The Devil's Contract Lover - Chapter 4
“It’s me.”
The word “me” was delivered with a powerful presence and a familiar tone that immediately brought the landlord to mind. Yao Yuan, still groggy and without changing out of her pajamas, pattered over to open the door.
“I’ll get it.” Xingkong hooked her arm, and in the space of a breath, their clothes transitioned from pajamas to formal wear.
The landlord, pushing her belly forward, squeezed into the doorway and immediately locked eyes with the devil’s lustrous gaze. She took two exaggerated steps back, nearly bumping into the two people following her.
“Oh my, who is she?” Although she was clearly asking about Yao Yuan, who was huddled timidly behind Xingkong, her eyes were fixed on the seemingly amiable Xingkong.
The exquisite features blurred the boundary of gender, radiating pure… terror!
The dazed look in the landlord’s eyes was instantly shattered. With a cry, she covered her face and started to fall backward. Fortunately, the man and woman behind her were quick, holding her up, one on each side.
Yao Yuan: “She’s my classmate.”
Xingkong: “She is her lover.”
Yao Yuan gritted her teeth, stamped her foot, and immediately conceded: “Ah, well, yes… a girlfriend.”
The three people outside widened their eyes, and a long silence followed.
Only then did Yao Yuan realize a very important matter that she should have considered clearly: the devil, she… yes, the devil was her! Regardless of whether the original form was she, he, or it, the current presentation was female.
While she didn’t mind that the executor of the lover’s contract was in a female form, quite a few people seemed to mind a woman having a female lover.
I hope these people don’t start swearing. The devil’s neck had no leash.
“Extra money.” The landlord didn’t dare look at Xingkong this time, only staring at Yao Yuan: “Adding a person here means you have to pay extra.” At least she didn’t say anything more.
“But our scope of activity hasn’t changed…”
“An extra person is an extra hassle.” The landlord pointed to the two people behind her: “My niece and her boyfriend both have to pay half more.”
“Fine, wait, your niece and her boyfriend are living next door?”
“Yes.”
“We only have one toilet here, wouldn’t it be inconvenient for a man?”
The landlord gave her a strange look: “Oh, you’re a young lady, renting a room and still expecting to only live with girls?”
“Exactly! What’s so inconvenient? You two are homosexuals, are you scared of him?” The landlord’s niece rolled her eyes, and after saying half a sentence, she and her boyfriend in low-rise jeans started to giggle and writhe, though it was unclear what they were laughing at.
Yao Yuan felt like losing her temper, but after careful consideration, she had no standing to do so. If she were alone, she would have definitely asked for her rent back and walked out.
Glancing at Xingkong beside her, Yao Yuan sighed internally: Xingkong isn’t even human. The danger level wasn’t just greater than a man; it was greater than an unleashed leopard.
“It’s settled then. I won’t ask for an extra deposit, just pay half more next time you pay the rent, you’re getting a good deal.” The landlord swiftly led the young couple next door. Outside the wooden board, there were clanging noises, perhaps furniture being dragged across the floor.
The door closed automatically. Xingkong reached out a finger to smooth the crease in Yao Yuan’s brow: “You don’t need to worry about sanitation. I have thoroughly sterilized it with magic.”
“That’s too much trouble for you. The toilet is considered shared…”
“They will use [Other Places], they won’t bother us.”
“…Thank you.” Yao Yuan looked at Xingkong genuinely, regretting for the first time that she had not been polite enough yesterday. Even though her invitation was rejected, the devil was still helping her in her own way.
Xingkong suddenly mused: “Humans are truly fascinating.”
“How so?”
“They have a concept of territory and also divide up their space, yet they don’t mind unrelated people stepping all over their ground.”
Yao Yuan felt a little helpless. When sharing an apartment, facilities like the toilet and kitchen, which are public, naturally have no privacy: “Resources are limited. Not everyone in your world can occupy a large piece of territory, can they?”
The devil smiled but did not answer.
“I rented a space from the landlord, so this is the landlord’s [territory]; I am merely a passerby who pays the rent.”
“Where is your territory?”
“There’s no such place.” Yao Yuan proactively took the devil’s hand: “Come out with me.”
“Alright.”
Walking up from the subway passage, they stepped onto the pedestrian street, where the surrounding crowd was bustling.
“How about this shop?” Yao Yuan looked up, pointing her finger at the pajamas in the display window.
“What kind of pajamas does Xiaoyuan want me to wear?” Xingkong had changed into a plaid shirt with casual pants underneath. Against the backdrop of the shopping street, she really looked like a human.
“Don’t say things so strangely… Wait, I think I told you before that I wanted you to call me Xiaoyao?”
Xingkong grasped her wrist and walked into the shop next door: “I asked your heart.”
“I thought you said you couldn’t read minds—” “Welcome~” Yao Yuan’s eyes met the saleswoman’s, and she felt a rush of goosebumps when she saw the brand logo. It was one of those killer shops with prices one or two zeros higher than what she could afford!
As expected of a downtown pedestrian street, you’ll accidentally step on a landmine that will empty your wallet.
“I prefer the clothes next door…” She turned her head, blushing.
A pink dress was immediately handed to her: “Try this one.”
“No, I won’t try it. I’m leaving.”
“I want to see you wear this one.”
The weight on her shoulder shifted to her waist. The way she was being held, without room for refusal, was very simple.
Her feet left the ground, and the dress was draped over her.
“Let go of me!”
The fitting room door opened in front of them, and closed 3 seconds later, leaving the startled sales assistant outside.
Placed on a stool like a doll, Yao Yuan defiantly looked up: “I don’t even want the house; don’t think clothes can bribe me! A perfect lover has nothing to do with money!”
“I wasn’t planning to bribe you with cheap things.”
“Expensive things won’t work either… Are you listening?”
Xingkong knelt down swiftly on one knee and lifted Yao Yuan’s calf.
The sandals were on the floor before she could protest, and a pair of simple-looking but expensive black leather shoes fit her perfectly.
“Stand up and try them?”
The shoes looked a bit thick, but they didn’t feel heavy at all on her feet. The inside was unbelievably snug, requiring no compromise from her feet.
“Next, the dress.”
“Oh… Wait a moment!”
The buttons popped open automatically at the sweep of a slender finger, and the strap-free short dress slipped down to her ankles.
The pink dress covered her skin. Her hands subconsciously remained in a resistant posture, refusing to face the mirror.
“Do you like it?” Xingkong’s voice went straight to her heart in the small space.
“It’s okay, but I don’t need it. I only like thrifty people.”
She said this very reluctantly. She really liked the dress, but something so expensive shouldn’t belong to her.
There was a term in the world called cost-performance; it wasn’t her or the dress’s fault.
“Lying children must be punished.” The devil’s movement was like a dance, rotating to make her dance partner face her.
The arrogant star and the lake of courage met each other, and small ripples appeared on the surface of the lake.
“Do whatever you want.” Yao Yuan pursed her lips slightly, and in the next second, her pupils contracted.
The star was drawing nearer, and the rose-colored lips were moving toward her face.
She didn’t close her eyes, and neither did the devil. What was swirling in their eyes at that moment was definitely not love…
“Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.”
“Hello?” Yao Yuan pushed the devil away as fast as she could and picked up the vibrating phone. Xingkong adjusted her collar nonchalantly and stood beside her.
“Moonstone, are you really not attending the tea party next week?”
That clear voice was… ah, it was the group administrator. She calmed her turbulent heart with scattered thoughts.
“Admin, I really—” “Are you really going to lie to me?”
The similar words startled Yao Yuan, but thankfully, what followed was completely different.
“I did a divination; your current job won’t last long. Besides, you don’t work on the weekend, so come to the tea party and relax.”
The voice on the phone complemented the devil’s slightly sarcastic smile: Neither my friends nor the devil think I can take a job seriously?!
“Let me be honest with you…”
“Free room and board on a luxury cruise ship.”
“Of course, I have time!”
