- Chapter 20.1 - Will You Still Get Married?
After Song Qingpei left, she felt a twinge of regret.
It wasn’t that she regretted confronting Ming Yu so bluntly, but she was worried that Ming Yu, accustomed to being in control, might feel so humiliated by the confrontation that she’d impulsively kick her out. After all, Song Qingpei had nothing to her name and truly had nowhere else to go.
But then again, if she kept tolerating everything, she might end up depressed before long.
Well, she’d deal with it as it came. She’d cross that bridge when she got to it.
She decided to make peace with herself first. After adjusting her emotions, she walked through the door with light steps.
In the living room, Song Song was sitting on the sofa, hugging her teddy bear and swinging her little legs. She seemed to be chatting with Steward Su, but her big eyes kept glancing toward the entrance.
As soon as she caught sight of a figure entering, she jumped off the sofa and rushed happily toward Song Qingpei, still clutching her teddy bear.
Song Qingpei playfully crouched down and opened her arms wide for a hug.
“Mommy, Mommy~”
Song Song’s soft, cooing voice melted Song Qingpei’s heart. She quickly bent over to pick her up, planting two loud kisses on her chubby cheeks. “Sweetie, were you good today?”
“Mhmm, Mommy, I was very good!” Song Song nodded vigorously.
The gloom in Song Qingpei’s heart instantly lifted, and she praised, “Song Song is amazing.”
Pouting, Song Song looked aggrieved. “But Mommy and Mama weren’t home, and no one played with me. It’s no fun being all by myself.”
Song Qingpei gently stroked her little head and coaxed her softly, “How about Mommy takes you out this weekend?”
“No,” Song Song refused instantly.
Surprised, Song Qingpei asked, “Why not?”
“Song Song doesn’t want to go out. Song Song wants to sleep with Mommy. It’s been so long since we slept together.”
With a milky, pleading voice, Song Song looked at Song Qingpei with hopeful eyes.
After hesitating for a few seconds, Song Qingpei finally agreed.
“Alright.”
Hearing her consent, Song Song immediately brightened up, nuzzling against Song Qingpei and chirping repeatedly, “Mommy is the best, Mommy is the best~”
Watching her daughter’s adorable antics, Song Qingpei felt her heart melt.
She patted her gently and smiled. “Alright, no more fuss. Mommy needs to take a bath and change first. You go wait in Mommy’s room.”
“Okay, okay!” Song Song clapped her hands excitedly.
Song Qingpei chuckled and ruffled her hair, then greeted Steward Su before carrying Song Song upstairs.
No sooner had the two gone upstairs than Ming Yu walked in.
Seeing how exhausted she looked, Steward Su immediately stepped forward and asked, “General, you’re back. Shall I have the kitchen prepare some supper?”
Ming Yu waved her hand dismissively and asked, “How is Song Song’s coursework progressing?”
Steward Su replied respectfully, “The tutor has been following the school curriculum closely. The young miss is learning very quickly. I believe she’ll have no trouble keeping up once the semester starts.”
Hearing this, Ming Yu seemed to recall something and instructed, “Bring me Song Song’s schedule.”
Steward Su promptly fetched the schedule and handed it to her. Ming Yu took it and hurried upstairs.
As she reached the turn on the second floor, she paused for a moment.
It’s just a discussion about Song Song’s education. Surely Song Qingpei won’t refuse, right?
Even as she tried to console herself with these thoughts, Ming Yu couldn’t help but tense up, turning toward Song Qingpei’s room.
As she approached the door, she heard faint giggles from inside.
She moved closer, about to knock, when she heard Song Song’s voice: “Mommy, are you still mad at Mama?”
Ming Yu instinctively slowed her steps, even her breathing grew quieter, her heart inexplicably tightening with anxiety.
She waited cautiously for Song Qingpei’s response.
Song Qingpei’s answer, muffled through the door, sounded emotionless: “Song Song, Mommy isn’t mad at her.”
Ming Yu frowned this was clearly a tone meant to placate a child.
But Song Song’s reaction showed that even a child wasn’t fooled: “Mommy, you’re lying! You are mad you won’t even talk to Mama.”
“Has Mama not apologized to you yet?”
“Mommy, will you ever like Mama?”
The little one fired off questions like arrows from a crossbow, voicing the very doubts swirling in Ming Yu’s heart.
Thinking about apologizing, she still felt a bit too proud to lower her head.
But if an apology could restore Song Qingpei’s previous attitude toward her, she might just be willing to swallow her pride.
However, Song Qingpei’s response shattered all her illusions: “Song Song, Mommy doesn’t like your Mama. In the future, Mommy and your Mama might have other partners, but that won’t change how much we both love you.”
The reply was met with Song Song’s sudden, loud wailing!
Ming Yu could hardly bear to listen any longer, her hand clenching the class schedule tightly.
Song Qingpei’s words were a clear attempt to draw a line between them, even openly conveying this idea to their daughter. Remembering the unfamiliar Omega pheromones from that night, her anger flared was she really in such a hurry?
Suppressing the raging fire in her chest, Ming Yu turned away with a darkened expression.
Unaware that Ming Yu had ever been there, Song Qingpei was now flustered, trying to comfort the sobbing child.
The moment Song Song heard she might have a stepmother, she broke down completely, clinging to Song Qingpei and crying uncontrollably: “Waa~ Song Song will be good, Mommy, please don’t get Song Song a stepmother, okay?”
Song Qingpei froze, her heart aching.
Lately, with the conflict between her and Ming Yu, Song Song’s well-being had been weighing heavily on her mind.
Since Ming Yu had already gone on a blind date, marriage was likely just a matter of time. If their daughter stayed with her, she would have to accept this reality. The thought alone made her heart twist with pain.
But seeing her daughter cry like this filled her with guilt had she been too hasty?
She held Song Song close, kissing her again and again: “Song Song, please stop crying, okay? Mommy was wrong. Mommy would never abandon Song Song.”
The little one sobbed, refusing to be comforted: “Mommy’s lying, wuuu, don’t leave Song Song.”
Her pitiful expression twisted Song Qingpei’s heart with remorse and tenderness.
Her chest aching, she pulled Song Song into her arms and whispered gently, “Song Song, don’t cry. Mommy will never leave you.”
“Wuuu…”
“Mommy promises, she will never, ever leave Song Song.”
At that moment, Song Qingpei reaffirmed her resolve to fight Ming Yu for custody of Song Song. No matter how wide the gap between them, she would strive with all her might to close it.
At the very least, she now had hope, she was no longer the powerless, spiritless waste she once was.
Song Qingpei’s reassurance finally calmed Song Song a little. She patiently explained to the child for a long time until the little one understood it wasn’t her mother who wanted to find her a stepmother, but her mommy.
The child was indeed less sad, but even angrier: “Bad Mommy! She made Mom angry and wants to find Song Song a stepmother. Can we just not want her anymore?”
“Uh…” Song Qingpei was speechless.
She would have loved nothing more, but if Ming Yu found out, she definitely wouldn’t let it go.
Thinking about this unsolvable problem gave Song Qingpei another headache, so she could only soothe Song Song to sleep first.
The little one soon fell asleep in her arms.
Looking at the child’s sweet, peaceful sleeping face, Song Qingpei sighed softly.
“Song Song, Mom will never give up on you.”
She gently kissed the child’s forehead, her heart growing heavy.
She didn’t dare imagine where she and Ming Yu were headed.
But she had no choice but to face it.
If she didn’t work hard, fight, and strive, she would never be qualified to speak with Ming Yu as an equal.
The next day, Song Qingpei got up and woke Song Song.
The little one grumbled as she opened her eyes. Because she had cried so much the night before, her eyes were slightly red and swollen, making anyone who saw her heart ache. Song Qingpei couldn’t bear it and had to indulge her clinginess.
She dressed the child, allowing her to cling like a koala the entire time, and carried her downstairs.
During breakfast, she coaxed and fed her bite by bite, making Steward Su frown disapprovingly from the side, though he didn’t say anything.
It wasn’t until Ming Yu came downstairs and her gaze fell on the two of them.
Both mother and daughter tacitly ignored her.
Song Qingpei pretended not to see her, while Song Song let out a loud “hmph!” in her direction.
Seeing this, Ming Yu frowned slightly and walked over to sit opposite them.
She intended to speak to Song Qingpei, but remembering what she had overheard the night before, she felt she shouldn’t give in so easily.
So she turned her attention to Song Song and said, “Song Song, sit properly and eat by yourself.”
Song Song immediately turned her face away, completely ignoring her.
Ming Yu raised her voice slightly, “Song Song!”
This time, Song Song finally reacted. She turned her head and glared at Ming Yu, saying angrily, “I hate you!”
Ming Yu: “…”
What’s wrong with this child today?
Song Qingpei coughed lightly beside them and explained, “Song Song isn’t in a good mood today. Don’t be too harsh on her.”
Ming Yu glanced at Song Qingpei but said nothing.
Instead, she looked back at Song Song and said sternly, “There are rules for eating. What did your etiquette teacher teach you? Have you forgotten so quickly?”
At her words, the child’s eyes welled up with tears, looking utterly wronged. “Bad Mommy! I don’t want to talk to you anymore!”
In a fit of pique, Song Song turned and ran upstairs.
Song Qingpei quickly stood up to follow her but was stopped by Ming Yu.
“You can’t spoil her like this.”
But Song Qingpei didn’t listen to her. Instead, she ignored Ming Yu’s words and hurried after the child.
By the time she had comforted Song Song and came back downstairs, Ming Yu had already left.
Fuming, Song Qingpei grew even more convinced that Ming Yu was the problem. Song Song was only three and a half years old wasn’t Ming Yu being too strict with her?
Thinking about the life Song Song would have to face from now on, she felt even more certain that her decision was right.
No matter what, she would never give up custody of her daughter.
In the following days, mother and daughter tacitly ignored Ming Yu, not only avoiding conversation but even refusing to look her in the eye. She had never felt so defeated, the sting of being cold-shouldered and rejected was unbearable.
It felt like a bucket of icy water had been dumped over her head, extinguishing all her arrogance.
Especially her daughter, who had grown much closer to her recently, suddenly turned a cold shoulder.
Ming Yu was convinced that Song Qingpei was behind it all!
But Song Qingpei’s sudden coldness and strange behavior left Ming Yu completely baffled about her true intentions.
Could she really be planning to give up on Song Song and leave?
How was that possible!
Ming Yu still refused to believe that Song Qingpei would willingly abandon everything. After all, she had no one to rely on in Lanxing without Ming Yu, she wouldn’t even be able to survive. How could she dare?
Did she think finding a job would be enough to turn her life around?
Ming Yu couldn’t help but inwardly scoff at her naivety. A faint impulse stirred within her: if she made Song Qingpei lose her job, wouldn’t that solve all the problems and force her to behave?
So, upon returning from the military headquarters, Ming Yu decided to seek out Song Song first and ask her.
But the moment she found the little one, Song Song angrily turned her head away, clearly still upset.
