- Chapter 8 - Rainy Day, Silly Girl Do You Want to Catch a Cold?
Su Yang practically escaped from Wen Yusheng’s dormitory.
Her heart was thumping like a drum, and her cheeks were hot enough to fry an egg. The sensation of Wen Yusheng leaning against her stomach just now, combined with that weary, dependent phrase—”Let me lean on you for a while”—played on a loop in her mind like a magic incantation.
What is going on?
As Su Yang ran downstairs, she desperately tried to build up her psychological defenses.
The senior was just too tired and used me as a pillow. Yes, that’s it. She sees me as a reliable younger sister, which is why she showed her vulnerability in front of me.
She’s straight, a “steel-straight” girl. She likes the kind of guys who are sunny and handsome; how could she have any other thoughts about a girl?
Moreover, the other person is Senior Wen.
Senior Wen is so beautiful, so excellent—she’s like the moon in the sky, an existence I can only look up to.
Su Yang took a deep breath of the cool night air, forcibly suppressing those messy thoughts.
That’s right, my feelings for the Senior are just pure sisterly affection, wanting to protect her!
So she told herself.
But that night, she still suffered from insomnia.
Every time she closed her eyes, she felt the sensation of Wen Yusheng’s soft hair brushing against her abdomen and that cold, reassuring woody fragrance.
The next day, Su Yang went to training with faint dark circles under her eyes.
To shake the images she shouldn’t be having out of her head, she trained exceptionally hard today. She added ten kilograms to her weighted squats, ran ten more sets of shuttle runs than usual, and finally, during core strength training, she pushed herself until her abs cramped, leaving her paralyzed on the mat, unwilling to move.
“That’s enough, give it a rest,” her teammate Zhao Jie said, unable to watch any longer, handing her a bottle of water. “Anyone who didn’t know better would think you’d been dumped, the way you’re torturing yourself.”
“You’re the one who got dumped!” Su Yang retorted feebly, taking the water and gulping down more than half of it.
The exhaustion following the intense exercise finally caused her brain to temporarily stop its wild thoughts. She lay on the mat, staring at the high dome of the gymnasium, letting herself go blank.
There was a public elective class in the afternoon; after class, she would have to go to the library to find the Senior. Just the thought of seeing Wen Yusheng made Su Yang feel much of her fatigue dissipate.
However, plans cannot keep up with changes.
At two in the afternoon, the weather was fine with the sun hanging high. But just past three, the sky turned dark without any warning.
The clouds were like ink someone had overturned, spreading rapidly across the sky. Immediately after, a gale broke out, making the windows of the training hall buzz and rattle.
“Holy crap, the weather changed way too fast!” Zhao Jie ran to the window to take a look, clicking his tongue. “Looks like a massive rainstorm is coming.”
Su Yang sat up, her heart skipping a beat.
It was raining.
Her first thought wasn’t about how she would get back to her dorm later, but about Wen Yusheng.
She remembered clearly that Wen Yusheng had no classes this afternoon; she had said she would be at the library all day researching materials to prepare for next week’s paper.
When the Senior went out, did she bring an umbrella?
Su Yang’s heart instantly tightened.
Knowing Wen Yusheng, someone so devoted to her studies and work, she most likely hadn’t paid attention to the weather forecast. The library wasn’t close to the Senior’s dormitory; it was a ten-minute walk. With rain this heavy, how would she get back?
No, I have to go pick up the Senior.
The moment this thought surfaced, Su Yang could no longer sit still.
She leaped up from the ground, grabbed her towel to haphazardly wipe her face, and then rushed toward the locker room.
“Hey, Yangyang, where are you going? It’s pouring outside!” Zhao Jie shouted from behind.
“I’m going to deliver an umbrella!” Su Yang’s voice drifted back from the locker room.
She changed out of her sweat-soaked training clothes at top speed, pulled on a dry T-shirt, and then, without a second thought, grabbed the largest black umbrella from the corner of the dorm and plunged straight into the curtain of rain.
The rain was even heavier than she had imagined.
Bean-sized raindrops smashed down without warning, as dense as a giant water net, instantly enveloping the entire world in a white haze. The rain hit the umbrella surface with a rhythmic, thunderous roar that made her ears ache.
Su Yang was practically running against the gale and rain.
The wind was strong, making the umbrella in her hand almost impossible to hold. Rainwater flowed down the edge of the umbrella, quickly soaking her pant legs and shoes. The icy water pouring into her shoes felt uncomfortable.
But she couldn’t care about any of that.
Her mind was entirely filled with Wen Yusheng.
She imagined the Senior trapped in the library, looking at the heavy rain outside with a face full of helplessness and confusion. At the thought of this image, Su Yang’s heart tightened even more, and her strides grew even larger.
She had to be faster, even faster. She couldn’t let the Senior wait too long.
Meanwhile, inside the library, Wen Yusheng was indeed standing by the window, watching the torrential rain outside.
However, there wasn’t a trace of anxiety or helplessness on her face. She just watched quietly, her gaze calm.
The sudden rainstorm had disrupted her plans, but it didn’t bother her. She had already messaged the family driver to have him pick her up at the library entrance in half an hour.
She was just about to turn back to her seat to continue reading.
Just then, her gaze was drawn to a figure in the distant curtain of rain. It was a tall figure, braving the wind and rain, running toward the library with all their might.
The rain was too heavy for her to see the person’s face clearly. But she still recognized that ponytail, swaying in the wind and rain yet stubbornly tied high, in a single glance.
It was Su Yang.
Wen Yusheng’s heart felt as though it had been gently squeezed by a warm hand. She was somewhat stunned.
She hadn’t expected Su Yang to come looking for her in such heavy rain. This was not within her plan. All her “accidental encounters” and all her “displays of weakness” were meticulously designed.
But this time, it wasn’t.
This was Su Yang’s own choice. It was this simple-minded “puppy” who, upon seeing the wind and rain, thought first and foremost of coming to shield her.
Wen Yusheng stood quietly by the window, watching that figure get closer and closer. She saw Su Yang stop on the steps at the library entrance, forcefully fold her umbrella, and then, while stomping the water off her feet, rush into the library lobby.
Wen Yusheng did not move. She just stood there, waiting for Su Yang to find her.
Sure enough, after a few seconds, a panting Su Yang appeared in her line of sight.
“Sen… Senior!” Su Yang’s eyes brightened instantly when she saw her. She ran over in two or three steps. “You really are here! Are you okay?”
Su Yang looked a bit disheveled. Her hair was dampened by the rain, with a few strands of wet hair clinging to her cheeks. The hem of her T-shirt and her pant legs were completely soaked, dripping water. She looked like a “drowned cat” just pulled out of the water.
Those eyes were filled with anxiety, concern, and the relief and peace of mind from having found her.
At that moment, Wen Yusheng’s heart was instantly filled with an unfamiliar, sour, yet warm emotion.
“I’m fine.” Her voice was much softer than usual. “Why did you come?”
“I guessed you definitely didn’t bring an umbrella, so I came to pick you up.” Su Yang said it as if it were the most natural thing in the world. She shook the large black umbrella in her hand, which was still dripping water, as if showing off a trophy. “Luckily I came! Otherwise, how would you have gotten back?”
Looking at her smug little expression, Wen Yusheng couldn’t help but want to smile. She didn’t tell Su Yang that she had actually already called for a car.
She simply nodded and said softly, “Yes, luckily you came.”
The rain eased slightly, but it showed no sign of stopping.
“Let’s go, Senior. I’ll walk you back to the dorm,” Su Yang said as she opened the umbrella naturally.
“Okay.”
Wen Yusheng followed Su Yang into the rain.
The space under the umbrella was very small—so small that the two of them had to stay very close. Subconsciously, Su Yang tilted the majority of the umbrella toward Wen Yusheng’s side, fearing that even a drop of rain would hit her.
Wen Yusheng could smell that unique scent on Su Yang, a mix of rainwater and faint laundry detergent—clean and pleasant. She could also feel Su Yang’s body temperature, scorching from the run, continuously transferring over from beside her.
The two walked in silence, with only the sound of raindrops hitting the umbrella and the splashing of feet in puddles.
Wen Yusheng turned her head slightly to look at Su Yang. The girl’s profile was very smooth, her nose bridge high, and her lip color very pale; because of the recent run, she was still panting slightly.
Wen Yusheng’s gaze moved down from her profile, and then, her pupils constricted slightly.
She saw that Su Yang’s left shoulder, from top to bottom, was completely soaked. Rainwater flowed down her black T-shirt, making the fabric cling tightly to her body, outlining the firm lines of her shoulder and arm.
On her own side, however, it was dry and comfortable; not even the hem of her skirt had been touched by a drop of water.
Wen Yusheng’s heart felt as if it had been sharply pricked by something.
This silly girl.
Doesn’t she know to move the umbrella toward herself a bit?
Doesn’t she know that she could also get cold and get sick?
An indescribable emotion surged in Wen Yusheng’s heart. It wasn’t calculation, nor was it exploitation; it was a most pure heartache originating from deep within.
She thought she couldn’t let this continue.
When they were still a short distance from Wen Yusheng’s dormitory building, Wen Yusheng suddenly stopped.
“What’s wrong, Senior?” Su Yang turned back to look at her, puzzled.
Wen Yusheng didn’t speak. She reached out, not to take the umbrella handle, but directly grabbed Su Yang’s arm—which had been chilled by the rain—and forcefully pulled her toward herself.
Caught off guard, Su Yang bumped straight into Wen Yusheng’s embrace. The umbrella shook violently due to the sudden movement.
Su Yang’s mind went blank. She could feel Wen Yusheng’s soft body pressed tightly against her, smell the cold fragrance in her hair, and feel the hand gripping her arm exerting slight pressure.
“Sen… Senior?”
“You silly girl.”
Wen Yusheng’s voice came from above her head, carrying a hint of raspy anger she had never heard before.
Su Yang looked up, meeting Wen Yusheng’s complex eyes. In those eyes, there was heartache, helplessness, and a trace of… deep emotion that she couldn’t understand.
“Do you want to catch a cold?”
Wen Yusheng stared at her, asking word by word. Her other hand reached up, gently brushing away a drop of rain from Su Yang’s cheek, but the temperature of her fingertips was even cooler than that drop of rain.
