Chapter 2: Never Taking This Job Again
By the time Yueming returned, Fang Ying was already awake. She was sitting on the bed, staring directly at Yueming, which made Yueming feel a little self-conscious.
Seeing the other person’s gaze drop and begin to stare at her tail, Yueming felt a bit shy. She transformed into a pair of legs, retracted her sharp claws, but her eye color remained unchanged.
She placed the pearl in Fang Ying’s palm, “Here.”
Fang Ying looked at the pearl in her hand and nodded softly.
Yueming did not know her very well, only that the other party was called Fang Ying.
It was better to clarify things, Yueming sat down beside her, but as soon as she got close, the other person leaned over and rested her head on Yueming’s shoulder.
This was the first time Yueming had been so close to someone. She uncomfortably pushed the other person away, and in her panic, smelled a whiff of blood.
She reached out and pulled open Fang Ying’s collar, revealing a wound on her right shoulder that was deep enough to expose the bone. The other person hadn’t even uttered a sound despite such a large wound, and yet she had clearly healed it before.
Looking at Fang Ying’s pale face, Yueming didn’t have time to think. She lowered her head and gently licked along the line of the wound. Where her tongue touched, the flesh surged, adhered tightly together, and was covered by new skin.
Fang Ying unconsciously hugged the person in front of her tightly, biting her lip to prevent tears from falling, yet unable to ignore the light gasp caused by the itching on her right shoulder.
Hearing this, Yueming’s mind wandered a bit. She blushed and sat a little further away, but couldn’t resist sneaking a peek. When she saw the other person slowly pull her collar up, covering that expanse of snow, she couldn’t help but recall the earlier scandalous sight.
Yueming was a fish with a conscience. The other person’s physical condition was not very good, so of course, she would restrain herself.
Thinking this, she felt a little pleased with herself for her own kindness.
Where else in the sea could you find a demon as kind as her?
Because she was too excited, Yueming couldn’t control herself and transformed her fish tail again. Just as she was about to retract it, a hand covered it, stroking it back and forth.
“So beautiful.”
It was a soft compliment. Yueming looked at Fang Ying, watching her scattered black hair. She remembered that on the shore, the other person had worn a lot of jewelry and had a white lotus pattern on her forehead, dressed the same as when she played the zither by the sea that day.
But now the jewelry was gone, and the lotus on her forehead had been washed clean by the seawater.
Life on land might truly be better than life under the sea.
Seeing the other person attempt to stroke further down, Yueming grabbed her wrist, restraining herself with difficulty, and warned softly: “No.”
Fang Ying obediently retracted her hand, but her eyes were still fixed on the large tail, revealing a hint of regret, as if asking: Really not allowed?
Feeling her heart soften again, Yueming hardened her resolve and refused through gritted teeth: “No means no.”
The disappointment in the other person’s eyes grew stronger, making Yueming’s heart clench. She covered her chest, utterly confused as to why she could never refuse this person’s requests. She let go of the hand with a defeated gesture: “Just for a little while.”
Fang Ying’s eyes lit up again.
To be honest, it was very ticklish. Yueming didn’t want to admit that she was shy, so she started making small talk: “Do you have any family?”
Fang Ying nodded, her voice a little hoarse: “I have a younger sister.”
“Oh.”
The atmosphere suddenly became awkward. After a while, Yueming thought of another question: “Do you want to go home?”
Fang Ying stopped her hand movements. She asked with great confusion: “Isn’t this my home?”
Yueming choked for a moment. She looked around at the continuous expanse of coral. There was nothing else but coral. As she looked, Yueming grew uncomfortable, her expression becoming unnatural.
This really shouldn’t count as a home. At best, it’s a bed placed in a pile of coral.
The person had been successfully detained, but a host of subsequent issues remained, such as food and clothing. Most importantly, they had to find a way to save the other person’s body. She didn’t have any treasures in her possession that could save Fang Ying, but other demon kings might.
This brought up a new problem: Yueming was a fish who liked to stay at home. She usually either slept or suppressed unruly lesser demons, occasionally leaping out of the sea to sing.
So, she was genuinely not well-acquainted with the other demon kings.
She looked at Fang Ying’s right shoulder, a look of worry in her eyes, “What did you do to get hurt so badly?”
Fang Ying looked up at the Jiao-person’s eyes, which were beautiful and unique. They were different from the cat she kept in the palace; the cat seemed considerably smarter than her.
Thinking of this, Fang Ying couldn’t help but smile, but then she started to cough. Unable to support herself, she leaned against Yueming. The scent on the other person was very distinctive, without the stink of seawater, impossibly clean. Perhaps soothed by this scent, the feeling of breathlessness finally disappeared.
Seeing Yueming look down at her, her voice softened a little: “Because I did the right thing, they wanted to kill me.”
Yueming pretended to understand, “Oh, I see.”
After saying this, she looked a little gleeful: “I thought you had stolen something again and that’s why you were beaten so badly.”
Fang Ying started coughing again. Yueming immediately clamped up, thinking her words had upset the other person. She patted Fang Ying’s back while apologizing: “Alright, alright, it’s my fault.”
The coughing slowly subsided, but the person had fallen asleep on Yueming’s shoulder.
Yueming gently nudged the other person: “Wake up.”
There was no response, only warm breath puffing onto her shoulder. Yueming looked down. The other person was sleeping very soundly.
This made Yueming quite uncomfortable. Whether it was the first time they met when the other person extended her hand to her, or the ridiculous encounter when they met again, or even now, quietly leaning against her and sleeping—the other person showed no fear that humans should have toward demons.
Yueming felt her authority was compromised. Seeing the person deeply asleep, she leaned closer and made a fierce expression: “Hah!”
“Hmph! Foolish human, I’ll scare you to death!”
Fang Ying in her sleep frowned slightly, so the one who got scared was Yueming. She covered her mouth, afraid to make a sound, and only relaxed when Fang Ying’s brows smoothed out.
No! I’m a Jiao-person! Why should I be afraid?
Thinking of this, Yueming leaned in slightly again and bared her teeth at the other person’s face. The problem was, she was too close, close enough to see the fine downy hairs on the other person’s face.
Yueming couldn’t resist poking it with her finger. It was a soft sensation.
The feeling was somewhat addictive. She poked it a few more times, then followed the curve of the cheek downwards, until her fingertip and gaze rested on Fang Ying’s lips.
Yueming traced the outline of the other person’s lips. The tightly closed lips parted slightly due to her movement.
As she watched, Yueming recoiled as if shocked, mentally cursing her lack of resolve, and then couldn’t help but wonder if the other person was also a demon.
Otherwise, why is she always losing control like this?
But that was impossible. She didn’t smell any other demonic energy on Fang Ying.
Unable to figure it out, Yueming decided to take a long trip. She carefully eased Fang Ying away, settled her properly, and then instructed the jellyfish to look after Fang Ying carefully and not let any other demons approach.
“Remember to cook for her every day.”
“Don’t stay too far away from her, but don’t get too close either!”
“Remember to use your human form when she’s awake. Your true form is especially ugly; don’t scare her.”
The jellyfish’s impatience successfully escalated into fury. She almost pulled her own hair out, shouting: “You’re the ugly one!”
Yueming looked at her as if she were an idiot. There were no ugly fish in their Jiao-person tribe.
Tsk, being too beautiful just makes people jealous.
Yueming admired herself for a while, then decided to forgive the jellyfish, but it was time to leave.
Looking at Fang Ying on the bed, Yueming felt a little reluctant.
The jellyfish calmed down after being angry for a while. With her long-standing friendship with Yueming, she knew being angry was useless.
But this clumsy fish is usually indifferent to everything, and now she’s taken a keen interest in this human.
She stepped forward and patted Yueming’s shoulder, “You’re just going out for a trip. Don’t make it sound like life and death. Don’t worry, I’m here.”
Yueming nodded, “I’m leaving then.”
The jellyfish waved uncaringly, “Go on.”
The jellyfish stood in place, watching Yueming swim away and turn back three times, and couldn’t help but sigh.
The Jiao-person’s figure disappeared from her sight. She turned and sat by the bed, truly keeping her distance as Yueming had instructed.
A slight trace of demonic energy lingered around Fang Ying. The scent was very familiar; it belonged exclusively to Yueming.
The demon core was not being rejected by Fang Ying’s body, allowing her to survive in the deep sea in a human form.
The jellyfish hadn’t seen a human in a long time. Her gaze toward Fang Ying still carried a hint of wariness.
“Hmph, I’d like to see who you are.”
A pink light flew from the jellyfish’s fingertip and entered Fang Ying’s forehead.
The jellyfish closed her eyes and connected with Fang Ying’s dream.
After her consciousness landed deep in the dreamscape, the jellyfish could only see darkness, vaguely hearing sharp, piercing sounds.
“Save, save…”
“No, don’t.”
“Wait!”
The sounds were so sharp and grating. The jellyfish couldn’t stand it and covered her ears, closing her eyes. Then the world suddenly became quiet.
When she opened her eyes again, she saw someone waving at her.
“Hurry, I made the soup you love.”
The jellyfish numbly picked up the bowl of soup, seeing her own confusion reflected in the liquid.
The wind picked up, causing wrinkles on her face, and then the dream ended.
She clutched her head, opening her eyes to see a faint glow coming from Fang Ying’s chest, and Yueming’s demonic energy was significantly denser.
It seemed her dream-entering spell had been broken by the demon core, resulting in a backlash.
Her head throbbed painfully. The jellyfish couldn’t help but curse: “Tsk! That lovesick dead fish.”
The jellyfish became compliant. She used her demonic arts to soothe herself and casually set up a barrier to protect the ancestor left behind by their ancestor.
But after only two steps, she realized something was wrong. She sniffed and smelled blood.
Following the scent, she turned around and found the smell of blood was coming from Fang Ying, lying on the bed.
Confirming again, it was definitely coming from Fang Ying’s right shoulder.
Sensing it through the clothes, the jellyfish gasped sharply.
“What a deep wound.”
She covered it with her demonic power, but her hand was scorched.
The smell of blood grew stronger. The jellyfish panicked, forced a wry smile: “It’s just a dream-entering spell! You don’t have to fake an injury on me!”
She used various healing spells, but they still couldn’t stop the wound from enlarging. The jellyfish was sweating profusely from anxiety.
Suddenly, the wound stopped expanding after reaching a certain size.
The jellyfish breathed a sigh of relief, then felt that something was profoundly wrong.
Since when do wounds grow on their own and then stop on their own?
She was utterly baffled. She could only use her demonic energy to wrap around the injured area for the time being.
Although she couldn’t heal it, at least it could alleviate the pain.
The jellyfish looked at the burn on her palm and couldn’t help but complain: “Tsk, I’m never taking a job like this again!”
At this moment, Yueming, who had already gone far, looked back. For some reason, she always felt uneasy in her heart.
Thinking about Fang Ying’s injury, she suppressed the odd feeling and swam rapidly in the southwest direction.
She hadn’t seen that sea serpent in a long time. This time, she had to be a little more graceful when “borrowing” the treasure.
