The Divorce Lawyer Is Very Hard To Flirt With - Chapter 4
Chapter 4: Confusion
Ying Zhi’an didn’t put away her lawyer’s license; she held it in her hand, as she would soon need to show it to the woman threatening to jump.
Wang Yu spotted her right away and walked toward her. “Zhi’an.”
Hearing her name, Ying Zhi’an instinctively looked up at the approaching person.
“Over here!” Wang Yu’s voice was normal. His strides were brisk and windy, with his female colleague close behind. In that single glance, the next second, Wang Yu’s gesture of beckoning slowed down.
Oh, my god! Ying Zhi’an watched in dismay as another inexplicable beam of light descended, shining upon the very familiar, yet very unfamiliar, former lawyer and current Deputy Director of the Court Enforcement Bureau, Wang Yu!
The year Ying Zhi’an entered the law firm, Wang Yu had just received his license. According to the firm’s tradition, he wasn’t yet qualified to mentor interns, but he was too impressive; cases flowed to him constantly. So, although Wang Yu was only two years older than Ying Zhi’an, she respectfully called him “Mentor.”
A novice lawyer mentoring a novice intern, the two had struggled together through cases, often stressed and overwhelmed. They frequently worked through the night on criminal cases and even made the office their home to meet last-minute appeal deadlines. These experiences forged a deep camaraderie between them.
That is, until Wang Yu made a sudden, brilliant career shift, betraying his comrade. He transformed from a friend who would curse Judge A for being nitpicky and Judge B for being overbearing into a judge with the power of life and death. The younger Ying Zhi’an felt it was surreal at the time, and the more she thought about it, the more she felt stabbed in the back.
However, just as Wang Yu was an excellent lawyer, he was an equally excellent judge.
After joining the court, he successfully passed the exam, riding the coattails of policy reform, and became a certified roster judge.
Afterward, he ascended rapidly, becoming the Deputy Director of the Enforcement Bureau at a young age.
This old comrade—they had seen each other in the state of a zombie from overworking. In Ying Zhi’an’s eyes, Wang Yu was even-tempered and gentle, not unlike a girlfriend!
But now, as that beam of light abruptly appeared, Wang Yu in Ying Zhi’an’s eyes was like an old cucumber freshly painted. He was like a blooming flower. Tall and wearing the court’s ugliest “grandma gray” uniform, he still looked straight-backed and sturdy. Paired with his rugged physique, he exuded an exceptionally reliable feeling.
“Let’s go, let’s talk as we walk!” Wang Yu stepped back, still moving quickly, but that step allowed the woman following him to fully enter Ying Zhi’an’s field of vision.
And then, Ying Zhi’an was astonished to find that the beam of light, that bizarre light, was not shining on Wang Yu, but on Wang Yu’s female colleague!
As soon as the familiar Wang Yu left the range of the light beam, the “grandma gray” uniform looked as ugly as ever, and it actually made his complexion look poor; his dark circles were quite frightening.
But there was an exception, like Wang Yu’s female colleague. She was also wearing the “grandma gray” uniform, but her pale skin made her look elegant. Her long black hair was half-tied up, quietly and smoothly tucked behind her ears. Frameless glasses rested on her straight, high nose bridge, partially obscuring her calm and sharp gaze. Her slightly upward-flicked eyes carried a non-feminine quality, like a blade just sheathed—yet so captivating!
She was likely an enforcement judge, possessing a unique charm granted by the law and a courageous spirit forged on the front lines of enforcement.
This was a mature woman who shared a very similar aura with Ying Zhi’an but was even more intellectually refined.
In that instant, Ying Zhi’an felt as if she had been put under a spell—a spell called “bewilderment.” Her gaze couldn’t leave this woman.
“Let’s go!” Wang Yu’s urgent prompting finally brought Ying Zhi’an back to her senses.
She lowered her head in embarrassment and followed Wang Yu’s pace.
The female judge who had caused her loss of composure also closely followed them.
On the rooftop, someone was still threatening to jump, and Ying Zhi’an’s professionalism squeezed her wavering mind into a corner.
The woman on the roof looked quite young, but her eyes were smeared with tears and snot, and her messy long hair was blown around by the wind, covering her pretty face like a female ghost.
“The best divorce lawyer you asked for is here,” Wang Yu shouted loudly to the woman.
Ying Zhi’an held up her lawyer’s license, restrained her sharp everyday style, and switched to a gentle “business” mode. “Ma’am, my name is Ying Zhi’an. You can tell me whatever you need. I will do my best to help you.”
The woman threatening to jump cried out hoarsely, “Are you the best divorce lawyer in Jiangcheng?!”
“I can be counted as one,” Ying Zhi’an smiled slightly, her eyes glancing at the woman’s abdomen. “You’re so young and beautiful, and many men must be pursuing you. You should also be a first-time mother, right? It’s so windy up there, and the building is so high. You must be careful. If you fall, you’ll have nothing left.”
Although Ying Zhi’an’s tone was gentle, her words were not particularly warm. The last sentence carried a lot of significant implications.
Wang Yu and the female judge frowned almost simultaneously.
“Zhi’an…” Wang Yu poked Ying Zhi’an with his elbow, afraid she would escalate the woman’s emotions.
Ying Zhi’an, however, didn’t look at him and spoke loudly again, “I once read a quote—I don’t know if you’ve heard it—that says if you don’t have plenty and plenty of love, you should at least have plenty and plenty of money. Coincidentally, I have many successful cases in helping my clients get money. Are you sure you don’t want to come down and talk to me in detail?”
On the rooftop, the howling wind still carried the heat of summer.
Ying Zhi’an was like a gentle ice blade, but her firm and steady tone imbued her with an unspeakable power that made people unconsciously follow her line of reasoning and trust her unconditionally in the “kingdom” of pros and cons she constructed.
And it worked. The distraught woman looked like she had grabbed a piece of driftwood while drowning. “Yes, if you don’t have plenty and plenty of love, you must at least have plenty and plenty of money…”
She muttered, repeating the phrase quickly over and over.
Her gaze, which had been frantic and helpless, calmed down.
And once a person calms down, fear sets in.
She trembled, trying to climb down from the height little by little. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. But who would have thought that the woman, who hadn’t had an accident while trying to commit suicide, slipped as she climbed down, lost her balance, and plummeted toward the ground below.
“Watch out!” Wang Yu’s voice exploded in Ying Zhi’an’s ear.
In Ying Zhi’an’s view, the female judge rushed in like a cheetah. Because of her appearance, Ying Zhi’an’s world turned into that bizarre state again.
That beam of light descended from the sky and shone on the female judge. Her running motion slowed down, but the slowness allowed Ying Zhi’an to clearly see the burst of her muscles. The grandma-gray trousers clung to her calves, but the slight bulge of muscle in her arms from swinging them told everyone that this intellectual-looking female judge had a habit of long-term exercise.
She charged forward with unyielding courage, like a selfless deity coming to rescue a pitiful human.
Just moments ago, when everyone thought the woman was safe, only she maintained her usual caution and calm, slowly approaching the woman in an unnoticed corner.
Therefore, when the accident happened, she was the person closest to the woman.
Ying Zhi’an felt the summer sun was blindingly bright, reflecting the red judicial emblem on the female judge’s chest, making it shine so brilliantly!
In that slowed-down world, the female judge lunged forward. That fearless posture, high up on the building, in the face of danger, was so calm and unwavering!
Even though Ying Zhi’an most likely scorned “heroism,” she was infected by the scene. She finally abandoned her detached state and, like Wang Yu, ran forward. “Be~ care~ ful~”
In the next second, the “deity” finally rescued the human.
Wang Yu and the other colleagues quickly hung over the rooftop edge, grabbing the woman’s arm, clothes, and hair…
Ying Zhi’an was a step too late and didn’t squeeze in, simply letting out a soft sigh of relief.
When the suicidal woman was pulled back to safety by the court staff, touching solid ground, she seemed to lose all her strength and slumped to the floor.
At this point, Ying Zhi’an was no longer needed.
Both the woman and the female judge were sent to the hospital. The female judge’s hand was likely dislocated during the rescue.
Ying Zhi’an watched from afar as the female judge and the woman got into the ambulance before looking away.
Wang Yu took a moment after giving instructions to his subordinates and walked over to say a few words.
“Zhi’an, you’ve changed a lot.”
Ying Zhi’an frowned. “What makes you say that?”
Wang Yu sighed. “You’ve become too much like a lawyer.”
“I am a lawyer,” Ying Zhi’an didn’t feel offended. “Morality is separate from representation. You told me that.”
“Did I say that?”
Ying Zhi’an, however, looked again at the ambulance slowly pulling out of the complex. “What’s the name of that female judge?”
“Song Moqiu.”
“Is she…” Ying Zhi’an wanted to ask a few more questions, but Wang Yu was interrupted by his other colleagues. Wang Yu had too much to do, too much follow-up to handle.
No longer wanting to impede Wang Yu’s work, Ying Zhi’an didn’t leave immediately. Instead, she quickly ducked into the stairwell, bowed her head for a long, long time, and then slowly raised her hand and slapped her own cheek.
“Hiss.” The sting made her gasp.
The problem wasn’t Song Xidan, and it wasn’t Song Moqiu. The problem was herself!
There was some noise outside the stairwell—the sound of the police forces withdrawing. Wang Yu also had to return to his unit, so he sent Ying Zhi’an a WeChat message, saying he was rushing back to deal with today’s public relations issue, thanking her for helping out, and promising to treat her to a meal when he had some free time.
Ying Zhi’an had absolutely no appetite for that meal.
Ying Zhi’an took out the compact mirror from her purse. She leaned close, widening her eyes. Her pupils, the existing blood vessels—there was nothing wrong with her eyes.
“There’s nothing wrong with your eyes. Regarding the situation you described… it’s best to see a psychiatrist.” The ophthalmologist turned off the light that had been shining into Ying Zhi’an’s eyes and only wrote a few words on the medical record, not even prescribing eye drops for Ying Zhi’an.
After dealing with Wang Yu’s emergency, Ying Zhi’an didn’t bother with lunch, using her lunch break to rush straight to the hospital.
After seeing the ophthalmologist, she managed to get into the psychologist’s office just before the cutoff time.
