The Cold Side Character from a Male-Lead Novel is Pregnant - Chapter 30
Never again will I want to break up with Chen Kan out of guilt.
Lately, the life of the good boy Taro Ball had indeed been a bit gloomy.
As a cute male dog who loved his mommy, he was usually very clingy toward Yan Yu. However, ever since Yan Yu brought him back to their original home, his contact time with Yan Yu had plummeted, and even the location of his crate kept changing.
His crate had moved from the corner of the living room to the balcony, and then, due to a series of maneuvers by Tony, from the balcony into the master bedroom.
The time he spent seeing Yan Yu each day had decreased significantly. It used to be Yan Yu who walked him morning and night; later it became Chen Kan, and eventually, it became several professional dog walkers hired specifically for the task.
This afternoon, the electronic code lock chimed.
A girl Taro Ball had never seen before stood at the door, holding a leash and a bag of treats.
“Taro Ball, let us go out to play.”
The girl crouched down and shook a biscuit in her hand. Taro Ball sniffed it. It was his favorite beef flavor, so he wagged his tail and approached her. The girl clipped on his leash and took him downstairs, feeding him biscuits along the way and taking photos of him with her phone.
Taro Ball was a dog who loved attention and naturally liked fragrant young ladies. He grinned brightly at the camera, tongue lolling to one side, making all sorts of silly, smiling expressions.
This continued until he was taken into an unfamiliar building and lifted onto a table. The table was cold, and a person in white touched his belly. Taro Ball squirmed a bit but did not resist. He saw the girl still holding her phone and smiling at him, so he grinned at the lens once more.
Yan Yu was in a meeting.
His phone vibrated with an email notification. During a break in the meeting, he opened his inbox.
The first email had a blank subject line. The attachment was a photo of Taro Ball grinning foolishly with a street in the background. Yan Yu frowned. He thought perhaps Chen Kan had given his email address to the dog walker, who had snapped some cute photos of Taro Ball and sent them over. He continued listening to the report.
Five minutes later, a second email arrived. The subject was still blank. However, this time, the photo showed Taro Ball lying on a surgical table. His eyes looked a bit dazed, and there was a gloved hand beside him.
This time, Yan Yu recognized it: the neutering table at a pet hospital.
Did Chen Kan arrange for Taro Ball to be neutered today?
Well, if Yan Yu was still supposedly in his delusional state, Chen Kan really had no need to consult him. Yan Yu closed the email window and continued taking notes for the meeting until a third email arrived.
In this photo, Taro Ball’s eyes were wide and round, his ears pinned back in a terrified expression that screamed, “This is terrifying for a dog!”
Yan Yu raised an eyebrow. Sending so many? Is he using email to record the important moments of Taro Ball’s life? Why not send them to Chen Kan’s email instead?
Yan Yu did not think much of it. He marked the emails as read and turned off his notifications. Consequently, he did not see the fourth email that arrived ten minutes later.

Attachment 2: (Video.MP3 – On the surgical table, Taro Ball feels a patch of fur being shaved from his belly. It feels chilly. He tilts his head to look, seeing the person in white holding something shiny. He looks back at the girl with the phone. The girl gives him a thumbs up. Taro Ball, the lover of beautiful women, blinks, opens his mouth, and gives another silly smile. Just then, the screen abruptly goes black, and the footage ends with a chilling, horror-movie vibe.)
During lunch, Chen Kan’s phone repeatedly played this “chilling” video. He sat with a furrowed brow, constantly speculating on how Yan Yu would react to these emails.
However, by the time Chen Kan had watched the video over and over and finished his meal, it was 1:20 PM, and Yan Yu still had not contacted him. After asking around, Chen Kan learned that Yan Yu should be on his lunch break.
Chen Kan stood up. He reached the door but turned back to grab two cartons of the yogurt Yan Yu frequently drank from the refrigerator. He sent Yan Yu a message: “I am downstairs. We need to talk.”
There was no reply.
Chen Kan waited downstairs for five minutes, but his phone screen remained dark. He looked up at the east side of the fourth floor of the Criminal Investigation Detachment building, the window of the Forensic Center Director’s office. The curtains were half-drawn, making it impossible to see inside.
Condensation from the yogurt cartons had already dampened his fingertips. Chen Kan frowned and decided not to wait any longer, heading straight into the building. He avoided the elevator and walked quickly up the stairs.
The fourth-floor corridor was quiet. The door to the Director’s office at the end was slightly ajar. Chen Kan knocked twice and pushed the door open without waiting for a response.
Yan Yu was indeed there, alone. When working, Yan Yu always wore silver-rimmed glasses, sterile gloves, and a white lab coat, looking exceptionally cold and detached.
When Chen Kan opened the door, Yan Yu was leaning over an anatomical model next to his desk, using tweezers to manipulate some simulated tissue. A tablet nearby displayed complex cross-sectional diagrams. He did not look up, saying only, “Sit down first. Give me two minutes.”
Chen Kan did not sit. He walked to the desk, placed the two cartons of yogurt down, and stood there staring fixedly at Yan Yu.
Clearly, Yan Yu’s attention was entirely on the model. His fingertips were steady, his gaze sharp, and the thin glasses on the bridge of his nose reflected the cold white light. This was Director Yan the forensic doctor, 100% detached from personal emotion. This was the Yan Yu who would not let his work be affected, even by a mental demon.
In Chen Kan’s memory, Yan Yu always seemed that excellent, restrained, and perfect. Aside from not loving him quite enough, he seemed to have no flaws.
If Yan Yu were to recover from his delusional state this time and find the recent events embarrassing, Chen Kan actually would not mind taking the initiative to pretend he had amnesia. But when would his Yan Yu finally wake up completely?
About a minute and a half later, Yan Yu briskly pulled off his gloves, tossed them into a specialized bin, and walked to the sink to wash his hands thoroughly. His gaze swept over the yogurt on the desk before finally landing on Chen Kan’s face. He seemed to deliberate for a long time before finally forcing a low-emotion sentence from his throat.
“Does the Prince have urgent business?”
Just five words. His voice was like the temperature of his fingertips: without fluctuation. However, perhaps because he added the title “Prince,” the tips of Yan Yu’s ears turned slightly red.
Chen Kan did not seem to notice anything unusual, asking with a straight face, “Did you check your email?”
Yan Yu remembered the three emails from that morning. “I did.”
“So… what do you think?”
Yan Yu took a moment to react. He realized that if the “Prince of Mohe,” as the “eldest son” of the new Emperor, were kidnapped and castrated, it would be a major event that severed the foundation of the national lineage. If he had not yet recovered from his delusional state, he certainly should not be this calm.
But it was so stupid. What on earth was Chen Kan trying to do?
Seeing that Chen Kan’s face had turned a shade redder than when he first entered, though his expression remained unchanged, Chen Kan lied to him. “Rest assured, I will not trade you for him.”
Yan Yu blinked. “Trade for what?”
Chen Kan said, “Trade for the dog’s balls.”
The clever Yan Yu blinked sensitively, understanding Chen Kan’s maneuver almost instantly. He quietly swiped open his phone to check his inbox and saw a new email.

Yan Yu’s habit of feeling second-hand embarrassment flared up again, but… how could Chen Kan be this funny? Yan Yu began to wonder if Chen Kan would go to any lengths to snap him out of his delusional state.
Still, it was quite cute.
Yan Yu suddenly remembered how they were when they first started dating. Chen Kan was a college student then, and he did not seem to have changed much. His heart and eyes were still full of nothing but Yan Yu.
Yan Yu did not know what he was thinking. Perhaps he was not thinking at all. Instinctively, he tilted his head up, reached out, grabbed Chen Kan’s collar, and pulled him down with force!
Then, his lips gently pressed against Chen Kan’s, leaving a very pure kiss on the corner of his mouth.
Chen Kan stood still, looking down at Yan Yu. His muscles tensed instantly, but he did not speak. Yan Yu’s kiss broke as quickly as it had begun. In a very soft voice, he said, “Idiot.”
Chen Kan’s entire body tightened and then slowly relaxed. He looked down at Yan Yu, his eyes darkening slightly. “Are you back to normal?”
“Yes.” Yan Yu took a quiet step back. “We will talk tonight. I have to work now.”
“Fine.” Chen Kan turned to face Yan Yu fully. He did not move closer but simply looked at Yan Yu’s face with great focus. After a few seconds, he suddenly leaned forward and lowered his head, resting his forehead gently against Yan Yu’s.
The movement was sudden but restrained. It lasted only as long as two or three heartbeats. Then he straightened up and used his knuckles to lightly brush Yan Yu’s earlobe.
“I will leave work early today to pick up Taro Ball,” he said. Without waiting for Yan Yu’s answer, he opened the door and walked out.
In truth, Yan Yu knew that regardless of the type of kiss, it was a bit of a boundary-cross for him and Chen Kan at this stage. But the atmosphere was strange. Yan Yu felt as though his brain had turned into a mess of paste. It felt as if, at that moment, a white butterfly had flown into his world and landed gently on his slowly collapsing emotional walls.
By the time Yan Yu finished work, the sky was completely dark. However, he did not go straight home. He turned into a convenience store along the way.
He stood before the shelves for a moment, then reached out to take a box of XXXL-sized condoms and walked to the counter to check out. The clerk scanned the code and bagged the item.
Yan Yu paid and took the bag. Once he stepped out of the store, he took the box out of the bag and put it in his coat pocket. As he pressed the accelerator, the box in his pocket rested lightly against his thigh.
On the way home, Yan Yu thought that he probably would never want to break up with Chen Kan out of guilt again.
During a red light, Yan Yu pulled out his phone and composed a message to Chen Kan. It was a sentence without much context, but both the sender and the receiver would understand.
[No Business, Adjourn the Court]: How do you want me to pursue you?
Chen Kan’s reply was fast, though it contained no meaningful information.
[Shen Ge]: …
Before Chen Kan could finish sending whatever he was typing, Yan Yu sent his next sentence. The words were as direct as his usual style of speaking and acting.
[No Business, Adjourn the Court]: Does letting you fuck me count as pursuing you?
Five kilometers away, Chen Kan, who was preparing dog food, shattered the dog’s food bowl.
