- Chapter 11 - Library 2: She Wanted to Touch Her Face
Her shoulder suddenly grew heavy.
A furry head, carrying a warm breath, rested against Wen Yusheng’s shoulder without any warning.
Wen Yusheng’s body stiffened instantly.
Her first reaction was to frown.
She disliked overly intimate physical contact with others. This was a habit she had developed since childhood and a method of self-protection she had learned within a complex family environment. Any sudden approach would cause her to instinctively raise her defensive thorns.
She wanted to immediately push away this person who knew no bounds and dared to fall asleep while she was working.
Her hand had already been raised, prepared to shove the head resting on her shoulder away.
But when her gaze fell upon that sleeping profile, her movements—as if possessed by a ghost or a god—stopped.
Su Yang was truly exhausted.
She was sleeping very deeply. Her long eyelashes cast a small, quiet shadow beneath her eyes, and her lips were slightly parted, her breathing steady and long. On that face that was always full of vitality, all the spirited energy had receded, leaving only an undefended purity and exhaustion belonging to youth.
As Wen Yusheng looked at her, the slight displeasure of being disturbed dissipated silently.
She remembered the faint dark circles under Su Yang’s eyes this morning.
She remembered how Su Yang had sprinted a hundred meters from the training hall the moment class ended just to snag a seat for her.
She remembered how Su Yang, despite being so tired her body felt like it was falling apart, had forced herself to stay awake just to sit here and accompany her.
This idiot.
Wen Yusheng let out a helpless sigh in her heart.
In the end, she did not push her away.
She merely adjusted her sitting posture, making her shoulder more stable so that Su Yang could lean more comfortably.
After completing this movement, Wen Yusheng herself froze for a moment.
When had she become so patient, so… considerate?
She chalked it up to a form of indulgence toward her “possession.”
After all, this was her personally certified “guardian” and “exclusive study companion.” She was the little dog she kept by her side for amusement and to act as a shield.
It was only natural for an owner to be kind to their pet.
This was how Wen Yusheng convinced herself.
She turned her gaze back to the computer screen, intending to continue the train of thought that had just been interrupted.
But this time, no matter how she tried, she couldn’t take it in.
The sense of weight and temperature coming from her shoulder was so clear that she could not ignore it.
What she could ignore even less was the unique scent on Su Yang’s body.
It wasn’t the scent of any perfume.
It was a very clean, refreshing scent. It was like a quilt that had just been dried in the sun, mixed with the faint soapy fragrance of laundry detergent, and a hint of the healthy scent of sweat unique to student-athletes.
It was the scent of sunshine.
Wen Yusheng closed her eyes and took a light breath.
Her own body always carried a cold, woody fragrance. It was her favorite perfume and the weapon she used to isolate herself from the outside world and protect herself. That scent was calm and detached; like the person herself, it made people hesitate to approach.
But the scent on Su Yang was the complete opposite.
That scent was warm, passionate, and full of vitality—like a ray of light that could easily pierce through all her disguises and defenses, reaching the softest place in her heart.
Wen Yusheng discovered that she didn’t seem to hate it; she even… liked this scent a little bit.
She liked this feeling of being surrounded by sunshine.
The air conditioning in the library was running very high.
Wen Yusheng noticed that while Su Yang was asleep, her body would unconsciously curl into a ball, as if searching for a heat source.
She knitted her brows.
This idiot, daring to sleep in the library wearing so little, aren’t you afraid of catching a cold?
She hesitated for a moment, then slowly took off the cream-colored knit cardigan she was wearing.
Her movements were very light and slow, for fear of waking the person sleeping soundly beside her.
She took the cardigan, which still carried her own body heat, and gently draped it over Su Yang’s body.
The soft knit sweater covered most of Su Yang’s body, blending the scent of sunshine with her own cold, woody fragrance.
It formed a new, more complex, and more reassuring scent.
As Wen Yusheng finished this, a strange sense of satisfaction arose in her heart.
It was like placing an exclusive brand on her own possession.
Just then, a small commotion came from not far away.
A few girls were whispering and looking over at them, their faces wearing excited and gossiping expressions.
“Look, look! It’s Senior Wen Yusheng from the Economics Department and Su Yang from the PE College!”
“Heavens, they’re sitting so close! Did Su Yang fall asleep?”
“Senior Wen even put her own clothes on her! What kind of divine plot is this? This is too indulgent!”
“I knew something was going on between them! I saw Su Yang braving the heavy rain to bring Senior Wen an umbrella last time!”
Although those voices were kept very low, in the quiet library, they still drifted over intermittently.
Wen Yusheng’s hearing was very good.
Naturally, she heard them.
If it were any other time, she would certainly find it annoying and would use a cold glare to make those people shut up.
But today, she didn’t.
She only cast a faint glance in that direction; there was no warning in her eyes, nor any displeasure.
She even had the presence of mind to think that it seemed her relationship with Su Yang, in the eyes of others, was already quite unusual.
That was fine.
It saved her the trouble of exerting effort to manufacture “accidental encounters” and “coincidences.”
Wen Yusheng withdrew her gaze and looked back at the computer screen.
But her mind was no longer on those dry data points at all.
She could feel that Su Yang, leaning on her shoulder, seemed to move slightly in her sleep.
The girl’s cheek, unconsciously, rubbed against her shoulder like a pampered kitten.
Wen Yusheng’s body stiffened once more.
That soft, warm sensation was even clearer and more distressing than the leaning from before.
Through the thin fabric, she seemed to feel the delicate skin on Su Yang’s face and those slightly pouting lips.
Wen Yusheng’s breathing skipped a beat.
She had lived for twenty-two years, and for the first time, she had such a strong, uncontrollable physiological reaction to someone’s proximity.
Her heart felt as if it had been lightly brushed by a feather—itchy and tingling.
This feeling was very foreign.
And also… not bad.
“Senior…”
Just then, Su Yang let out a muffled murmur in her sleep.
Her voice was very light and soft, thick with sleepiness, sounding like she was acting spoiled.
Wen Yusheng’s heart was struck once again by this “Senior.”
She lowered her head, looking at this sleeping face so close at hand.
Under the soft lights of the library, Su Yang’s skin looked even fairer, and the tiny peach fuzz on her face was clearly visible. Her lips were slightly parted because she was asleep, revealing a glimpse of her white teeth.
She looked… very kissable.
The moment this thought popped up, Wen Yusheng startled herself.
Was she crazy?
How could she have such a thought about a girl, a junior two years younger than her who was still so silly?
She was Wen Yusheng.
She was the Wen Yusheng who was always calm, always rational, and always kept everything under her control.
How could she allow herself to produce such improper, out-of-control emotions for a “pet” who was outside of her plan?
Wen Yusheng’s gaze instantly turned cold.
She wanted to push Su Yang away immediately and make her get out of her world.
But just as her hand was raised again, prepared to put the action into effect.
Su Yang moved again.
She seemed to feel cold, and her body shrunk further toward Wen Yusheng’s side.
Her head slid down from Wen Yusheng’s shoulder and finally came to rest steadily upon Wen Yusheng’s lap.
Not only that, her two hands unconsciously wrapped around Wen Yusheng’s waist.
The whole person was like an octopus, holding Wen Yusheng firmly.
Wen Yusheng: “…”
She froze completely.
She could feel the two strong, powerful arms at her waist; she could feel the weight of the head resting on her lap; she could feel Su Yang’s warm breath, through her thin skirt, puffing onto her skin again and again.
Wen Yusheng felt all the blood in her body rushing toward the top of her head.
She had lived for twenty-two years and had never been in such an intimate posture with anyone.
This had completely exceeded the scope of her cognition.
Her mind went blank; all her calmness and rationality went on strike at this moment.
She looked at the culprit in her arms who was sleeping without any defenses and even using her as a human-shaped pillow, feeling both angry and helpless.
Push her away?
In this current posture, how was she supposed to push?
Not push her away?
Was she really going to let her hold her like this and sleep until the end of time?
Wen Yusheng felt she had fallen into a dilemma.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down.
She looked down once more at Su Yang’s sleeping face.
Perhaps because she had found a comfortable position, Su Yang slept even more deeply. Her brow smoothed out, and the corners of her mouth even turned up slightly, as if she were having a beautiful dream.
Looking at her like this, the bit of anger in Wen Yusheng’s heart vanished inexplicably again.
Forget it.
She thought.
Just let her sleep a little longer.
Anyway… being held by such a warm, large dog that smelled like sunshine felt… quite comfortable.
Wen Yusheng gave up the struggle.
She even adjusted her sitting posture to allow Su Yang to sleep more peacefully.
She readjusted the knit cardigan over Su Yang, wrapping her up tightly.
Having done all this, she looked up and found that the few gossiping girls across from them were so shocked their jaws were about to drop.
Wen Yusheng didn’t bother to acknowledge them.
She turned her gaze back to her computer screen, but she couldn’t take in a single word.
All of her attention was occupied by this uninvited guest in her arms.
She could clearly feel Su Yang’s steady heartbeat and her warm breath.
This feeling was very wonderful.
It was like possessing a warm little sun that belonged only to her.
Wen Yusheng looked at Su Yang’s face, which appeared exceptionally clean even in her sleep, and—as if possessed—reached out a hand.
Her fingertips trembled slightly in the air.
She thought she just wanted to brush away that naughty stray hair on her cheek.
Yes, just that.
Wen Yusheng’s hand slowly approached that sleeping face.
Closer and closer, closer and closer.
So close she could almost feel the temperature of Su Yang’s skin.
For the first time, Wen Yusheng experienced a pure impulse that was not within her plan.
She wanted… to touch her face.
