- Chapter 10 - Library: The Exclusive Study Companion
When Su Yang returned to the dormitory, she was still in a daze.
She drifted into the bathroom like a sleepwalking soul, turned on the water heater, stripped off her soaked clothes, and stood under the showerhead, letting the warm current wash over her ice-cold body.
It wasn’t until the hot water turned her skin a faint shade of red that she felt her heart, which had been leaping into her throat, finally settle down a little.
After finishing her shower, she changed into clean pajamas, but she ran into a dilemma when it came to dealing with that light gray cashmere scarf.
The scarf was damp with rain and carried the warmth and scent of her own neck; it definitely needed to be washed.
But… how should she wash it?
Throw it straight into the washing machine?
No, no. Su Yang immediately rejected that idea. This was cashmere, and more importantly, it was Senior Wen’s scarf. What if she ruined it?
Take it to the dry cleaners?
That didn’t seem right either. This was something the Senior had worn close to her body, and it still carried her scent. Entrusting it to a stranger made Su Yang feel a bit uneasy.
She agonized in the bathroom for a long time before finally making a decision.
She would wash it by hand.
Su Yang carefully filled a basin with lukewarm water, poured in a bit of the mildest-scented laundry detergent she usually used, and then gently placed the scarf inside.
The soft cashmere became even more submissive as it soaked in the water.
Kneeling on the floor, Su Yang treated it like a rare treasure, gently rubbing it with the pads of her fingers.
That cold, woody fragrance belonging to Wen Yusheng, mixed with the light scent of the detergent, rose up in the warm steam, enveloping her entire being.
Su Yang felt her face beginning to heat up again.
As she washed, her mind was a chaotic mess of thoughts.
Why was the Senior so good to her?
First the umbrella, then holding hands, and now giving her her own scarf.
This had completely crossed the boundaries of a normal relationship between a senior and a junior, hadn’t it?
Could it be… that the Senior also felt something a little bit special for her?
As soon as this thought surfaced, Su Yang quickly snuffed it out.
Impossible.
Su Yang shook her head vigorously.
The Senior was so outstanding and so beautiful; she certainly didn’t lack pursuers. How could she possibly take an interest in a plain physical education student like her, who had nothing going for her except a bit of physical strength?
Besides, she herself was straight.
How could she have these messy thoughts about another girl?
It must be an illusion.
The Senior was just too kind; seeing her get caught in the rain, she was simply taking extra care of her. Yes, that was it.
While brainwashing herself, Su Yang sped up her movements.
She finished washing the scarf, rinsed it three times until there wasn’t a single bubble left, and then carefully blotted the moisture with a dry towel. Finally, she found a clean hanger and hung it in a well-ventilated spot at the head of her bed.
After completing all this, she finally breathed a sigh of relief, feeling as though she had accomplished a sacred mission.
The next morning, Su Yang appeared on time downstairs at Wen Yusheng’s dormitory, sporting two faint dark circles under her eyes.
As usual, she carried a breakfast set in her hand, but her heart was much more apprehensive than usual.
She didn’t know how to face Wen Yusheng.
Should she act as if nothing happened, or should she proactively bring up what happened last night?
Before she could reach a conclusion, Wen Yusheng walked out of the building.
Today, Wen Yusheng wore a cream-colored knit sweater paired with a khaki long skirt. Her long hair draped softly over her shoulders, making her look gentle and intellectual.
Seeing Su Yang, a gentle smile—the same as always—appeared on her face.
“Morning.”
“M-morning, Senior.” Su Yang nervously handed over the breakfast.
Wen Yusheng took it naturally. Her gaze lingered on Su Yang’s face for a second before falling on the dark circles under her eyes.
“Didn’t sleep well last night?” she asked casually.
“Huh? N-no, I slept quite well,” Su Yang immediately denied, feeling guilty.
Wen Yusheng didn’t expose her; she just smiled and said, “Let’s go, time for class.”
Her attitude was so natural—so natural that Su Yang felt as if the person who had gripped her hand tightly in the rain and wrapped a scarf around her last night wasn’t her at all.
Su Yang felt a small sense of loss, but more than that, she felt a sense of relief.
It seemed the Senior really didn’t take last night’s events to heart.
That was for the best.
The two walked side-by-side toward the teaching building in silence.
As they neared the School of Economics and Management building, Wen Yusheng suddenly spoke up: “By the way, I have to rush an important thesis this week, so I’ll likely be spending most of my time in the library.”
Upon hearing this, Su Yang immediately had an idea.
“Senior!” she blurted out. “Then let me go with you!”
“You?” Wen Yusheng arched an eyebrow, looking at her.
“Yeah!” Fearing a rejection, Su Yang quickly found an excellent reason. “Seats in the library are so competitive, especially the good ones by the window. If you go late, you can’t get one at all! I run fast; I can go early to save a seat for you! I can also help you get water or buy food, it’ll be so convenient!”
She thumped her chest, looking like a reliable person saying, “Leave it to me.”
Looking at those bright eyes that practically shouted “Please say yes,” Wen Yusheng found it amusing.
This little puppy’s skill at making excuses was still so clumsy.
But she didn’t refuse.
“Alright then.” She nodded, her voice carrying a hint of a smile. “Then I’ll have to trouble you, my exclusive study companion.”
“It’s no trouble at all!” Su Yang’s eyes lit up instantly, and she smiled like a child who had just been given candy.
Exclusive study companion.
This title sounded even more intimate than “guardian.”
Su Yang felt like she was walking on air.
Thus, starting from that afternoon, an additional item was added to Su Yang’s “Protection Plan.”
Accompanying the Senior to study.
Every day, she was like she had been injected with adrenaline. As soon as class ended, she would sprint at a hundred-meter dash toward the library, using her backpack and water bottle to firmly secure the quietest window seat with the best lighting.
Then, she would sit there quietly, waiting for Wen Yusheng to arrive.
Wen Yusheng’s thesis seemed truly difficult.
Every day, she would arrive carrying a laptop and a pile of thick, all-English literature. As soon as she sat down, she immediately entered a working state.
Su Yang couldn’t understand those complex financial models or the dense data charts; she could only see Wen Yusheng’s brow furrowing and relaxing.
She saw how Wen Yusheng would habitually tap her finger lightly on the table while thinking.
She saw how Wen Yusheng would unconsciously bite her lower lip, those soft lips being nipped into a faint mark by her pearly teeth.
She saw how Wen Yusheng would occasionally get annoyed by falling strands of hair, then casually pull a hair tie from her bag and briskly tie her black hair into a ponytail, revealing her long, fair neck.
Su Yang rested her chin in her hands, watching blankly.
She felt like she could never see enough.
She had brought her own professional textbooks as well—a thick copy of Sports Biomechanics.
But she couldn’t read a word.
All of her attention was drawn to the quiet, focused figure beside her.
Wen Yusheng seemed to notice her gaze, but she said nothing.
She simply permitted Su Yang’s nearly rude staring.
Sometimes, she would look up from the complex data and catch Su Yang’s direct gaze, which Su Yang didn’t have time to retract.
Su Yang would act like a thief caught red-handed, immediately lowering her head with flushed cheeks, pretending to read her book intensely.
Whenever this happened, a very faint, doting smile would curl at the corner of Wen Yusheng’s mouth.
She found that she seemed to like this feeling more and more.
While dealing with cold, complex, and treacherous business data, there was such a warm, vivid presence beside her that belonged only to her.
It gave her an incomparable sense of peace.
It was as if no matter how exhausted she became from fighting in the business world, as long as she turned her head, she would see a pair of clear eyes quietly and intently guarding her.
This afternoon, Su Yang accompanied Wen Yusheng to the library again.
She had had a high-intensity badminton match in the morning, and her whole body felt like it was falling apart. Coupled with the fact that she had stayed up late the night before fussing over the scarf, sitting in the quiet, warm library caused her eyelids to start fighting an uncontrollable battle.
She tried hard to keep her eyes wide, wanting to continue watching the Senior.
But the words in Sports Biomechanics had turned into a pile of dancing ants in her eyes.
Her head nodded up and down like a roly-poly toy.
No, can’t sleep.
Su Yang desperately encouraged herself in her heart.
The Senior was still working hard; how could she fall asleep? She was the Senior’s exclusive study companion!
She secretly pinched her own thigh, and the pain cleared her head a bit.
She looked up and saw Wen Yusheng frowning at a K-line chart on her laptop screen, seemingly encountering a difficult problem.
Wen Yusheng’s expression was very serious, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she pulled up various data for comparison and analysis.
Su Yang didn’t understand it, but she could feel the powerful aura of a leader radiating from the Senior.
The Senior was so charming like this.
Su Yang rested her chin in her hands and started swooning again.
As she watched, her eyelids began to drop again.
This time, she really couldn’t hold on.
The insomnia from last night, combined with the intense exercise this morning, had completely exhausted her physical strength.
Her consciousness began to blur. The sounds of turning pages and tapping keys around her became increasingly distant.
In her world, only that familiar, reassuring woody fragrance remained.
It smells so good…
Su Yang’s head grew heavier and heavier.
She made one last struggle, intending to rest her head on the table to sleep.
But in the second before her consciousness sank completely into darkness, her body uncontrollably tilted in another direction.
That direction was warm and soft.
And it carried her favorite, cold fragrance.
Wen Yusheng was troubled by a set of abnormal data, feeling as though she had fallen into a mental dead end.
Just as she was about to close her laptop in frustration, her shoulder suddenly grew heavy.
A fuzzy head, carrying a warm breath, leaned gently against her shoulder.
