- Chapter 12 - Cannon Fodder Ex-Boyfriend (12), Finding Pleasure in Helping Others
Golden leaves drifted down with the wind. Warm sunlight filtered through the branches and fell onto the road covered in withered leaves, forming patches of mottled light and shadow.
Li Qingran pulled up the strap of his backpack. His peach blossom eyes, hidden beneath the brim of his hat, curved slightly:
“I know, Teacher. Rest assured, I will definitely work hard over the next few days to complete the project. Please do not say that; this was a sudden occurrence on my end as well. Okay, no problem, I will certainly pass your words along. Also, Teacher, because this matter is not particularly certain for me yet, could you please not mention that I am leaving?”
Li Qingran’s voice came to an abrupt halt as a sports car suddenly appeared in his line of sight.
He had initially assumed the person in the car was Su Jingyi, but to his surprise, when the car door opened, a strange Omega stepped out.
He wore a light gray casual suit and clutched an unknown silver chain in his left hand. Beneath his fluffy and smooth short chestnut hair, a pair of light brown eyes stared fixedly at Li Qingran with an obscure, unreadable expression.
What did this mean?
Li Qingran blinked in confusion and then looked around his surroundings. He was not blocking the way.
[Oh, Host! You forgot! This is the second male lead, the Protagonist Shou’s childhood friend, the Omega who suddenly went into Heat in the private booth and hugged you, insisting that you mark him!]
The memory of the failed attempt to clock out suddenly attacked Li Qingran’s brain, allowing him to match the person before him with the face full of flushes and tears in his mind.
So it was him.
In that case, the issue was not whether he was blocking the road or not; the other party was clearly there to intercept him.
Having realized this, Li Qingran offered a smile to the Omega who had been staring at him in silence. He then turned slightly and spoke softly into the phone:
“It is fine, Teacher. I just ran into a friend. Okay, I will contact you later. Yes, thank you for your trouble, okay.”
The Alpha, who was always kind to others, usually maintained a gentle and humble posture whether he was doing tasks or speaking. However, he also had his own persistence and bottom lines; he insisted on handling matters according to his own habits and order.
Qi Ziyan silently gazed at his slightly curved profile. He watched as Li Qingran’s right hand instinctively tightened its grip on the backpack strap, causing veins to pop slightly. The chain in Qi Ziyan’s own hand slipped abruptly to his fingertips upon hearing the word “friend.” Yet, before even a second could pass, it was pulled back into his palm. The hexagram on the chain sank once more into his soft flesh, even deeper than before.
Li Qingran did not notice Qi Ziyan’s movements. After finalizing the time to hand over materials with his supervisor, he hung up the phone. He turned toward the Omega and smiled slightly:
“I am sorry to have kept you waiting.”
His voice carried a clear sense of apology and was very gentle, making it so that even if one could not see his face clearly, they could feel his sincere regret.
The dissatisfaction that had risen in Qi Ziyan’s heart because the Alpha ignored him to talk on the phone vanished miraculously. But before his brow could fully relax, Li Qingran’s next sentence made him tense up all over again.
“I remember you are Jingyi’s friend, right? Is there something you need me for? Does it have to do with Jingyi?”
Qi Ziyan remained silent.
In one short sentence, the name “Jingyi” appeared twice, as if Li Qingran was afraid he would not know that the Alpha and Su Jingyi shared an unusually close relationship. Meanwhile, he was just a “friend” standing on the side, watching their intimate life, a friend who did not even deserve to have his name mentioned.
He had not even mentioned what happened in the private booth that day. Did he not remember? Or did he want to simply brush that matter aside for the sake of a certain someone?
Why? On what grounds?!
Qi Ziyan’s fingers tightened further. The silver hexagram sank deep into his palm, its sharp corners rubbing against the soft flesh as if it might pierce the fragile skin at any moment and stain the half-broken chain with blood. The Omega’s eyes turned red as he stared deathly at Li Qingran, looking extremely angry.
But what was he angry about? Li Qingran did not quite understand.
[He is probably angry that a scum man like you still has the nerve to call the Protagonist Shou’s name so intimately at a time like this.]
888 helped analyze the situation:
[It is not easy, Host! After doing this mission for so long, there is finally a character who recognizes your status as a scum man!]
Is that so?
Li Qingran raised an eyebrow and looked down at the puffed-up Omega again. Seeing the blatant accusation in the other’s eyes, he felt that 888’s reasoning made some sense.
[Then why did he come to find me? Surely not just to glare at me?]
Li Qingran tugged at his backpack strap. His lips moved, and just as he was about to ask the Omega what he wanted, the other spoke up furiously:
“I am Qi Ziyan!”
“I am sorry?”
“I said, my name is Qi Ziyan!” Seeing the obvious confusion in Li Qingran’s eyes, Qi Ziyan emphasized it once more.
“Yes, okay. Qi Ziyan, hello.”
Li Qingran nodded with a slight delay. After a pause, under the Omega’s gaze, he hesitantly patted his chest with his right hand:
“I am Li Qingran.”
“I know!” the Omega replied immediately.
Li Qingran asked, “So, what exactly did you come to see me for?”
He could not have come just to introduce himself. The thin lips behind the mask pursed slightly, and Li Qingran tugged his backpack strap once again.
However, he still did not get a clear answer from the Omega. Even Qi Ziyan himself did not know why he had impulsively rushed to the Alpha’s school. In the nearly ten minutes since appearing before the man, he had only introduced his name.
What on earth was he doing?
His head, which had become heated because of that black uniform, cooled down bit by bit in the awkward atmosphere of meeting the Alpha. His reason gradually returned. As a cool breeze blew past, Qi Ziyan finally woke up.
“I, I,”
The pale Omega instinctively bit his lip. His rapidly reddening lips stood out against his fair skin, yet they did not receive the pity he expected from the person before him. They could only tremble pitifully before he spat out a reason, one that an Omega usually detested and looked down upon, one with clear provocative intent:
“I just came to tell you that Xiao Jiu is about to get engaged to Old Gu! Nothing good will come of you continuing to be entangled with him!”
The Omega’s voice was loud and clear, making the branches overhead seem to tremble. A leaf that was already hanging by a thread finally broke away from its branch, spinning and floating down with the wind.
Li Qingran gave a light chuckle: “So you are here to persuade me to leave Jingyi?”
“Not exactly,”
A look of annoyance appeared on Qi Ziyan’s face, though it was unclear if he regretted the reason he just gave or if he was unhappy with Li Qingran’s bluntness. He looked conflicted, his brow knit into a clear knot. His lips moved as if he wanted to explain something, but in the end, that long-contemplated explanation turned into a single sentence:
“Are you willing?”
Li Qingran replied, “If Jingyi tells me himself, I will agree.”
Primarily, his unilateral agreement would not be of much use anyway.
Qi Ziyan asked, “Can you not just take the initiative to leave?”
There was a strange sense of urgency in the Omega’s eyes:
“Actually, you do not even like him that much, do you? Why must you stay entangled with him?! Would it not be better to let go? If you are worried that you will not find someone with better conditions after leaving him, I can help you,”
Qi Ziyan could not help but take a step forward, further shortening the distance between him and Li Qingran. The faint scent of ice and snow touched his cheeks, which were flushed with excitement, making him even more exhilarated while he wanted to move even closer.
However, in the next second, a cold sensation touched his forehead.
In his line of sight, the tall Alpha used a single finger to stop his instinctively leaning body. The Alpha’s eyes were slightly lowered; beneath the wide brim of the hat, his black hair shielded his eyes. Under the added shadows, his expression became increasingly indifferent.
Yet his voice remained gentle:
“Thank you for your kindness, but as for the help, I do not need it right now.”
The slots were limited, and someone had already taken one.
His fingertip carried a chill as it slid from Qi Ziyan’s brow all the way to the top of his head, like a stream of cold water constantly dripping onto the Omega, stimulating him so much he could not help but want to shiver, and his heart began to pound wildly.
“So, I will not trouble you, Qi Ziyan.”
The cold sensation on his forehead vanished. Li Qingran held up a small withered leaf and waved it before Qi Ziyan’s eyes:
“It just fell on your head.”
Qi Ziyan’s Adam’s apple bobbed.
Li Qingran let go of the hand. The withered leaf continued its descent. He was about to ask the Omega if he had any other questions, but the other suddenly backed away two steps. Those light brown eyes widened as they stared fixedly at Li Qingran for a few seconds. Then, the Omega turned quickly, got into the car, and stepped on the gas.
A strong gust of wind blew the withered leaves on the ground into a chaotic flutter. Li Qingran squinted his eyes at the receding sports car.
[What on earth did he come here for?]
“Probably to find pleasure in helping others,” Li Qingran said flatly as he withdrew his gaze. His eyes swept over the fallen leaves on the ground. After a thought, he took out his phone and snapped a photo.
Ding-dong.
In the silent underground parking lot, Su Jingyi instinctively gripped the phone in his pocket. However, he did not pull it out immediately. Instead, he looked at the group of Alphas blocking his car, wearing black masks and hats and clearly up to no good, and tried his best to remain calm:
“What do you want?! I am warning you, there are”
“Rest assured, we have absolutely no intention of harming the two of you.”
Before Su Jingyi could finish, the man leading the group in black stepped forward and spoke:
“We merely wish to invite Mr. Su Jingyi to meet a friend. A friend you have helped before.”
