- Chapter 29 - Because I Have Never Been Anyone’s Firm Choice
What else was there?
There were Chen Kan’s muscular arms, his strong and powerful thighs, and his firm chest and abdominal muscles. There was also Chen Kan’s calm way of handling things, his increasingly gentle and meticulous treatment, and a temperament that provided a growing sense of security.
Yan Yu could not explain it clearly, but his breath hitched for several seconds.
Suddenly, Yan Yu looked up in a state of near self-abandonment. He stared into Chen Kan’s eyes at close range. They reflected the residual glimmer of light from outside the window along with the vague, cold silhouette of his own face. He felt the arm around his lower back tighten further, Chen Kan’s knuckles pressing through the soft fabric against his tense skin.
In a moment of desperation, Yan Yu lunged forward and kissed Chen Kan’s full lips heavily.
It was not like a typical kiss. It was more of a silent, angry bite. Yan Yu’s teeth ground against Chen Kan’s lower lip. In a rare display of initiative, he used his tongue to pry open Chen Kan’s teeth, allowing his hot breath to puff against Chen Kan’s handsome face and high nose bridge.
Immediately after, Chen Kan’s scorching and chaotic breath flooded in like a tide. Yan Yu’s body stiffened. His fingers instinctively gripped the fabric of Chen Kan’s shoulders, and a short, muffled groan escaped his throat. He wanted to jump down from Chen Kan’s arms immediately, but Chen Kan did not allow it.
Chen Kan gripped the back of Yan Yu’s neck firmly, pressing Yan Yu’s thin body even harder against his own. His other hand slid down the line of Yan Yu’s lean waist, moving beneath the thin loungewear with a suggestive touch. He clearly felt every bit of stiffness and trembling in Yan Yu’s body.
Yan Yu rarely initiated kisses. Even three years ago when they were in a relationship, Yan Yu was more accustomed to passive endurance. His eyelashes fluttered violently as he was kissed. His innate coldness and pride were being washed away by a surge of vivid passion.
It was like pouring hot water over ice. He felt like a slender youth on the brink of collapse, possessing the chill of early spring, yet he also felt like a mature husband with a warm, comforting body temperature. These two contradictory flavors collided within him to create intense sparks. He was at once contradictory and complete, unified yet fragmented. He was as beautiful as a piece of art crafted by a merciful creator.
Chen Kan kept his eyes open, looking at Yan Yu’s elegant brow and closed eyelids from millimeters away. His mind was a chaotic blank. Eventually, he closed his eyes as well. The fingers gripping Yan Yu’s clothes slowly loosened and then tightened again. Finally, he reached for the flat chest he had been massaging for Yan Yu over the past few days.
There was very little flesh on a man’s flat chest. However, it did not matter. As long as one patiently pressed certain acupoints, even barren glands could expand and secrete a wonderful fluid.
“Did you do it with Fu Guanqi?” Chen Kan’s voice was terrifyingly low. He insisted on asking while Yan Yu was at his most incoherent. “How many times did you do it?”
“I do not know,” Yan Yu’s voice was broken and raspy. “I cannot tell them apart anymore.”
Yan Yu truly could not distinguish them. He was dizzy from the kissing, his heart was irritable, and his mind was a mess. He realized his memory had become strange. At times, he felt he was the tragic Cold Prince Consort and Fu Guanqi was his long-dead husband. At other times, he felt he and Fu Guanqi were merely high school classmates. These two identities intertwined like flowers seen through a fog, making it impossible to tell what was real or what era he was in. Some things were blurred, and others were inexplicable. All that remained was a vague, subtle feeling.
“Did you two kiss?” Chen Kan’s kisses became even hotter and more unavoidable, carrying a hint of desperate ferocity. When his teeth accidentally grazed Yan Yu, he tasted a faint hint of blood. This slight pain actually made Yan Yu lean his body further toward him.
The two tangled in the dark corner. Their breathing grew heavier, and the friction of their clothes made a rustling sound. After an unknown amount of time, Chen Kan’s hand reached under the hem of Yan Yu’s loungewear. His broad, warm palm pressed against the cool, tense skin of Yan Yu’s waist and moved slowly upward. The lean body shook sensitively, but Yan Yu did not hide.
At that moment, Chen Kan asked the question again. “Did you two ever kiss?”
Yan Yu was kissed until he could barely breathe. When Chen Kan finally backed away slightly, both of their lips were red and swollen. Yan Yu’s cold eyes were wet with a shimmering glaze. After a long recovery, he spoke with a hoarse voice. “I do not know. I do not think so.”
Their foreheads pressed together, and their noses brushed as their hot breath fanned across each other’s faces. Chen Kan’s thumb stroked Yan Yu’s swollen lower lip with considerable force. His voice was incredibly raspy as he whispered against Yan Yu’s ear. “Did you two ever date seriously?”
Yan Yu’s chest heaved violently. His eyes were redder than before, and his wet eyelashes were clumped together. He looked at Chen Kan with a wandering gaze. Within his eyes swirled lingering passion, confusion, and a hint of fragile bewilderment. He did not answer immediately. He simply sat with his mouth slightly open, thinking expressionlessly for a while before giving a nearly imperceptible shake of his head.
“No.”
“You never dated?” Chen Kan shifted Yan Yu on his lap to confirm again. “So you dated me back then only because I looked like Fu Guanqi?”
Yan Yu’s train of thought faltered. He narrowed his eyes, seemingly remembering their roles again. “What nonsense are you talking about? Did your father not kidnap me, and then you inherited me from him?” Yan Yu spoke with a hint of disdain. “Who is dating you?”
Chen Kan stared at him for a few seconds and then kissed him again with a sense of indignation. This time, the kisses fell on Yan Yu’s flushed eyelids and wet lashes. He then moved down the cheek and stopped at Yan Yu’s slightly bobbing Adam’s apple. Yan Yu tilted his head back, his neck stretching into a fragile and beautiful arc. He closed his eyes, his fingers unconsciously clenching the fabric on Chen Kan’s back into a ball.
Chen Kan’s kisses were scalding. As they landed on his skin, they caused a faint tremor. He stopped asking if they looked alike. Instead, he used his lips, teeth, and tongue to leave clear, hot marks all over Yan Yu. The air grew hotter, steaming with a damp atmosphere.
Chen Kan asked Yan Yu a question he had asked countless times before. “If Fu Guanqi died so long ago and I look so much like him, why do you still remember him so fondly?” He wanted to know why Yan Yu loved him so deeply. He firmly believed the answer to this question was related to Yan Yu’s current inner demon.
The two stared at each other in the darkness for several seconds. Yan Yu’s lips were swollen, his collar was pulled open, and his collarbone and chest were covered in ambiguous red marks. He turned his face away and reached out to straighten his messy clothes with unsteady fingers. However, he still answered the question.
Chen Kan would remember this answer for the rest of his life.
Yan Yu said, “Because I have never been anyone’s firm choice, except for Fu Guanqi.”
Chen Kan hardly slept that night after hearing that answer. He lay on his side in the darkness, hearing only the low hum of the air conditioner and the overly clear sound of his own heartbeat. He replayed that sentence over and over in his mind and then opened the book again. This time, he tried to read it from a first-person perspective.
Seven Cubs in Hand, the World is Mine: Survival Records of the Cold Prince Consort.
The Cold Prince Consort came from humble beginnings. He was sold to a brothel by his own parents at birth because he was intersex. The madam raised him, intending for him to take clients when he grew up. At age eight, he found an opportunity to escape through a dog hole. This part of his life occupied only one paragraph in the book. Previously, Chen Kan had skimmed over it, thinking it had no similarity to Yan Yu.
He read further.
Next was his first husband, Brother Wang, a farmhand with nothing but strength who found him fainted from hunger by the river. Brother Wang traded half a bag of brown rice and some old clothes to keep him as a companion. The book said Brother Wang spoke very little but would give him the thickest part of the porridge and let him sleep on the warm end of the bed in winter. Later, Brother Wang went to the city to sell firewood and was killed in a carriage accident secretly arranged by the Chen family. The perpetrator threw down a few silver coins and vanished.
Chen Kan exited the reading interface and turned off the screen. The room became completely dark. He thought about how Yan Yu said he had never been a firm choice. The Prince Consort in the book seemed the same way. Every time he grasped a bit of stability, he was thrown back to square one. This lasted until he met Fu Guanqi. In Yan Yu’s perception, Fu Guanqi chose him, and death had frozen that choice in time, ensuring it could never be overturned by future facts.
Even the title of the book was a clue he had never considered. The value of this Prince Consort was always tied to his beauty, sexual utility, and even his fertility, rather than his intrinsic value as a person. Throughout the book, with the exception of the first husband, none of the male characters loved him for who he was. Even the main character Chen Kan was identified as being obsessed with the protagonist’s sexual value rather than his personality. Only the man who was killed early on remembered the protagonist as an individual and gave him a name of his own.
Chen Kan turned off the screen. The room fell into total darkness. He remembered the first month he was with Yan Yu. Yan Yu had looked at him with a cautious gaze, saying thank you for even the smallest things like being handed a glass of water. It truly seemed like a high sense of boundaries caused by a lack of security.
However, in most cases, Yan Yu’s formidable professional abilities and life skills meant he did not need the security provided by others. Yan Yu was his own foundation. Yan Yu always projected a weak connection to the world; he was fine with people around him, but he was also fine being alone. Therefore, Chen Kan had almost never considered that Yan Yu needed to be a firm choice.
But could the subconscious mind be completely different from what is shown on the surface? Could the heart of a cold, seemingly indestructible man who appears to have no needs be a lonely island? Chen Kan realized he understood Yan Yu less and less.
Chen Kan turned off the screen again. He turned on his side and looked at the wall. The guest room next door was very quiet. Listening to the hum of the air conditioner, he involuntarily thought of Yan Yu’s sleeping face and what he planned to do tomorrow.
His preliminary plan was this: tomorrow, while Yan Yu was at work, he would have someone come to the house to “steal” the dog. He would take it to the pet hospital to be neutered, film the procedure, and send the video to Yan Yu’s email. When Yan Yu went to retrieve the dog, Chen Kan would step in and firmly choose Yan Yu.
However, that move was a bit too cruel. Moreover, after Yan Yu woke up from his inner demon state, he would likely look at Chen Kan with that cold gaze as if he were an idiot. Chen Kan was still hesitating about whether to execute the plan.
Meanwhile, in the guest bedroom on the other side of the wall, Yan Yu opened his eyes. He expressionlessly touched his chest, his gaze becoming clear. He felt his chest, which was already leaking after a few hours without being suckled, and his ears burned with heat. Recalling everything that had happened over the past few days, he decided to continue playing dumb for a few more days to keep some distance from Chen Kan. He would tell Chen Kan he had recovered later.
However, Yan Yu did not expect that someone always has to pay a price for a choice. For instance, the Prince of Mohe lost his balls.
