Chapter 1: Will She Like It?
In this world, humans, demons, and gods coexist.
Mortals worship the gods, building temples and offering incense.
Demons are few in number, constrained by the gods, and live far away from human settlements.
Humans and demons were not meant to meet, but there are always exceptions.
The prolonged sound of a zither penetrated the depths of the sea, awakening a sleeping mermaid. She peeked out of the water, slowly approaching with a sway of her tail.
A beautiful woman sat alone by the sea. A guqin rested on her lap. Her fingers were long and slender, and her red clothes were striking. She watched the merfolk behind the reef without fear, her gaze cool and detached.
Yueming, having lived in the deep sea for a long time, had never seen such a beautiful woman and was momentarily captivated.
The woman slightly raised the corner of her lips, “Would you like to be my friend?”
Yueming was seduced. She manifested legs to approach the woman, and then she was knocked unconscious by the zither. When she woke up, her demon core was gone.
“This is your own stupidity! Knocked out by this human, and you call yourself a merfolk!”
Yueming, angered by her friend’s merciless teasing, snapped the coral in her hand, then hurled the broken piece at the gloating jellyfish.
The jellyfish dodged skillfully, transformed into human form, and sat beside the unconscious human, frowning at the hickeys on her neck.
“You controlled her, didn’t you?”
She looked at the dazed, tail-swaying Yueming and couldn’t help but warn her: “The Goddess awakens once every five hundred years. If she finds out about this, your life might be in danger.”
Yueming flinched, and her fish tail settled down. She was a little scared of the Goddess, too.
Five hundred years ago, this sea area was not as peaceful as it was now. The demon race caused trouble, came ashore, and completely consumed the villages by the coast.
Yueming was sleeping at the time, then suddenly felt a pang in her heart. She swam out to the surface and looked up to see someone standing in the clouds. With a gentle wave of that person’s hand, thousands of thunderbolts struck.
Yueming witnessed the fate of those demons, and sometimes when she slept, she still had nightmares, dreaming of the lightning that day.
She shivered and said somewhat defensively, “She stole my demon core first.”
“Then dig out the demon core, break the control, erase her memories, and send her back.”
“That won’t do!”
The jellyfish narrowed her eyes at her, “You wouldn’t like her, would you?”
Yueming looked confused, “Of course not.”
She just craved the liar’s body.
Having stayed in the sea too long, Yueming didn’t quite understand a thing like love. She felt she had simply found a beloved toy and didn’t want to let go.
Furthermore, the other person’s body was in terrible condition. If the demon core were removed, she would die instantly.
Yueming silently calculated in her heart: First, this person stole her demon core, so she was at fault first. Second, she, the great fish, didn’t bother with petty people and left the demon core to sustain the other person’s life—this was her great benevolence.
All she did was collect a tiny bit of interest.
After concluding her self-justification, Yueming felt that even if she were reported to the Goddess’s presence, her crime wouldn’t warrant death.
Unless this person was the reincarnation of the Goddess, but how could that be?
After a round of self-comfort, Yueming grabbed the jellyfish, who was still trying to persuade her, and flung her away. She flew quite far.
Yueming clapped her hands, and a flicker of thought crossed her sapphire eyes.
Human food seemed to be different from what demons ate, but due to the events of five hundred years ago, the environment in this sea area was extremely harsh, and no one lived nearby.
Yueming bit her nail in frustration, her ear fins flapping up and down from annoyance, almost becoming a blur.
She suddenly remembered something and quickly swam to retrieve the jellyfish she had flung far away.
“Ugh!”
The jellyfish constantly retched but had nothing to throw up. Just as she started to feel better, Yueming grabbed her by the collar and shook her.
“Hurry up, teach me how to cook!”
The shaking was so violent that the jellyfish couldn’t maintain her human form. With a bip sound, she reverted to a pink jellyfish and promptly passed out.
Just as Yueming considered resorting to violent means to wake up her friend, she was hugged from behind.
The person behind her placed her palm on Yueming’s waist, a warmth different from other creatures. It was tracing her scales one by one, moving downward.
Any further down would be too sensitive. Yueming pulled the hand away to stop her, her face turning bright red, stammering, “You, you mustn’t touch.”
But the other person ignored her, trying to struggle free.
Helpless, Yueming gently broke free from the embrace and used her demonic power to bind the other’s hands.
She cautiously maintained a distance, wondering if she had controlled her too severely; the other person seemed excessively…
However, the power of seduction through voice was a merfolk ability. The other merfolk had been turned into grilled fish during the thunder tribulation five hundred years ago, so she had no one to ask.
While she was lost in thought, the other person started coughing, falling to the ground from exhaustion.
At this, Yueming no longer cared about anything else. She picked the person up, put her back on the bed, and felt her pulse, drawing a sharp breath.
Aside from having a breath and warmth, the other person was practically the same as a dead person. Although her demon core was repairing the damaged body, the progress was agonizingly slow.
Yueming used a demonic spell to ease her discomfort, then prepared to leave.
The lesson from five hundred years ago was clearly not profound enough. The Goddess had not appeared for a long time, and the newly born demons in the sea had lost their sense of reverence. They disregarded the teachings of their elders, determined to go ashore.
Yueming checked the demons in her territory every day, preventing them from secretly going off to cause trouble.
But just as she swam a short distance, the liar’s cough behind her became more pronounced. Turning around, she found the person had fallen off the bed and was reaching out to her.
“Don’t go.”
Yueming picked her up again and put her back on the bed. Her plan was interrupted, and she wanted to be angry, but looking at the frail way the person leaned against her, she couldn’t bring herself to say anything harsh.
She gently peeled the hands off her, softly coaxing, “You sleep first. I’ll be back in a while.”
Only when the other’s eyes gradually glazed over and closed did Yueming let out a sigh of relief.
She hadn’t used her voice to seduce anyone in a long time and was afraid of losing control, but it seemed fine for now.
She turned and casually retrieved the jellyfish from the floor before heading out.
There was no sunlight in the deep sea, but that wasn’t a problem for a merfolk.
She swam too fast, forcing the jellyfish to open her eyes.
“Let go! My tentacles are going to be ripped off!”
Yueming released her when she saw she was awake, ignoring her angry protests, and went straight to the point: “Have you gone to check the count?”
The jellyfish transformed into human form. Rubbing her red wrists, she couldn’t help but roll her eyes: “Yes, I went. Why are you so afraid?”
The jellyfish was also a demon who materialized after that catastrophe, but compared to the other restless demons, she was very reassuring.
Yueming couldn’t be bothered to explain to her. In her mind flashed the image of the thousands of thunderbolts over the sea, and the person on the thundercloud who seemed to have seen her and met her gaze.
Yueming’s ear fins drooped. How could she not be afraid? She could certainly lord it over this deep sea, but this sea area should originally have been much wider.
She sighed, giving up on the thought.
She had settled down honestly in this water for so long and had restrained some demons from going ashore. Surely the Goddess had to be somewhat reasonable.
Yueming sped up her swimming. She counted the demons again. The number was correct.
“Yueming, I heard you picked up a human? What’s the matter? Did you decide to eat meat?”
The demon in the red dress hadn’t fully materialized. Her hands were still pincers, snapping and clacking as she moved them.
She was taunting Yueming, her eyes glinting with a different kind of greed.
Yueming stared at her coldly, “Fu, you want to eat her?”
Fu licked her lips, indicating neither yes nor no, but her smile froze. She realized Yueming was looking at her, and those eyes were utterly devoid of warmth.
She had heard that Yueming had lost her demon core and dared to be presumptuous, but being stared at like this made her feel fear again, so she lowered her head, not daring to look up.
Yueming glanced around. No demon dared to meet her eyes directly.
She was very satisfied with the effect and snorted, then swam back.
The jellyfish caught up to her, furious, cursing those ungrateful wretches all the way.
“They obviously think you lost your demon core and want to devour you! Hurry up and take the demon core out!”
“Did you hear me? If you can’t do it, I will!”
Yueming listened to her nagging all the way, only reacting to that last sentence.
She knew her friend was right, but she just couldn’t bear to do it. It was as if the one who had been seduced wasn’t the human, but her, the merfolk.
But since the jellyfish was saying this, she really might go and kill the human. Yueming immediately placed a spell on the jellyfish, so fast that she couldn’t react in time.
Seeing the small fish-shaped rune on the back of her hand, the jellyfish lost it. She screamed, “You scent-obsessed fish who abandons friends for lovers!”
Yueming covered her ears, and only released her hands when the other person quieted down. Perhaps feeling her friend hadn’t been angered to death yet, she added fuel to the fire, “You know how to cook, teach me.”
The jellyfish was distraught. She swam faster, trying to shake off the merfolk but was quickly caught up to.
Yueming blocked her, “That spell will only stop you from harming Fang Ying, nothing else.”
The jellyfish frowned, “Fang Ying? Is that the human’s name?”
Yueming nodded. She showed her innocence when the environment was safe. She was actually quite curious about life on shore. The jellyfish didn’t originally live in her sea area; she had picked her up from the coast.
When she found her, the jellyfish had been chewed down to only a partial body. Yueming saved her with her own blood and learned that she had been injured by humans.
At that time, she had mocked the jellyfish for being beaten up by humans. Now she, too, had been knocked out by a human with a zither. Speaking of which, she, the merfolk, was more embarrassing.
She had never asked about the jellyfish’s past and didn’t know why she refused to take a name for herself, but now she was very curious: “Is the place where humans live better than the bottom of the sea?”
The merfolk’s eyes were very pure. The jellyfish momentarily forgot her anger. She reverted to her original form and swam slowly, her voice subdued: “Yes, the place where humans live is ten million times better than this. The buildings are tall, the colors are vibrant, there are countless jewels, and it is a place favored by the sun.”
Yueming followed behind her, listening. She thought of her own dwelling. Not only could she not see the light, but besides a bed, there was nothing else—it was truly shabby.
She hadn’t noticed this problem before, but now she wondered if the other person would find it uncomfortable to live there.
However, she couldn’t find the gold and jade jewels the jellyfish mentioned in the sea, only…
Yueming stopped. She thought of every unhappy thing to make a single tear fall. The tear turned into a white, shimmering pearl, resting in her palm.
I wonder if she will like this.
The jellyfish waited for her ahead. Seeing her like this, she couldn’t help but shake her head, though she did remember the name Fang seemed to be a royal surname.
But there are so many people surnamed Fang; it doesn’t necessarily mean she’s royal.
Looking at the little fish mark on her hand, the jellyfish sighed deeply.
A love-struck, lustful fish.
