- The Cold, Aloof Senior Sister Deserves To Be Paired With A Peerless Beauty
- Chapter 3 - Master of the Mu Household
Can she save the “future gold mine” today?
A warm sun and a gentle breeze drifted through the window, yet Chi Li felt an unnatural chill. Deep within her lowered eyes, an unreadable, dark turbulence flickered.
Feeling the cold sweat on Chi Li’s brow and seeing her pale complexion, Mu Zhi panicked. She kept her hand on Chi Li’s forehead, but felt no feverish heat. Fearing that the illnesses of cultivators might be as extraordinary as their powers, Mu Zhi spoke up anxiously.
“Are you feeling unwell? Should I send people to find rare medicinal herbs?”
Mu Zhi lowered her hand and took out a clean silk handkerchief, carefully wiping the cold sweat from Chi Li’s brow. “Why the cold sweat? Do cultivators have nightmares too?” Mu Zhi whispered in confusion.
Chi Li composed herself. After a long silence, she spoke in a heavy voice, as if not yet fully detached from the nightmare. “I did indeed have a nightmare.”
Mu Zhi paused her movements and tilted her head curiously. “Was the dream very scary?”
Chi Li didn’t answer. The moment the other girl lowered her hand, a hint of sweet fragrance from her sleeve wafted into Chi Li’s nose. Seeking confirmation, Chi Li tested, “You made Peach Blossom Crisps?”
As she spoke, Chi Li’s gaze landed on the plate of pastries on the table.
Hearing this, Mu Zhi immediately forgot the unanswered question. She looked at Chi Li with surprise, her eyes filled with undisguised admiration. “Immortal Sister, you’re amazing! How did you know I made these?”
Chi Li remained silent, staring at the pastries with clouded thoughts. Having lived for so long and experienced such bizarre events, returning to the past was no longer enough to keep her startled for long. She forced herself to stay calm, recalling the events that were supposed to happen today.
Suddenly remembering something, Chi Li stood up abruptly. Without even putting on shoes, she rushed to the window, her hem brushing against Mu Zhi’s hand. Mu Zhi stared blankly at Chi Li’s retreating figure, subconsciously touching the back of her hand where the fabric had lingered.
When Chi Li reached the window and saw a half-dead black bird outside, she frowned and asked the approaching Mu Zhi, “Did it hurt you?”
This was no ordinary bird, it was a demonic creature that fed on human flesh. To a regular cultivator, it was a mere nuisance, but to a mortal, it was extremely dangerous. Coldly, Chi Li grabbed Mu Zhi’s wrist to check for injuries.
The warmth of Chi Li’s palm through her sleeve caused Mu Zhi to blush. Seeing Chi Li so anxious for her safety, Mu Zhi felt her face grow hot. She pulled back slightly, looking away, and whispered, “I’m fine.”
She paused, then pointed at the bird on the ground. “That bird… I think I killed it with one slap.”
Chi Li froze, then her expression softened. She tucked a stray hair behind Mu Zhi’s ear and let out a soft, praising laugh. “Good. It’s best that it’s dead.”
Mu Zhi blinked. Up close, she could see herself reflected in the Immortal Sister’s gentle eyes. “Immortal Sister… don’t you think I’m too strong?”
Chi Li shook her head, a smile playing on her lips. She patted Mu Zhi’s head and said firmly, “There is nothing wrong with a girl protecting herself. Being strong is simply a means of self-defense. No one will dislike you for it, if they do, they are certainly not a good person.”
Her tone grew heavier, harboring a murderous intent not directed at the girl before her. “A true powerhouse does not fear you becoming stronger. Only the weak fear that.”
Mu Zhi was bewildered. Chi Li’s words felt so solemn, almost like a dying wish. Sensing she had been too intense for a young girl who had just come of age, Chi Li was about to apologize when Mu Zhi nodded seriously. “I understand. I will remember.”
Chi Li sighed and turned back to the bird’s corpse. Her eyes turned cold as a talisman appeared between her fingers. With a flick and a whispered incantation, the paper erupted into flames, incinerating only the bird. A wisp of black smoke tried to flee, but it hit an invisible spiritual barrier and was burned to nothingness.
“Immortal Sister, what was that?” Mu Zhi asked.
“Demonic energy,” Chi Li replied coldly.
Mu Zhi frowned indignantly. “It’s this demonic energy that made my mother bedridden.” She then smiled at Chi Li. “I’m so lucky I met you.”
“Your mother…” Chi Li’s voice trailed off as her face suddenly changed. She grabbed Mu Zhi’s hand and leaped out the window.
“Wait, there’s a door!” Mu Zhi’s cry was cut short. Chi Li, perhaps finding it too slow, simply swept Mu Zhi into her arms and began to run.
“Don’t move,” Chi Li commanded.
As they neared Mu Zhi’s mother’s courtyard, Chi Li’s eyes were filled with ice. In her past life, Chi Li had met a lost Mu Zhi during her travels. When she escorted her home, her Frost Sword had vibrated, sensing the demonic aura over the Mu estate. Back then, Chi Li had failed to save Mu Zhi’s mother, which eventually led to her taking Mu Zhi to the Cangqing Sect.
They landed in the courtyard. The sunlight couldn’t penetrate the heavy demonic mist gathered above. Chi Li handed Mu Zhi a talisman and asked coldly, “Is your father here?”
Mu Zhi nodded. “He came this morning, saying he found a divine physician for Mother.”
Chi Li’s eyes sharpened as she stared at the closed doors of the main room. “Strange,” Mu Zhi whispered, “where did all the servants go?”
Without hesitation, Chi Li kicked the door open. Mu Zhi followed closely, clutching the talisman for comfort. Inside, the bitter smell of medicine was overwhelming. A frail figure behind the bed curtains was coughing violently.
Two figures stood by the bed. One was a handsome man with eyes full of hidden malice; the other was shrouded in a black robe with a large hood. They turned in shock as Chi Li burst in.
Chi Li glanced at Mu Zhi’s father, making him shiver, before fixing her gaze on the hooded figure. She drew the Frost Sword, her aura oppressive.
The hooded man immediately pushed Mu Zhi’s father forward. The father, trembling with guilt, tried to block Chi Li. “Immortal, what are you doing?”
Mu Zhi pointed at the hooded man. “Who is this? Why is he in my mother’s room?”
“This… this is the physician I told you about…” her father stammered.
Chi Li pressed her sword against his throat. “Colluding with the Demon Race, do you know the consequences?”
The father continued to lie, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Chi Li kicked him with such force that he flew out of the room. The hooded man tried to flee, but Chi Li kicked him as well, knocking off his robe to reveal demonic markings on his face. Seeing the secret was out, the father spat blood and shrieked, “How dare you! I am innocent!”
“Let’s see what the Master of the Mu House has to say,” Chi Li sneered. She threw the Frost Sword, piercing the hooded man’s skull. Black mist hissed from the wound, but Chi Li trapped it with a talisman.
Meanwhile, Mu Zhi helped her mother up. After Chi Li administered a pill, the mother’s face remained pale but her eyes regained a piercing, authoritative light. She looked at the man outside and spoke with icy dignity.
“You were married into the Mu family. I never mistreated you. Even when I divorced you, I did not leave you without wealth. Yet you are so vicious that you would commit murder for my property.”
The man outside screamed in agony as the demonic energy consumed him from the inside out. “You divorced me! Even if I wronged you, you shouldn’t have made me the laughingstock of the city!” He eventually dissolved into a pool of foul-smelling blood.
Mu Zhi felt no sadness for her father’s death. He had tried to kill her mother to her, he was no father at all. She simply pouted and leaned into her mother’s arms. “Mother, that’s going to be so hard to clean up.”
