- Chapter 5 - Elementary School Tattletale
Inside the Chinese-style bedroom, two suitcases sat right in the middle of the room.
Sitting on a chair by the window, Xu Qiduo watched as Second Mom patiently offered a long string of earnest instructions at the doorway before finally leaving.
The boy standing by the door did not see how Second Mom’s smile instantly vanished the moment she turned around, but Xu Qiduo had a crystal-clear view from his vantage point.
Seeing that Second Mom was gone, he spoke up: “Close the door first. By the way, what’s your name?”
“Zhou Mengxing.” Zhou Mengxing closed the bedroom door.
“My name is Xu Qiduo. How old are you?”
“Eighteen.”
“Where do you go to school?”
“Uncle Xu arranged for me to attend N University.”
“Oh! Then we’re at the same school. Are you a freshman?”
“Mm.”
Answering every single question one by one, it felt just like undergoing a household registration check.
The room fell silent for a moment as Xu Qiduo stopped talking, but then he piped up again: “I have a question.”
“Go ahead.” Zhou Mengxing’s tone remained flat throughout, distant yet docile.
“Are you actually Second Dad’s son?”
Stories about the stepson of a deceased first-love girlfriend had a remarkably low level of credibility.
With no family ties and no blood relation, adopting an adult child out of nowhere was something ordinary people simply wouldn’t do.
“No. My biological father is in Nancheng.”
“Huh?” Bringing up such a topic during a first meeting was admittedly a bit awkward, but Xu Qiduo was genuinely curious. Still, on second thought, the absolute truth of the matter would bound to be uncovered by someone in the household sooner or later.
“Ah, right!” Xu Qiduo changed the subject. He stood up and walked toward the door, pulling Zhou Mengxing’s arm to draw him further into the room as he passed by him.
Next, he carefully cracked the door open a sliver, and seeing that no one was outside, he pulled the door wider and poked his entire head out into the hallway.
After that, he closed the door and turned the lock.
With a shifty expression, he rubbed his hands together like a fly and chuckled with a mischievous grin: “Heh heh, now there are only the two of us in the room.”
The handsome face didn’t show a single ripple of emotion, and even the spot where Zhou Mengxing was standing was just where momentum had left him after being pulled along.
Yet this cold composure didn’t make Xu Qiduo feel awkward in the slightest.
He kept rubbing his hands, walked right up to Zhou Mengxing, and just as he raised a hand to reach out, he paused awkwardly: “Tsk, how tall are you?”
“One hundred eighty-eight centimeters.” His tone matched the flat cadence from earlier when answering household questions.
“So tall?” Xu Qiduo straightened his back with a hint of defiance.
He reached up to hook his arm around the other’s neck, pressing him down slightly, leaned in close to his ear, and whispered: “Watch out for your second mom. Oh wait, my second mom. Watch out for the second mistress. Don’t let her warm attitude fool you; it’s all fake. Behind your back, she is fierce! She definitely doesn’t like you.”
He sounded just like an elementary school student who liked sneaking off to tell tales.
After finishing, Xu Qiduo let go, took a step back to put some distance between them, turned around, and went to sit on a nearby sofa.
Zhou Mengxing remained slightly hunched over with his head lowered, his gaze gradually drifting toward the chair Xu Qiduo had just occupied. Seeing that the other was already busy playing on his phone, he slowly straightened his posture.
“I know.”
“Well then, hurry up and unpack. Are you heading back to school later?” Xu Qiduo asked offhandedly.
“Are we going back together?” Zhou Mengxing asked with a hint of confusion.
Xu Qiduo had just called a landlord in his mobile card game: “Huh? Oh, you aren’t going back? Then I’m heading out first.”
Without even raising his eyes from the phone in his hands, he walked right out of the room.
Once one of the two occupants left, the room instantly quieted down.
Zhou Mengxing remained standing right where he was, his eyes lowered, appearing to zone out, yet his gaze was tightly focused on the chair Xu Qiduo had just been sitting on.
