Chapter 3: “Little Rabbit, Have You Ever Thought About Meeting Up?”
The night in B City was exceptionally quiet. Inside a small, single-apartment, the computer screen was still glowing, but the person in front of it had already slumped over, fast asleep.
Suddenly, the phone nearby vibrated and lit up. Wakened by the disturbance, Xu Nanxin subconsciously glanced at the phone, picked it up, and unlocked it. An app he rarely saw active had popped up—it was a voice call from Mr. Z.
Xu Nanxin snapped out of his sleepiness, his eyes lighting up with visible joy. He answered the call. The app came with a built-in voice changer.
“Hello, Mr. Z,” Xu Nanxin said, the corners of his mouth curving upward. His lazy, sleepy tone naturally carried a hint of affectionate whining, making his voice sound sweet and endearing.
“Hey, did you just wake up? I noticed you hadn’t replied to my messages for a long time, so I decided to call. Did I wake you?”
The voice on the other end was as steady and reassuring as ever, carrying the man’s unique, gentle warmth that comforted like a silent spring rain. Xu Nanxin often wondered what Mr. Z’s real voice sounded like.
He felt it would definitely sound even better than this. However, he preferred to save all the mystery for the moment they finally met.
“I didn’t reply to your messages? I remember…” Xu Nanxin subconsciously checked his phone. In the chat interface, the text he had typed when he got off work was still sitting in the input box as a draft. He had actually forgotten to hit send.
“I’m so sorry for making you worry. I thought I had replied to you,” Xu Nanxin said apologetically. “I’m still working on the project proposal, and I accidentally fell asleep just now. Luckily, your call woke me up.”
“Why are you so busy? I remember you mentioned during the National Day holiday that you were working on a proposal at home. It’s been a few days since the holiday ended, and you’re still not finished?”
Mr. Z’s voice turned slightly deeper, carrying an involuntary air of authority. Xu Nanxin remembered that in real life, Mr. Z seemed to be a manager at a small company.
“Don’t even get me started, I’m just about to redo it. You have no idea—our boss is simply not human. Right now, he feels like everything we do is unsatisfactory. He doesn’t treat his employees like human beings at all. If it were you, you definitely wouldn’t treat your subordinates like this, right?”
Xu Nanxin rarely complained about work to Mr. Z. This time, he hadn’t thought much of it, but since Mr. Z asked, he couldn’t help but vent a little.
Perhaps people always crave comfort from those closest to them.
Mr. Z didn’t speak. The silence lasted a bit too long, and Xu Nanxin began to worry that Mr. Z would think of him as someone who did nothing but complain at work. Just as he was about to say something to break the awkwardness, Mr. Z’s voice came through.
“Little Rabbit, have you ever thought about meeting up?”
The question came so abruptly that it caught Xu Nanxin off guard for a moment. “Huh?”
“I’m in B City right now,” Mr. Z said. “In fact, I’ve been here for over a month. I didn’t tell you before because, first, work was quite busy, and second, I wanted to give you a surprise.”
Xu Nanxin’s heart began to race inexplicably. Mr. Z is in B City, and he’s asking to meet up!
The two had met online. Strictly speaking, Xu Nanxin was the one who pursued Mr. Z first. They had known each other for three years and had been dating for a year, but they had never met in person.
For one thing, neither of them had ever brought it up. For another, Mr. Z always seemed very busy with work, and Xu Nanxin was still in university with a heavy workload. But mainly… Xu Nanxin had a bit of a psychological shadow from the past, so he never disclosed any real personal information online, not even a single photo.
Mr. Z was attentive and considerate; he never pried. Since Xu Nanxin’s profile picture was a rabbit and his username was “Big White Rabbit Milk Candy,” Mr. Z had always called him by that nickname.
As for Xu Nanxin, because the other man’s username was just a single letter “Z,” he had thought about it for a long time before deciding to call him “Mr. Z.” He hadn’t expected that over time, it would become their unique pet name for each other.
And now, Mr. Z was actually initiating a meeting!
Xu Nanxin felt like he would definitely be too excited to sleep tonight.
“What’s wrong? You don’t want to?”
Probably because Xu Nanxin hadn’t responded for a while, Mr. Z asked again.
“No, no,” Xu Nanxin immediately denied. He was just too excited that he forgot to answer.
“Then shall we make it next Friday at 7:00 PM? Is that okay?” Mr. Z asked.
“Yes, that works,” Xu Nanxin agreed without hesitation.
“Great. I’ll see you then.”
Even after the call ended, Xu Nanxin’s heart couldn’t calm down. It felt almost surreal—Mr. Z actually asked to meet!
He dove straight onto his bed, rolling over a couple of times. Then, staring at the ceiling, he couldn’t help but sketch Mr. Z’s appearance in his mind. Originally, he had planned to initiate the meeting himself once his internship ended and his job stabilized, but he hadn’t expected the other man to beat him to it.
Moreover, the man was in B City right now! Just the thought of them being in the exact same city at this very moment made him too excited to fall back asleep!
