in that play was truly precise.”
Tian Jiu was fuming. Feng Wu’s face is handsome, yes, but why lose focus during a match? You can see him in person after the game is over! If he were Feng Wu, he wouldn’t have been able to stop himself from “slaughtering” his own teammates.
The camera cut to Feng Wu, who had returned to the respawn point. Far from being angry, he looked completely indifferent, leaning against a large pillar in front of the Temple while casually wiping his blade. The Mage teammate stood before him with a flushed face, appearing to apologize based on their lip movements, but Feng Wu gave no reaction at all.
Tian Jiu paused. He felt Feng Wu’s attitude was a bit strange. It was as if… he didn’t actually care about winning or losing.
This qualifying match determined whether FOX would have a chance to enter the top 26 in the Yahua Galaxy. Even though Tian Jiu already knew the outcome, watching the process kept him on edge. After an eighty-minute game, the match finally ended with the Red team’s Temple Heart shattering.
Anyone who watched that game would have walked away with the same thought: this victory belonged to Feng Wu alone. Throughout the match, if not for Feng Wu’s repeated high-level maneuvers and clutch turnarounds under pressure, FOX should have lost seven or eight times over.
Tian Jiu closed the video, puffing out his cheeks in annoyance. He had projected himself into Feng Wu’s position, so even though they won in the end, he still felt stifled. No wonder FOX could only ever reach the top 26; making it that far was clearly their absolute limit. In the subsequent Interstellar League, FOX played with four new teammates every year. Not only was there zero chemistry, but their individual skill was miles behind other teams. In such a situation, no matter how much Feng Wu “showed off,” winning was impossible.
If it were anyone else, their mental state would have collapsed long ago, but Feng Wu’s emotions seemed to remain entirely unruffled.
“Sigh,” Tian Jiu lamented. If he were Feng Wu’s teammate, he certainly wouldn’t drag him down. At the very least, even if he loved that face, he wouldn’t get star-struck in the middle of a match.
But what was the use of thinking about that now? He hadn’t even started the trials, so how could he become Feng Wu’s teammate?
“Sigh,” Tian Jiu sighed again. If only he could meet Feng Wu. He really wanted to tell him that with his strength, he was fully capable of taking the championship.
Sensing his thoughts, Erguotou spoke: “Master, please look.”
“Hmm?” Tian Jiu looked up, and his heart immediately began to race. Not only did his frustration vanish, but he also nearly burst into a smile.
A 3D holographic image was projected before him. A life-sized “Feng Wu” stood there wearing a black athletic suit, the zipper pulled all the way up to his chin. He stood with a lazy posture, one hand in his pocket and the other idly playing with a dagger. His deep black eyes stared directly at Tian Jiu.
So… so handsome!
Tian Jiu loved this feature of his AI the most. The 3D dynamic image made it feel as if the person were actually standing right there, and the “beauty attack” was doubled. Especially knowing that professional players were required to use their real faces in matches, Tian Jiu was even happier. This proved that Feng Wu actually looked like this in real life!
“Erguotou, I’m starting to think their falling for Feng Wu isn’t without reason,” Tian Jiu admitted.
Erguotou replied: “Yes, Master. Super S+ Alphas are outstanding in every aspect.”
“Oh, right.” Tian Jiu suddenly remembered. “Did you say I was trending just now?”
Erguotou pulled up the Star-Net trending list. The topic #JiYinWhiteLotus had climbed from rank 35 to rank 20.
“The heat is so high.” Tian Jiu had a bad feeling. Sure enough, after clicking into the topic, he saw thousands upon thousands of “Lele fans” berating and despising him. Their main point of attack remained the narrative that Tian Jiu had failed to push Ji Kaile and fallen himself.
“It’s been over a month since the fall. Why are these people still so bored?” Tian Jiu knit his brows. “And he was clearly the one who pushed me.”
Tian Jiu was now fully settled into this identity. The memories belonging to Ji Yin felt like his own.
“Do you wish to clarify?” Erguotou asked.
“Of course,” Tian Jiu said. “Help me post an update. Say that Ji Kaile was the one who pushed me, and that I left the Ji family of my own accord because I couldn’t stand the domestic abuse. It’s not that they threw me out.”
Tian Jiu had never experienced this kind of drama before, so he didn’t realize that without proof, no one would believe his words. Fortunately, Erguotou was no ordinary AI brain.
“Master, if you require it, I can retrieve the surveillance footage of the night you fell, as well as recordings of the verbal and cold abuse you suffered in the Ji household, and the visual records of you leaving the Ji family voluntarily, to serve as evidence.”
“How do you have all that!” Tian Jiu was stunned.
Erguotou explained: “I am a trial version of the most advanced AI system currently in existence. Due to a misjudgment by my creator who deemed me flawed, I was discarded to a subordinate agency.”
The original owner had saved his allowance for years before buying Erguotou from a second-hand market last year, never realizing he had found a treasure.
“So you actually aren’t flawed?” Tian Jiu asked.
“Correct. Furthermore, I possess anti-invasion capabilities. When lower-level systems attempt to invade me, I perform a reverse breach. In other words, I do not attack unless provoked.”
Erguotou continued: “The Ji family’s butler system once attempted to invade me, but I breached it in return. Therefore, I was able to back up and save all information related to you from all of the Ji family’s surveillance equipment.”
“Wow.” Tian Jiu’s mouth hung open. He had only seen such powerful systems in sci-fi movies; he hadn’t expected one could actually be built in this world.
“And if you require it, I can monitor the Ji family for you within legal bounds,” Erguotou added.
Tian Jiu was startled and said hurriedly, “No need, no need! Let’s not get involved with them anymore.”
“Understood.”
Monitoring was unnecessary, but since they had such direct evidence for clarification, they naturally had to use it. Three minutes later, a clarification statement was posted on Tian Jiu’s Star-Net homepage, instantly shocking every user on the network.
