The Cool CEO’s Ultra-Sweet Boyfriend - Chapter 4
Chapter 4: I’ll Wait for You
Xu Nanxin was so excited that he barely slept all night. Yet, when he went to work the next day, his face was still beaming with joy, and he was bursting with energy for his job.
Even though his proposal was rejected and sent back by Ji Li several times in a row, Xu Nanxin didn’t get annoyed. Instead, he patiently revised it over and over again.
A colleague next to him even thought he had been driven over the edge by Ji Li’s provocations and couldn’t help but worry for him.
But Xu Nanxin just smiled, shook his head, and said, “It’s fine, it’s fine!”
Just the thought of meeting Mr. Z soon made him incredibly happy, so he didn’t care about Ji Li’s constant nitpicking on his proposal.
On the day of their scheduled meeting, he made sure to prepare meticulously.
The night before, he had deliberately gotten a haircut and put on a face mask. In the morning, he carefully styled his hair and changed into a brand-new outfit he had prepared.
He was already quite good-looking, and with a little grooming, he looked completely refreshed and striking.
Even the female coworkers in the office couldn’t help but steal a few extra glances at him.
“How come you’re dressed so special today?” Yang Xuan couldn’t resist teasing him when she ran into him.
“Really?” Xu Nanxin clearly cared a lot, so he couldn’t help asking, “Does it look too forced?”
Yang Xuan shook her head. “Not forced at all, but I can tell you put effort into it. Several young girls are staring at you!”
Saying that, she leaned closer to Xu Nanxin and whispered jokingly, “Hey kiddo, you aren’t going on a date after work, are you?”
Having his secret guessed by Yang Xuan, Xu Nanxin smiled mischievously, winked, and made a “shh” gesture.
“No wonder you’ve been so happy these past few days. Even when Mr. Ji rejected your proposal five or six times, you didn’t get angry. Turns out you’re lucky in love! But don’t forget to submit your proposal. Did you see the group notification? We’re working overtime this weekend tomorrow,” Yang Xuan reminded him.
She was afraid that Xu Nanxin was so lovesick that he might miss the announcement, which would be disastrous!
“I saw it. I’m going to turn in the proposal right now,” Xu Nanxin said with a smile.
The proposal was already fixed. As for working overtime tomorrow, it didn’t really matter as long as it didn’t affect him leaving on time today.
Xu Nanxin spent the entire day at the office checking the time repeatedly, waiting to log off. His heart was leaping with anticipation. He finally managed to endure until nearly five o’clock—only a little over an hour left before he could leave!
Suddenly, his computer pinged with a notification. Xu Nanxin clicked it open; his proposal had been rejected yet again. There were only a few cold words written on it: Revise it again and send it to me tomorrow morning.
For a rare moment, the expression on Xu Nanxin’s face froze. He had submitted his proposal early in the morning, but Ji Li had waited until now to send it back, and even demanded it first thing tomorrow morning. It was almost time to clock out!
If this were any other day, Xu Nanxin wouldn’t have complained. At worst, he would just stay late to revise it—it wasn’t like he hadn’t done that recently. But tonight, he had plans.
Mr. Z had asked to meet him, and he didn’t want to break his promise. Moreover, he deeply wanted to see Mr. Z. After anticipating this for so long, Ji Li had ruthlessly poured a bucket of freezing water all over him right when he was about to meet Mr. Z, chilling him to the bone.
Xu Nanxin stood up, pushed back his office chair, and walked toward Ji Li’s office.
A knock sounded at the door.
“Come in.”
Ji Li was buried under a pile of work and documents. Jiangning Branch itself had far too many existing issues. Whether it was internal management or external business, he had actually been busier than anyone else during this period.
When Xu Nanxin pushed the door open and walked in, he saw Ji Li so occupied that he didn’t even have time to look up and give him a glance. Xu Nanxin felt inexplicably nervous. But at the thought of his purpose for coming in, he forced himself to muster up his courage.
“Mr. Ji,” Xu Nanxin took a deep breath, trying his best to make his voice sound calm and confident—at least, he couldn’t show cold feet.
Hearing the voice, Ji Li frowned. His slightly knitted brows even carried a trace of impatience, creating quite an oppressive aura. He asked indifferently, “Why is it you?”
He had thought it was his secretary.
“Mr. Ji, I saw the email you sent. I’d like to ask, what exactly is the issue with this proposal?” Xu Nanxin asked.
Ji Li knew that yet another dissatisfied employee had run in to confront him. He ignored the question, his focus entirely on the work in his hands.
“I’m busy. I don’t have time to pinpoint errors for you.”
Xu Nanxin: “…”
“Fine.” Xu Nanxin nodded. “Then let me ask a different question. Mr. Ji, what kind of effect are you looking for? Can I revise it according to your vision?”
Hearing this, Ji Li finally lifted his eyes. However, his gaze was full of sheer confusion, as if he genuinely couldn’t understand how Xu Nanxin could ask such a question.
“If you’re going to ask me everything, I might as well just write the proposal myself. What do I need you guys for?”
Screw your grandfather!
Xu Nanxin wanted to snap back directly, but thinking about his Huabei digital credit bills, he lost his nerve again. He needed this job. Setting everything else aside, it was a large company with a high salary. He had gone through hell to stand out among a crowd of applicants. At these thoughts, his rationality returned.
“Mr. Ji, I have something personal to attend to tonight. Can I revise the proposal tomorrow instead? I promise to turn it in tomorrow afternoon.” Xu Nanxin fully embodied the humbleness of a corporate drone. Even after being snapped at like this by Ji Li, he still had to speak in a pleasant and polite tone.
“You should talk to your planning department supervisor about that. I need to see the proposal tomorrow morning. If you have a personal matter, go coordinate with your own department members,” Ji Li said flatly.
When he finished speaking, Xu Nanxin didn’t leave immediately. He looked hesitant, as if he still wanted to say something. Ji Li had no time to deal with him, so before the other could speak again, he asked directly, “Is there anything else?”
Xu Nanxin was just about to explain that he really had an emergency tonight when he heard Ji Li continue, “If there’s nothing else, please close the door on your way out.”
Xu Nanxin: “…”
He knew that talking to Ji Li was useless, and approaching his supervisor would be even more inappropriate. Ji Li demanded it tomorrow morning, and since this was Xu Nanxin’s own assignment, he couldn’t exactly ask someone else to stay late and fix it for him.
After leaving the office, he was completely absent-minded. He opened his computer to revise the proposal, but after staring at it for a long time, he had no idea where to start.
As the clock ticked closer to closing time, the more anxious Xu Nanxin got, the messier his revisions became. In the end, he wasted over an hour for nothing.
His eyes flushed red with anger, feeling as though he had suffered a massive injustice. He even felt like smashing his keyboard right then and there!
You idiot surnamed Ji, I hope you stay single for the rest of your life!
Aside from a few people staying behind, most of the employees had left one after another. Xu Nanxin realized that he couldn’t go on like this. Not only would he fail to see Mr. Z, but the proposal wouldn’t get finished either.
So, he pulled out his phone, opened a certain app, found Mr. Z, and sent a paragraph of text over.
White Rabbit Cream Candy: Mr. Z, there’s been a tiny mishap. I might need to work overtime for a bit. Can we change our meeting time to nine o’clock?
After a moment, Mr. Z replied: Okay, don’t rush. I’ll wait for you.
Seeing the message, Xu Nanxin’s eyes welled up with tears. Mr. Z was still the best, always able to give him comfort whenever he was upset.
White Rabbit Cream Candy: You are so nice, Mr. Z. I love you!
Mr. Z: Why the sudden confession? Did you face some unfair treatment at work?
White Rabbit Cream Candy: It’s nothing. I’ll get back to work now, see you then.
Mr. Z: Okay.
After chatting with Mr. Z, Xu Nanxin felt much better. He put his phone aside, set it to silent, and after a thought, specifically set an alarm for 8:30 PM before restarting his work on the proposal.
Most of the people in the office had left by now. In the entire planning department, only two or three people were working overtime, so it was exceptionally quiet.
Xu Nanxin could only hear the sound of keyboards tapping around him. He fixed his gaze intently on the computer screen, thinking that the sooner he finished revising, the sooner he could go see Mr. Z.
