- Chapter 42.1 - Heatwave
After establishing contact with Shang Shidai, Shang Shiqian’s mood improved even further.
However, this did nothing to soften her ruthless critiques as she coached the students in their chess games, thoroughly dismantling each one of them.
The students wailed in the group chat.
At first, other members of the club sympathized with them until they started flaunting their significantly improved skills in increasingly creative ways.
Group members: “…”
“Get lost.”
“Stop humble-bragging.”
These six had already beaten them in the selection matches, and now, under Shang Shiqian’s guidance, their skills were only getting sharper. Winning against them in the future would be even harder!
Watching the lively discussion in the group, Du He unexpectedly chimed in: “Are they really that good?”
The moment he appeared, the tone of the chat shifted to praise, admiration, and encouragement directed at him.
The Weijia League had now reached its ninth round.
In the first eight rounds, Du He had only secured three wins, losing five.
As a prodigy in the world of Go, his classmates and fans had high expectations for him, making these results undeniably disappointing.
Still, with only a third of the season gone, they believed Du He could turn things around, so they rallied behind him with encouragement.
When no one answered his question, Du He irritably exited the group chat and privately messaged Li Zhishen: “Do you have any coaching videos or game records of Shang Shiyu?”
Li Zhishen was used to his arrogant demeanor and replied, “You want them? Won’t watching this during the competition affect your playstyle?”
“Like I’d let that happen?”
Seeing this, Li Zhishen sent him the videos and some links: “These are the game records I uploaded.”
The videos were edited since a single match could take hours, recording the entire thing would be too time-consuming and storage-heavy.
He had only kept the instructional segments and later used software to generate the game records for clearer visualization.
Shang Shiqian wasn’t in the Go club’s group chat and had no idea about any of this.
During a break, a student invited her: “Coach Shang, we’re planning to go out for dinner tonight. Would you like to join us?”
Shang Shiqian had been coaching them for nearly ten days but had never interacted with them outside of training, let alone shared a meal.
She had no issue with normal socializing, so she said, “Let me call home and tell them I won’t be back for dinner.”
With that, she stepped aside to call Pu Feifei.
After listening, Pu Feifei asked, “…Will you be back late?”
“Probably around seven or eight.”
It was Sunday, and if she went to dinner with the students, her coaching session would likely end by six.
Dining out inevitably involved casual conversation, and a meal could easily stretch to one or two hours.
“Alright, I’ll let Wei Yixian know as well.”
Just as Shang Shiqian was about to hang up, Pu Feifei called out to her again: “Xiao Shang…”
“What is it, Sister Pu?”
Pu Feifei hesitated.
She wanted to tell Shang Shiqian that Wei Yixian was sick.
But the moment Wei Yixian had collapsed, she had considered informing Shang Shiqian only for Wei Yixian to stop her, insisting she keep it a secret.
After stammering for a moment, she swallowed her original words and instead said, “Never mind. Just be careful about hygiene when eating out.”
After hanging up, Shang Shiqian couldn’t shake the feeling that Pu Feifei had been acting strangely.
The last time she’d sensed something off during a call with Pu Feifei was when Xiao Luomeng had picked her up to go to Huayang Park.
Thinking of this, she directly dialed Wei Yixian’s phone number.
After waiting three or four seconds, the call connected.
But no one spoke on the other end, only the faint sound of breathing could be heard.
Shang Shiqian spoke first: “Wei Yixian?”
Wei Yixian responded: “Mhm.”
Though distorted by the phone, her tone still carried a lazy, casual air.
As if she’d just woken up.
A flicker of confusion crossed Shang Shiqian’s mind.
Did Wei Yixian usually take afternoon naps at this hour?
“Are you resting?” Shang Shiqian asked.
She received the same reply.
“Then I won’t disturb you.” Shang Shiqian paused, noticing Wei Yixian hadn’t hung up immediately, so she proceeded to report about the dinner gathering she’d attend that evening.
Wei Yixian said: “I already know. Anything else?”
Shang Shiqian: “…No.”
Only after Shang Shiqian ended the call first did Wei Yixian hand the phone to Pu Feifei, who stood by the bed.
“Medicine,” Wei Yixian said flatly.
Pu Feifei replied: “The doctor said there should be eight-hour intervals between doses. Fever reducers can only be taken when the temperature exceeds 38.5°C.”
“It’s just one or two hours short.”
Pu Feifei remained firm: “I know you want to recover quickly so Miss Shang won’t find out you’re sick when she returns. But for your health, please follow the doctor’s orders.”
Wei Yixian: …
She gave Pu Feifei a look that said “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” then lay back down: “Get out and close the door.”
Pu Feifei: …
Seems the boss’s demeanor has been influenced by little Shang!
East City University, East Gate. A milk tea shop.
Chu Fei sat inside, sipping milk tea while idly watching the East Gate.
She’d been there all day anyone unaware might think she was the owner keeping an eye on operations.
The shop staff didn’t shoo her away, even chatting with her during lulls: “Aren’t you a delivery rider? Not taking orders now?”
Chu Fei casually fibbed: “No orders, changed careers.”
The staff said: “You didn’t seem to actively take orders before either… So what are you doing now?”
“Babysitting for the boss.”
Staff: ?
Where’s your boss’s child?
Mid-chat, Chu Fei suddenly spotted Shang Shiqian exiting campus and heading toward the shop.
She instinctively moved to avoid her.
Then remembering she no longer needed to hide while protecting Shang Shiqian, she proactively greeted her upon entry: “Miss Shang.”
Shang Shiqian showed no surprise at seeing Chu Fei there.
She asked: “Sister Chu, you haven’t been here all day, have you?”
Chu Fei replied: “The air conditioning’s good here.”
Shang Shiqian smiled: “You could actually do other things to pass the time. I’d contact you when leaving campus.”
Chu Fei shook her head she’d endured far longer waits during past missions.
Here she had AC, drinks, and meals anytime much more comfortable than before.
So she didn’t find this time particularly hard to bear.
Changing the subject: “Finished your juice, Miss Shang?”
“No, it’s for someone else.”
After the call with Wei Yixian, Shang Shiqian ultimately decided to cancel the evening gathering.
There were many ways to strengthen friendships she chose treating them to milk tea instead.
After buying milk tea, Shang Shiqian said to Chu Fei, “I’m planning to take the bus back later. No need to inform Sister Pu and the others.”
Chu Fei was just a bodyguard; she didn’t care why Shang Shiqian was doing this.
“Alright.”
After Shang Shiqian entered the school, the milk tea shop employee asked, “Is that your boss’s child?”
Chu Fei thought to herself, whenever there’s the slightest movement around Miss Shang, President Wei gets extremely nervous, it’s even more protective than a mother bear guarding her cub.
She nodded.
The employee remarked, “The kid is already this old, and still needs watching? Your boss’s control issues are way too strong!”
Chu Fei: “…”
–
When Pu Feifei received a call from the property management to verify Shang Shiyu’s identity, she realized Shang Shiqian had returned.
She was about to inform Wei Yixian but hesitated for some reason, deciding instead to drive the patrol car herself to pick up Shang Shiqian and Chu Fei.
Pu Feifei asked, “Why didn’t you call me to pick you up?”
Shang Shiqian replied, “The gathering was canceled last minute. I didn’t want to trouble Sister Pu with an extra trip, so I took the bus back.”
“What would you like to eat, Miss Shang? I’ll have someone deliver the ingredients,” Pu Feifei said casually. “President Wei isn’t feeling well, so we didn’t prepare fresh groceries at home.”
Shang Shiqian gripped the armrest, startled. “Wei Yixian isn’t feeling well is she sick?”
Pu Feifei feigned hesitation. “You know President Wei’s rules, I can’t disclose anything about her.”
Chu Fei: “…”
This is practically shouting “No silver buried here.”
Shang Shiqian didn’t press further.
Upon returning, she went upstairs.
This was her first time stepping onto the third floor since moving in.
The third floor could be considered Wei Yixian’s private domain.
There was only one bedroom and a study, occupying two-thirds of the floor space, with the remaining third being a large terrace.
But she had no time to explore now.
Because the Black Moonlight System was giving her advice: [The female lead is sick, this is the perfect opportunity to win her favor and make her fall even deeper for you!]
Shang Shiqian asked: [What’s wrong with her? Is it serious? What should I do?]
She wasn’t asking for the sake of gaining favor she simply had no experience caring for the sick and had no choice but to consult the system.
But she had overestimated the Black Moonlight System’s integrity.
