- Chapter 17 - I Can Leave as Soon as Possible!
Faced with this sudden interrogation, Song Qingpei initially thought Ming Yu had discovered she had been job hunting.
Just as she was about to argue her case, a sharp pain shot through her shoulder where Ming Yu had grabbed her, forcing a stifled groan from her lips. Ming Yu snapped back to reality, realizing she had lost her composure, and quickly released her grip.
Song Qingpei glared up at her, irritation evident. “What are you doing?”
“Are you okay?” Ming Yu’s concerned words cut off abruptly.
Especially when met with Song Qingpei’s cold expression, and recalling the unfamiliar Omega pheromones she had detected earlier, the simmering rage that had been brewing suddenly turned sour, making her feel deeply unsettled. She couldn’t help but press again:
“Song Qingpei, I’m asking you, what were you doing tonight?”
Originally, Song Qingpei had intended to explain calmly, but now her good mood was completely ruined, her shoulder throbbed painfully, and her patience had worn thin.
“What I do is none of your business!”
Song Qingpei let out a cold laugh, no longer holding back. “General Ming, I agreed to come back with you to take care of Song Song, I didn’t sell myself to you. You’re overstepping.”
Hearing her reply, Ming Yu’s expression darkened further, a wave of inexplicable anger surging within her.
She wasn’t one to wear her emotions on her sleeve, yet whenever she faced Song Qingpei, she felt an uncontrollable sense of powerlessness, as if things were slowly slipping from her grasp.
It was a terrible feeling!
Ming Yu took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down.
She stared at Song Qingpei and spoke coldly, “Song Qingpei, don’t forget your current position. I’m warning you, don’t try to provoke me. I can make you leave this place at any time!”
Nothing angered Song Qingpei more than this kind of threat!
If it weren’t for Song Song, she would have left this wretched place long ago.
She had once considered yielding in exchange for peaceful coexistence with Ming Yu, but reality had proven that path unworkable.
That slap from that night wasn’t just an insult it had woken her up. Constantly giving in would never earn her equal treatment; others would only take advantage. Respect had to be fought for.
Now, hearing Ming Yu threaten her again, Song Qingpei felt less panic and more resolve. It was bound to come to this sooner or later.
“Fine, I can leave as soon as possible!”
Song Qingpei met Ming Yu’s gaze calmly. “But before that, I hope we can have a proper discussion about Song Song’s custody. She can stay with you for now, but I want visitation rights two to three times a week. Of course, I’ll cooperate with you to prepare Song Song so she won’t resist too much…”
Ming Yu clearly hadn’t expected such a rational negotiation. Anxiously, she cut Song Qingpei off, “You don’t have to leave, as long as you.”
She stopped mid-sentence. In her panic, she had instinctively interrupted without thinking through what to say next.
“As long as I what?” Song Qingpei sneered, a mocking glint in her eyes. “As long as I obey you like a dog?”
Ming Yu was taken aback by Song Qingpei’s words, rendered speechless, unsure how to respond.
Watching Ming Yu stand there dumbfounded, Song Qingpei felt she had exposed her despicable intentions, only deepening her disappointment.
She lifted her head, meeting Ming Yu’s gaze without backing down, and declared word by word, “Ming Yu, I am a person with my own dignity. I will never let you manipulate me like a dog. Threatening me with Song Song won’t work, I will never compromise.”
Since compromise was useless and they had already torn off all pretenses, she might as well fight. She had survived years of wandering, what was there to fear?
With her resolve firm, Song Qingpei didn’t spare Ming Yu another glance and turned to head upstairs.
“Song Qingpei…”
Hearing the call from behind, Song Qingpei paused but didn’t turn back, continuing forward instead.
Behind her, Ming Yu watched that stubborn, straight-backed figure, and an inexplicable pang shot through her heart, a sudden sense of panic washing over her.
Instinctively, she rushed forward and grabbed Song Qingpei’s arm. Learning from last time, she used less force, but it was still enough to prevent Song Qingpei from breaking free. Yet Song Qingpei didn’t resist this time; she simply stood there, her gaze complex as she looked at Ming Yu.
Ming Yu stared at Song Qingpei, a tumult of emotions swirling inside her.
Seeing her standing there like a block of wood, saying nothing, Song Qingpei asked impatiently, “What do you want in the middle of the night?”
Ming Yu looked at her, her tone strained, “That’s not what I meant.”
Her words seemed abrupt, but Song Qingpei understood Ming Yu was explaining that she hadn’t intended to treat her like a dog to be tamed.
How ridiculous. Hadn’t the blatant threat just now been a clear warning using Song Song?
Song Qingpei sneered inwardly but spoke expressionlessly, “General Ming, weren’t you just threatening me?”
Ming Yu suddenly regretted her impulsive words. Though she had indeed meant to threaten, she hadn’t expected Song Qingpei to react so fiercely this wasn’t the outcome she wanted.
Thinking this, Ming Yu unconsciously lowered her head, coughing lightly to mask her embarrassment. “I was too impulsive with my words earlier.”
Song Qingpei shot her a cold glance. “So?”
Pressing her lips together stiffly, Ming Yu said, “I can apologize, but you have to tell me where you went today and why…” there was the scent of an Omega on you?
But before she could finish, Song Qingpei cut her off, “I don’t need your apology, and I don’t want to discuss this with you.”
Ming Yu: “…”
Seeing her remain silent, Song Qingpei said coldly, “If there’s nothing else, I’m going back to rest. We can talk about Song Song once you’ve calmed down.”
With that, she shook off Ming Yu’s grip and walked toward the bedroom without looking back.
This time, Ming Yu didn’t stop her.
Watching Song Qingpei’s retreating figure, Ming Yu felt her heart sink into icy water, chilled to the core.
That night, both were lost in their own thoughts.
Song Qingpei worried about how to wrest Song Song from Ming Yu’s grasp. She was utterly fed up with Ming Yu’s unpredictable temperament, all the good mood from earlier had been ruined.
She had been hesitating about whether to take the job at Blue Sea. After all, nothing good came for free, and the other party’s enthusiastic insistence felt suspicious. But the thought of continuing to live under the same roof with Ming Yu made her feel she would go mad. Since she had nothing left to lose, she might as well give it a try.
Moreover, the person in charge, Murong Ruixue, seemed like a decent Omega. Even during her sensitive heat period, she insisted on demonstrating the repair process of the combat mecha, nearly causing her own pheromones to spiral out of control. It wasn’t until she went to the hospital that she managed to stabilize. To say Song Qingpei wasn’t moved would be a lie.
Thinking of this, Song Qingpei decided she would tell Murong Ruixue the next day that she had agreed to take the job.
On the other side.
General Ming Yu, nearly driven mad with anger, tossed and turned restlessly in bed.
The scene from earlier kept replaying in her mind Song Qingpei’s gaze had startled her. That unfamiliar and distant look made it seem as though Ming Yu were someone utterly detestable.
Especially the unfamiliar scent of an Omega’s pheromones on Song Qingpei, it left Ming Yu deeply unsettled.
She couldn’t help but wonder: before, Song Qingpei would always compromise without hesitation for Song Song, so why had she suddenly become so unyielding?
Could it be that she was still thinking of secretly leaving with Song Song?
Or had she found another Omega and was planning to heartlessly abandon Song Song, then have a child with someone else?
Just the thought of this possibility ignited a nameless fury within her, burning hotter and hotter until she could hardly breathe.
Ming Yu abruptly sat up, grabbed her phone, and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, pulling back the curtains.
Outside, the moon hung high, tree shadows danced, and stars twinkled.
As she gazed at the night sky, she didn’t know what she was worried about or perhaps what she was afraid of. Yet, a faint voice in her heart kept reminding her: she couldn’t let Song Qingpei have a child with another Omega.
Why?
Because… Song Song deserved to have undivided love.
Having found what, she deemed a reasonable explanation, Ming Yu gritted her teeth and made a call, her mind already made up.
The person who answered sounded drowsy and extremely impatient: “Damn, who is this? Calling in the middle of the night. C-cousin? What’s going on at this hour?”
Ming Yu said, “Ming Rui, I need you to investigate someone’s whereabouts for me.”
After sending Song Qingpei’s information over, she added, “I want every detail of her daily movements investigated and reported to me!”
Seeing Song Qingpei’s photo, Ming Rui who had heard some of the gossip instantly perked up. An opportunity to get close to the drama? Perfect.
“No problem, cousin! Leave it to me!”
“Mm.”
Without another word, Ming Yu hung up.
She lay back in bed, seething, but sleep remained elusive. She stayed awake, eyes open, until dawn.
